DOMINICANS SERVING THE ARCHDIOCESE OF ANCHORAGE

For the Week of April 25th, 2004

ALASKA CATHOLIC YOUTH CONFERENCE
For adult members of the Church, parents and faith formation teachers, be curious and come Sunday, June 6, to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish for the ACYC Kick-Off Celebration. Join in welcoming all the leaders in youth ministry and musicians from around the United States. The reception, from 2:30 - 6:30 pm, includes the Mass at 5:30 pm.

Come To The Concert June 7: A concert on Monday, June 7, at 7:30 pm in UAA's Wendy Williamson Auditorium will be a highlight of the conference. All families, youth and adults are invited to a great evening of song, fun and praise. For more information call Theresa Lutes at 646-3035 or 276-3455.

Many Volunteers Needed for ACYC: Just to give you an idea, a minimum of 12-15 people are needed to prepare and serve each meal and there are 6 meals. Chaperones are needed on a daily basis to monitor safety and the Youth Recreation Room, to ride on buses which take us to the 25 sites for service and to the social gatherings. We thank those who have already volunteered their hospitality in housing several groups. We have one large group of 22 girls from Fairbanks who would like to stay together. Last year we had over 10 volunteers from the Cathedral, we'd like to double or triple that number this year. If you can help in any way, call Theresa Lutes at 647-3025 or 276-3455.

JOIN US IN PRAYER AND ADORATION OF OUR SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST!!!
Every Friday, from 10 am to 12 Noon, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is held at Holy Family Cathedral. Our 12:10 pm Mass follows the two hours of adoration. "Could you not spend even one hour with me?"

OUTREACH COLLECTION:
Thank you for your generous support to the “Outreach” collection last weekend. Through your support to the Catholic Communication Campaign we are able to preach the Gospel message through the media as well as to keep the direct costs to our parishes low for the Catholic Anchor.

SEMINARIAN SUPPORT COLLECTION NEXT SUNDAY:
Next weekend there will be a special collection to assist in the education and support of the Archdiocesan seminarians now in studies for ordination and service to our local Church. Please pray for these men and that God will continue to bless our Archdiocese with religious vocations. Please also be generous in your financial support of this appeal.

MOTHER’S DAY CARDS AVAILABLE:
Mother’s Day cards are available in the gathering area. This is a prayerful way to say thanks to your mother and those who have been like mothers to you. The Spiritual Bouquet offering envelopes may be returned in the collection or brought to the parish office by May 7. Spiritual Bouquet offering envelopes without cards are also available.

Are You Addicted to Sex?
You are not alone. Many Catholics are caught up in sexual addiction after visiting internet pornography websites. “Sex Addicts Anonymous” (SAA) based upon the 12-step model of recovery helps both men and women achieve long-term sexual sobriety. Individuals desiring sexual sobriety based upon the 12-step “AA” model may contact a local SAA group at 677-0880. This group’s internet address is: sa_anchorage@yahoo.com. Patrick Carnes, Ph.D. describes and defines sexual addiction and its treatment in his pioneer book entitled, Out of the Shadows: Understanding Sexual Addiction.

TURN IN YOUR OPERATION RICE BOWL CONTRIBUTIONS:
Thank you for taking part in the Lenten journey with Catholic Relief Services' Operation Rice Bowl. If you have not turned in your Operation Rice Bowl contribution envelopes, please place them in the collection or turn them into the office as soon as possible.

Invitation to Help With Mother’s Day Flowers:
Dads and Daughters and Dads and families are invited to help prepare the floral bouquets for the Mother’s Day Masses. If you will help with this project meet in the Holy Family Education Center at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 8th This special project is sponsored by the Holy Family Cathedral Respect Life Committee. For more information call Theresa Lutes at 646-3025 or 276-3455.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS:

SPRING SCRIPTURE STUDY BEGINS MAY 3rd:
Join us Monday, May 3rd, at 6:30 pm in the Education Center for Holy Family Cathedral's SPRING SCRIPTURE STUDY as we begin to study Women in the Old Testament. The women in the Old Testament, too long invisible, have rich stories that are vital to God's relationship with the covenant people. This study introduces readers to women whose stories offer courage and insight. To register for these sessions or for more information please call the office at 276-3455.

NEEDED—ONE EVENING of CHILDCARE!
May is National Foster Care Month. Foster parents are the unsung heroes who work 24-7 to provide a safe haven for children in crisis. It can be a difficult job with little or no support. Join us in showing our foster parents we appreciate the valuable work they do. On May 7th, come and be a part of this event honoring foster families by caring for their children. We need mature people 14 years and older from 5:30 - 9 pm. Please RSVP by May 1 to Alaska Foster Parents Training Center, 279-1799. Thank you so much!

BUY A BOARD:
Again this year, the Catholic community of Anchorage will be constructing a Habitat for Humanity House. All Holy Family Cathedral parishioners are invited to participate.
You don’t know anything about building? The easiest way to participate it to purchase a board to be used in the house. You may even write a message or prayer on the board. A representative from Habitat for Humanity Catholic House will be selling boards after all Masses May 15/16. A $20 contribution will get your message on a 2 x 4 and for $25 dollars you can sign a 2 x 6. What a great way to help a family in need to purchase an affordable home. Look for the table and boards west of the front entrance to the church.
Want to do more? There are lots of different things to do. And there will be training to help you participate in construction. Or, you could provide lunches and snacks for the construction volunteers. Training sessions for construction volunteers will be 9?11:30 am May 3rd (construction techniques, framing) and May 10th (construction techniques, interiors, siding, insulation and drywall). All the training meetings will be held at 1200 E. 76th Ave. Suite 1208 (Habitat’s warehouse). Everyone is invited to the Groundbreaking for the 2004 Habitat for Humanity Catholic House on Sunday, May 18, at 4 pm at the corner of Peterkin and N. Bragaw. Be a part of stewardship in action. For more information call Elaine Snowden at 243-2418 or Pat Kennish at 345-0306.

BINGO BUFFET TO BUILD:
The 3rd Annual Habitat for Humanity Catholic Project Bingo Buffet to Build will be Saturday, May 1, at 6:45 pm, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Join us for an evening of fun and games as we raise funds for the 2004 construction of the Habitat for Humanity Catholic Project. The Knights of Columbus will once again be providing dinner. There will be auction items, a raffle and bingo. Tickets are $25/each. Call 345-0306 for further information.

VOTER REGISTRARS NEEDED:
The Archdiocese of Anchorage is seeking volunteers to conduct voter registrations in local parishes during one weekend in May. If you are a registrar, or are willing to attend a short training to become a registrar, please contact Angela Liston at the Archdiocese of Anchorage, 297-7731.

First Communion Class Retreat Reminder:
The First Communion Class Retreat will be Saturday, May 1, from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm. We will be making and baking bread. Prayer and practice for Communion will be in the Cathedral. Remember, this retreat is for parents as well as those students who will be receiving First Communion.

ACYC:
The Alaska Catholic Youth Conference dates are approaching quickly. Over 250 teens from around the state and from the Illinois Diocese will attend this year's conference. A sample of the workshops is included in this week's bulletin. Watch for your registration packet to arrive in the mail. If needed, scholarships are available.

ATTENTION CATHOLIC YOUTH:
An invitation from the Junior Legion of Mary to all kids from 7 to 17 years old. Every Saturday morning we meet at Holy Family Cathedral's Education Center from 10 am to noon and visit the elderly at the Pioneer Home, clean the Cathedral, or do some apostolic work followed by a meeting. Come join the Junior Legion of Mary!

PARKING:
Please do NOT park in the Wings n' Things parking area on Saturdays or at anytime the business is open. When you use their customer parking area you interfere with their ability to operate the business. Your vehicle will be towed. Also, please do NOT park in the alley! It is unsafe and discourteous to people who need to use the alley. Be aware, tickets are being issued. Use the designated passenger drop-off area on 'H' Street to conveniently let off family members and then proceed to the ConocoPhilipps parking area for Saturday evening or Sunday Mass parking. Also NO long term parking in the designated drop-off area on 'H' Street. Everyone's cooperation is appreciated.

SOCIAL JUSTICE RESPECT LIFE
We need courage and honesty to speak the truth about human life. We need humility to listen to both friend and opponent. We need perseverance to continue the struggle for the protection of human life. We need prudence to know when and how to act in the public arena.

YOUTH TO YOUTH:
The Youth of the Cathedral (YOC) Advisory Group is planning a dance at the Cathedral on Friday, May 7, from 8:00 - 11:00 pm in the Parish Hall. Please mark your calendar. Youth from surrounding parishes in the Archdiocese are also invited. Volunteers from Holy Family will be needed for chaperones and security outside. Parishioners will be asked to support our youth with drinks and snack foods. More information to follow.

2003 Confirmation CDs are now available. Please stop by the education center to pick up your copy. There is no charge for the CD but donations will be accepted. For more information please call Theresa Lutes at 276-3455.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR NEEDED:
Mary Magdalene Home Alaska, Inc. needs a volunteer for coordinating our Holiday Tea/Auction. This organization has come together to help prostitutes get out and stay out of prostitution. They have been putting on this event for six years, so there are many talented folks to assist. God has used this organization and this function mightily. You can be a part of this good work by volunteering. If you are interested in any way, please contact us at 277-6642 or Teri 338-4624

VOTER REGISTRARS NEEDED:
The Archdiocese of Anchorage is seeking volunteers to conduct voter registrations in local parishes during one weekend in May. The U.S. Bishops have encouraged all Catholics to embrace their citizenship as a duty and a privilege, and they have reminded Catholics that "every vote counts." If you are a registrar, or are willing to attend a short training to become a registrar, please contact Angela Liston at the Archdiocese of Anchorage, 297-7731.

ST. FRANCIS HOUSE IN NEED OF FOOD:
St. Francis House, a program of Catholic Social Services, is in short supply of canned food. A high demand for food assistance from needy families in recent months has severely depleted the normal stock of reserves. St. Francis House is asking for donations of canned food items or money to buy more canned goods to stock their shelves. Please contact Rob Marx, 222-7324, for more information.

NOTES from THE MUSIC DIRECTOR:
Last week's music information on the hymn, "Jesus Christ Is Risen Today," contained reference to that hymn being a trope on the Benedicamus Domino. This weekend's processional hymn, "Ye Sons and Daughters," is another one originally written as a trope on that same concluding formula. (Even way back then, "they" were changing those good old songs. Seems like nothing ever really changes, does it?!)

Jean Tisserand, d1491, the Minorite friar who wrote "Ye Sons and Daughters," intended the hymn to be sung after Vespers on Easter Sunday - hence the multiple verses that tell several portions of the Easter story. Since our Gospel this weekend recounts the story of Thomas' doubt and Christ' s assurance, we will sing the verses of "Ye Sons and Daughters" that speak specifically of Thomas' encounter with the risen Lord.

LIBRARY FEATURE THIS WEEK
Secret Places...Sacred Paths by Madeline Duckett, RSM. "Secret Places" are the places and times where we are most aware of the presence of God in our lives. Perhaps they were when you have almost been taken out of yourself with wonder and joy at the sight of something beautiful in life or the environment. These experiences vary, but they can be times of God's special entry into our lives. The author shows us how to respond and recapture them in our prayers. She helps us to be aware of the presence of God in these experiences, how to respond in prayer and how to encounter God in new ways. What a wonderful way to start Spring in Alaska.
