PETER ANDREW BEARDSLEY
There's only one PETER
"Peter is simply the best,
better than all the rest"
Kevin Keegan
To many modern generation Newcastle
fans, Peter Beardsley is recognized as the best and most consistent player to have pulled
on the Magpie shirt.
Although Peter spent a many of his most productive years playing with Liverpool and
Everton, he never lost the old passion for his local club. Beardsley is a brilliant little
player who, operating just behind the front strikers, has proved devastating at both
creating and scoring goals, netting over 100 goals for Newcastle and almost 250 in his
entire career.
With lovely skills and the vision of a master playmaker, Beardsley has the enthusiasm to
work and run for 90 minutes and, above all, the knack of striking absolute gems that find
the net - time and time again.
Peter was in fact on United's books three times: as a teenager, he was released by Bill
McGarry and picked up by Carlisle where he made a name for himself in the rough and tumble
of Division Three football.
After creating a big impression in North America (While he was playing for Vancouver
Whitecaps) and spendding five months with Manchester United, Peter headed back to St.
James' Park to become Kevin Keegan's partner as the Magpies won promotion with splendour
during 1984.
He quickly matured and became a regular in the Englandd set-up before transferring to
Liverpool in search of trophies during July 1987. The fee was a record £1.9 millions.
That money helped to build the Jackie Milburn stand, and that's a rightful tribute to
another legendary United player, but there are still Newcastle fans who call it the Peter
Beardsley stand.
Championship and cup medals came his way at Anfield before he moved to
Stanley Park to join Everton in 1991, becoming a firm favourite with the crowd. In a
surprise move, Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan brought Peter back to Tyneside at 32 years-old
in July 1993, for £1.5 millions.
"Take it from me, if ever a man put his club first and himself second when he signed
for me it was Peter Beardsley. Everybody in football has the utmost respect for him and
I'm right at the top of those who respect him most."
It was money well spent, as his experience and guile made a huge impact on Newcastle's
rise as a Premiership force. Beardsley enjoyed a new lease of life and just missed out on
skippering the Magpies to the title, before he moved to Bolton in August 1997.
