Types of military planes:


Fighter:  An aircraft used primarily for air-to-air combat.

Bomber:  An aircraft with a sole purpose to bomb large structures over many distances.

Attack:  An aircraft similar to a bomber, though attack planes are used more for striking small targets at closer ranges and for close ground support.

Multi-Role: Usually an aircraft that has both fighting and attacking capabilities.

Trainer:  An aircraft used for training new pilots; trainers are usually very maneuverable and moderately fast.

Reconnaisance (Recon):  An aircraft used for spying and photographing.

Survailance:  An aircraft used to watch the skies for enemy planes or ships and vehicles.

Tanker:  An aircraft used to give fuel to planes that require mid-air refueling.

Cargo:  An aircraft used to transport people or equipment across seas or a large land mass.

Utility: Aircraft used for various tasks that usually cannot fall under the other designations or include several roles.

Experimental: An aircraft with the sole purpose of testing new designs and concepts.

Electronic Warfare: An aircraft used to jam, disrupt, or track enemy radar systems.

Observation: An aircraft similar to reconnaisance although used just as a scout in closer ranges.
