The Articles of Faith, Rules of Decorum, and minutes of monthly meetings from1821 to 1883 of the Baptist Church of Washington, North Carolina, have been transcribed by Anne Singleton Condran from microfilm. Copies are available on microfilm at libraries throughout the United States (Publication # 712 Roll 19 North Carolina Baptist Churches). Readers are fore warned that the records are very difficult to read and transcribe. This is due to the quality of the microfilm, penmanship of the church clerks, style of writing in the 1800s and lastly, the grammar and lack of punctuation used.
The ten clerks between 1821 and 1879 were members of the Church who probably were chosen because of their ability to read and write. They probably received very little formal education and tended to write phonetically. Thus, researchers will find wording and surnames spelled differently through the record. The interpretation of the correct spelling seems to be at the discretion of the clerk of the church. For example, the surname Lenear appears as Lenneyear and Singleton as Shingleton.
Those of us interested in the history of Beaufort County, North Carolina, are indeed fortunate that the "Old Church Book" has survived. Careful study will show that the church was formed in 1821 by Brother Jeramiah Masten who was the first pastor. At his death Brother Will Smaw was elected pastor followed by Elder Jones, W. B. Perry and N. H. Harison. The ten clerks included: Miles Evrett, J .B. Smithbell, W. G. Cooper, George Eliott, Thomas McKeel, James W. Satchwell, Jacob Swindel, William David Singleton, J. V. Little and Heardy D. Allegood. Through the wisdom of these church leaders we have a well documented history of the Washington Baptist Church/Beaverdam Church (The constitution for the church was developed for the Washington Church, North Carolina. The name was changed at the February 1873 meeting to the Beaverdam Church).
Principals (or articles of faith) of the Washington No Ca Church
We believe in the being of God and he as Almighty,
eternal, unchangeable, of infinite wisdom, power,
justice, holinefs, goodnefs, love and Truth & that this
God has revealed himself in his Word under the charactors
of Father, Son, and Holy ghost
We believe that almighty God has made known his
(smudge) & will to the children of man in his word
which word we believe to be of devine authority and
contains all things necefary to be Known for the
Salvation of men & women, the same is comprehended
or contained in the book s of the new & old Testament
as are commonly received
We believe that God before the foundation of the
world for a purpose of his own Glory, did etch certain
number of Men & angels to eternal life, and that this
election is peticular, eternal & unconditional on the creatures
part
We believe that when God made man at first, he
Was perfect, Holy & upright able to keep the law but liable
to fall, and that he stood as a fodral head or representive
of all his natural offspring, and that they were to be
partakers of the benefit of his obedence, or opposed to the
mistery which sprang from his disobedience
We believe that Adam fell from his moral state of
rectitude & that he involved himself and all his natural
offspring in a state of death, and for that original trangression
we are all both filthy & guilty in the sight of an
holy God
We also believe that its utterly out of the power of Men
as fallen creatures to Keep this law of God, perfectly
repent of these sins truly, or believe in Christ, except
they be drawn by this holy Spirit
7th We believe, that God's own appointed time & ways
by means which he has ordained The Elect shall be
called, justified, pardoned & sanctifyed & that its impofsible
they can utterly refuse the call, but Shall be made willing
in the day of his power to receive the offer of mercy
8 We believe that Justification in the sight of God
is only by the imputed rightiousnef of Jesus Christ
received & applied by faith alone
9 We believe in like manner, that God's Elect
not only be called & Justify'd but that they shall be
converted, born again, & changed by the efectual working of
God's holy spirit
10. We believe that such as are converted, Justified & called
by his graces shall persevere in holinef & never fall
finally away
11 We believe it to be a duty incumbant on all
God's people, to walk rightiously in good works
not in the old covenant way of seeking life & the
favour of the Lord by it - but only as a duty from
a principal of love
12 We believe that baptism & the Lords supper are
gospel ordinances both belonging to the converted or true
believers and that persons who were sprinkled or dipped
whilst in unbelief were not regularly baptised according
to God's word & that such ought to be baptised after
they are savingly converted into the faith of Christ
13 We believe in the resurrection of the dead both of
the Just & unjust & a general' Judgment, and that
the punishment of the wicked is ever lasting & the
Joy of the Righteous are Eternal. These princepals
