TSUI HARK

Tsui Hark (Xu2 Wen2 Guang1) was born in Vietnam in February 1951.  In school he used to perform a magic show on  stage  with his friends at the end of every school year. At age of thirteen he rented an 8 mm camera from a local camera store and he filmed their magic show. 

In 1966 he was sent to Hong Kong for his secondary education.  3 years later he moved to the States to study filmmaking first in Dallas and year after that in  the University of Austin.

In 1975 he moved to New York where he became an editor for a local chinese newspaper. 

Tsui returned to Hong Kong in 1977. He began to work as a producer for TVB television network. In 1979 he made his directorial debut with "Butterfly murders".

In 1983 Tsui directed Zu -warriors from the magic mountain. He used there hollywood-style special effects, which was new to Hong Kong film industry.

Year after that he established his Filmcompany Film Workshop. He has procuced and directed tens of films. The most famous is Once upon a Time in China - series with Jet Li. He has also worked with famous John Woo in Better Tomorrow and in Killer.

He began his career in Hollywood in 1997 when he directed Double Team with Jean Claude van Damme and Mickey Rourke.  A year later he worked again with Damme in Knock off.

In 1997 he also produced animated version of the Chinese Ghost Story.

Lately Tsui has worked with famous Hong Kong comic artist Ma Wing Shen, who is the man behind the Stormriders. They are said to launch a new comic series based on the novel the Magic Blade

He will next produce Black Mask 2 and direct the sequel to Zu -warriors of the magic mountain.

Tsui has been called as " Steven Spielberg" of Hong Kong.

In Texas his fellow students called him King Kong.

He made a cameo in Better Tomorrow.
