Generation No. 1

1.  WILLIAM6 ARLEDGE  (JOHN5, WILLIAM4 ALDRIDGE, CLEMENT3, CLEMENT2, JOHN ALDRICH/1) was born Bet. 1740 - 1745 in lived on Dutchman's Creek, Camden Dist/Fairfield Co, SC; 1792 tax list in Fairfield: 1810 Kershaw 00001/10001/2 slaves, and died Aft. 29 Apr 1819 (WILL filed in Fairfield but not proved); lived in Kershaw Co, SC aft c1800.  He married MARY ??? Bet. 1768 - 1775.  She was born Abt. 1740. She is listed in Kershaw Co SC as HOH in 1820 census, and died Aft. 1840 (was HOH in 1840 Kershaw census, age 70-80).

Notes for WILLIAM ARLEDGE:

WILLIAM ARLEDGE b. prob. 1740's, d. 1819

His parentage is not proven--could be son of Isaac, William or John...or Clement... of Nortunmberland Co, VA. However, he seems to have been closely associated with Elizabeth Thomas Arledge Fellows, widow of John Arledge --so I believe John was his father and Elizabeth was his mother.

In November 1998, Mike Marshall <michaelm@inna.net> sent me the following, from the records of old Frederick County, VA: 1745---

ARLEDGE, John--Given power of attorney by Hannah Thomas for the collection of sums of money owed her by William Thomas Esq. and Henry Tapscot. Recorded 4 Mar 1745. The people mentioned in this power of attorney appear to have come from Northumberland County, Virginia. Insight into this power of attorney may be gained by taking note of the will of one Richard Thomas of Great Wicocomoco Parish, Northumberland County, dated 7 Sep 1741 and proved 9 Nov 1741. This will makes specific bequests to sons William and Richard as well as to daughters Ann Sampson and Elizabeth ALDRIDGE. It divides the remainder of Richard Thomas' estate among his four children--Richard, HANNAH Thomas, Robert and Mary. The executors of Richard Thomas' will were his brother, William Thomas, and Henry Tapscott. Witnesses were Dennis Conway and Moses Thomas.

These documents suggest that John ARLEDGE and Hannah Thomas may have been living in Frederick County, Virginia in 1745. And, John ARLEDGE/ALDRIDGE was quite likely the husband of Elizabeth Aldridge nee Thomas, and the brother-in-law of Hannah Thomas. The power of attorney given to John Arledge in Frederick County, Virginia in 1745 was probably to enable him to collect Hannah's portion of the residuary estate of her deceased father, Richard Thomas.

It appears from this document that William and Alice Fallin Arledge's son John Arledge and his wife Elizabeth Thomas Arledge (note: this is the Elizabeth who later remarried Matthias Fellows in SC) may have been in *Frederick Co, VA* before going to SC.  I believe that he went to Fairfield Co, SC, fathered a number of Arledge children (Moses, Isaac-who-married-Sally, probably John-of-Edgefield, William-of-Kershaw, etc.), died fairly young, and Elizabeth remarried Matthias Fellows.

_______________

William and his wife Mary had at least two daughters, Lydia (named after William's sister) and Ann. Graham Louer has suggested that they may have had another daughter who married Stephen Dukes (See Mary * Arledge). They had at least four sons--Samuel, William, Moses and Elijah. There is an Absolom Arledge listed living in the same vicinity in 1820 who is of the age to be another son, though he is rarely mentioned elsewhere, so his identity is in question. There is a Thom Arledge mentioned as owning land adjacent to Samuel in an 1806 deed, though this is the only mention ever found of him in SC. Could he have been another son of William's? Could Isom/Isham Arledge b. 1770-1780 also be a son of this family (I currently think he was a son of Caleb Aldridge/Arledge)? In fact, could he be the same as the "Thom" (need to look at original to see if "Isom" might have been mistranscribed as "Thom").

A William Aldridge is involved in many, many land transactions in SC as early as 1756 through 1775, several of them involving Mathias Fellows/Fellewes, Paul Johnson, Joseph Duke, John Single, among others. Names are spelled Aldridge, Alderage, Alderidge. I believe the earlier transactions are of William Aldridge, son of William and Alice and brother of John (above). THIS later William is probably his nephew. I have not found evidence that the earlier William (who died in 1784) had any children who survived him.

Elizabeth Arledge received a royal grant of 100 acres on Dutchman's Creek in Craven County beside William Arledge on 12 Dec 1766; on 6 Oct 1767 this was certified for Mathias Fellewis [Fellows]. I believe this was the older William as well.

Colonial America, 1607-1789 SC Census Index: lists a William ALDRIDGE in 1778 in Camden Dist..

Name:    WILLIAM ALDRIDGE   State:    SC    County:    Camden District    Township:    No Township Listed    Year:    1778    Database:    SC Early Census Index

In 1778, a William Aldridge and Mathias Fellows served on a jury together. This could have been either this William or the older one.

The other (older) William Aldridge/Arledge died in 1784. He was probably the uncle of this William, a brother of John.

[Is this the WILLIAM ALDRIDGE listed as a Head of Household in the 1790 census in 96 District, Spartanburg Co, SC, with 2 males over 16, 3 males under 16 and 2 females. Aldrige, William State : SC County : Spartanburg Dist. (96 Dist.) Year : 1790 Page # : Age ranges in household : 02-03-02-00-00 . No--Thurman Aldridge claims that this is the William Aldridge from his family (not related to our Arledges). Also in Spartanburg Co (96 District) is listed a NICHOLAS ALDRIDGE (and in the Abbeville Co section of the 96 District we find two NATHANIEL ALDRIGE's). These are apparently from a different ALDRIDGE (not ARLEDGE) family, related to the Maryland Aldridges.]

Where was *this* William at the time of the 1790 census? He should have had a noticeable family by this time. Why is he not listed anywhere?

Could he have been the William ALDRIDGE in Mecklenburg CO, NC that year?

In 1792, a William Arledge listed in the Fairfield Co, SC tax list with one slave and 247 acres of 3rd class land  [Chester Bulletin 9-1990 p. 82]. Is this the same William, or his son? Probably so. The only other William Arledge (b.c. 1775), son of Isaac, who later married Sarah Ford, would probably not have been old enough to be enumerated at this time.

In 6 June 1794, Elizabeth [Arledge] Felloes [Fellows], widow, sold to William Arledge, Sr the 100 acres granted to Mathias Fellows 22 Nov 1771 on Taylor's Creek and an additional 147 acre tract granted to Matthias Fellows 4 Apr 1794 for 50 pounds sterling (total 247 acres). Wit; John Yarborough, Asa Bell, Ann Bell [Fairfield Co. Deed Book K, 38-40]. Who was this William? The elder William in Fairfield had died in 1784. His brother Isaac's son William (b.c. 1775) was still a young man, being a minor in his father's 1790 will. I think since the Bells witnessed it, this was clearly her (Elizabeth's) son William, and Ann Arledge Bell was his daughter. So, at this time, this William was known as William Arledge SR., and his son as William Arledge JR, of Fairfield.

17 March 1799 Deed from William Arledge Sr. of Fairfield to William Arledge Junr. of Fairfield for 50 acres part of tract granted to Matthias Fellows 22 Nov 1771. Wit: Asa Bell, Moses Arledge, Elijah Arledge. These witnesses would be two of the sons and son-in-law of William (Sr.).

22 May 1800 Deed from William Arlidge Sr. of Fairfield Co to Charles Pickett, 100 acres on Dutchman's Creek originally granted to William Arledge Sr. [the same one, or the older one??] 8 May 1772. Wit: William Arledge Junr, Darling Jones. [Note: the Darling Jones family appears in NC in connection with the Clement Arledge family earlier in the century. This relationship needs further exploration].

It seems that William moved across the county line into Kershaw County, SC around 1800—or the county line changed and his property became part of Kershaw rather than Fairfield. Where was this William in 1800 census?

In the 1800 Fairfield County, SC, census, a William ARLEDGE is a head of household with one male 16-26 and 4 females under 16. But this is a very young family and this William would be too old by this time. The William listed in this census would be born 1774-1784. This is probably his son William. Isaac's son William did not have children by 1800.

1800 Kershaw census: A WILLIAM ALDRAGE and ELIJAH ALDRAGE are listed as heads of household in the 1800 Kershaw Co, SC census (William: 00010-00001-00 and Elijah: 00100-00100-00). William b. 1755-1774; Elijah b. 1775-1784. Could Elijah be William's son? Younger brother? These seem to be William JR and Elijah. However, it appears that William Jr. was enumerated in Fairfield County (above), unless there is an additional William Arledge who is unaccounted for. Where were William Sr. and Mary in the 1800 census? Could this be William Sr. in the 1800 Kershaw census, whose age is transcribed in the wrong column? This would make the most sense, since Mary's age range would be correct, and there are no children in the home. They are also adjacent to Asa Bell (10010-30010-00), b. 1775-84, who apparently married Ann Arledge, b. 1775-84.

1 March 1802 [recorded 28 May 1802], Newberry District, SC deed to William ARLEDGE Sen. of Kershaw District from John and Elizabeth Dobbins of Newberry District for 200 acres of land on Granny Quarter Creek (on waters of the Wateree) in Kershaw District for $235, bonded by Daniel Mathis, Edward Moss Kelly, Stephen Medlock, and vacant land orig. granted to John Dobbins. Witnessed by Elijah Arledge and Thomas Johnson, dated 1 March 1802. [Elizabeth Dobbins was John's mother; Mary his wife released dower. Granny's Quarter Creek flows into the Catawba/Wateree River about 6 miles above Camden Town, acc. to Mills 1825 Atlas of Kershaw District.]

26 October in 27th year of Independence (probably 1803; deed proved 28 Jan 1804): William Arledge Sr. of Kershaw District to Isaac Arledge of Kershaw 100 acres on Granny's Quarter Creek (half the land shown in Dobbins deed). Witnessed by John Lang, Absolom (A his mark) Arledge. William's mark was a W.

Fairfield County SC deeds: In 1804 (26 Jan) a William Arledge, planter, and wife Mary of Kershaw sold 50 acres to Stephen DUKES, blacksmith, part of a tract granted to Matthias Fellows on Taylor's Creek, joining land of Moses ARLEDGE and Jacob LOVE. Wit: Thomas Starke, Jr., Willliam ARLEDGE Jr., and Elijah IVEY. William's mark: W [Recorded 22 Mar 1804].That same year (6 Jan or Feb 1804), the same William and Mary ARLEDGE of Kershaw sold 97 acres on waters of Dutchman's Creek (Fairfield Co) to Stephen DUKES,  blacksmith, bounded on SE by Matthias Fellows and Jacob LOVE, on SW & NW by Ephraim POOL [prob. Ephraim Pettypool] and on NE by George PEAY. Wit: Thomas STARKE, Jr. William ARLEDGE, Elijah IVEY. William's mark: W; Mary released dower 22 Mar 1804.

10 Jan 1805, William Arledge Jr. and wife Mary of Fairfield to Austin Peay for 50 acres on Taylor's Creek, orig. granted to Matthis Fellows 22 Nov 1771. Wit: Anderson Rochell, Joseph Muse and Isaac Graham

Kershaw Dist, SC: 5 Aug 1806: Isaac and Lida ARLAGE of Fairfield to William ARLAGE Jr. for 100 acres on Granny's Quarter Creek, part of land granted to John Dobbins. Signed ISAAC ARLEDGE, LYDDA ARLEDGE (both using a seal). Wit: Austin PEAY, Thos. STONE Jr. , Wm. Turner

8 Aug 1806: William Arledge and wife Mary of Fairfield to John Henson, "all our proportion of all the plantations and tracts of land which belonged to the late Obediah Henson". Wit: Isaac Arledge, Benjamin Burke, Samuel ___?

14 Nov 1807: William ARLEDGE Sr. of Kershaw to Asa BELL, formerly of Kershaw but now of Tennessee, 50 acres "on which I now reside" on Granny's Quarter Creek, on east side of said creek, adj. James Dunlap. Macajah Thomas, being part of 200 acres from John Dobbins: "Be it understood that I William Arledge Sr and my wife Mary Arledge are to live on said 50 acres during our lives or pleasure..." William's mark: W. Wit: John H. McQuater, Wm. Powell

State grant 4 Sept 1809 of 974 acres in Fairfield (v 53, p. 595). Would this be to a younger William? Perhaps to Isaac's son William?

1810 Kershaw Co, SC census lists:

156 ALDRIGE, Samuel 20010-00101-05 [son of William and Mary]

156 ALDRIGE, William 00001-10001-02 [William Sr, Mary and one young daughter or granddaughter]

156 ALDRIGE, William, Jr. 00010-21100-02 [son of William and Mary]

Son Elijah was not listed in 1810 SC/Kershaw Co. or any SC county--where was he? Perhaps he had already moved to Richland County and missed the enumerators, since from probate records, he apparently died there in late 1817. Also, where are daughter Lydia and her husband Isaac Arledge? Son Moses was listed in Fairfield Co, SC 1810 census: 183 ARLEDGE, Moses (21010-30010-00). The other possible son [who is questionable as a son since he does not have a common family name and only appears once in a census, in 1820] is Absolom, who does not appear in any 1810 SC census.

A William Arledge is listed in the 1810 Fairfield County census: 191 ARLEDGE, William 20020-01010-06). I believe this is William (b. 1775), the son of Isaac and Anna Arledge of Fairfield, who married Sarah Ford.

Graham Louer writes that a William died in Kershaw in 1813, leaving a widow Mary. IS there a Kershaw will?? He believes that this would be William JR, son of William Sr., who died before his father did.

A Deed of Gift in Fairfield Co SC dated 7 Oct 1814 reads like a will, and leaves estate to daughter Lydia and her husband Isaac Arledge. If William had sons, why are they not named?

Fairfield Deed Book X p. 298

STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, FAIRFIELD DISTRICT Be it made known unto all whom this presence may appear greeting wherewas I William Arledge Seniour of the State and District aforesaid being not in a good condition of health but of a sound and perfect memory Thanks be to God for the same for unto in consideration of my pure love and affection which I have towards my beloved daughter Lidia and her husband Isaac Arledge both of the State and District aforesaid I do hereby make and constitute this my deed of gift in the manner and form as follows. I do hereby give and bequeath unto my daughter Lydia aforesaid and Isaac Arledge her husband aforesaid a certain Mulatta girl named Jenny aged about seventeen years to have and to hold together with all her There in case she Brings any to them Selves and children forever that is to say after my self and beloved wife's Desolution and are no more in this transitory world at which time this my deed of gift aforesaid is to be in full ? and virtue and not before. Intestam only sobere of I have hereunto set my hand and seal this Seventh day of October 1814.

William Arledge (seal) [Witness] James Briant

According to Graham Louer, there is some record of a deed dated 29 April 1819 from a William Arledge deeding certain items to daughter Lydia and her husband Isaac Arledge. This means he was still living in 1819. Louer wrote in personal correspondence: "On 29 April 1819 William Arledge of Fairfield District, 'for love and affection which I bare [sic] for my daughter Lydia and Isaac her husband of the said District...' gave them a slave, some livestock, all of his furniture, and 'other of my personal property consisting of household and kitchen furniture to have and to hold...after the decease of my beloved wife....' All debts and funeral expenses were to be paid from said propoerty. No land was conveyed (Fairfield CO, SC, Deed Book AA, pp. 407-8)."

In 1820 in Kershaw County census, we find ABSALOM ARLEDGE (111101 00101), ISAAC ARLEDGE (10100 00100) and MARY ARLEDGE (010000 00101: one male 10-15, one female 16-25 and one over 45). Is this Mary the widow of William Sr. with two of her children living with her? If so, it appears that this William (Sr.) died between April 1819 and the census taking of 1820. No will has been found.

Notes for ANN ARLEDGE:

In 6 June 1794,  Elizabeth [Arledge] Felloes [Fellows], widow,  sold to William Arledge, Sr the 100 acres granted to Mathias Fellows 22 Nov 1771 on Taylor's Creek and an additional 147 acre tract granted to Matthias Fellows  4 Apr 1794 for 50 pounds sterling (total 247 acres). Wit; John Yarborough, Asa Bell, Ann Bell [Fairfield Co. Deed Book K, 38-40]

From Graham Louer, Jul 1998:

born probably 1770-1774; probably daughter of william arledge sr

ln a kershaw deed dated 14 nov 1807, william arledge sr of kershaw co deeded 50 acres on granny's quarter creek to asa bell  "late of the aforesaid state and district"  [i.e., kershaw sc]  but now of

tennefsee", with the proviso that  "william arledge sr. and my wife mary arledge are to live o said 50a during our lives or pleasure"

this is an almost sure indication that asa bell is a son-in-law of william sr.

ln a fairfield deed dated 6 june 1794, elizabeth felloes sold certain land to william arledge sr.      the deed was witnessed by asa bell and ann bell.

thus, it is PRESUMED that asa's wife was ann, and, further, that asa and ann were married by june 1794.

ln an effort to determine the year of birth of asa's wife  [PROBABLY named ann, and almost certainly a daughter of william arledge sr of those 2 deeds], the censuses were checked.

1790 ... there were several bells in fairfield [there was no asa bell in sc], as below:

+lancaster co

bell, frances [sic] ... 5-3-3-0-0

+fairfield co

bell, george ... 1-1-5-0-0

bell, william ... 1-0-2-0-0

bell, john ... 1-0-1-0-0

bell, john jr ... 1-0-3-0-6

presuming that asa was in sc in 1790 [from later censuses, it appears that asa was born between 1770-1774, as was his wife],  he may or may not [at age 15-20 in 1790] be married in 1790, though it seems unlikely.

he and his wife appear to have 4 young children in their household in 1800, so he must have married not long after the 1790 census, if indeed he was not already married in 1790, but living in the household of another in 1790, married or not.

lf he, and possibly his bride, was living in any of the bell households shown above, it could only be at frances or george.     lf at george, asa was not yet 16;   if at frances [who was probably a male, as there were 3 males of 16 or above,  then asa's age might be either under 16 or 16+, both of which could agree with probable birth in 1770-1774; thus, asa's age in 1790 might be either under 16 or 16+, and he may or may not have been married.

1800

kershaw

bell, asey .... 10010   30010

this is presumed to be the asa of which the deed stated  "late of this [kershaw] district"  in 1807.      asey bell is here listed next to francis bell, probably? the frances of 1790, with elijah arledge on the other side of asey, and with william arledge [00010   00001] next to elijah arledge [00100   00100].       note that asa here appears to have 4 children, so it seems certain that he married no later than 1791, barring twins, etc.      since he is next to francis bell in 1800 kershaw, there seems little doubt as to where asa was in 1790.

since william arledge in his 1807 deed stated that asa was in tn in 1807,  they must have moved there some time between the 1800 census and the date of the 1807 deed.     they appear to have returned to sc by 1810, however, probably enticed by william's gift of the land, which was no doubt william's intention, in order to bring his daughter back to sc.

a search was made for asa in tn census indices through 1840 [there is no extant 1810 tn census], but he was not found.

ln fairfield sc, however, an asa bell and family are found for several decades beginning from 1810, as below.

1810 fairfield

bell, asa .... 21010   12910

1820 fairfield

bell, asa .... 320101   00001

1830 fairfield

bell, asa .... 00012001

1840 fairfield

010131001   000101

1840 richland co sc

bell, asa .... 121011   101001

although the 1800 asey bell is almost certainly the asa of the 1807 deed, it is not at all certain, given the fact that the 1800 asey did indeed go to tn, that the 1794, 1800 and 1807 asa is one and the same as the 1810 and subsequent ones, who show perfect age continuity, so that it is virtually certain that the 1810-1840 asas at any rate are all the same person, and, in my opinion, are the same as the 1800 asa, and thus also the 1794 and 1807 asa.

lt is my opinion that they returned from tn sometime between 1807 and 1810, but this time settled in fairfield ..... possibly because father-in-law william arledge sr was in fairfield and/or provided asa

with land there.

the 1800 census indicates that both asa and wife were born between 1755 and 1774.      using only that one census is only minimally helpful, so, remembering that the 1810-1840 censuses might not be for the same asa, of 1800  [it might be fruitful to check the proximity of asa to any arledges during those 1810-1840 censuses, particularly 1810 and 1820], the following is a track of the ages, and projected year of birth, of asa and wife found in 1800-1840.      since they are in the same age column in all censuses, only asa will be shown below, but the information is the same for his wife:

1800 .... 26-44, thus 1755-1774

1810 .... 26-44, thus 1765-1784, but, combined with 1800 data, actually

1765-1774

1820 .... 45+, thus 1775 or earlier, but, combined with 1800 and 1810

data, actually 1765-1774

1830 .... 50-59, thus born 1770-1780, but, combined with 1800-1820,

actually born 1770-1774

1840 .... 60-69, same result as 1830

1850 .... not checked

thus, l think, william arledge sr had one daughter who was born in 1770-1774, and her name was likely ann;   the birth years of william's other children are discussed elsewhere.    [july 1998]

note that no attempt was made to find asa bell deeds;  they might show his wife's actual name.

Hitz, Alex M. Authentic List of All Land Lottery Grants Made to Veterans of the Revolutionary War by the State of Georgia. State Printing Office. Atlanta. 1966.

Auldridge, Absolem; resident of Houston; 1832 lottery; Fortunate draw 223 (Land lot) 12 (District)  2  (Section); granted in Cherokee, 7/ 1/1843.

Aldrege, William   Wilkes  1832    247  5   4  Cherokee   12/ 1/183??

Belated recognition of the services of all Revolutionary veterans was made by the Act of June 9 1825, establishing the Fifth Land Lottery of 1827. Every veteran with three years residence in Georgia was allowed three draws if unmarried or four draws if married, regardless of where he had enlisted or in what regiment he had fought. The two additional draws, less any fortunate draw in the Third Land Lottery, were available to every veteran who could take the following prescribed oath before the registering officials, namely:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I served as a soldier in the armies of the United States during the Revolutionary War a tour or tours of duty, and am entitled to a draw or draws according to the provisions of this Act; so help me God".

Exactly the same preference was given to all Revolutionary veterans by the Act of December 21

1830, setting up the Sixth (Cherokee) Land Lottery of 1832. Service in the United States armies was the criterion - the State of enlistment and place of service was not material. However, a veteran was denied any additional draws if he had drawn two Land Lots (as a veteran) in the Land Lotteries of 1820 and 1827, and he was allowed only one additional draw if he had previously drawn one Land Lot. At the time of entering his name he was required to take the following oath, namely:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I served as a soldier in the armies of the United States during the Revolutionary War a tour or tours of duty, and that I did not any time during the said war bear arms or act as a spy or emissary against the United States, or in any manner aid or abet the enemy thereof, and am entitled to a draw or draws according to the provisions of this Act, so help me God".

Inasmush as every person claiming Revolutionary service was required to swear to his claim before fit and proper persons appointed for that purpose by the Inferior Court of the county of his residence, and inasmuch as those neighbors would know the truth or falsity of every claim, there can be but little doubt that every man styled or identified as "Rev. Sol." or "Rev. S." or R. Sol." or "R. S." on the Land Lottery lists and records was actually a veteran and former soldier of the United States army in the War of the American Revolution.

The following list includes all of those veterans (2069 in number) who were "fortunate drawers" in the Third (1820), Fifth (1827) and Sixth (1832) Land Lotteries. The spelling of first and last names has been carefully checked against three original official sources. Whenever a name did not appear exactly the same in all three places, those spellings which were in agreement have been accepted as the veteran's correct name. The name of a county following a veteran's name shows his residence as of the date of the indicated Land Lottery.

Under the words "Fortunate Draw" the first column indicates the Land Lot number and the second column indicates the District number and the occasional number found in the third column indicates the Section.
