The Greek Myth

The Greek Gods, Hermes (Messenger of the Gods) & Aphrodite (Goddess of Love) had a beautiful son named Hermaphroditus. During his travels he came to a lake & met the Naiad (water-nymph) Salmakis, who fell deeply in love with him at first sight, though he was not interested & rejected her advances. While Hermaphroditus was bathing in the lake, Salmakis appeared from the water grabbing him & begged the gods not to separate them. Her request was granted,  the two bodies were combined together as one, transforming Hermaphroditus into a beautiful woman with a penis.

The ancient greeks & romans believed the deity Hermaphroditus symbolized the physical ideals of both male & female, the earliest known evidence of Hermaphroditus was found on the island Cyprus, but soon after was adopted by the greeks & the romans and worshipped as a divinity of Love & Sexuality.
