Cat's in the Cradle

My child arrived just the other day,
He came to the world in the usual way.
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay.
He learned to walk while I was away.
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew,
He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, dad.
You know I'm gonna be like you."

**And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then."**

My son turned ten just the other day.
He said, "Thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play.
Can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today,
I got a lot to do." He said, "That's ok."
And he walked away, but his smile never dimmed,
Said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah.
You know I'm gonna be like him."

Well, he came from college just the other day,
So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son, I'm proud of you. Can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head, and he said with a smile,
"What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys.
See you later. Can I have them please?"

"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad.
You know we'll have a good time then."*****

I've long since retired and my son's moved away.
I called him up just the other day.
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind."
He said, "I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time.
You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kid's got the flu,
But it's sure nice talking to you, dad.
It's been sure nice talking to you."
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me,
He'd grown up just like me.
My boy was just like me.

คงยังจำกันได้ถึง Spotโฆษณารณรงค์งดสูบบุหรี่ของกระทรวงสาธารณสุขที่มีพ่อลูกเคล้าคลอกันอย่างมีความสุข
แต่แล้ววันหนึ่งพ่อก็จากไปด้วยโรคภัยจากการสูบบุหรี่   ซึ่งในโฆษณาดังกล่าวได้ใช้เพลงนี้เป็น Background ด้วย  

เนื้อเพลงเกี่ยวกับความรู้สึกเศร้าเสียใจของพ่อที่นึกย้อนเวลาไปในอดีตนับตั้งแต่ลูกเกิด หัดเดิน หัดพูด เข้าโรงเรียน
หรือเล่นลูกบอล ตามวรรคที่ 1 และ 3   โดยที่พ่อไม่ได้มีส่วนร่วมและไม่เคยให้เวลากับลูก  เนื่องจากภารกิจที่รัดตัว
ครั้นเมื่อพ่อมีเวลาว่างหลังเกษียณ อยากจะใช้เวลาอยู่กับลูก  แต่ลูกก็เติบใหญ่และมีชีวิตของตัวเองที่รัดตัว
ไม่อาจปลีกเวลาให้กับพ่อได้เช่นกัน  ลอกเลียนรูปแบบชีวิตมาจากพ่อผู้เป็นต้นแบบอย่างไม่ผิดเพี้ยน 
สมกับที่ลูกเคยพูดเสมอๆตั้งแต่เล็กว่า

"I'm gonna be like you, dad. You know I'm gonna be like you."
โตขึ้นผมจะเป็นแบบพ่อนะครับ

และเขาก็ได้ข้อสรุปในประโยคสุดท้ายของวรรคสุดท้ายว่า

And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me,
He'd grown up just like me. My boy was just like me.
ขณะที่ฉันวางหูโทรศัพท์ลง พบว่าลูกชายเขาโตขึ้นมาเหมือนฉันไม่มีผิด

สร้อยเพลงในวรรคสองที่กล่าวถึง  

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.

คำเหล่านี้นำมาจากบทโคลงกล่อมเด็ก  ในเพลงนี้ใช้อุปมากับสถานการณ์ต่างๆในครอบครัวอันได้แก่ 
ครอบครัวที่อยู่ทางบ้าน  การแสวงหาความมั่งคั่ง  ลูกที่หงอยเหงา  และอนาคตที่วาดหวัง 
ทั้งหมดที่กล่าวมาล้วนต้องการเวลาและการเอาใจใส่  แต่โดยทั่วไปมักจะไม่มีความสมดุลกันในแง่ของเวลา  
มักจะมีการผลัดผ่อนว่า

"When you coming home, dad?"  
แล้วพ่อจะกลับบ้านตอนไหน

“I don't know when, But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then.”
ยังไม่รู้เลย ไว้มีเวลาเราค่อยมาเล่นสนุกด้วยกันนะลูก

ศัพท์และสำนวนที่ใช้

Arrive                                      ในที่นี้ใช้ในความหมายว่า ลูกมาเกิด

Come to the world                  ตรงกับสำนวนไทยว่าลืมตาดูโลก

'fore                                        กร่อนมาจากคำว่า  before

Turn                                         คำนี้ใช้กับอายุหมายถึง  ครบรอบอายุ  เช่น

My son will turn ten next month.  ลูกชายจะครบ 10 ขวบเดือนหน้า

Hassle                                      สับสนวุ่นวาย

Flu                                            ไข้หวัด     คำเต็มคือ Influenza
