เมื่อปีค.ศ. 1946 Jacques Heim นักออกแบบแฟชั่นสตรีจากเมืองแคนส์ ประเทศฝรั่งเศส
ได้ออกแบบชุดอาบน้ำที่มีขนาดเล็กมากจึงตั้งชื่อว่า Atome (ภาษาฝรั่งเศสแปลว่าอะตอม)
และโฆษณาว่าเป็น "the world's smallest bathing suit" (ชุดอาบน้ำที่เล็กที่สุดในโลก)
สามสัปดาห์ต่อมา Louis Reard ซึ่งเป็นวิศวกรเครื่องกลชาวฝรั่งเศสได้ออกแบบชุดอาบน้ำ
และคุยทับว่าเป็น "smaller than the smallest bathing suit in the world"
