It would be wrong to call this ultra-cool Californian outfit a rap-metal band, or indeed to try to crowbar them into any other category — what they do is just too diverse, with elements of funk, hard-rock and grunge thrown into the mix. And this, their third full-length album, is possibly their most diverse to date. As a follow-up to the multi-million-selling Make Yourself, they have truly surpassed themselves. Brandon Boyd’s silky smooth vocals and lyrics are, as ever, both soulfully uplifting and romantically accessible, while the music incorporates the best of both turntable and guitar. Special mention must go to the intense, building opener "Nice To Know You", the liltingly acoustic "Mexico" and powerfully emotive "Warning". This will be the album that turns these guys into stars.
