EMILY BAEHR MUSIC BIO

Pictures of me

I have lived in Cincinnati since 1995, and I have sung professionally since 1990. I used to live in Boston.

I sing in a variety of styles including classical with vibrato, absolutely straight tone, Balkan folk style, and jazz/pop/show tune style.

In 1994 I went to Germany for 3 months to seek employment in opera. This experience was valuable in many ways. I auditioned for six agents and seven houses, and sang at fancy dinner parties and in a cabaret. When I got back I moved to Cincinnati and joined up with the New Europa Troubadours. At that point my musical focus totally changed. I learned to play several instruments and took up learning Bulgarian folk singing. This technique is very different from Western classical singing technique - it's closer to Middle Eastern singing style.

Currently I sing with a number of projects, including Vernon McIntyre's Appalachian Grass; the New Europa Troubadours (Eastern European focused touring band); Auntie Em, an original country-folk female duo; Blacklight Braille , a 20-year-old recording project (psychedelic Arthurian folk); and Mummers Wren, a Celtic duo.

Since Oct. 1997 I have studied Bulgarian folk singing with Svetla Angelova, a folk singer from the Trakia (Thrace) region of Bulgaria. In summer 2000 I went to Balkan Camp in Mendocino, CA and studied Bulgarian and Romany song

I play concertina accordion, trumpet, keyboards, percussion, recorder and mandolin. I also compose and arrange music. There are several pieces of mine on the latest Blacklight Braille album, Castle of the Northern Crown, which you can buy at mp3.com.
