The story of Bethany

When all was normal
My Mum found me, aged 9 weeks, in a huge cage at Manchester Dogs’ Home with two kids arguing over me. Her, being the softy that she was & even though she’d gone there with no intention of bringing a puppy home, decided she had to rescue me and scooped me up into her arms and into her heart forever.
Me, being a puppy with no sense of gratitude whatsoever, decided to wreck the joint. I got through the kitchen lino, four out of the five dining chairs, three duvets, several plants, the new hall carpet, the three piece suite, the wallpaper, countless cushions (I really liked zips!), etc, etc. Poor old Lady, my new big sister, despaired of me and always managed to look soooo innocent to Mum - no wonder she always knew it was me!!
I had a really normal puppy hood with lots of friends to play with, fields & woods to run around in and tons of treats from Mum. I actually grew up to be a nice, well behaved dog, if you can believe it (still throw up in the car, mind!).

Summer 2000 was when it all went wrong. First, at the end of July, poor old Lady died. She had pneumonia, but because she’d got a heart murmur, the vet thought her heart was making her cough, and it was too late by the time he realised. She was a grand old 15 years young though, but me & Mum still miss her. Two weeks later my problems started. One of my discs slipped & damaged my spinal cord, leaving my back legs paralysed.
