His whole body, now exposed to the wasting atmosphere of Moon Mora, was sweating. Not from heat but from the reaction between the chemicals in the atmosphere and the sodium contained in the water filling each cell that made up his very being. The moisture was being sucked out of him. Breathing was easier if it was very shallow. He took steps, his toes feeling for the first time the rough floor of pebbles and sand and dust. He felt a sense of elation. He knew he would never again return – but what was important was that he had chosen this. And in the very choosing, he had set himself free. Without enough water, the Mapper knew his cells could not absorb enough oxygen to sustain him. The result he knew. He would die. |
