Hello and welcome to Westwind Rabbitry. I'm Debi Goldben and I live in central Florida. My family has been raising and showing rabbits since the fall of 1996, but we recently took a few years off from rabbits due to family and school schedules.
I’m really excited to have rabbits again. I missed them much more than I realized. I’ve always loved Satins but our cages were better suited to the smaller breeds and the kids were involved in Mini Rex and Netherland Dwarfs. I considered Mini Satins several years ago, but we never really had the cage space. I didn’t have to ponder my choice very long when I decided to get a few rabbits again.
The Mini Satin is a fairly new breed which was approved by the American Rabbit Breeders Association in 2006. It is a small, compact breed with a maximum show weight of 4.5 pounds for senior bucks and does. They, along with 2 other breeds, are unique in that their fur sparkles thanks to a more transparent hair shell.
I will be concentrating on White and Copper Mini Satins but will sometimes have other varieties available. I initially purchased a bred doe and a trio from Julie Akers of Inverness, Florida. Two of these were of her breeding and two were T.L. Andrews breeding (Bell, Florida). I also recently purchased a pair of Whites from Russ and Joan Giesy. All of my stock shows Collins lines on the pedigree -- this is the man who presented the breed for approval by the American Rabbit Breeders Assoc (ARBA).
