| September 13, 2003: In our long-anticipated season opener, Westhill had an impressive showing at the Cato-Meridian Invitational, bringing home a 1st-place Varsity trophy and 2nd-place JV honors. In the Varsity race, the top Westhill runner was Kevin Blaich, who finished a good 6th overall, followed by Tim Hartnett in 8th. Matt Zych finished 3rd for the team with Dave Riccardi 4th and Mark Leonard 5th. Matt Krawczyk had a great run today, considering it was his first Cross Country race ever. The Varsity team outscored OHSL B-2 rivals Homer and Chittenango (120 and 164, respectively) for the win. In the Junior Varsity race, freshman Greg Pallotta blazed to an early lead and coasted to win by nearly 30 seconds. Greg completely dictated the front pace and could have run even faster had there been someone to race. Following Greg was a tight pack of Westhill freshmen, including Will Pierce, Kevin Centore, Brendan Smith, Pat Hartnett, and Jim Ross. An impressive showing by our JV team, with 5 freshmen running as our top scorers; their close depth earned them a 2nd place finish in the Small Schools race, finishing behind a powerful team from Tully. Congratulations to everyone on a fine opening race today, including both the girls' Varisty and JV teams, who took home 1st-place honors. |
