-- St. Augustine, "De Genesi ad litteram libri duodecim"
(The Literal Meaning of Genesis)
Many religious people believe in a form of creation and oppose ideas about evolution, but the main debate over evolution has been between Christians who believe that the literalist Biblical account of creation should be taught in public school, and scientists who wish to preserve or increase the quality of science education including evolution in those same schools.
It is important to find the truth in these matters, as lying is sinful:
Pro 17:4 A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; [and] a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.
In my personal search for truth, I've found five broad categories of viewpoints in this debate. This is not to say that these are the only categories, but they are the major ones I've run across. I've written a page about each one because I believe each deserves special attention. The five categories are Young Earth Creationists (YEC), Old Earth Creationists (OEC), Intelligent Design (ID) Advocates, Evolutionists, and then there are the real fringe, the flat earthers and geocentrists.
All viewpoints do not have the same basis in evidence. They are not all equally valid, or equally scientific. Scientific information only comes from the scientific method and physical evidence.
I encourage everyone to go out and study this for themselves. On this page I will be sharing my opinions and commentary about the subject.
YECs believe that the earth is only 6000-15,000 years old, and they apply this to the universe as a whole as well. They take isolated facts that they find and try to interpet them in such a way as to make them fit their viewpoint. Most of the "Creationists" you see on tv, or read about, are young earthers.
Most OECs accept the scientifically established dates for the universe and the earth. They are less likely to dispute carbon dating or other scientific findings than the YECs are. There is a big variety within this group, and not all of them believe alike.
Advocates of Intelligent Design are either Old Earth Creationists or a limited type of evolutionists who believe that natural processes do not account for everything we see in the diversity of life. They will banter about terms like "evidence for design", "irreducible complexity", and other terms.
This is a catch-all term for those who accept the scientific explanation of the diversity of life on earth. It should be noted that abiogenesis (life from non-life) is a separate subject, though related. Evolution deals with "descent with modification". It's about life's diversity, not about the origin of life. There are a lot of myths about evolution, and hopefully I'll be able to address some of those in this section. The main one is that an evolutionist is an atheist, which is not necessarily true. There are also "theistic evolutionists" who believe that God, gods, or another supernatural force may have played a role in helping life along the right paths.

Stuck in the Dark Ages? I'm not talking about roleplayers here, I'm talking about people who still believe the earth is flat, the sun rotates about the earth, and other such ideas. There are people who really still believe this way, and like bubonic plague, which still infects some people, their ideas didn't disappear after the Dark Ages.

Read this if you wish to know how I made my journey out of the dark of creationism. It was neither easy nor fast, but it was a journey worth taking.
