 September 11th, 2001
From
sea to shining sea, Canada borders the United States of America. We are the
freedom loving defenders of democracy to its north. Yet, despite our border,
Canada and the U.S.A. are more than geographical outlines on a map. We are
neighbors and we are friends.
The flags on both sides of the border
are lowered to half- mast. What happens to one of us, happens to us
all.
As the events of Tuesday September 11, 2001 unfolded, time froze.
World order, as we knew it, dissolved. The ensuing chaos assaulted our senses.
Confusion, shock and horror struck our hearts. The sense of security we woke up
with - so easily - that morning, was shaken with each exploding airplane. It
crumbled in a cloud of debris as the twin towers of the World Trade Center came
crashing down in New York City. We were vulnerable. Roots, deeply embedded in
the emancipated soil of freedom and democracy, were pulled up and
torn.
With its incomprehensible destruction and blatant disregard for
human life, terrorism staggered our concrete reality. What it failed, miserably
failed to do, was break our spirits.
The interminable hours of Tuesday
tested the grit in our souls. We found the depth of our sadness, the scope of
our compassion and the strength of our resolve. Those of us who were frustrated
by the inability to physically help in the rescue operations, did the most
powerful thing we knew how to do. Pray.
Across the U.S.A. and Canada,
from homes, from street corners, from churches with their doors flung open,
recitations of the faithful rose above the acts of the despicable. In the
downing of four commercial American airplanes, Truth took flight on the
wings of prayer.
We, the defenders of freedom, have the biggest
Champion of freedom on our side. God. He gave us the freedom to choose, the
freedom to believe. Unlike a dictator, He does not force His will on the
people. He is the illustration of love, not its antithesis.
We are
afraid, but we do not walk by fear. We walk by faith. We cannot see
straight, but we do not walk by sight alone. We walk by faith. We are
overwhelmed by sadness, but we will not drown in our sorrow. We are
irrepressible. |

Canada
stands resolute with her American friends and neighbors.
