Helen Hunt & Hank Azaria
July.17.1999

.The Bride & Groom.
Helen Elizabeth Hunt (born June 15, 1963) is an Emmy, Golden Globe and Academy Award-winning actress. She is the second woman ever to win an Oscar and an Emmy in the same year (1998). She is most notably known for her role in the NBC sitcom, Mad About You. Helen also has several hit movies under her belt as well, including; Twister, What Women Want, As Good As It Gets and Bobby.

Henry Albert Azaria (born April 25, 1964) is a four-time Emmy Award-winning actor, comedian and voice artist. Azaria is perhaps best known for his voice work on the animated television show The Simpsons. He has provided the voices for over 160 characters on the show. He also has had bit parts in many films, including Along Came Polly, The Birdcage, America's Sweethearts and Godzilla.

Helen and Hank's romance begain in 1994, the two were already acquaintances and one day bumped into each other. They struck up a conversation and that led to a four-hour lunch. When asked how they became a couple, Hank joked, "I auditioned, like everyone else." Not a lot is known about their courtship because they were very private about it. Hunt told Cosmopolitan in 1996, their love was "precious." But, she cautioned her interviewer, "talking about it would be like rubbing a cat the wrong way." The two frequently worked together, Hank guest stared occasionally on Mad About You as Ned the dogwalker and Helen supplied the voice of Moe's girlfriend in a 1998 episode of The Simpsons. They reportedly became engaged in 1997.

.The Location.
The private ceremony was held at their still-under-construction Los Angeles home.

.The Guests.
The guest list of about 10 people, including Helen's Mad About You costar Paul Reiser, Friends’ Mathew Perry and Austin Powers himself, Mike Myers. "It was a very intimate, beautiful wedding," one attendee stated.

.The Attire.
According to PEOPLE magazine, the bride wore a simple, understated gown.

.The Ceremony.
The guests arrived at 5pm, probably not even knowing they were about to witness a traditional Jewish wedding.

.The Reception.
While the couple and their guests enjoyed shrimp, chicken and grilled veggies, the couple premiered a homemade movie spoof of their romance, which began in 1994.

Matthew Perry, in a toast, joked about the price of celebrity- which for the couple included hiring guards with night-visiongoggles and posting them in the trees surrounding the property.

As the reception wound down, the barefoot bride exchanged her simple, understated gown for sweats. Guests danced beneath the stars or shot pool in a makeshift billiard room. By 2 a.m. the newlyweds, were lingering amid bouquets of roses and sunflowers. "Helen," says one acquaintance, "has a thing for yellow flowers."

"It was a lovely day. A happy, lovely, private day. A private, happy, lovely, private day," Hank says of their wedding day.

.Miscellaneous Details.
NZ Woman's Weekly reported on April 13, 1998 that Hunt, just coming off her Oscar win, was 'down in the dumps because her huge success has sparkes jealous rows with fiance Hank Azaria. He feels overshadowed by Helen and reportedly refuses to set a date for their wedding- because he feels their marriage wouldn't last.' If this is true, he was right. A comment Azaria made about her Oscar win does actually put some merrit into the jealousy rumor, ""It [the Oscar statue] just stares at me. It's like 'You can hold me, but you can't have me!'"

Just five days after the ceremony the newlyweds arrived smiling and waving at the L.A. premiere of Mystery Men. This is the event where the photo of the two featured on this page was taken.

.The Honeymoon.
Initially, the couple had to wait on their honeymoon until at least October due to Azaria being scheduled to work on the film, Tuesdays With Morrie.

.The Divorce.
The New York Daily News reported in June 2000 that Azaria had moved out of their home earlier that month and was staying at the Bel-Air Hotel under a false name. In August, Hunt’s publicist, Steven Huvane, confirmed that that the couple had been separated for a few months. At that time, Helen's rep said, "They're still very good friends, and it was a decision they came to together." Azaria's rep, Stan Rosenfeld, issued a similar statement

Helen officially filed for divorce on December 18th, 2000. According to her Los Angeles Superior Court divorce petition, Hunt cited irreconcilable differences as the reason to end her 17-month marriage to Azaria.

So, what went wrong? There is no official statement about what happened, as the two were always very private. I do remember something about rumors of Hank cheating on Helen. The reason it stands out in my mind is because I remember thinking, 'Why would he cheat on her? He's a dork.' And then when I saw his body in the movie Along Came Polly, I was like 'Oohhh, dork boy is working a hot bod. That explains the cheating.'

However, most reports say the split was due to the couple being apart too much. After their wedding, Hunt threw herself into four high-profile, back-to-back films (What Women Want, Cast Away, Dr T. and the Women & Pay it Forward) and Azaria busied himself with movies as well (Cradle Will Rock & Tuesdays With Morrie).
