Web Activities for Desperate Teachers
Activity:  My Country

Web Page:

www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html

This activity lends itself well to students working in pairs or groups.  Divide the students  according to country.  Some countries will only have one or two students.  Some countries will have a huge group of students.  Have the students get on the CIA site and find information about their country.  Here is a handout that they can use to write down some information.  You can download the handout here.  When the studennts are ready, they can bring in pictures, maps, posters and give a short (five minutes) oral report on their country.
This is an interactive exercise on countries and nationalities

Activity:  How To Look For An Apartment On Craigslist

Web Page:
www.craigslist.org

Craigs list is a wonderful resource for finding cars, apartments, furniture, jobs, etc.  You can restrict your search and that allows you to look more effectively.  Since different students have different needs, you will need to give them some digree of freedom as to what they are going to look for.   If they are not looking for a place to live, they could search for furniture, jobs, household items. auto parts, lessons, etc
Once they click on the category, there will be some fields that can be used to restrict their search.  This activity works really well as an addition to

Activity: Where I Am And Where I Want To Go

Web page:
http://factfinder.census.gov/home/en/kids/funfacts/funfacts.html

The United States is a big country with a lot of places to see.  If you are doing anything on geography you may want to get your students on the computer and explore the rest of the Nation.  Students could work individually and then present their completed grid in front of the class.

Activity:  My Dream House

Web Page:
www.realtor.com
In this exercise studets look for their dream house, take notes and talk about it to the class.  Students need to type the city and state they are looking in, choose the price range, choose the number of bedrooms and baths.  Some houses have a virtual tour (a small red house icon).  The virtual tour allows you to see the inside of the house.  Have them select a "dream house" in a reasonable price range, take notes and talk about it to the class.

Activity:  Tell a Joke

Web Pages:
http://iteslj.org/c/jokes.html
The above site has audio

http://www.english-zone.com
Go down to Fun Stuff Zone and click on Easy to Understand Jokes
This site has vocabulary words that are linked to their meaning.  It alsos has a link at the bottom that explains the joke in case the studetns don't understand it.

What you can do with it:

Choose a joke and make a short vocabulary list.  Put two students to work together at one computer.  Have them read a joke that you have previously chosen.  Pass out the vocabulary list or write it on the board and go over the words.  Don't make it too long, otherwise it takes the fun out of the activity.  The students are supposed to read the joke and listen to it if possible.   They are supposed to read it enough times to be able to repeat it to the class.  Have the students stand in front of the class and tell the joke.  They can use notes if necessary
