INSTRUCTORS
Instructors again in 2008 will be Jeannie McFarland and Opal Olsen.
Jeannie, author of two popular instruction books on Pine Needle Raffia Basketry,
will be guiding new and experienced coilers though several projects.
Jeannie has 35 years of experience coiling and teaching pine needle basketry.
She holds a Masters of Arts Degree, writing her thesis on
Pine Needle Raffia Basketry.
Opal Olsen is a well known Haida weaver.  She was the 1st woman to receive the Northwest Coast Native Arts Certificate from the University of Alaska and is an apprentice to master weaver Delores Churchill.  At this years workshop Opal will be focusing on  Spruce Root Basketry including the collecting and preparing of the roots.  Opal‘s knowledge of the natural materials and their preparation for use in creating baskets is unsurpassed.
WORKSHOP SESSIONS
The workshop is a special blend of formal classroom instruction, collecting trips and
evening sessions.  The Pine Needle Raffia Basketry sessions will give participants the
opportunity to learn how to create the beautiful Tenerife patterns that are the basis for
these baskets.  You will then attach coils of long leaf pin needles to complete the basket.
Variations to the basic basket will also be explored.
Participants that want to work on more advanced projects will have
Jeannie’s help completing them.
A full 5 days will be dedicated to Spruce Root Basketry in 2008.
Preparation of the natural materials is crucial in creating a basket.
Participants will have the rare opportunity to collect and prepare the
Spruce Roots before creating a basket from the roots with master weaver Opal Olsen.
Following the two formal classroom sessions there will be an opportunity to collect Cedar Bark for a day and prepare it for future use.
Interesting evening sessions have always been a highlight of the
Coiling and Weaving Workshop and this year will be no exception.
