Adopt-A-District

Welcome to the sisters of the Western District! We hope that if you are taking the time to read this, you have decided to participate in the Adopt-A-District program, or are thinking about it. We believe that this program is a great way to promote the Western District, exchange ideas with other chapters, and to meet awesome sisters from around the nation.

If you are worried about a huge influx of emails in your mailbox, you can always use your chapter's tbsigma.org account. Soon Nationals will only accept emails from those accounts, so we all might as well get used to using them now.

Each participating WD chapter will be assigned a district to communicate with. We have recommendations on how to do this easily and quickly and without leaving all the work to the corresponding secretary. If your chapter would like to participate and is interested in corresponding with a particular district, and it is not already taken, please let Alison know.

Click on each District to find a list of email addresses for each chapter that can be cut and pasted into the mailing list portion of mail servers like Hotmail. They can also be individually put into the mailing list portion of the Contacts section of Outlook Express. If anyone has questions about how to do this, Alison will be more then happy to help you.

This is what we recommend:

Once a month send out a mass email to all the chapters in your assigned district. It does not have to be a terribly longwinded letter, just a basic greeting to everyone in that district, and maybe a little synopsis of what your chapter is doing, or what is happening in the Western District.

Once a semester or quarter send personalized cards or postcards to each chapter. Now this sounds tough, but here are a few ideas on how to do this quickly.

EK's beautiful President, Hilary Douglas, did this last year, and it worked very well. At a meeting, or a sleepover, give each sister a piece of paper and let them pick a chapter or chapters in the district that they would like to write to. Fold the paper twice to make it into a card. The beauty part is that if you do not have that much to say, there is not that much space to write. Use crayons, markers or stickers to decorate it. Each sister can think up a little note to write, or a mass letter can be sent to all. Handwritten letters are the best ones to receive, and usually greatly appreciated. Each sister can then address the letters that she/he wrote. If each member writes to one or more chapters, this will cut down on time, and make writing to all the chapters almost painless and hopefully fun.
This same thing can be done with postcards. Postcards of your area or university would be good things to send. Personalized postcards are also great and not very hard to make. Just use 4 in. by 6 in. index cards, and use a glue stick to glue together three or four of them. You can also use poster board and cut out 4 in. by 6 in. rectangles, but that is a little more costly. They can be decorated with crayons, markers, or stickers, but Alison personally likes to paste on scanned pictures. If each member makes one or two and then writes on them it should not take very much time.
If you have a little more time you can make non-standard postcards (these usually require extra postage). The easiest way to do this is with posterboard. Cut out ovals, circles, squiggly shapes, shapes with jagged edges, etc.
This also requires a little more time. Make a postcard, non-standard or standard, with posterboard. Decorate one side and write on the entire other side. Cut the postcard into puzzles pieces and put in an enevelope. This can be a fun activity if everyone joines in.
