2/04/04: Charde Houston, San Diego High senior became the state's all-time leading scorer. Houston scored 35 points in San Diego's 90-33 win over visiting Patrick Henry, surpassing the mark of Basketball Hall of Famer Cheryl Miller… Houston increased her career total to 3,472 points. Miller scored 3,446 for Riverside Poly from 1979-82. The national record of 4,502 points is held by Missy Thomas of Gibsland-Coleman High (La.) in 1992-95… Last month, Houston surpassed former Santa Fe Christian standout Brandi Collato (3,325) atop the San Diego Section career scoring list. The 6-foot-2 senior forward also holds the San Diego Section single-game scoring record with 71 points against Castle Park last season…. 1/22/04: The 36 points give Houston 3,339, surpassing the 3,325 scored by Collato while attending Santa Fe Christian from 1998 to 2001. Houston, who has accepted a scholarship to the University of Connecticut, set the record in 111 games. Collato, now at USD, used 124 to top the legendary Terri Mann, who scored 3,188 while leading Point Loma to four straight state titles from 1984 to '87. “We received three letters, Charde Houston (San Diego, CA/San Diego HS), Mel Thomas (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame HS), and Ketia Swanier (Columbus, GA/Columbus HS). I think we signed three pretty good players. I feel we signed exactly what we needed. We signed a good guard that can push the ball, another guard that can shoot and is a tough kid that knows how to play, and someone who can do a lot of things and is the best offensive player to come out of high school in Charde Houston. I feel pretty good about our class.”

Charde Houston, a 6-foot-1 forward rated among the top players in the nation, signed a letter of intent with UConn on Tuesday...."I think we signed three pretty good players," coach Geno Auriemma said.... 11/18/03: Top-ranked UConn, which has won three of the last four NCAA women's basketball titles, won the recruiting war for the 6-foot-2 forward over UCLA and Texas.Houston said UConn coach Geno Auriemma told her she'd be a shooting forward, which suits Houston just fine, although she said she also likes to mix it up under the basket. She averaged 35.6 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists, four steals and three blocks last season for San Diego High. 11/16/03Charde Houston, a 6-foot-1 forward from San Diego, canceled a press conference Wednesday when she was expected to sign a letter of intent with UConn. A late bid by Texas has created uncertainty within the family, sources familiar with the recruiting process said…. 11/04/03....With two commitments in hand, the Huskies continue to wait for a decision from Charde Houston, a 6-1 forward from San Diego.Houston, rated No. 7 by Blue Star and a Street & Smith second-team All-American, will visit UCLA this weekend. Along with UConn, she is also considering Tennessee and Texas. Cincinnati guard says yes to UConn women and MND star Thomas to play at UConn and  Thomas, Swanier Bolster Backcourt  and  Guards Thomas, Swanier commit to UConn women  and Thomas Chooses UConn

 

11/03/03: Charde Houston has been traveling across the country to tour the colleges that covet her. She's been to Tennessee and Connecticut and will go to UCLA next week.  Houston's mother, who accompanied her to Texas, did not make the trip to Connecticut two weeks ago, but her presence in Austin should not be seen as an advantage for the Longhorns. She made it clear that the choice of school is her daughter's decision. Mom cheers, college coaches keep fingers crossed

 

11/03/03:...UConn is also still waiting to hear from 6-1 forward Charde Houston and 5-9 guard Mel Thomas (Cincinnati). It was reported in Sunday's Cincinnati Enquirer that Thomas was scheduled to made a decision as early as today, choosing between UConn, Duke, Ohio State and Cincinnati. 8/27/03: As of right now, Charde Houston has kept her list of schools wide open, with Texas, Tennessee, UConn, New Mexico, North Carolina, Duke, Rutgers and UCLA all making the cut….Currently,  Houston has not planned to make official visits to any universities but will make her final decision sometime in the first week of November. 8/18/03:The Bruins have two more scholarships to fill...UCLA is believed to be making a push for a pair of top-10 national recruits – LaJolla Country Day forward Candice Wiggins and Charde Houston of San Diego High....Houston appears to be a bit of a longshot while Wiggins has stated recently that Stanford is her top choice. 8/17/03: Charde Houston 6-1 guard made history Tuesday when she became the first female to compete in the adidas Big Time prep basketball tournament, a summer staple in Las Vegas since 1995....At the night session, coaches for the Kentucky, UCLA and Connecticut women's teams watched Houston play, and she named those three first on her wish list. Tennessee, Duke, Georgia and North Carolina are also on her radar….She was named to the Parade Magazine All-America second team in April for averaging 35.6 points as a junior. 7/28/03: Last week, the Adidas Top Ten Girls All-American Camp was held in Suwanee, Ga. More than 200 players participated, including several of the top recruits in the Class of 2004. Four of those players - Candace Wiggins 5-11 SF, Charde Houston, Essence Carson and Erlana Larkins - are at or near the top of UConn's wish list. ….Charde Houston  5-11 guard from San Diego, ranked No. 3 by ASGR….According to observers, Houston was one of the top players at the Adidas camp….Houston also has Tennessee, Texas, Georgia, Rutgers and Virginia on her list Many Styles Of Adidas

 

Charde Houston of San Diego and Essence Carson of Paterson, N.J., both ranked among the nation's top 10 high school basketball prospects, last week attended the Texas women's advanced training basketball camp and said they were considering playing their college ball in Austin for various reasons....Carson is a gifted musician who plays piano, saxophone and bass guitar and hopes to pursue a career in music. "Not only (does Texas) have a good basketball team, but they have a great music program and they're adding a new major in instrumental producing," she said.

 

Houston is rated the nation's No. 3 prospect behind Alexis Hornbuckle of West Virginia and Candace Parker of Chicago, but McCormick said she could ultimately prove to be the best player in the nation. "If she was as polished as Candace Parker, we would make her No. 1," McCormick said. "She's a little raw with her footwork, but in two years she might be better than both (Parker and Hornbuckle). You can't stop her. She has no weaknesses. Physically, she's ready to play at the next level." ..."She's so fast, she's so big and she's so strong, she could get every rebound," said Marlon Wells, her coach at San Diego High School. "If she's driving to the basket and gets fouled, she's carrying people to the basket with her. That's why she's so attractive to college coaches and why she's rated so high." ...Houston indicated she would visit Texas, but said she hasn't decided on any others. 7/24/03: Charde Houston has visited Texas and will visit Rutgers, Connecticut and Cincinnati in the next few months. She also knows to list the schools with a qualifier: they are in no particular order....ASGR rates the 6-1 forward No. 3 in its pre-summer rankings for the class of 2004. Houston's ability to play on the wing, shoot from the perimeter as well as operate inside supports that ranking.
