Yes, I'm sure I'm breaking all sorts of copyright laws and international treaties, but I sincerely love the Waffle House, it's just America at it's purest...

I like to go to the Waffle House at 3am for breakfast or at 1am for "Delicious Pie". Yes, if you look on the Waffle House menu, they tell you right there that the pie is delicious. Personally, I recommend the chocolate pie. One time the waitress warned me it hadn't thawed, but it was actually better frozen stiff. Trust me.

Hey, you know Bert from the menu? Yeah, you know what I'm talking about. Well, he's now the President of Waffle House, Inc. Here's his old business card:

I just got a kick out of reading your WH shrine. You are definitely hard core. :)

My husband is a district manager for WH. Living on the Gulf Coast, he was just mobilized with a group of the head honchos (his boss's boss and his boss's boss's boss...if that makes sense) to go to New Orleans and help with the Hurricane Gustav recovery efforts. Waffle House has a history of doing such.

I "used" to have a WH menu that was autographed by Shaquille O'Neal (he stopped at one of my husband's stores for some omlets), but alas, my office flooded and the autograph was spoiled. So, the next best thing would be pictures of Shaq IN Waffle House...which are on my home PC. I'll have to send them later. :)

    Hi Kamran,

I came across you page while searching for a picture of a Waffle House Waitress, it is going to be my Halloween costume this year. My husbands group just wrote and produced a new song called Waffle House Waitress and I thought that you might be interested in hearing it. So here is the website address

    http://www.myspace.com/thedisregarded

Just look to the music player on the right and scroll down to the last song. If you have any pictures of the current WH uniform I would love to see them.

    Thanks,

    Hi:

Growing up in Florida, Virginia, Alabama and North Carolina...I've been hopelessly addicted to Waffle House and Krystal Burger restaurants ever since I can remember...for different reasons...Waffle House for food and Krystles to cure or forestall a hangover.

Now, I live in the Rockies of south central Montana as well as in a little fishing village about 2/3rds of he way down the Baja Peninsula on Mexico's Sea of Cortez. I eat plenty of fish, vegetables and fresh fruit...but I dream about Waffle Houses. Well, that may be overstating it a bit, but not by much. I stumbled across this site while looking for the lyrics to the Reverend Billy C. Wirtz's "Waffle House Fire" and realize I'm not alone in my fixation...my dependency...my JONES!

Waffle House, my heartfelt thinks to all of you...especially to you employees...all of you. I've NEVER had a bad Waffle House experience. Weird? HELL, YES...I'm a writer and weird is just grist for the mill...but what I'd like to know is how to get a compendium of addresses listing every Waffle House in the United States? Either in print or even better on a GPS locator readout. I drive around and about this country a lot...it would be wonderful to be able to hopscotch between restaurants should I so desire. Waffle House is ON THE ROAD food! Any one able to help? Thanks.

    hey there,

Don't know how i got to your web site, but I was flicking for a public pool listing and you site came up, very cute and light hearted. I like the waffle house because I love the food. But you see I'm not from here, so sometimes I get attitudes, but I treat em "sweet as toast" and we're just fine!

Our order is Waffle, Ham... not country, but city...home fries, not hash browns (or is it hash browns??) I don't know I stand corrected on both issues. And have them well done, please. Of course coffee and I nicely ask for a fresh pot...(but that has pissed off a few) and two waters with lemon. I now go with my father and daughter; me and her split the above and he gets the special, with raisin toast.

I've been there for years, worked with my sister and went there for lunch. She was an all out Waffle house junkie and ordered the chili, grilled cheese and a pecan waffle ~ gross huh? But we have lots of funny stories from the Waffle House and got some picture to prove it! Enjoy!

Years 'n years ago there weren't any Waffle Houses in Chattanooga, Tennessee. One week-end I was going down to Atlanta to visit with a first cousin. I had left home rather early that day and was getting a bit hungry as I approached Atlanta. As I was nearing Atlanta on U.S. Highway 41 I could see the downtown buildings in the distance. About that time I noticed a "Waffle House" restaurant on the left side of the road.

I stopped and went in and sat down and looked over the menu. Being a lot younger then, I ordered three scrambled eggs, a double order of bacon, and wheat toast. Then for dessert I asked for apple pie, heated with butter. Tasted very good, so I ordered another slice! That Waffle House experience was such a pleasant one that after a two-day visit with the cousin I just HAD to stop at the Waffle House again!

My wife and I are both retired and being 'night people' we visit one of the near-by Waffle Houses regularly, sometimes away up in the wee hours of the morning!

When my husband and I were in the early years of our marriage, both our families expected us to make an appearance on Christmas Day. No small task since they lived about 50 miles apart! After a hectic Christmas Eve opening presents with our son, we would pack up the car with gifts and head out on Christmas Day.

One Christmas morning about 10 years ago we left home about 9:00 a.m. for our in-laws. Since we left very early we didn't eat breakfast and, and found ourselves hungry. We looked and looked for a place to eat but, it being Christmas Day nothing was open. Until we came to a Waffle House. We decided to stop and, upon entering the store, found it to be jam packed with people just like us!

We talked to a lot of people, listened to Christmas music, and ate a nice breakfast. In fact, we had such a great time that my husband and I have made a trip to a Waffle House on Christmas (or near to it) an annual ritual. In fact, we just went yesterday morning for our 2008 Christmas visit!

gotta love the waho ... my wife has been employed with waho for 24 years she is currently in NC and manager of a local waho ... when she started she started with bert at one of the stores he has been at ... in Fayetteville, NC they just had the Waffle House Road Show where managers from abroad come and learn about new products, etc... Bert was there and greeted my wife by first name and told her he would be by her store in 2 days since he was near by ... to remember employees by first name after years apart and as many employees as they have is amazing ... waho has paid our bills for a very long time and hate to admit it as much as I complain about the hours she puts in (and she has her moments, too) it has stood by our family for many years ... we have 8 kids between us and they don't hurt for nothing ... my daughter loves to go to work with her momma and "help" her do her work .... with the long history of waho i see it always being there for us

    Hello

My name Serena. I have been with WH for almost 11 years now. I am currently a salesperson at #167 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. I enjoy my work. I love meeting the different kinds of folks that come to the WH.

    Anyway here is my story:

It was 5 years ago that i met my husband. We met at WH. He was the cook and I was the waitress. We worked together for like a year and than one day I decided to ask him out... well he said sure and we have been together every since...

    Thanks for listening,
Serena from #167 in Hot Springs Arkansas

I have eaten at WH in several states due to being on the road a lot in past years and the one I remember the most is in Gainesville Fla.. At 2:30 in the morning after driving for 12 hours was greeted by enthusiatic employees and watched in amazement while the guy on the grill was breaking eggs, 2 in each hand, 4 at a time and never got a speck of shell into the meal. I don't know who he was but he impressed an old redneck from Georgia.

I’ve been incredibly lucky with my career to have had the opportunity to work and live in many places all over the world and to experience the food of many different cultures. Regardless of the many fine meals I’ve had in Italy, France, Japan, Australia, Canada, Germany and the US, Waffle House is my favorite comfort food. Right now, we are living in Japan, but I am fortunate to have a client in Miami and I am able to visit the US once a month. No matter how tired I am after 15 hours of flying from Japan, the first thing I do when I land in Miami is to head to Waffle House in Davie, Florida for a Pecan Waffle and Hash Browns covered all the way. Conversely, the last thing I do before I head to Japan is head up I75 to Davie, FL for a last meal at Waffle House. One experience of note that I had recently on my flight back to Japan. I fly All Nippon Airways (ANA) out of Washington DC to Tokyo and since I generally fly at the same time each month, I’ve gotten to know a couple of the flight attendants on this route. I was talking about my favorite places to eat with one of them on my flight back to Tokyo in June and I mentioned Waffle House. My ANA flight attendant said that on her layover in DC, she and friend always head to the Waffle House in Frederick, MD for a meal and that several of the ANA flight attendants do so as well. So Waffle House is even well known in Japan as being a place to get great food. We will be in Japan for the next 10 years or so and it would nice if Waffle House launched its first international location in Japan, as it would be a great hit!

Is there any chance of me finding a past employee of Waffle House on Shorter Ave in Rome, Ga?? The year of employment would have been 1969 or 1970. His name is Tony (not sure of last name) and he worked as a cook on 3rd shift. I've tried contacting the main headquarters but no luck with a return call. I was hoping someone on your website might live in Ga. and know who I am talking about....

Waffle House is AWESOME!!! My mother and I go to Waffle House all the time and we go usually around 2:00AM. Everybody is so nice and friendly and the food is so incredibly good. I wish they would make Waffle House ornaments (shaped like a Waffle House) and t shirts!

One time, my sister, mother and I were at my house. My sister said "Mom, it's 2:00 AM" - most mothers would say, oh gosh, it's time to go home. Not my ma - she said "Waffle House!" And she's 77 years old!!! So, off to Waffle House we went!! She loves the waffles! (okay, she's normal!) while I get the steak sandwich and hash browns smothered, covered, capped, etc etc - the more the merrier!!! You guys are the best!! A piece of Americana!!!

    Love,
    Marte

I am currently a Waffle House Grill Operator and Salesperson at Unit #1658 in Haughton, LA. I've been with Waffle House for a little over a year and I love it. We have a great staff and the best customers.

Before I started working for waffle house I loved to go in and sober up after a night out with friends. I never thought I would be able to keep up with taking orders and remembering what food goes where, much less how to call out the food to the cooks, but since I've been here I've figured it out and love it. Waffle House is the best job I've ever had, we are the friendliest people and really and truly are one big family.

    Jessica

Thanks to all the girls at #215 in Cookeville, Tennessee. You run like a well-oiled machine, keep up the great work and attitudes.

    Charles

I love Waffle house. Always have. They are so friendly.

    Here is my story.

My husband and I were trapped in New Orleans for Katrina........I am a nurse, he is a paramedic. After days of working nonstop in a city hospital we were finally flown over the flood to a bus and evacuated to Lafayette, where we got off at 4am filthy, sweaty and tired, dragging what was left of our belongings with us.

We saw Waffle House and went in to use their bathroom to sponge off and have a hot meal. The waitress saw us, and asked if we'd been evacuated. We told her our story. With tears in her eyes, as she served our meal, she told us of losing her own home and job there...that she was working temporarily after being evacuated herself..........and paid for our meals!

Our hearts were so touched by that after the ordeal in the city........that this Waffle House employee who had also lost so much would do that for us........that of course we cried.

It has been two years since the storm, but the memory of that waitress still brings tears to our eyes.

And yes, it was wonderful to see a familiar site open in the middle of the night where we could have a meal and try to figure out how to get to our son's house. That sign brings good memories to us both.

    Joyce

Yes it is true Waffle House is back on the coast. We were the first fast food to rebuild on the coast. You see signs up by IHOP but they have had a year and still nothing, but Waffle House said it and did it. We now have our second one being rebuilt as I speak. The store at Courthouse Road, Gulfport MS #199. In Long Beach, MS not more than 10 miles down the beach road from Courthouse the third Waffle House is being built. They both will be done by the middle of November.

My name is Kay Matthews I have worked for the Waffle House since 2001 in Paducah, KY #1495 and after the hurricane we moved down to help recover the coast. My husband works construction and I am a Waffle House Grill Operator/Salesperson.

We found a house for $400 a month where everyone else has tripled the rent down here because of the hurricane. This landlady didn't. Thank God.

We need more Waffle House employees. No one wants to work. The coast is coming back strong so people, if you moved because of Katrina please come back.

I work at Renoir Street in Biloxi MS #430 across from the Beau Rivage Casino. We are the #1 in sales of all the Waffle Houses. The casinos are busy everyday, now we have 10 back up and running.

Hope you put me on the Waffle House Shrine so everyone can see we are coming back on the coast strong now. Thanks to you we can voice our opinions about our experience at the Waffle Houses in the U.S.

    Thanks
    Kay Matthews

    Ahoy ahoy!!!

Man was I glad to see this site, although I assumed that I wasn’t the only Waffle House fan out there. Do we get official numbers??

Here’s my story: I’m a Canadian college student. Last spring we went from my little town in Northern Ontario (nowhere near Toronto) to Panama City, Florida for spring break. Having never heard of the Waffle House before we soon began to wonder what it was as we passed it quite frequently along the ride. Even if we couldn’t see the building itself, we could see the sign high about the trees lining the highway. After a 26 hour bus ride, tired and starving we were ecstatic to see a Waffle House up the road (or so we thought) from the hotel that we were staying. Deciding to walk, we began our trek to the Waffle House. 45 minutes and very sore feet later we finally got there, only to wait in line. Well let me tell you… were we amazed at the Great Food, Great Service and overall Fabulous experience. We left there that day extremely full, and very satisfied, vowing to return before the trip is over. Unfortunately, as spring break tends to be, it was very drunk and messy and we didn’t make it back to the Waffle House, but decided that as soon as we got home we would find the nearest one and make the road trip.

    FAST FORWARD

Here we are today: We have not made it to the Waffle House, but have planned a road trip to Ohio (being the closest state with the most amount of Waffle Houses) to visit as many Waffle Houses as we can, only eating at Waffle Houses, while enjoying the general awesomeness (?) that is Ohio. The trip is set for two weeks from now, during my reading week, before the weather becomes too horrendous to drive.

    But that is my story,
    Northern Waffle House Fan

PS: Any hints of a good round-about trip or any good attractions to see along the way?

    Nice site.

Robert says he's looking for the song "Waffle House Fire" by the Reverend Billy C. Wirtz. It's about an actual WH fire in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and it's on his album Backslider's Tractor Pull. Just looked it up on Amazon.com and they've got used copies available at six bucks and up.

Not that anyone cares, but I'm the guy in the cowboy hat just to the reverend's left, on the cover. Oh, and I ate in a Waffle House in Hattiesburg -- apparently not the one in the song -- a couple of weeks ago.

Fell in love with WH the first time I walked in, freshman year of high school. From that point on we spent more time in WH than we did in classes. Plus, there is no better place to study than in the corner booth at Waffle House with the smell of cigarettes, grease and coffee at 2 in the morning. Ten years later I am a dedicated patron and eventually got my (now) husband hooked. We make it a point to eat there at least once a month (would be more but we are poor). It has helped out considerably that they now take visa and we don't have to make a dash to the ATM before we head over there.

Every time I start craving a waffle we head that way but never end up getting one. Our tradition is second booth from the bathroom, Coffee (black) a glass of water and a Texas Cheese Steak plate w/ extra hashbrowns. So here is our dilemma: HOW do you make those Texas Cheese Steaks at home!?! We have attempted but to no prevail. We just cant get the seasoning right. All you WH employees: do you get the meat already seasoned? and if so, can I buy some? Also, we managed to buy 2 coffee mugs a couple of months ago for $5 each (would have bought more but there again, we are poor). Tried to buy some more last night after dinner but they said they don't sell them (same store as the first time, mind you). So, how do I get some more mugs? Those mugs remind us of home and I cant keep washing mine every morning. My husband and I keep fighting over the clean one since we only have 2.

    Thanks and happing eating :)

Just ate with wife and kids at Waffle House just outside Atlanta GA. I think store # 638, at any rate I loved the chef's visor hat which was red and had Waffle House spelled out and Grill Master on the brim. I asked her if I could buy a hat like that, she said no way you have to earn this hat after 18 years of working there. WOW that's a lot of eggs and waffles I thought. Then I saw a black visor with WH on the front and a black plastic brim. This hat was really cool too. Just think, a new cult of WH hats for all types of people to wear. You know a cool club, young, rich, poor, old, whatever an elite club. So I asked if that one was available to buy and she said no. About two minutes later another waitress came out and gave me her hat. WOW a cool WH hat. I then realized it was used and had waffle batter on the brim and in on the inside head band was crusty old hair gel. I was too proud to give it back so I have washed it and now wear it well to our yacht club. People have loved the story of the hat. LETS GET WH CORPORATE TO SELL THIS HATS.

    Mike from Miami, FL

Let me first saw how much I love Waffle House. I grew up in a poor household, we didn't have hardly any money at all. Right down the street where we lived was a Waffle House. Over the years I spent allot of time in that Waffle House. After I got out of college I went back home to see my family and for old times sake we went to eat at Waffle House. There was this pretty young lady that waited on us and I was just floored by her beauty and wit. To make a long story short, I married that Waffle House waitress and when ever we get down and blue, we eat at Waffle House!

    Billy

I live outside of Buffalo NY, and the closest Waffle house is in Painesville Ohio...which isn't a short trip by any means, but my boyfriend (who is just as addicted as me) and I ride our motorcycles there on Sunday morning (weather permitting) just to get some scattered, smothered, chunked and peppered hashbrowns!! OMG they are to die for! PLEASE PLEASE open a WH closer!! We got hooked on our many trips to Nashville, Tn. I've tried to make them at home, but they're just not the same :( What's a northern girl to do when she craves WH??????..and what I still dont get is how the cook remembers everyones orders???

OK You know I have to say I have been with WH for on and off for 15 years. No matter what I always come back. It's like a 2nd home, the atmosphere, employees, and customers are family. I do a little bit of everything at WH. But I do have a small complaint. I speak for alot of salespeople when I say we bust our butts anywhere between 8 to 10 hours and we get ripped off on tips. The way WH figures out our wages its $2.87 a hour and the tips we make are suppose to make up the difference. BUT THEY DON'T.... So I am making a plea to all our FAITHFUL 100% TRUE BLUE CUSTOMERS please please, tip your waitress regardless how much.

I mean for Example Coffee is $1.20 with tax so a $0.50 tip is good.. It's just we all have familys too. And we know that you understand, If I am outta plaace saying this then please tell me I am outta line.

    Thanks
    Angel

Let's start off with saying I love WAFFLE HOUSE...My freshmen year I was at a track meet and saw that Waffle House sponsered the invite so the shirts sold were WAFFLE HOUSE shirts. Of course I had to buy one. Waffle House is that place you can go when its like 3 in the morning just to grab some good breakfast and meet some cool people.....take this story for example.... I had been planning a trip to a local waffle hosue for a while and the day my group of friends and I were planning on attending I got hit by a car. Later that day my friend called mad, asking why I would get hit by a car when we had a trip to WAFFLE HOUSE planned...long story short we rescheduled for today..and it was a great waffle house day. We arrived at the waffle house rediculously excited about being at WAFFLE HOUSE. We got some drinks and I think our waitress was a trainee. Her trainers name was Brenda and Brenda sounded like she smoked at least a pack a day and kind of looked like Al Bundy's wife from Married with Children. Any way we all order and our food was spectacular, aside from the ham in the hash browns, that was a bad plan. We got up put some quaters in the juke box and decided to play the WAFFLE HOUSE music. It was good stuff kind of a doowop sound. Then when the song ended we went up again and Brenda told us she hated the WAFFLE HOUSE music so we didn't play that; but she did tell us how to purchase the WAFFLE HOUSE music so that was the first plus. Then she came over to our table and asked for one of my friends buttons from his wrist. She told us that if we gave her like 5 more soon she would give us like all the waffle house buttons. So there is plus number 2. And finnaly we totaly now own WAFFLE HOUSE coffee mugs. Man I love WAFFLE HOUSE and this trip only set the stage for more WAFFLE HOUSE visits!

    Hi,

I'm searching everywhere for the lyrics to a song called "Waffle House Fire" by a comedian/singer/piano player called "The Reverend Billy C. Wirtz".

I've looked at tons of websites, and if I look any more I think I'm going to get fired.

    Can you help?

BTW, I was a proud employee of the Waffle House for a while, started my "career" in 1977 (i think - it's been a long time)at the WH off the Haywood Lane Exit in Nashville Tennessee, and also did some time at the Harding Place WH. I was a "clean-up boy", and the work was hard and dirty, but I loved working in that place!

My favorite waitress was this who-knows-how-old biker chick, tough as nails, about 5' 2" and probably weighed about 75 pounds, all of it hard as rocks. I think her name was Mary. She never smiled, and she made it plain that she didn't think much of my mother for letting me work in a place like the WH at 14 years old. There were odd times when I got permission to work all night on Fridays and Saturdays because they paid more and I wanted the money. Mary taught me how to drink a cup of coffee with 4 spoons of sugar in it, chasing it with a glass of ice water to stay awake. I think she really liked me, but she'd been so tough for so long that she had a real hard time expressing it.

One night about 3:30 in the morning, I was loading the dishwasher, which was underneath the main counter. The Bunn coffee maker was just immediately behind it and Mary was getting a refill for one of our customers. She forgot I was behind her and in her usual ultra-efficient way, swung around quickly to fill the mug. A fresh scalding-hot pot of coffee went all over my back.

Well, I've never seen anyone change so fast. I yelped, but before I could move she'd made it to the icemaker, got a scoop full of the ice and dumped it down the collar of my shirt, bear-hugged me so I couldn't move, and rubbed the ice all over my back.

The closest thing to tenderness she ever exhibited was after I took my shirt off and rinsed it in the prep sink in the back, she stuck her head through the door and said "I'm sorry, baby." I told her not to worry about it, I was OK, and thanks for the ice. We never spoke about it again. She still didn't smile, but heaven help anyone that messed with me after that. The truckers and tough-guys liked to give us young guys a hard time (in a fairly good-natured way), but one look from Mary if things started to go too far and that was that.

Well, OK, hope that didn't bore you too much. And if you have any leads as to where I can find those lyrics, I'd appreciate it.

    Regards,

    Robert

Hi welcome to the waffle house! There is your official greeting my name is amber i work at waffle house i have for 2 yrs now I'm a grill op. and i love my job. I don't know many people who can be as proud of their job or love there job as much as i do. my whole family works at waffle house. I have 6 brothers and sisters I am the oldest the youngest is 7. my mom is the unit mgr. I'm a grill op my 16 yr old sister is a grill op my 22 yr old sister is a salesperson, my 16 yr old brother is a our waffle boy. he drops waffles hash browns etc. my 20 yr old brother is a grill op and my 12 and 7 yr old sisters can't get enough of the place. they come up after school to sweep mop and help do odd and end things. my son 4 yr old son and 3 yr old nephew come to waffle house to eat or help rack eggs all the time. they love it. the owners of our waffle house are so nice and friendly. we talk on! the phone every day. the customers all know us and love the fact that our whole family is there. well at least one on every shift. As i said before i love my job now i don't know if that's all my waffle house songs brainwashing me or if i really do lol. just joking. it's the only place a family can eat, talk, listen to music and enjoy the ambiance at the same time, and the show isn't that bad either. so thanks for hearing me out. Oh and the omelet trick is to season your pan w/ nonstick coating and let it set on the grill for a few minutes to get it nice and greasy then drain the grease and go on about your omelet flip. it's all in the wrist. a nicely seasoned pan doesn't hurt either.

Have a great day and come back and see us soon!! (a waffle goodbye)

I have the misfortune of living in Connecticut. There is'nt a WH within 500 miles. Last year on a trip to Orlando with my daughters we went to WH every morning for breakfast at first they thought I was nuts when my eye's lit up seeing a WH off the exit to our hotel. After the first morning they were hooked.

I have taken 2 trips south this year, 1 with my wife to PalmBay Fl, I explained we will do whatever she wants, I only have 1 request breakfast at WH.

The second was to Bluffton SC, with my sister. There was no WH in Bluffton but we made the trip to Hardyville on 2 occasions.

I always order the same thing Waffle (light) with bacon or hash browns. Coffee of course.

I guess I'm a southern man trapped in the north. Someone please open a restuarant in Enfield Ct.

    Fred.

Ode to Waffle House (and a discussion of odes in general)

I was stranded off I-77, one of those lonely crossroads where the interstate crosses a somewhat more prominent county two lane. A very common thing outside the northeast.

I was about two miles out if town, and not much of a town at that, Statesville, North Carolina population 23,846. The only things there were a couple of budget motels, a GMC Truck dealership and a Waffle House.

I love Waffle House, it's one of my foremost guilty pleasures! Anytime I travel in the south, I have my eyes peeled for that bright yellow sign. It's the first place heading south from Philly where you can get real, non-instant grits, and where else can you get Steak & Eggs with juice and coffee for a measly six bucks?

    MMMMM Steak & Eggs.

Most Waffle Houses (Waffle Housi) have personality, but the one in Statesville was oozing with the stuff. Open 24 hours, there is always at least one customer who knows everyone in the place, and who loudly converses with all of them, often about matters best kept private. There was a sign with a .357 Magnum circled in red with a line through it, I guess it's the international anti-domestic violence symbol.

Bradford the Manager who was usually the waiter and/or the cook was there every time I came in, and I went there a lot. I wouldn’t call him a happy fellow, but he was polite enough and seemed resigned to his place as the Waffleman, dispensing waffley wonderfulness to his fellow mountain folk.

When I really like a place or a thing, I say to myself, “Self, You should write a poem about this place or thing,” but not just any poem, no no, an ode. I believe an ode is the best way to show your affection or fascination with any said place or thing.

Problem is I have no idea what an ode is, so I figured I'd do a little research. OK, very little research.

I illegally downloaded a Bobbi Gentry song from my childhood called “An Ode to Billy Joe,” hey it's an ode. It goes something like, “La la la … When Billy Joe McAlister jumped off the Tallahatchie bridge…” and what a disturbing piece of childhood nostalgia it was!

I looked up The Tallahatchie Bridge on Google and it was none too impressive, but I digress.

Though my ode research was cut short when Billy Joe McAlister and his bridge jumping depressed the shit out of me, but to me an ode should go something like this:

    Ode to Waffle House

O’ Waffle House, O’ Waffle House How I love thee Faithfully at every crossroads south of DC Your grease and your charm fill me with glee As you old lady waitress fill me with grits and coff-ee

When I’m far from home you are a welcomed site Oh How your big yellow sign brightens the night O’ Waffle House, O Waffle House To you this I say Shine On, Shine On Lo’ till judgment day

I should be put in a straight jacket.

My husband and I were raised on Waffle House, and now it's our kid's favorite place to eat! We knew that our obsession had gone overboard when our oldest daughter asked if she could be a Waffle House waitress for Halloween! We thought it was a really cute idea, however we can't seem to find a uniform anywhere. We've found some cute odds and ends on Ebay, but no clothing. Does anyone out there know where we could find a Waffle House waitress uniform?

    Thanks!

Let me explain to you a little about our Waffle House... it is not just a restaurant, its a lifestyle.. hell we have so much drama within it that we have our own Soap Opera, lovingly called "As the Waffle Burns".

But, there is much love there... and we have pictures, and even a video collage of the past 5 years since our original group started to socialize there. Once we have the webpage up, I'll be more than happy to share it with you.

My Father and I recently made a visit to the Waffle House in Clearwater located on Ulmerton Road accross from a Cracker Barrel. Waffle House is an old favorite of mine and I suggested we have our breakfast at the Waffle house. We were greeted not as strangers, but as friends. The Man at the grill saw that we looked a little lost and he pointed to a booth and said " we've got a booth already for you." The wait staff in the galley way hustled our meal and our service person never let my coffee get cold or empty. My Dad mentioned his omelet was better than he could make. He called the server over and said he had one complaint to the cook. The cook came over very friendly, but a look of concern on his face. My Dad told him he was mad because his omelet at the waffle house was better than he could make at home. Then the cook at a free minute taught Dad how to make the proper omelet. He told him about how they mix the eggs with a hand plender. Us a heavy gauge steel omelet pan only used for omelets. Put about 2 tablespoons of wesson oil and heat the pan. When lines appear in the oil you throw in the eggs and you swirl them with hand movement. It creates the fluffy rolled like omelet. You put your extras in an roll it in the pan over and let it warm through to finish cooking. He made it look so easy. My Dad is 73 and a recent widower. He was so touched by the cook's actions. I was impressed at his skill and his enthusiasm and pride in his job. What ambassadors they are for the company. If you work for Waffle House you have some fellow workers in Florida you can be proud of that is for sure. In my youth as a struggling young Broadcast Production staffer I remembered fondly eating a good hearty wholesome meal at the local Waffle House in Tampa. The production staff didn't make much money and we could always get a meal we could afford. I was so glad to see nothing has changed at the waffle house. I wish they would consider selling mugs, paper hats, copies of the menu, pins, hats and t-shirts to help market themselves better. They should consider some TV ads to remind people they are still around. The waffles and hash browns are great. And the steak meal is a deal.

I live in New Orleans right now and there is not a waffle house within 20 miles. If anyone were to build a waffle house closer to the big easy it would be a great investment. Look at it in this equation Drunk People + Delicious Waffle House 24/7 = Satisfied customers and $$$$. Anyway I am originally from Tampa, FL and we had the greatets Waffle House in the U.S.A. It was sooo good that we gave it its own nickname the WA - HO. This was b/c the FFLE and the USE were burnt out for a least 5 years and may still be. Let me know if they are. Its off of I-275 on the fletcher exit.

Can anyone out there tell me how to cook an omlette like at the waffle house? I am pretty close, but i think i'm messing up the oil or something. What kind of oil does one use? Can you just tell me the whole process? I promise I'll still come in for an original one now and then, LOL!!!

P.S. I know the cheese is probably W.H. proprietary, but it seems that everything else can be done at home.

    Thanks!!!

    Responses from our readers:

um anyone with eggs a whisk and oil can make an omelet and special waffle house pan and an aerator is not necessary i make them at home all the time i work at 686 in snellville which it right outside of Atlanta so i know how to make an omelet. there not a waffle house speciality

    -- ---Raymond

This is in response to the person wanting to know how to make the omlets at home....I work for Waffle House in Arkansas....so I know how it's done. You really can't do it at home unless you have an aerator and a very well seasoned stainless steel "omlet" pan....only available through Waffle House....So, really you are out of luck...but I am sure that your local Waffle House will never get tired of making them for you! You should really try the Fiesta Omelet if you enjoy the spicier side of life....Good Day and Good Eating!

    Melanie......

The key to making a nice omlet is getting the oil the right temp. (the oil is wesson lo-melt) to make sure the oil is the right temp simply put the oil in the omlet pan on a burner and put a little drop of egg white in the oil when the egg floats to the top of the oil its ready. But be fast otherwise your omlet will burn.

Just stumbled on this website and love it...I am very forturnate to have 2 (yes 2) Waffle Houses in my small town in East Texas near Shreveport...One is about 4 miles from me on I 20 and a new one in town!!! My husband and I went to Lowe's Motor Speedway for a The Nextel Cup Coca Cola 600 last summer. I am a Bobby Labonte fan... We drove a one ton duelly with a bumper pull old Shasta Rv. Our trip on I 20 from East Texas to North Carolina was a treat due to all the Waffle Houses on the Interstate....Every morning, no matter what state we were in, we ate breakfast at a Waffle House!! I love the coffee and pecan waffles! My husbands and I had our first date in 1978 at a Waffle House in Dallas, Texas. So, since we are still married, this proves that Waffle House romances do last! I would love to have a Waffle House coffee mug, new or old...any one with information on how to obtain one? Will they sell one at the Waffle Houses? Gotta have one! Thanks in advance for any info on the coffee mug and allowing me to write my Waffle House testimonial...

    Sincerely,
    Barbara

Maybe you can help me? There are no Waffle Houses around here and I like their coffee. Do you know what kind they use, or how I can buy it. When I travel, they won't sell it to me.

    Thanks,

Looking for Interesting Waffle House Stories for Publication

I am currently at work on a book about diners in the South in general and the Waffle House in particular, and am looking for exciting, uplifting or otherwise interesting Waffle House stories -- POSITIVE stories -- from both employees and customers, relating personal experiences at the Waffle House. Please email your story (or, if you prefer, just a brief synopsis of your story) to: tsisk@mindspring.com. I'll then be following up on the best of the stories.

Hi everyone from Aiken SC Unit #3,

This site is so cool! I met my husband at the Waffle House. He was the manager and my boss. We quickly fell in love and... I have two kids and we have been together 8 wonderful years. Although I did not work there very long my husband is still managing it. He is a great manager and boss, THE BEST as a matter of fact! I still love the WH and in my 8 years of eating it A LOT, I have not burned out on it nor the coffee or great service. Waffle House is great!

To my husband Jay and all of the wonderful Waffle Houses out there!

P.S. Although we did not get married at the WH I came close to having my first daughter there. I could not get enough of their good food and the cravings hit at all hours! Third shift ambulance and police customers would often tell me that if they had to deliver my child at he WH I would have to name her after them!

    Hey,

I stumbled onto your website today. I think it's great, and it seems as if we both had the same kind of idea. Check out my website sometime if you'd like to read about my adventures at Waffle House. www.wafflehousediaries.com.

I'm sitll working on adding new pages to the site, but you can go ahead and see the direction that it's taking. I plan to add a lot more and make into a kind of community.

    Hey!

I work at one of the 2 Waffle Houses in Frederick, Maryland. I have been working there for about 8 months and I Love it there! I can do all of the work there except the main grilling. Its so much fun to work there. The people I work with are so awesome and I like everyone there. The regulars there are so cool and they are treated like family there. Its awesome to see all the people every weekend who want to come in and eat our delicious food. I hate it when people laugh when I say I work at Waffle House, they think its some trashy place. Well, its definitely not. We have a very clean place and very nice atmosphere. I don’t think I could imagine working anywhere else!

PS. Waffle House is most definitely better than Denny's. Denny's is gross as hell.

I recently visited 6 WHs in 5 states in 2 days which I am sure is no record … I wonder are their any records ???

I would add to Elaine’s tirade about tipping … to those who stay a couple of hours and drink coffee .. .. you think a quarter is 25% is ok… get real guys… think a quarter each fill that’s more like it.

I have to say with some sadness that my wife and I came home to England on the 1st of November after staying in St Petes Beach for 2 weeks Holiday. We flew into Tampa late on a Sunday and went to bed fairly late. Monday morning we were up to find the local Waffle House, we had sampled their food four years previous and went back every time we came to America. I don't drink coffee at home but cannot resist the coffee there ( three cups at least).

On this visit we had a long wait, we said we're on vacation we don't mind, in spite of this we were given 'extras' as an apology. If we were treated like this at home we would be shocked, in the USA it seems to be the norm. I would reccomend Waffle House to everybody, Good Service, Great Food and thanks to the friendly staff GOOD FUN!

I have worked at the Waffle House in Columbia, Mo. for about 2 years now it has its ups and downs like any job but I dont think I would have as much fun working anywhere else there is always something going on. My boss Mark Range is the best boss ive ever had! And yes I still eat there even on my days off you can never get tired of the Waffle House.

    Thanks

I've been working for Waffle House for 2 years and it is a great job. Like any job it has its good days and bad days. I am a salesperson and a grill operator. I enjoy both positions. I enjoy cooking what people order and they get to watch me cook it. Everyone who comes in to W.H. for the first few times are amazed that we can remember the order without looking at it. It's really not that hard! I also enjoy waiting tables because I get the chance to meet and talk to the customers (which I really can't do when I'm cooking) and I can give them a pleasant experience while they are here. It gives me such a good feeling to know that they will hopefully be satisfied with the service I have given them. When you take your job as seriously as I do knowing that the customer is the main priority, making their day with great service. I've seen a lot of managers that don't take their job as serious as they should and don't really care when their employees come to them about other employees not doing their jobs. Usually nothing is done about it, which isn't fair to the employees who do their job. It makes them do double the work for them. Most of the managers don't care cause they don't have to pick up the slack for someone else that's lazy. Even if the manager knows that they are not a good employee they don't get rid of them like they should, cause it's too much for them to find someone else and why would they when they can get the rest of the team to do the work that isn't being done. At Waffle House it's supposed to be all about teamwork. When you have teamwork, everyone's job is easier. That is what makes your Waffle House a place that people will want to come back to! One day I would like to become a manager so I could run it the way that is the right way. The Waffle House way! So when people come into that Waffle House they will leave with a smile on their face cause they enjoyed everything about their stop into Waffle House and will want to come back again. To all the Waffle House employees, take pride in your job so that America's Place to Eat will stay America's most favorite place to eat!!!!!!!

I live in Lawrenceville, Ga and I love Waffle House. Waffle House is the best. My family eats there probably about 3 thimes every 2 weeks. Well my personal favorite is the All Star because you get everything. Well I think there should be more Waffle Houses. Well every time I have a basketball tournament my friends and I go to Waffle house before the game becuase it is our good luck meal!!

    Love,
    The Waffle House Queen

    Good Day,

I wish to reach the Human Resource headquarters for Waffle House. I just have to tell them what a wonderful gal they have in store #1086 and the cook was truly wonderful.

This little gal's name was Nat. There was no last name on her name badge but she was every waitress should be. Alert, attentive, sweet and polite. Her warm smile and sunny personality was a welcome after traveling four hundred miles and feeling just beat. I really wish every stop was a nice as she made this one for us. Please give her a pat on the back. Not enough waitresses get this and they need it. The pay scale is not high enough to show them that they do make a difference to people like my husband and I.

Also, your cook (Robert Shaw) was truly concerned with the quality of our meal. And it was perfect. Being a woman I know haw hard it can be to get those over easy eggs to really be over easy and look great too. Mine seem to look good or taste good but seldom both at once! Anyway, I think these people need to know that folks like us really do appreciate the extra effort they put into being super employees instead of just employees.

These folks have won our hearts over. You should be very proud of them that they make this kind of difference to people they may never see again but treat like they are some of their best friends.

Please let us know that this does in fact get to Waffle house Employee Rep?

    Our sincere thanks,
    Dave and Lauren Robinson

    Hi,

I'm from Australia. Whilst I was visiting my friend who at that time lived in Decatur, she took me to eat at a Waffle House which I believe was the first store opened. (Or was it on the site of the first store that opened ?) Anyway, the service was fast, the food good, and the atmosphere quite unlike anything that I have ever experienced.

I can honestly say that we do not have a restaurant in Australia that is anywhere near as unique as the Waffle House, an experience I will never forget.

    Tracey.

Hi. I don't have one particular story about Waffle House except that I happened upon this website because I was trying to look up locations of Waffle House Restaurants within driving distance of Chicago. My daughter is on her way to a conference in Chicago and whenever she gets South enough to go to a Waffle House she will drive up to 3 or 4 hours out of her way to visit one. Then of course she has to bring back enough pecan waffles for everyone in the family.

We have been visiting Waffle Houses for the past 12 years. We discovered them on our once a year vacations to Florida. We love Waffle House. It became a tradition that the first one to spot a Waffle House had to sing "Waffle House, Waffle House, Waffle House". Of course we would love to own one, but I don't know if that would ever be a possibility. Anyways, great to know there are other families that are as kooky about it as we are.

    Thanks

I work at Waffle House. It's an alright place to work, but it's really quirky about stupid little things. I met Bert, and he's an okay guy, but I don't understand people treating him like he's a celebrity. I mean, he won a chili contest. And you KNOW that the chili he made couldn't be the same stuff that we serve at Waffle House.

We don't get any famous people, but I love my customers. I try to talk to all of them, because a lot of the people that come in there have stories like you wouldn't beleive. I'm pretty sure we're supposed to kick customers out after awhile but I don't. I just ask them to be quieter if they're being loud. We do kick out drunk people that make a scene though. That's understandable.

I think it is so cool that there are people out there who really get touched and are forever a fan of the Waffle House after just one good visit. I have worked at waffle house for 17 years and I never realized how much people who are just "passing through" are impressed with our business and how we affect them. I mean I know our "regulars that are in there everyday care about us but it's really nice to know that you leave an impact on people and they will tell people hundreds or even thousands of miles away about their experience at the waffle house. I love it. It's a way of life for me. I grew up at waffle house as an employee and at 33 have spent half of my life there. Thanks for you support.

    Sincerely

I am from Washington State. One of my hobbies is Civil War reenacting. A friend of mine and I flew down to Tennessee last November to take part in an event at Lookout Mountain, near Chattanooga. Of course, everywhere we went, we saw the signs for WAFFLE HOUSE. Finally, on the way back towards Nashville, we stopped at a WAFFLE HOUSE (it must be in all caps BTW- just like the sign) near McMinnville, TN. We fell in love with it!!! After that we stopped the next two mornings before having to fly back to the Northwest. My favorites are the pecan waffles- they are great and you can't get them anywhere else, as far as I can see....

Fast forward to last month- April 2004. I flew my family down to Charleston, SC for the funeral of the Hunley crew. I told my wife all about WAFFLE HOUSE restaurants and how we HAD to go there. Wouldn't you know it, but there was one right near our hotel and the exit we used to get down to Charleston! It became our official breakfast place. My daughter didn't like the grits, but then none of us grew up eating them, but she ate up everything else. Our flight home was supposed to take off at 6 a.m., so we had to get up very early to leave. Obviously we had to eat. So our last official act in the South was to eat breakfast at 4:30 a.m. at the WAFFLE HOUSE- very fitting, by the way. We expected it to be nearly empty, but when we arrived, there was only one booth open! We were shocked, but then we shouldn't have been.

What is it that draws us? To start with the employees make you feel welcome, and you feel not like a guest, but like you are a member of the family. In Tenn, we sat at the counter, and enjoyed the nonstop banter of the cooks & waitresses as they went about their business. The food is good, cheap and plenty- not gourmet, but who cares? Anyway, all the WAFFLE HOUSEs we went to were great and I am hoping that they will be introduced to the West Coast. However, a part of me would rather not have that happen, since I think they would lose the atmosphere that they have in the South.

    Sincerely,
    W.B. Tharp

Hi! ran across your page on the web. I have an official Waffle House initiation for my friends who are from New Jersey, Califronia and other parts of the country where there are, sadly, no Waffle Houses.

You have to go at 2am or it doesn't count and you have to order grits, or it doesn't count. It's a favorite eatery for us musicians, who are always lookign for food at 2am.

I wrote a song about Waffle house called "The Guy who changes the Light Bulbs"- it's about how there always seems to be at least one bulb burned out on each sign, speelling things like "Waffle Use" and "Waffle Ho!"

I even made up some Waffle ho buttons.

Glad to hear all the good reports on Waffle House and I love to eat at them also but have worked for Company and Franchise both and didn't believe some ex coworkers when they told me to not turn my back for them to put the knife in until recently. Worked for them almost 14 years just to get frustrated enough after not having the management team resolve some issues that were ongoing for almost a year and a half. Sucks big time but still love to frequent them and love Bert Thorton and Joe Anchors dearly.

Ex Affle Waffler but loving the Waffle House

My Sister and I were returning from a trip and stopped at a Waffle House located off exit #55 of I-40, North Carolina. (Waffle House, 1444 Tunnel Road, Asheville, NC) What a great experience we had.

We waited just a few minutes for a table, as did a lot of other people. It was WELL worth the wait. Not only was the food "Waffle House Good," and the restaurant was clean. But most of all the staff was so friendly and were so happy to be working together. They treated each other and the visitors like family. I wish everyone could treat their fellow man like these people do. We stayed a lot longer than we had planned due to enjoying the staff so much.

By the way, ALL the staff were seniors like ourselves, there were two ladies working there that may not have been seniors but they had slight disabilities which did not impede their service in any way.

We went in the restaurant tired, hungry and in a hurry. We left there rested, full and very appreciative of being who we were and that we had such a wonderful opportunity to be around people like these.

Thank you so much for having such a great environment for us to visit. It truly was just like going home and visiting with family. These folks are great.

My friend Brian and I went to the Waffle House in Harrisonburg, VA this past weekend. It has been a long night, and we had been drinking earlier. Some friends of our got in a fight and we couldnt get to sleep even though it was almost 6am. We really needed to get away for a bit and fill our stomach's. Fortunately, the waffle house was open. We are both extremely grateful for the friendly service we received and the hashbrowns were unbelievably good. Thank to the Waffle House we were finally able to fall into a deep slumber and get some rest before the long day we had ahead of us.

I used to work at Waffle House in Tennessee, I got to meet Jim Shaub, the guy that signs the WH employees checks, WH is like its own type of place, its not a meal, it's an experience.

    ATTN NORTH GA:

I am Kristal Lucas, district manager in North Georgia. I have been with Waffle House for almost 8 years. I started when I was 16 as a salesperson. I loved working at the Waffle House for many reasons: excellent pay, fun atmosphere, great managers, etc. However, the number one reason... the awesome customers. We treat them like family;therefore, they 'become' family. The high bar crew practically raised me. I graduated from Pickens High and was moving on to college on a scholarship from Mercer. ( i would have studied medicine.) Insted, I chose Waffle House. Why? Why? Why? I entered the mgt. training program and several months later... began managing Unit 936 in Jasper Ga. I was barely 19! 2 years later and alot of hard work... I was promoted to district manager. I am now over 3 stores. I am only 23, but have had a lifetime of experiences! I have the best customers in the world! Some of my employees have been with us all of their working lives... just like me! Not to brag, but I have excellent benefits, profit sharing, and make what most doctors make... AFTER 8 years of schooling. I mean no disrespect to those in the medical field. This, however, speaks volumes for my frachise, COLLIS FOODS... now known as LOOK OUT WAFFLES.. I live a wonderful Waffle life. If there is anyone in North Georgia that is seeking a career in rest. mgt..... please call Jasper, Ga Waffle House at (706)- 692-6657. OR.... visit colliscareers.com. P.S. Thanks for all of your waffle stories! It's people like you that makes us want to work weekends, holidays, doubles, etc.....!!!!

Hello, I have worked for Waffle House since I was 13 years old!! I have had a lot of fond memories from this place. I happen to work for the MOST BUSY store in the country, don't let the other people fool you about how they work for the most busy store!! I work for Unit 502 Covington Ky, We do record breaking sales every year!! My store did the most sales on Christmas Day than any other this year (12-25-03).

I have a lot of stories I could tell you. I really enjoy working for Waffle House, I get paid very well. Always somthing to talk about their rather it be a rude customer or a what famous person just came in, etc etc. I have worked all the shifts for Waffle House, normally third shift (with the drunks) I read some of the stories on your site from peoples expriences, some were happy some were not. Now keep in mind working as a waitress or a cook is a VERY hard job. We haft to deal with all kinds of stupid stuff all night!! Just to give a few pointers on some peoples stories... The two guys that walked out of there coffee bill. Just because you had terrible service does not give you the right to not pay for the items that you received (needless to say you did drink the coffee) But here in the US Police Officers will make you pay for check, cause walkin out on your bill is the same as stealing!!

For the group of people staying in at the Waffle House over an hour without ordering anything. This is a biss. not a park to hang out in. And yes it is one of our many rules at Waffle House.

One lady asked about why do they not "lock" the doors after a robbery or what not. Well Almost all Waffle House do not have locks on their doors. We have had to shut ours down a few times, we had to get chains to lock our doors!!

But I do not want to sound mean about any of my statements, people just do not understand what we go through everyday!! The one thing I love about Waffle House is you would be amazed how many famous people come in the one I work at. I' ve met Nelly,Juvenile,BG,Stone Cold Steve Austin,China,Test,Buff Bagwell,Goldberg,Forrest Witacur,DMX,Randy Moss. Now my favorite of all is my boys The Cincinnati Bengals (they love coming to see me an two other cooks) they come in all the time such as Chad Johnson, Peter Warrick, Mark Roman, Rich Braham, Bradon Bennet, an Steve Foley.. I get to meet all kinds of people like this, it's the one thing I love about Waffle House!! But it's a cool to place to work, or eat at. I just ran across this site and I often eat at the WH's in the Newport News/Hampton, VA, area. Here is a story I would like to share: My fiancee lives in Colombia (South America). I met her on the internet, at a "squeaky-clean" site (in case anyone reading this has some distorted and perverted thoughts as to how we met), so there is some hope for the web. Anyway, back to the story. She came to visit me last July. Her flight into Newport News arrived at about 10:30PM. She was hungry and there were very few places open at that time. I took her to the Waffle House in Newport News (on Jefferson Avenue at the intersection with I-64). Obviously, she had never been in a WH. She ordered hash browns, which are not eaten in Colombia, with her meal. She thoroughly enjoyed them and, seven months later, she still talks about them. I seem to remember that I ordered grits for her, too, but they never were brought to our table. Perhaps, time has dulled my memory and I only think I ordered them. Anyway, when she returns this summer to marry me, I am sure we will be eating often at one of the WH's in the area.

Thanks for the site. This "shrine" is very appropriate for an American institution such as the Waffle House.

Hey, I am currently working at a WH, i love it,my best friend works there, and we both work the breakfast shift(6-2),we have so much fun,(i.e.dancing to the jukebox, joking with our regs, and just having a good time) i have met some of the most amazing people there, some from around the world others from next door, your web site is amazing i never thought a WH shrine existed, i was just bored, surfing one day and found you,so heres my invite; next time anyone is in MORRISTOWN TENNESSEE and your bored(which is a good chance you are) come stop by the WEST end store(i'll go ahead and warn you the east end isn't as friendly) and enjoy a waffle and some coffee or orange juice, ask for me(i.e. blondie or wiggles) and i can guarantee you a good breakfast and a good time. Bye and have a WAFFLE GREAT DAY!!

Heya My name is Jeannie, i am a Waffle House waitress and proud of it. i am an ohio resident and native which makes it that much more fun. I first came upon waffle house in Covington Ga where my daddys friend diana worked. From that day until March of my senior year everyone told me i was going to be a Waffle House waitress for life.

Little did i know it would be one of the most crucial experiences of my life. March of 01 i became a 3rd shifter at Unit #1091 in Conyers Ga under Vicki and Sue. My prom date Mike has already been here so i've seen. I fell in love with Waffle House. In aug of that year, with much sadness i came back north only to find Unit 1467 in Perrysburg, Ohio, where i met my mother in law and husband. Deb was a 3rd grill op and sales person, and her sexy son came in to visit her and that was the beginning of my married life. Although we didn't get married til July of the next year. i have Waffle House to thank for sending me the man of my dreams. i've been rehired at both stores twice, my husband works for Waffle House. Up here in Ohio we had a visit from corporate Tuesday Feb 10, They sent Carl Edwards who just so happened to know all my friends from 1091. THANK YOU WAFFLE HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I personally try to keep Waffle House alive. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL WAFFLE SLINGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Waffle House Saved my Life

I wish I were kidding about this.

Yesterday morning I was on my way back to Boston from Greenville SC. My wife and I decided to stop for breakfast and since I love Waffle House we drove up I85 until we found one just outside of Charlotte,NC. We stopped and had the GREAT waffles and eggs and bacon and grits, etc and because it was soooo good we lingered over it a while longer than usual.

When we left and tried to turn left out of the parking lot toward I85 a steady stream of traffic prevented us from doing so. I decided to take a right and maybe make a U turn down the road. Couldn’t do it, too much traffic. I spotted a sign for 85 at the next corner and went left and followed the signs as they came up(never having been there before). We kept seeing signs pointing to I85 North that were pointing in two directions at once. After seeing the same thing three times, I decided to try and find I85 SOUTH and go to the next exit and turn around. We did. All of this put our trip back about 45 minutes to an hour(which on a long trip is a problem).

About 7 hours later when we were coming up I95 in Maryland, we were told 95 was closed because of a huge accident in which a tanker crashed and exploded from the road above 95, killing 4 people.

I calculated that if we had not stopped for breakfast we would likely have been in the general area of the disaster. And if Waffle House was not so good we might have just left sooner.

Maybe some angels were at work as well?.??????

    Thank you,
    Richard Meredith

I can't decide whether I should be writing this or not. It's a terrible British dilemma because on one part, I'm rather embarrassed to admit such a thing, but on the other, I suspect there may be some other barmy lads or lasses out there with a similar proclivity.

A number of years ago I was on holiday driving from Miami to the mountains in Virginia. I foolishly thought I could drive all night, being an idiot about your highway system, what I thought to be a short distance. Yes, I was an idiot and in the wee hours of the morning I made my first visit to a Waffle House.

Eclectic would be an understatement in describing the characters that awaited me and I must admit that I probably only added to the diversity. Everyone was chaty and friendly in only a way that I now understand Southern Americans can be.

Without being too verbose here, I'll briefen my epistle. This girl-I can't call her striking, or beautiful, or any adjective such as this, but she was cute-extremely, began talking to me and for some reson her friendliness transcended anything that I should imagine would be in the customer service manual. In any event, this precious girl asked me to "hang around." She invited me to see where she lived. I was willing in an innocent way because I was natuarally curious as to how Americans lived and what a hoe environment was like. I honestly thought she was going to introduce me to her parents perhaps or brothers and sisters- I had no pre-conceived ideas.

I followed her along a country road, not too far, to a single (I'm sorry, I don't know the word) trailer type home. It was set admist a field and a single tree. The girl invited me in. She had a dog and a cat and the trailer was neat and tidy. She made tea for me. She didn't ask if I wanted coffee and just assumed I wanted tea, which I thought was sweet and she apologised because she had no lemons. I explained that we don't use lemons and I preferred milk. She smiled and touched my shoulder as she sat the cup on the table in front of me. She excused herself saying she wanted to change from the jeans she had been wearing coming from the Waffle House. When she came back she had an overly large grey sweatshirt on. It was so large it hung to about her thigh. As best I could tell, other than some white socks, she had nothing else on. I assumed she probably had on some shorts beneath them. It was September and the air was still gentle and warm which I figure is always this way in Florida. She sat at the table for a few seconds then asked me to sit on the sofa. I sat down and she sat beside me. She turned on the television and turned the telly to a news station.

As I took the last bit of tea and set the cup down the girl leaned over to me, wrapped her arm around me neck, pushing me back on the sofa and began to kiss me. I don't think I've ever had such lip movement since my electric toothbrush shorted out!

I was ..well...overcome..by her friendliness and cheerfully responded in kind. Several hours later I was looking out across the fields wondering whether I realllly wanted to travel to the mountains as I was content to remain here eating waffles. (No, you perve, that was NOT her name! I meant going back to the waffle house!)

She asked me what my plans were and I told her. She told me she had to return to work at 3, as I recall. I felt sorry for her because she had already worked the entire night and I think the two of us perhaps slept for an hour or so...I can't recall.

She told me I was welcome to stay. As much as I wanted to- I professed regrets and told her that I must be moving on. I stayed with her until she had to return to work. We had some intense visiting and then it was time to go. I went back to the waffle house and wistfully pondered on staying as I watched her skilfully scramble some eggs. There is an amazing gyration in a petite girl scrambling eggs. :-)

But I (albeit stupidly) bid my farewells and left, heading on up north. I drove for many many hours, smiling along the way, and even singing to the radio. I arrived across the border into Tennessee and saw the warm yellow lights of another Waffle House. I pulled in and decided to eat.

And as I sat down at the counter, there was this raven haired girl scrambling eggs. She dished them up, handed them to the lone customer at the other end of the counter, turned to me and smiled "Welcome to the Waffle House". The moment I ordered my meal, she began asking me questions. "Whar y'all frum" and "you're so cute, you talk reeel funny."

And I slowly told her, of my first experience of dining at a Waffle House the previous day and how "friendly" the staff were there and pretty the girls were. She asked me which one it was and all of a sudden, I realised I had absolutely no idea whatsoever where it was I had stopped, what town, what village, what highway exit, and I had not even asked the girl down the road for her address....What a cad I am, I thought to myself!

But I snapped out of my self-denigration as the girl looked at me and said, with a twinkle in her eye " Us Tennessee girls are MUCH friendlier than the girls from Florida!" And with hand on heart, I stayed at the Tennesse border for four days, visiting the mountain range, some underground lake, an old railway station, and all the while, I filled up on a warm, sweet, and friendly southern hospitality experience of eating waffles!

And now, everytime I come to America, I intentionally seek out the best waffle I can find at Waffle houses. Sometimes it's a miss, other times, it is a resounding success. But as long as I receive that traditional salutatory invocaction of "Y'all come back now, y'hear?" I know I will always be welcome at the local Waffle House..and who knows...perhaps I'll find my first Waffel House again.

    Best Regards

I have to say that I have always been an avid lover of Waffle House, but I'm not so sure anymore. Maybe my questions can be answered. Tonight my friends and I were enjoying a good time at the new local Waffle House. Now, this Waffle House is one of the only two 24 hour restaurants in our small town. We sat down, and at first we didn't order anything. Then we felt bad and ordered some drinks. We were laughing, having a good time, but kept to ourselves. There weren't many other people in the restauraunt, so we thought it would be okay to hang around. We were playing music in the world famous juke box, talking of fun times. We decided we were going to order some food, but then the waitress came over and told us that we had to get out. We weren't asked to leave, we were told to leave. Not to mention the waitress was very rude to us. She said that the manager wanted us out and we had been there since 8:30. It was only 9:45 when she told us this. So we left without a fuss, not being the confrontational kind. But we were curious as to why were kicked out, so my friend went in and asked. The manager told him that it was tradition to kick out customers after an hour. When he came back out the manager was mocking him and making fun of him. Now, I know Waffle House has House Rules, but where does it say that they are allowed to be rude to the customers? None the less their small town target audience customers? Is this a Waffle House Tradition to kick people out if they aren't spending enough money? Is rude service ok? It's too bad, because this Waffle House in a small town pissed off the editor of the high school newspaper, and writers of the two local newspapers, all hungry to pick up an interesting story. The high school is the biggest part of this town, and the kids not going to this Waffle House could easily put it out of business. I still love Waffle House, but not if they treat people like this.

    Sincerely,
I've Got Your Tradition Right Here

I actually have quite a few funny and all true stories of the waffle house but I don't know what you are asking for. My husband and I went there on a regular basis ( at least four times a week for two years) and we have had and seen many an adventure. Waffle House and it's staff has given us a home away from home and we hope to win a lottery so we may open our own franchise here in New Mexico. Please contact me if you are at all interested in a few cute stories, if not, have a wonderful day and make sure the next time you go in you try a double order of hashbrowns( now you need more like a triple order) smothered, scattered, chunked, topped, diced, and peppered, ten times covered and double the chillie. Make sure to get it on one plate and try it at least once with and without the jalepenos. Smiles and best wishes all around.

    Hi there!

My hubby and I are originally from Kentucky but have been in San Antonio for several months (he is training at Randolph airforce base) and are starting to have WH withdrawls. There are none even remotely close by! We have a 1 year old and can only manage about an hour drive in any direction but still we have not been able to get our waffle house fix! Please pray that we do not go completely nuts without our scattered smothered and covered hash browns (IHOP does TERRIBLE hash browns). If you know anyone wanting to start one send them down this way!

    Bye,
    Donna Clements

Just wanted to let you know, I will be opening my first WH in Concord Twp., Ohio (eastern suburb of Cleveland) early next year. Check out my web site at www.baldwinwaffles.com.

I am a former manager of a WH in South Georgia. I want to tell you how addicted to this chain I am! And I join a huge clientele of WH patrons who like nothing better than the excitement of a good shift change, the jukebox after along night of partying, and the offer of one more cup of coffee. I worked for them as a manager for about 8 months, and I am telling you that was the hardest job I ever had! The constant turn over of staff, and the constant hours were too much for me. The money was great, and the fringe benefit of being able to work somewhere you would rather be than at home, was wonderful, but I could not take the 24 business. This unit was located on 75 so constantly busy. But, I learned more there than during college about people, and attitudes, and diversity. It was definitely an experience. And.....when you get down on yourself and the whole world seems to be crumbling beneath you, stop by your local WH, there is always someone in there way worse off then yourself! Makes you appreciate what you have..... Good luck to you all, and keep the "yellow sign burning"!!!

just wanted to reply to north lake food soon to be maniger that I was a corp maniger for waffle in ga and all lock can be locked from the inside thier is no key becouse it is a richel to throw the key into the parking lot then pave over it and the only other place thier is a key is at corp office . and little just a litte helper for you always keep one copy of everything you do just in case something goes wrong you have a backer for your self ...

If the Frederick, MD Mayor and Board of Aldermen decide to lengthen the runway at Frederick Municipal Airport, the Waffle House just off I-70 may have to be torn down. Owner Kamran Medgalchi says this is one of WH's most successful locations. He gets business from as far away as Pittsburgh.

hey....i am a waffle house waitress, and cook, and i was trippin' on your site. Unfortunately, Jan 2, i start school at Penn State, and they don't have Waffle House in University Park, PA!!!! Guess I will have to visit your site when i feel homesick!

Hey, there was a guy who said the waffle houses that were owned by northlake foods were never locked. I work in a northlake foods waffle house, often on nightshift, and I can personally attest to two times that we locked our doors. I know, because I did it. The first time was about 18 months ago when I was robbed at gunpoint. My cook got petrified and left, so I locked the door until the sherriffs' dept showed up about 30 minutes later. The second time was about 3 weeks ago, when the septic overflowed and we had running waste all through the restaraunt. At this point, I called the district manager, and made a command decision not to adversly affect the health of patrons, and we locked the doors until we could get a sump-pump from covington, and get all the waste off the floors. So, as you can see, not all the locks are free-turning, but they are only locked under the most dire of circumstances.

    Sincerely,
    Christina In Lexington

LOYAL PATRON LEAVES LAST VISIT SMOTHERED WITH LOVE

Friends and family of Lawrence ''Tuna'' Clark gather in the parking lot of a Waffle House on U.S. Highway 129 at Interstate 85 in Jackson County for a Thursday memorial service. Clark's ashes, a portrait and flowers were placed on the hood of a car in his favorite parking space. Lawrence ''Tuna'' Clark called the Waffle House on U.S. Highway 129 his ''office,'' ate there at least once a day for years and earned the love of dozens of employees who gathered in the parking lot outside the restaurant Thursday for his funeral.

The staff knew how he took his coffee; they knew his favorite seat; and they knew they could depend on him if they needed a ride to work. They called him ''the Waffle House taxi service,'' and many credited the Jefferson man with keeping them employed when engine troubles meant they didn't have transportation to work.

Recently my sister-in-law and I went to the Waffle House in Denham Springs, Louisiana. Our waitress took our order for beverages, served them and walked around our table and noticed there was chili on the floor under our table. So we moved to a table across the room so the chili could be cleaned up and got a different waitress. The waitress we got said, "I see y'all decided to vacate." I said, "yes, somebody had an incident with chili over there." I didn't tell her I'm 4 months pregnant and the sight of that chili on the floor made me want to vomit, but that's a different story. Anyway, she then said rather rudely, "Are y'all going to eat anything?" So we ordered and she asked with an attitude, "Is that it?" She wasn't even the one who served us our food when it was ready, she was out smoking. Then when she came to give us our check she asked, again, very rudely, "Are you going to eat your bacon?" Getting an attitude because apparently I was wasting food. Needless to say, she got no tip from us. And the butter wasn't even melted on my toast!

    Stephanie Bramlet

P.S. I usually love Waffle House but her attitude and the cold toast just really sucked. I will go to Waffle House again, but not the one in Denham Springs.

On my son's 4th birthday he was given a choice of where he wanted to eat. He chose the Waffle House! We were shopping in Winchester, Virginia and stopped in. We had a blast! The two employees made his 4th birthday very memorable! He got a hat and they played songs the entire time! We will never forget this birthday experience. A big thanks goes out to the Winchester, Virginia Waffle House!

My friend and i made an hour trek from my house in South NJ to the Elkton, MD waffle House for the fun of it. Why? I hadnt been there in 2 years and no place in Central NJ where I am from and South NJ where I live come close. Something about it, I dunno, maybe cuz I could get steak, eggs, texas toast, and hash browns smothered, covered, chopped, chunked, and scattered and still have money to pay the tolls on the way back. Theres a great sory on my web page about calling my friend while he was in one at South carolina and the waitress grabbed the phone from him. She told me not to bother him, he was eating....more on that here. So that same friend and I made the trip and ate so much they had to rename it the waddle house. It's worth the trip!

    Waffle House Employee Appreciation 101
I am a weekend customer at a local Waffle House in Selma, Alabama, where, everyone else who is out at that hour decide to venture. There are all kinds there, “the night-lifers? as I call them. Those who enjoy the local bars, those who work the late shifts, and those who just happen to want some breakfast at two or three o’clock in the morning, we're usually a good crowd - you know who you are.

Empathy ?Identification with or understanding thethoughts and feelings of others. This is a word and definition I’d like to share with some people ?you know who you are.

This past weekend the place was packed, barely enough room for everyone to sit. There were only five people behind the counter. Three of which were cooking, while the other two were running around trying to take and give orders. People were starting to get loud and obnoxious. It was pathetic. There were a lot of loud comments made, some more hurtful than others - you know who you are.

As Paul Jones wrote, “Waiting tables IS a job. The waiter is not there to be your buddy, your fan or your serf. Your mutual responsibility is to effectively get food that you want to your table, while attempting to annoy each other only minimally. The unspoken agreement, of course, is that the better you act as a customer, the higher the quality of the service you receive.?

There is a sign in most restaurants that says something along the lines of reserving the right to refuse service to certain individuals who may be loud and offensive, and they do ?yet they DID serve you AND continue to serve you with a smile and thanks for your so-called “patience?and business. The door opens both ways. If you’re so distraught over the fact that you can’t get your breakfast at neck-breaking speeds, while the place is jam-packed, push the door open and find another restaurant that is willing to serve you at three o’clock in the morning ?you know who you are.

Waiters/waitresses put up with a lot of crap, and that’s in every restaurant, put yourself in their shoes, just for one minute. After this revelation, I promise, when you say, “Scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, topped, diced, and peppered? you’ll be sure to smile and put “please?at the end of any further requests and once it arrives a “thank you?will do nicely. For the record, 15% after taxes is the proper tip amount, 20% for excellent service. It’s called common sense and decency, there are many who lack it ?you know who you are.

A personal thank you to all the Waffle House employees,
    Amy

As a 9 year WH veteran, I must agree with the post about tipping waitstaff. Most states pay waitstaff less than half the minimum wage. These tips are based on service as well as ticket price. Be nice 10% is old school. I work in Alabama where my waitresses make $2.13 per hour plus tips. Some don't know how to ask for a raise and are sometimes over looked when their raises are due. Say you have only a coffee...in my store that is a total of $1.13...Try a dollar tip and not the 87cents left over from your $2.00.

Be kind to your waitress and remember, if the food is great, it's not illegal to tip your cook.

I am a 21 year old college student and I had the privledge of working at Wa-Ho this summer. I spend the summer with a college ministry where we learned to grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ, but during the day we all had full-time jobs...and mine was as a Waffle House waitress. It was incredible!! Panama City has the busiest Wa-Ho during the summer and I got to be right in the middle of it. So you're right it is great. I'm glad you love it to!!

I have worked for the Waffle House in Col. Ohio for almost 5 years. I was asked to move to a manager position 2 or 3 years ago but there's one problem. They want me to cut my hair. I'm being done a great injustice. Please help voice your opinion and share with them that I should not miss out on oppertunities or be discriminated against because of my long hair.

Hello, I love the Waffle House! I have always enjoyed going there anytime, day or night, and especially the atmosphere! I have lived in TN, LA, MS, and other states. Though I currently live in San Antonio, TX and there are NO Waffle House's here! Not even within a 100 miles! I am very distraught about this fact. I would really love to have one here in San Antonio!!! Just recently they opened a Krispy Kreme here and the first month or so there were lines around the block! I am sure that if there was a Waffle House around here it would definitely flourish! Please, Please, PLEASE help with this in any way you can! Thanks.

    Yours Truly,
    A Waffle House Lover

Hi! I worked at Waffle House in Hixson Tn and Monteagle Mountain Tn for the past 4 years. I loved my job. Being a Waitress I met so many interesting people. People that I got to know well due to their day to day loyalty to our staff. People would call to see if a certain cook, no names mentioned, Tommy was working. No Tommy No waffle house. I was single and worked alot of overtime. The tips were great. I quit last year because I met the most wonderful Catfish, and couldn't stand to be away from him for very long. Now we have been togather for almost a year and a half. I am ready to go back to work, but he doesn't want me to go back to Waffle House. Some of the stories I have told have pushed him over the edge, LOL. We love Waffle House food, and still go to eat at the Hwy 153 store where I worked, but I am recognized by customers and barely able to finish my meal. Being an ex- Waffle waitress I enjoy the attention. Thats why he doesn't want me to go back. I just thought I would share my sadness of not being able to do the job I loved. I love Catfish more though and respect his wishes. Just remember folks, waffle House is the only place you can go where the food is good and the company even better.

    Sparkles the Waffle House Waitress.

Hi, my name is John Wescott. I'm a division mgr for WH in the home of the Buckeyes (C-Bus,OH)13-0!!!!

For the past 18 yrs, I've dedicated my career to the best full service chain in the nation. My greatest contribution to WH was pioneering the method by which we remember the orders being prepared, known to the select group of skilled grill operators as "THE MAGIC MARKER SYSTEM". Our franchise, J.THOMAS&co, started using it about 10 yrs before Corporate did (1987).Even though the original system was much different, we adapted to the modified version that corporate presented and can attribute much of our success to this system. I first ckecked out your site about four years ago and am amazed to see how many people have responded to this WaHoo phenomenon.

I have so many stories that I could share that could take up your entire web page. Instead you may post my e-mail address if you wish, and I would be happy to answer most (except company secrets!) questions. I am eggspert07@aol.com. Thank you for creating this awesome page!

We just love the Waffle House. It is like home-cooking, and the price is reasonable too. Even though we are allergic to cigarette smoke, we attempt to eat there every now and then; however, we'd visit more if there were non-smoking sections. It is difficult to consume food while choking on smoke. I read a previous article on this web-site about a customer entering a Waffle House and asking if there were no-smoking sections, to which the waitress replied something like, "Darling, if you don't want to smoke, we won't make you smoke." Amazingly, she had not the clue that those who cannot or choose not to smoke ARE most definitely made to smoke in an atmosphere such as that. It is called "second-hand smoking" aka "passive smoking." And in case she reads this, she may learn something new.

Hi! My husband and I met three years ago while we were both stationed in Georgia. For our first date, we went to Waffle House; it was clean, inexpensive, had great food, and a great atmosphere. In other words, it was the best. We went there for all our subsequent dates. I still remember sitting across from him my face almost hurting because I couldn't quit smiling. We moved back to his hometown Jamestown, NY a year later and got married after we were both discharged from the army. Unfortunately, there aren't any Waffle House resturants anywhere close and my husband and I feel homesick for the South for this reason. Someone needs to open a Waffle House up here so we can enjoy the food again and take our children there. Please somone open a Waffle House up here! Jamestown would be great; I know there would be a lot of customers.

Hi! I have worked for waffle house for about 5 years now. My husband started out as a cook (this is where we met) He is now the manager and I have the position of sales person cordinator. If you are ever in Indiana stop by and see us in Shelbyville at the St, Rd 9 and E. 74 exit!

Dennis and DJ would like to say hello!!!!!!

I have been working for Waffle House (North Lake Foods Inc.) as a Grill Op and now a Lead Associate, and soon to be a Unit Manager, and just wanted to clear up the lock situation, Part of my manager training is that I had to spend two days working with our maintenance dept. and I asked him about it...and they do have locks and in everyone of North Lake Food's 150 stores, the locks free spin in the door, and will not engage without a key (they are all the same key from Florida to Tampa if it's a NLF store). We don't need these locks even if there is a hurricane, tornado, or flood, we are always open, I am sure that they would close a more coastal unit, but it is highly unlikely, and even if they close it, someone has to sit in it, and do nothing or clean...trust me I went around and around about this fact because I thought it was dumb to have someone in a locked building with no customers.

The biggest mistake I found after moving from Texas to Las Vegas, NV was that there are no Waffle Houses in Vegas, with all there is there is no Waffle House in Vegas. I have all the WH's mapped out once we hit I- 40 back to Texas and from there I've got it covered. The one thing I would really like to get my hands on (without swiping it) are a couple WH menu placemats so I can through 'em down and dream I was back there every now and then. Is there like a black market to buy a couple at?

    Just sign me,
Homesick for scattered and covered in Vegas.

My name is Rachel, I work at the winnie waffle house unit#956. I've worked there since I was 16, I'm 23 now. We started out a company store, but are franchise owned now by Larry Cannon. Winnie is a small town and so I feel that my costumers and coworkers are like family to me. I'm now 7 months pregnant and swear that my sons first works will be "waffle on two, two bacon". I met my husband here, he was a cook. We started dating and finaly were married, then he was made Manager. People were so amazed that I could work side by side with my husband as my boss. But then people How I thought was my friends told a bunch of lies, They know who they are, and he quit. Winnie is now short a damn good cook. I read other poeple talking about the locks on the doors, and someone said that we need them to lock if there is a hur ricane or something, we were told once before that waffle house does not close for ANY reason. I have met Joe Rogers once, it was a cool experince and I ask him for a business card. He signed the back for me, I still have it. I too remember the all you can eat menu. I love waffle house it has been a part of my life for 7 years, but I think it is time for my crew to remember what loyalty and love is all about. Some have forgotten.

    Hi,

I just became a recent salesperson/waitress at WaffleHouse in Englewood ,known as Americas #1 WaffleHouse, they call it that because the owner likes it the best, etc, well I just wanted to say,I wish I had more nice customers like you folks:)

Stop by sometime we have great cooks:)

I got hooked on Waffle House once I stopped at one in the Columbus area for breakfast. Their waffles are unique...never tasted any better waffle anywhere...even ones I make myself at home. I also love the hashbrowns. Even if I get a burger, I'd order a waffle for dessert. Waffle House makes a road trip to Columbus and points south in Ohio worth it.

I'm also glad that Waffle House is finally reaching Northeast Ohio...there's one under construction at I-77 and Arlington Road in Akron. Now I don't have to drive to Perrysburg or Columbus for my Waffle House fix. With Akron getting a Waffle House, could Cleveland be next? I hope so.

I had my first Waffle House experience off I-81 in Stanton, Virginia. It was fantastic! My friend and I walked in the door and everyone who worked there said a sincere "Good Morning!" We sat at the counter and received immediate attention. We told our waitress that it was our first visit. After we ordered, I went to the jukebox to play some songs and found the Waffle House selections-I put in a dollar and played the first six. Much to my surprise-as the songs started playing the cook and waitresses sang along! The food was great and I couldn't wait until I returned home to talk about my experience. Since then, anytime I visit the South, I make sure to have at least one breakfast at a Waffle House. Unfortunately, there are no Waffle Houses in Southern California and I am suffering badly. I feel that LA could definitely use a little southern hospitality!

Hey! How is everyone? I'm just great! I just was messing around online, looking to see how many Waffle House pages there were and found this one first. I work at a Waffle House, Unit #1498. It's in Toledo, Ohio. I was reading where someone said the one farthest north was Perrysburg. Well, we just opened about 6 months ago and it's great. We're right off of I-75 on Airport Highway. I absolutely LOVE my job. I remember when I walked in there to see about an app. The grill op was doing the floors and someone asked him if he was ever in the service and he replied yes so that struck up a conversation. I also just want everyone to know that our group of girls and grill ops are the greatest ever. We work our butts off to keep our store clean, and we are the highest volume store in our area. Way to go Rick McPherson(unit manager), Janet Niday(MIT), Allen Harris(MIT), Pam Staup(MIT, we miss you!!!), Andrew, Jon B, John N eu(we miss you!), Doug, JR(we miss you!)--our wonderful Grill Ops AND 1st shift--Cindy, Desiree(we miss you!!!!!!), Tracy, Cortney, Anne, Angel, Jan, Jennifer(we miss you!), Emily(welcome!), 2nd shift--Kyle(you go boy, the only male server!), Jenny, Sherri, Krista, Lisa, Jason(welcome!!), 3rd shift--Robyn, Jazan, Jayne, Sheree, Sara(we miss you, congrats!). I just want you to know I love you and appreciate you all. We run a kick butt store and everyone knows it! I'm gonna miss you when I leave, but I wanted to make sure that we all got recognition somewhere, somehow. You're all great people! Smile!

I am thoroughly convinced we need more Waffle Hice in this country. (Yes, "Hice". Mouse=mice, louse=lice. I is a English major!)

I'd never encountered the Almighty Waffle until I was driving trucks and ended up meandering about the South. The Waffle House logo appears almost every ten feet, like the DQ sign in Texas, and it wasn't long before the subliminal advertising wore me down. I found one where I could park 18 tired wheels and sat down.

The guy behind the counter was friendly enough for a total stranger. He even explained to me (in one breath and in less than 45 seconds) all twelve thousand ways they prepare hashbrowns, and made sure everything was made to spec.

Fast forward to now, nine years later, and I had no idea that the grand and noble Casa de Waffle had made its way to Colorado. Strictly by coincidence, I took the kids to Loveland, 40 minutes north of Denver (10 if you drive like a real man) to see the Blue Angels fly, and on the way, I passed many, many Waffle Hice. The nearest to my home town is in Colorado Springs, and lucky for me it's only a half hour drive. Well worth the wait.

Join me in urging our state and federal legislators in shutting down Denny's, Home of the Congealed Grease Breakfast Platter, and replacing them with as many Waffle Hice as humanly possible.

    All praise to the Waffle.
    Byron

I just surfed the web and found information, but the idea still cracks me up. Here's my story:

My cousin and I spent some time out tonight. We took a drive to the river front, had some conversation, just messing around a bit. He suggested the idea of going to a waffle house. I finally thought, "what the hell?" and drove to the nearest one.

When I go into restaurants I like to observe things. As I'm taking a bite into my cheeseburger, I'm listening to the music that someone chose on a juke box. Now, this music, in my opinion, is really crap sounding, but I try to listen to the lyrics. Bad idea.

As I try hard not to believe what I just heard, I start staring at my cousin. He starts listening, and then when I see he gets it, I start laughing my ass off. I know my face got red, and I was on the verge of crying. I just kept hearing the words "at the Waffle House". Every time my cousin made a joke about it, I almost choked. It was so damn funny to me.

So as my cousin is paying the check, I told him I was going to find the artist who sung that. Holy shit! There was a whole column of nothing but Waffle House inspired songs. "I Feel Good at the Waffle House" was the one we heard. There was something about "I Love Hash Browns" and "Make Mine with Cheese". My God, I knew waffle houses are revered, but how did I happen to miss this portion of pop culture?

    Kamran,

I enjoy your websit very much. I'm a Waffle House fan myself. I'm a unit manager at #651 in Powdersville, S.C. I think the most enjoyable part of my job are the customers. In my wh, we have lots of regulars, some I've known for years. Taking care of the customer is what we do best. I take pride in my job and in my employees. Thank you for this website, and for showing everyone how wonderful Waffle House can really be.

    Thanks,

This weekend my friends and I ate at a Waffle House in Hampton, VA.

The wait was long, but the food is worth it.

While there a customer stood up to ask for the manager because she had been seated for 1 hour and 45minutes but had not received any food.

Later we found out that the Waffle house had run out of clean dishes, cups, coffee mugs and silver wear, but instead of sharing this information to the customers the waitress decided to keep it her little secret.

The manager told the customer, "If you can not be patient with us, there is the door, you can use it!"

The customer said, "How dare you say such a thing to me. I have been patient for one hour and 45 minutes. You should have offered that to me when I first came in here instead of letting me sit here all this time with no explanation! But you know what I sure will take it. I will not stay here!"

The manager told her to have a pleasant day and the frustrated customer said," And F _ _ _ you too!"

The entire resturant let out a huge outburst of laughter. The manager called everyone's attention. She said, " Quiet and the house. Can I have everyone's attention. My staff and I are doing our best since 6am this morning. We have run out of clean dishes but we are still serving. My staff and I do not need extra frustration with hard to manager customers. If there is anyone else in here that cannot be patient and thinks that that was funny you can use the door too."

The people that were waiting to be seated got up and left. A few customers at the counter got up and left.

I would like you to know about the Waffle House located in Clinton NC on I-40. This unit # is 1023.

My wife and I stopped at this restaurant on Monday June 24th. We were greeted as we came in the door, but because of all the noise we could not hear them. The flies were everywhere.

We sat and waited for a waiter/waitress to take our order. Finally a waitress came over and took our food and drink orders. We waited and waited and watched other people come in and get their food orders. When our order finally came, it wasn't what was ordered. It took the waitress several trips to bring our food in shifts.

Bacon on one plate, eggs on another, toast on another, hashbrowns on another. I had to return food because it wasn't what was ordered. When it came time to pay our bill, noone would come to the register to take our money. We asked one waitress if she would take our bill and she said no, and yelled for another waitress that was in the back room smoking, not on break though.

We will still stop at Waffle House, but not n Clinton NC again. I think that a new staff and a good cleanup of that unit is in order.

Thank you for allowing this web site to vent our disappointment.

    Sincerely,
    Ronn & Brenda Marcelais

Hi, I have never been to the waffle house, but I am beginning to have an uncanny obsession with it. I wanted to know from your prespective, what is it in essence that has driven you to love it so much, enough to establish and maintain a website based around it? What in general would you say is so amazing about it? What compels people to love it so much? I plan on makeing a trip to one in maryland on my way to Washington next week and wanted to get a better preception of this mecca before I get there ( I live in Philadelphia, and we don't have any here). In addition to thqat what do you reccomend I have when I am there? The way that this all began was via the mention of it from some people I have met, who absolutly raved about it, and just went on qand on and on, so I had to explore it, and now i'm excited to experiance this. In any case please email me back.

    thank you,

I would just like to say that I was on a road trip to Florida and I am from Michigan. I haven't really been out of the state but for Canada. We stopped at Denny's for some breakfast(booo!) but when it cought my eye! A waffle house! I thought to myself wow never seen one of those before. We kept going farther and farther and i kept seeing more and more. I thought it was kind of neat seeing it. I am only 17 years old but i know that waffle house is pretty cool. I talk about them all the time... During the summer me and a bunch of my friends are going to go eat at one so we can be cool! haha and on my school work there is nothing but waffle house written all over my papers! you can even ask my teachers! well just wanted to share my w/h story! thanks see YOU at the house!

    Kris J.

Well, well, well. I don't really know how I came to be such a waffle house fan. My love affair began in high school when the proper way finale to an evening at your boyfriend's high school football or basketball game was a trip to the waffle house.

It blossomed, though, while I was in college. I spent most nights at the Waffle House on Martha Berry Highway in Rome, Georgia. Half the time it was studying, the rest of the time it was recovering from a night out partying. Poor waitresses, the place was always overrun with college students who took up tables with their biochem books for three or four hours at a time and only ordered coffee or kids too drunk to calculate a tip. I will never understand the logic of using the same place to study and sober up but that is the magic of Waffle House. I spent the summer before my senior year in the redneck riviera, home of the world's busiest waffle houses (is that legend or not?)--Panama City Beach--and how did I end up supporting myself? Waiting tables at the wa-ho at the intersection of Hwy 79 and Back Beach Road. My regulars were the bouncers at La Vela, some left-over sixties free spirits who lived out of their trucks in some parking lot by the beach, and Ed, a distinguished true southern gentleman who always had hot tea with his order over light wheat. Boy did they ever make a crazy mix when you threw them together with the yuppie vacationers from South Walton and the wild college kids from Syracuse and Ohio State.

Now that I have graduated and I have a job my parents consider respectable I can look back on those years fondly. And share my favorite Waffle House food: french toast. Ask your waitress to mix a little milk and the syrup she uses to make vanilla coke with a couple of eggs. Dip a couple of slices of texas toast into this mixture, grill it for a little while, pour on some syrup and you have one heck of a breakfast. She probably won't do it if the manager is around, but, hey, its worth a shot.

    Lauren

I met my wife at Waffle House about 11 1/2 years ago. We have been married now for10 years come May. She still works at Waffle House, waitress to manager. She's manager at her second store now, 2 stores in 12 years and same franchise. (Raleigh N.C. area) She did work at a couple of corporate stores before she moved here. Total time in Waffle House about 18 years. I guess the WH does get into your blood.

By the way, we are still happy together.

    Hey!

I grew up in Duluth, GA and have grown up with Waffle Houses on every corner and in some cases like here one on both sides of I-85 at Pleasant Hill. Needless to say I've since left the area and am now living in DC and now my quest is finding one there. I just printed up directions to one and can't wait to get to it for I miss the great, cheap food and the people. But I have educational ties to the Waffle House also because my senior year of high school I slacked off and skipped a lot fo classes. Well my friend would go to our classes and then meet me at the Waffle House just down the street from me and she taught me my entire senior year of math in the back table of that Waffle House. The job I do today relies heavily on my mathematic skills and I'm at the top of the game. Thanks Waffle House, and as soon as I can I'm moving back south until Waffle Houses dot the country from coast to coast.

    ~Derek

    Dear Kamran,

Just wanted to drop you a note about your website. We are glad to see that you, other Customers and our Associates are having fun sharing Waffle House experiences through your website. We also appreciate that you recognize that we hold certain copyrights and trademarks. We have not yet decided on how we will deal with the many websites that use Waffle House copyrighted logos and other trademarks. While we have fun with our brand, we would appreciate it that for now you would not post emails that have profanity or don't live up to the family atmosphere we like to project at Waffle House. Thanks again for your support of Waffle House and you're right, the chocolate pie is best when frozen.

    Sincerely,
    Pat Warner

P.S. Just wanted to update some information on your site. Bert is still working with Waffle House. He did indeed invent and perfect our chili recipe, and currently he is a senior operator who is responsible for all our 630+ company-owned restaurants. Bert can be caught working in our restaurants every day!

Hi!! I got my very first job at a Waffle House in Newnan,Ga 5 years ago.. I thought it was the most horrible place to work, long hours, staying up all night and of course the drunks.. Finally I got a better job but I didn't stay long. Why? I was addicated to the WH!! After 5 years, I've worked in at least 30 different ones, but the best one was in Pelham, AL next to Oak Mt. Amputheater.. The management is wonderful and the regulars there are great!! Thanks for your site and reminding me that WH is America's place.. And to the guy from Australia, it was probably the fact that you had a 'tude is to why you weren't served promptly.. Those ladies are great!!

    Thanx,
    Klo

    Dear Kamran:

I wanted to let you know about the latest CD release here at Waffle House called "It's A Waffle House Christmas". You can hear samples of the songs by going to www.wafflehousechristmas.com. Let me know how you like it.

    Thanks,

    Kewl Site....

I've worked at Waffle House off and on for goin on 5 years now (unit 1078 Sherwood, Arkansas). Whew!!! Sometimes its great and sometimes its not. I'm college right now trying to get out the cookin biz. It has been exciting to say the least. I'm thinking about writing a book titled "Six Tits and 3 Teeth...Observations from 3rd shift at a Waffle House!" I've givin it a lot of thought.

    Like your site,
    Justin

tell chris to go to any waffle house and ask for a pamphlet of all the waffle houses that are in existence.....i work for one in charleston sc...assistant manager....we have them and most should.....

Hi this is for Andrea at unit 946. I have been working at waffle house for about 6 years now and I still love it. I am only 21 but am a manager trainee and will have my own store in a few weeks. First of all if you think it's all about the money you don't deserve to wok for WH. If the service to those regular customers are so great then why did they go to IHOP in the first place. When my regulars go somewhere else for even one day I hunt them down and find out why and how I can fix it. In fact now that I've been moving around more they follow me. If you put the customers first (even the ones that don't tip) then the money will come later. Trust me. And another thing DO NOT give waffle house a bad name by saying that if you piss your server off you food will be messed with. All those that were planning on going to unit 946 can come on down to 1029 in Macon, GA. We will not contaminate your food in any way! . Why? Because we are professionals and we choose not to act like children!!! That is disgusting and is not tolerated under ANY circumstances.

i work for waffle house unit number 946 in north little rock arkansas. i have a crrection to make to someone who said that the waffle houses on I-75 start about 50 miles south of toledo ohio. i was recently in toledo to vist family and this gut needs to check his info. because ther is a waffle house in perrysburg which is about 3 min. south of toledo this is a new waffle house but it is there and there is not another on north of that one in ohio. also i would like to say that while i have been working for the same waffle house for almost four years i have run into alot more really rude customers than nice ones. and it is true that a witress will remember the nice customers and the ones who tip well. if you tip you will get good service. we also remember the really bad customers. if you are of these people you will usually not get good service upon your return you will be talked about and! called bad names. and remember that you should never make your server mad because even at the waffle house it is possible to have your food messed with. i have seen it done many times and you would not belive the things that can still be done to your food even when you can see the entire staff that is handiling your food. i would like to say thatmy regular customers are the ones that i work for because they are the garunteed money makers. so if you come in and you don't get the same service as the kids sitting there playing cards know that it is because they are there every night. i am really disappaointed in they way that some of my regulars have taken of to the ihop that just opened up down thae road from my store so if you are considered a regular at a waffl;e house you should try to remeber the feelings of those that have given you loyal service for so long and dont desert them for the ihop. i am one of those waitress that does have t! he drinks of my regulars on the table for tham when they come in the door and there oreders already called in for them. hint to salespeople, if you know your customers and treat them like that you will make better money and it impress them. not only am i a waitress but i am also a master grill operator if you are ever in a waffle house and there is one cook and four waitress and the cook seems to be treating the wait staff very poorly you should know that there is a reson for that and it most likley that the wait staff does not have a clue as to what they are doing dont always feel sorry for them. i have an answer for chris from boston go to the waffle house offical web page to find out exactally which waffle house it was there is a map that has all of the waffle house locations on it. it should be pretty simple.

i have something to add. on the menu it says there are over 22 million ways to eat a hamburger. ingred: cheese luttuce tomato onion pickle and mayo on the plate and then all of the steak sauces we have. also bert is no longer a part of the company he just invented the chilli an yes i have met him and no he really does not have anything to do with the comoany any more and yes in arkansas we still have the all you can eat menu it is seperate from the normal menu and you have to ask for it but we do have it $7.49 pluss tax comes to $8.24 it has waffles plain and pecan omlets plain and cheese eggs prepared how you want them but scrambled with cheese is extra bacon and sausge but not ham plain hashbrowns scattered smothered covered chuncked topped diced and peppered are extra breakfast sandwiches hamburgers pattymelts basically everything except what we call major meats (steaks chicken pork chops) and sorry but soup! and chilli are not included and the most northern waffle house i have seen is in perrysburg ohio about 3 min south of toledo if it is even that far and yes it is a new waffle house to find out about locations of waffles houses all over the country the offical waffle house web page has a map of all of them and they sell cds of the waffle house songs so check that out.

Hi, wow. What a page! I've been working for a Waffle House in Arkansas for two years now (currently a grill operator.) A couple months ago I came up with the top ten ways you know you're a Waffle House employee.... saw this page, thought I'd share. :)

    --Angel

The Top Ten Ways You Know You're A Waffle House Employee

  • 10. After working third shift on Saturday night, you fully understand why the manager insists that the waitresses shirts not be tucked in.
  • 09. You know what "King T-Bone and eggs, well over well, raisin, give me grits instead and waffle on six like three" means.
  • 08. You've ever been pregnant while working for a Waffle House (or, if male, your wife has ever been during your tenure at Waffle House.)
  • 07. You've ever left during your shift to go joy-riding on a regular's Harley.
  • 06. You've quit, only to find yourself waiting tables or cooking in the same Waffle House not two weeks later.
  • 05. You've ever fallen asleep on the prep table.
  • 04. You've ever set a Waffle House trashcan accidently on fire.
  • 03. You know there are a million ways to order a burger and hope like hell the customer doesn't ask you to name them.
  • 02. You understand the importance of making drunks feel sorry for you.
  • 01. You've accidently gotten addicted to the coffee just by serving it.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE waffles! This summer when my boyfriend and I went to Colorado Springs we ran across a Waffle House. He had eated at one before in Kansas City but I being from Omaha,NE unfortunately had no knowledge that such a place existed! So I was extremely excited to try it out. Now I love old fashioned homemade waffles none of this belgian waffle crap that other breakfast places serve, so when we found it and ate there you can imagine how I instantly fell in love with the place! I was immensely pleased and impressed! The waffle house is truly and American icon and there should be one in every city! They have the best food and the best service at a great value and you can go there anytime! Best of all they have the best waffles!!! I boycott the IHOP's in town and was greatly disappointed to find the nearest Waffle House is in Kansas City! However, it will not hinder me from driving there just to visit a Waffle House. I am a huge fan! It is truly a joy to have the one I love bring me the experience of the Waffle House! Long live Waffle House!!!

    Kelli

My husband is the manager of unit 769. I did a google for Waffle House. Who knew!! You guys keep eating those waffles!! Don't they smell heavenly when they are baking?

I lived in Atlanta GA for the first 18 years of my life. Last year, thinking I needed a change in atmosphere, I relocated to a college in Boston MA. While Boston is a better city than Atlanta, it's missing one critical element: WAFFLE HOUSE!!! I can't even begin to describe how much I miss the hash browns, grits, vanilla cokes and waffles. To all considering school in the Northeast: it's a great place, but life without Waffle House is simply not worth it. Thinking back on the late night meals and the early morning breakfasts, the fact is nothing beats WaHo. I had a first date there, post prom meals, a grit-filled food fight, and it even served as stalking grounds for the hot guy my friends and I lusted over. Thank you Waffle House for the memories, and I'll be back soon. BYE.

I know I'm pushing my luck here, But I'm trying to find out which Waffle house I was at 2 weeks ago In Georgia on I-95 somewhat near the FLA border. (We were traveling from Boston) It was the middle of the night and the waitress was named Kim. (Thin with Blonde dyed hair) Any idea of how I might find out this info?

    Thanks for your help,
    Chris - Boston MA

[If anyone has an answer for Chris, e-mail me and I'll pass it along.]

I came here to pick up my spirits about my Waffle House, and lo and behold, it seems to have been forgotten along with the other 8 Waffle Houses in Panama City. what could have happened? Do I not smile as I lovingly serve you your diet Coke, Berl? And Mike, do I not religiously already have your order called in by the time you walk through the door? Wanda, have I not discussed Waffle House drama with you everyday at your lunch time for the past 3 years so that you'll have enough gossip to get you through the rest of your work day? You couldn't survive without your daily dose of "As the Waffle Burns." I have been let down, saddened really, by this deplorable behavior. Please redeem yourselves, or may your children never taste the goodness that is Waffle House #1247 in Panama City, Fl.

P.S. Smebycakes, if you read this, Crystal misses ya.

Well I Have to tell ya, the Northern Invasion Of Waffle Houses are Moving north, Me Living In Ann Arbor, MI. It use to be 115 Miles Southwest Of Ann Arbor In Lima, OH. Now It looks like its now 55 Miles South Of Ann Arbor In Perrysburg, OH. I'm Wondering Could it happen. Could Waffle House Cross the State Line into Michigan. if this waffle house chain keeps moving north into Toledo It may very well happen which would be good since Michigan Doesn't have any Waffle Houses, Plus some of the residents who live in the south like in Georgia, Arkansas, And Tennesee Would love to See Waffle Houses in Michigan. Well time for me to go, but keep up the good work Waffle House.

Iwas living in Nowestern North carolina in 1997 and was working a contract job in New Jersey for several months. Can you spell n-o g-r-i-t-s? I managed to get home most weekends, sometimes by flying and other times driving the 600 miles. My most memorable driving trip home was after I'd been in NJ for three weeks. I came into NC on I-95 about supper time and stopped at the first Waffle House I could find in the Raleigh-Durham area and had the best scramble cheese raisin plate I'd ever had. The grits were perfect, and the eggs mixed up with 'em were a dream. How do they survive up north without it?!?!

Like someone else here, I too have never had a Waffle in my hundreds of visits and 15+ years of eating at WH!

This is a letter to Dave, the guy who is at Colorado U. There are Waffle Houses in Colorado. I don't know if you are close to one but here are a few to check out: 2 in Colorado Springs, a couple in Denver, 1 in Aroura, I think the total of them is seven in Colorado. I used to work in the 2 in Colorado Springs. So if you really like them take a better look around.

I miss Colorado I now live in Pennsylvania.

    Good luck in your search.

Hi, I like waffle house because I have been to houston and oklahoma plus I know about the place first from the movie Tin Cup each time I go, I ask the staff for a hat or matches or whatever I wish they had t-shirts or ballcaps

    thanks

I mention WH in my chronicle of going to Florida on the Hot Rod Magazine 1999 East Coast POWER TOUR...

We frequent Waffle Houses quite often. Either to grab a quick snack or just a cup of coffee. 99% of the time, we are quite please with the service and food. However, we are occasionally disappointed, like tonight for instance. We went to the Waffle House at 500 Roberts Court, Kennesaw, Georgia this evening about 7 PM. We ordered one waffle, dark, with 2 eggs over medium on the side. The other order was a waffle, dark, with bacon. One waffle was imbedded with a black bitter substance, probably previously burned waffle. The bacon was burned and un-edible. We sent the bacon back, and it came back in about the same condition. In observing the food prep area, it was worse than a pig sty! Had we noticed this when we arrived, we would not have eaten there. I do believe it was the worse condition I have ever seen in a Waffle House in the many years we have frequested the establishments. This needs to be brought to the attention of management. If anyone doubts what we are saying, we kept some of the evidence.

    Robert & Dorothy Beatty

PS: We have eaten at this unit several times in the past and it was quite OK.

I lived in Hawaii for most of my short 18 years of life but for a tad bit I lived in Kentucky. The local punk kids adopted me and showed me their scene. Anyway the waffle house is such a cool diverse place, after every punk show we would always go to the waffle house for some cheap quality food and a place that doesnt care how rowdy we were. I will always remember the sight of punks eating at the waffle house at 3 in the morning.

hi my name is mike i work at waffle house unit #1091 in conyers, ga next to publix, i must say im proud of it too.

i remember during football season i was in the marching band. on our way to and from games i would count all the waffle houses in between. it would be real noisy on the bus, and i'd see the big yellow sign and be like "look, i see another waffle house!!! 23 so far!!!"' i also remember after all the football games we would go eat out somewhere. sometimes we went to waffle house, sometimes to IHOP. i dont like the IHOP as much though. the foods not as good, the service is not as good, they take alot longer to make the food, they dont have vanilla cokes or hashbrowns scattered smothered covered chunked everything else, theyre more expensive.... so from now on it's waffle house all the way

i remember one night after a football game we went to my regular W.H. to eat. Beckie, the former assistant manager, a short stringy-haired energetic woman, was waiting tables that night. we all sat down in her section. i got hashbrowns scattered double covered and a coke. i started playfully griping and giving her a hard time. i was like "hurry up and get me my hashbrowns" and "HEEEEY!!!! BECKIE!! I NEED A REFILL!!" while she was waiting on some other customers. she was ready to kill me by the time i left. but she and i both admitted later on that that was pretty funny what i did that night. i dont think either of us will ever forget it though.

i ve been with waffle house since the summer of 2000. i started off waiting tables during 3rd shift. 3rd shift can be pretty cool sometimes. we have kids that'll come in hang out for several hours, from like 1am or so to 430 in the morning or whatever and we have alot of fun chatting and stuff. i remember one night we saw a sheriff pull in to the parking lot then we all stuck our hands into the air like we were being robbed. it was pretty funny.

i remember sometimes i would fall asleep on the floor. id go into the office in the back room sit down on the stool and go to sleep for a few seconds. then id go back out onto the floor for a few more minutes until i get tired again and then decide to go back to sleep again. eventually my manager would let me leave and go home. then i would go home and go to bed, and sleep like a baby.

personally i think 3rd shift is the hardest shift to work. b/c 3rd is a 10 hour shift, whereas the other shifts are 7 hours. plus your biological clock has to adjust so you can sleep during the day and work during the night. plus the people that come in during 3rd shift, all those high school and college kids, all the drunk people, are the rowdiest group of people i've ever seen. but interesting stuff does happen during 3rd.

but they moved me off that shift after school started back again. they started having me door corp on weekends during first shift--this fit my marching band schedule perfectly and provided me just enough $$$ to support myself and everything i do at the time.

they started having me cook while i was door corping. i would drop meats and stuff on the grill. that was when i decided i wanted to learn how to cook. it took me some time, but i soon became a regular grill operator, then a 1st class cook, then a master grill operator, then they gave me an all-star uniform. i am hoping to go into management one fine day, to take over the store i work at, and then perhaps ill decide i want to move up even further from there, and then retire a rich and happy man.

i remember i had this dream one night where i was stranded somewhere, i didnt know where i was, it was dark outside, but i was inside a waffle house, safe and sound, sitting there having something to eat i dont remember what it was. ive probably had a bunch of other dreams too but unfortunately i cant talk about them all.

waffle house is always my favorite place to go between the time the rest of the world goes to sleep and the time i go to sleep. i always go in for a mr. pibb and possibly some grub. i dont mind paying for the food even though i work for them. i always get the chicken cheese sandwich plate scattered double covered grilled buttered bun and no garden. thats been my favorite item pretty much since i first started eating at the waffle house.

theres a lot more id love to talk about but i cant fit all my waffle house experiences onto a computer screen. but they will forever be remembered. i love waffle house im proud to be a part of it. that uniform is my pride, my joy,

    see ya later
    god bless,
    Mike

I am pretty sure I have been inside a Waffle House establishment at every time of the day. In high school (in Atlanta) my friends and I used to skip our early classes and go to waffle house to drink vanilla coke and eat raisin toast.

But my most exciting Waffle House moment was when I was visiting a friend in Montgomery and she took me to a spot where you can look out and see 4 Waffle Houses.

In all the thousands of times I have been to Waffle House, I have never eaten a waffle there.

    Go figure.

    Julie from Atlanta

    Hey,

My girlfriend and I are heading to Florida for a few days in March. We are going to save money and only eat at Wafflehouse establishments during our trip. The rest of the time we'll probably eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. We are mystified by the employee short-order lingo.

    Long Live Wafflehouse!

Thought you might like to post this at on the Shrine. My uncle scratched this on a Waffle House napkin in Atlanta a couple of years ago:

    WHAT A WAFFLE CAN DO

Take my daughter to the Waffle House,
For some coffee, eggs and ham.
She can't be with her Daddy,
    ‘Cause he’s a truck-driven?man.
These times all seem so precious,
Though the hours spent are few.
    It’s a miracle what a waffle,
In these absent times, can do.

    Hello,

well here is a story for you from wafflehouse employee. I went to work in a good mood and had a fairly but over worked day. I had to work section 2 which is where the high bar is and alot of dishes plus i was the only one on the cash register. I end up cooking alot of the food for my customers. Well a regular cook came in about 11:00 am. I called an order in and i had to repeat the order because he did not get it. Well part of the order came out except for the waffle and i checked to see why it was taking so long and when i seen the waffle which was still baking it had alot missing to it so i started another one because i wanted to deliver quality food. I did not think anything else about it and was not trying to offend the cook. Well i had another order to call in to the cook. I called out steak and eggs med. rare more on the rare side triple scramble with cheese rasin toast grits in a bowl/ t bone and eggs med over light scattered smothered. The cook just look at me and he had not pull a thing. So I repeated my order and he still look at me with a glaze in his eyes like he did not hear a word i said and I started to get discussed with him and repeated my order to him slower and very plain. The cook said to me that he can never understand what i said and i said to him, why not I talk very plain english. Well the cook called me a dam yankee and i could not speak well and I replied to him that I went to college and I had to take english, so i new their was nothing wrong with the way I talk, and i'm from Alabama. Well I had to get the cash register and I gave him my ticket to read the order off it while I took care of a customer. The cook could not read the ticket because he was not train to do that and he looked frustrated and started throwing his arms up into the air. The cook had no other order at this time. I got finish taking care of the register and tried once again to call in my order. When he did get the order cooked I delivered it to the customer and then I ask the cook if i intimadated him and he just repeated intimadated a couple of time and threw his armes into the air again. Well I did not think much about his attitude until later when I walked back into the back where he was doing prep work. I did not say a word to him until he said that I was a bi### and i ask did you call me a Bi### and he agreed but he would not say it loud enough for the relief manager to hear. I said to the cook that I was born with right to be a bi### and no one is taking that right away from me. I went to further to say to him that is should be just a prep person because the food on the plates he was sending out looked messy. Well then the boss said that was enought so I left and went back to check on the customer and I had to recook his order for him. The cook came back out and i had another order and call out a double quarter cheese and he said that he will not cook any of my food and I just simpley said thats ok with me, and he went to the back. The manager on duty had to come out and cook both orders for me. When i got off work I ask the next waitress coming on duty to fix me a bacon scramble sandwich for me and she started it and he finish it and when he found out it was mind he threw it away and he told the waitress that he dropped it. The waitress went to call it out to him and he said that i said that he was to slow and refused to cook it for me, so she had to. This cook has a real bad attitude he even was banging on the dish machine because it made noise. I don't like the fact that the boss is not releasing him from his duty and he is still there.

    Armonte King, Manager, He ROCKS!!!

Once a year, our group of friends has a party to celebrate,...on the anniversary of his death, ...the life and times of one Elvis Aaron Presley, The King! The only requirement is that you dress as your favorite version or interpretation of Elvis, Priscilla, or any of the rest of the clan (Lisa-Marie, Michael J., Bubbles the Chimp....all fair game).

After the party, we always go to Waffle House! Imagine the sight of 20 jump-suit clad Elvi with 20 dreamy 'Cillas on their arms, hair piled high, sauntering into the local WH for pecan waffles, hash-browns, and atmosphere.

It's a surreal scene not easily forgotten! (shiver!)

I just wanted to share a story about an experience at the Waffle House on 1470 Holcomb Bridge Road in Roswell, GA. My 5 year old daughter had been bugging me to take her to WH for lunch. After a Saturday morning Soccer game, we went to get some of the fantastic and utterly legendary chow this place is infamous for. She adored the huge waffle and the dinky glass of orange juice. I opted for the patty melt plate and coffee. Our waitress was delightful, offering crayons, a waffle house to color, and even posted the proud art on the wall above the jukebox. My daughter was delighted, and since it's October, looks forward to a Halloween visit to the upcoming spooky WH which we're informed will feature many ghostly things including a casket. Awesome! Thank you, Waffle House!

Hey I just ran across the Waffle House site you created. It was sooo cute and had me laughing my ass off.it was a good way to end my night of working third shift at the waffle house off of exit 18 unit 829 and Number One in our division I am proud to add.So if you are ever near Aiken,South Carolina be sure to stop by we would love to have you.Its people like you that make the Waffle House sooooo much fun to work for.

    THANKS

If you are a regular at the Waffle House then your time may be running out. I hope you can find time to read the rest of this email.

You site is great. haha. I never even heard of Waffle House until a trip to Georgia. Every exit on the road and there was a Waffle House. They were easier to find then a public bathroom.

First of all I want to say that the Waffle House is my favorite eating place besides home. The only problem is that I live in New Orleans and of all places it seems that the Waffle House has totally forgotten about my city. My wife and I love the Waffle House but we have to drive all the way to Slidell or Hammond to eat there. It would be very appreciated if you could get the word to the owner of the franchise that we need waffles here in New Orleans. Thank you.

    Hi,

My name is Aaron Wigfall. I work at WAFFLE HOUSE UNIT #233 in Charleston,S.C. I am a 3rd shift "MGO". That's "MASTER GRILL OPERATOR" in waffle speak. I've been working 3rd shift for the last 6 yrs. You tend to meet some very intresting people late at night. Did you know that "HOOTIE & THE BLOWFISH loves the WAFFLE HOUSE. So much that the name of their new cd will be called "SCATTERED,SMOTTERED AND COVERED". This is no joke. Check out their web site. Well that's all for now. If you can. Please post this on your web site. I think that friends of the WAFFLE HOUSE will find it intresting. ESPECIALLY ABOUT HOOTIE.

    Howdy:

I'm a yankee, but one thing I love about the south is the Waffle House. There's nothing I like more than a double waffle anda side of raisin toast. The Waffle House is hands-down my favorite restaurant, but one question lingers in my mind: "Why do they have cold syrup there?" Keep up thre good work.

    Andy

    Hello,

Came across your website today. Needless to say, I'm very impressed. I'm a former Dukie myself, having graduated back in '96. I've been in California since then, and have been planning for quite a while to make a 'mecca' to the westernmost WH. I understand that it's in Arizona somewhere, but I'm trying to map out exactly where it is.

Any help you could provide would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Sunil

I just got home from FLA. The nearest Waffle House to my granny's house is an hour away in Vero Beach. We drove to it and enjoyed a meal. We got paper hats, my granny put the menu under her shirt and stole it, and we got the to- go cups. It was fun. Then me and my granny went up to St. Simons Is. GA and on the way there we stopped at Waffle House 3 times. Of course that was all in one day. It was great. I have seen different variations of Waffle Houses and i have pics of them. Well BYE - Andy

Introducing the Waffle House 1000 Race Across America!

Rick Call of Bradenton, Florida won the first annual Memorial Day Waffle House Race Across America May 27-28, 2000. Runner up was Jason Vargo of Pittsburgh, PA. Call completed the race in 19 hours 35 minutes. Vargo finished a respectable 1.5 seconds off the pace in a prototypical turtle and hare finish. Rick piloted a 1999 Ryder box truck with 10 foot bed (in Waffle House Yellow). Jason, outfitted in a bright red Mazda Miata convertible, bolted to an early lead. The St. Clairsville Ohio to Bradenton Florida sprint began innocently enough at 6pm Saturday evening. A flat tire and 3 hour layover south of Charleston West Virginia nearly derailed Rick's chances, but the benevolent Jason held up on the throttle so his friend wouldn't be delivered over to Vern and his crew of post apocalyptic Deliverance buddies while waiting for the tow truck at the road side rest. A 3am dinner in North Carolina with cheese n' eggs, raisin toast, bacon, and grits provided the first relief. After a 6 hour layover in Mt. Airy NC, day two began with a repeat of cheesy eggs and on the road again. South Carolina, Georgia, and finally Florida palms streaked by as the pace quickened. They were locked into a zone as the top 500 oldies of the rock n' roll era provided rhythmic diversion as they bore down on an Orlando oldies station at 100.3 FM. A third gut full of cheesy eggs fueled the pair to the finish as the clock ticked past midnight. Rick crossed the last speed bump at the Sun Chase apartments a bed length ahead of the Miata at 1:05 AM as the checkered flag dropped. As Jason licked his wounds and tender rump after 1096 miles crammed inside the confines of the miniature Miata,he turned his attention to ESPN to watch the last laps of the Coca Cola 600. As the cars droned on and dawn approached, the bleary eyed Jason realized that he had been watching a tape delay of a race completed weeks earlier. The first annual Waffle House 1000 (actually 1096) was history, and so were our intrepid drivers, as the dawn of a new day arose......

Methinks I've found the one farthest north...on I-81 in Pennsylvania between Chambersburg and the PA/MD state line. I was utterly appalled to see this, my beloved WH in the land of the heathens...

    Hello!

My husband and I just traveled across the country, one coast to the other, and ate most of our meals at the WAFFLE HOUSE.

We parked and were walking to the door, when we saw this man wearing a WH hat, he was sweeping the area around the front of the building, he put his broom down, said, "good morning" opened the door for us and seated us giving us menus, smiling all the time. After our wonderful meal, walking out to the parking lot, we saw him again, scooping up all the leaves and papers from the grass, this is a man who really goes above and beyond.

i have worked under the yellow sign off and on since i was 18 and i am now 30. there are so many great people who come in and work there. and it really makes me angry when someone downs an employee. you have no idea how thrilled i am that there is a web site like this. there are alot of great stories that can be told from both the customers and employees. i have quite a few but not enough time to tell them all. but if you are ever in atlanta stop in and i will be happy to tell some. anyone who has never worked under the yellow sign has no idea what a thrill the job actually is.

    Tina

i have been a manger for waffle house for 15years. in fl. two years ago i had a bad car wreck and then they found cancer. the waffle house people have been great though all of this and hopefully i will be back at the job i love very soon. i hope to live long enough to pay my waffle house family back for all the support they have given me in the last 2year. anyone that has not worked for us has no idea how much fun they have missed. once you get that waffle syrup in your blood you are a life time member.

    Jackie

I heard the folk-singers, Neal and Leandra, the other night. They are from Minnesota, a state that supports no-smoking restaurants. While traveling in the South, they came to a WH. When they went in, Neal asked the waitress where the "no smoking" section was. She told them, "Honey, you can sit anywhere you want. We're not goin' to make you smoke in here if'n you don't want to!" I cheered them for going to a Waffle House, but the chain is unknown in Minnesota, so a whole theatre full of people confused. Their loss, I say, and this comes from a Yankee who has spent most of his life too far north for his own good.

Great page guys. I couldn't agree more about the goodness of Waffle Houses. I, being from Michigan, do not get the pleasure of eating at a Waffle House all that often. However, I was on my way back from Florida (driving up I - 75) and my girlfriend and I stopped in to eat breakfast. It was wonderful. It was more food than I thought I could eat. And all of it was delicious. I got to eat at a Waffle House two years ago, also driving back from Florida. That was my first Waffle House experience, and it was fantastic. I can only dream of a day when they will build a Waffle house within 100 miles of my home. But if they do, rest ashured it will be one of the best days of my life.

    -Matt

Here's a useless tidbit of info for you. . .there are 119 Waffle Houses on I - 75 from about 50 miles south of Toledo, OH to Sarasota, FL. I know because my girlfriend and I counted them all on our way down there.

Great site! My most prized possession: A Waffle House plate I stole from the WH in Slidell, Louisiana. While in college in Hattiesburg, MS, my plate was stolen (I think the cleaning lady took it from my sorority house), so what did I get from my boyfriend for college graduation? A new plate! With the wavy 'haunted house' font on it and everything. Imagine everyone's surprise as a tear rolled down my face after unwrapping the fanciest-looking gift--and it was a beat up plate!

Yeah, I feel bad about shoving the egg-coated plate into my pullover--I'm not usually a theif. But now its the only plate I can happily eat my grilled cheese off of. Hmmm, next time I get the Bert's chili and BLT combo, I might take the bowl too! Mmmm. Bert's chili. And they always put the cheese in FIRST, so its all melty in the bottom.

    Hello All,
I work at the Waffle House in Suwanee Ga. Unit 501. I was impressed with all the stories i have seen here, and wanted to add some info.

My husband is the manager, and i am a fill in. the WH that we are located, is the big one, northbound side of 85. The Atlanta Falcons training camp is just across the street. They all have a togo order on friday mornings, and it is about 250 dollars orders. most of them are BEC's (bacon, egg & cheese). Christmas 99, Eugene Robinson gave 50 dollars to every person that worked the, and we are all the time getting free Falcon merchandise.

Did you know that they bury the keys to the front door in the conrete front when they build the building? We never close. except on very rare disaters.

Come see us in Suwanee Ga, WH 501, the big one, and we can guarantee, "good food fast"

    Tina

    Guys

This is amazing. I am so excited to find your page. Really. I've got some great stories I will soon post.

I am a blue blood, straight-laced, Northern Yankee that truly believes that Waffle House enshrines the very essence of the South in every dimension. I travel frequently on business and have been known to turn down invitations at fine restaurants just enjoy precious moments at this true American landmark. Honest.

Off to the airport now to FL -- I'll send my reports. I can't wait to enjoy a Pecan Waffle with a cheap, bent fork and heaping plate of greazy hash browns served by a friendly waitress that I need a local translator to communicate with.

    Keep up the good work.

Cute page! I have some stories for you....

These happened at the Waffle House on Cobb Parkway, right by Dobbins Air Reserve Base. I was on active duty with the Air National Guard and my buddy Shelby and I used to do quite a bit of partying on base and at the bars nearby, so we frequented the WH a lot. Weird things happened there:

    - After a night of tequila shots, four of us went to the WH to eat. I have the dubious honor of puking on the lap of a big burly Air Force Chief Master Sergeant. I was on the inside of the booth, and couldn't get out quick enough - so there it landed. Good sport and true American that he is, he kept right on eating....

    - Another time, we had the worst service in the world (I waited tables off and on for 7 years so I know better). Our waitress in the virtually empty restaurant totally ignored us. So we left without tipping. She followed us into the parking lot to bit## us out for not tipping her!

    - One morning after a big party Shelby and I staggered in with huge heads. The only seats left were the last 2 on the counter. She scurried ahead and got into the seat by the wall, so I sat down next to an odd little old man with a DA hairdo and huge sideburns. As we slurped coffee and tried to lose the hangovers, we chatted. I felt a tap, tap, tap on my shoulder. The little old man said (he had a stutter) "Wha wha what k k k k kind of people are you?" I had no idea what he was talking about till I realized that my California accent marked me as a "foreigner". Well, he was nice so I told him I was from the West Coast, to which he said "Wh wh where's that?". Shelby is next to me about to wet herself from trying not to laugh. I told him (pointing west) "About 3000 miles that way". Well, to make a long story short, he asked why I was out here, I told him the military, which got him on a tangent about why the Army is better than the Air Force. God love him, he was like a character out of a Coen brothers film. To this day, all I have to say to Shelby is "What kind of people are you?" and she loses it!

In summary, I love the Waffle House, and I agree, it is worthy of a shrine.

Keep it up and happy New Year - Kim

Wow I came upon this sight and found it quite enjoyable We eat at WF once a year for breakfast outside South of the Border in North Carolina or is it in South Carolina all I know is that I am not going to Florida in 2000 and I will miss stopping by too bad there aren't any WF in the NYC area!

    Hello,
I work for wafflehouse in Ashland, Virginia at unit 1241. I just found your page today. It is great.

    Jim

Where do I start...in 1971 while at the AF Academy, we started meeting at the Waffle House on the Garden of the Gods exit on I-24 in Colorado Springs. It was usually about 1:30 in the morning after a dance at the Academy and we were in our formal military dress uniform. We would go there and commiserate about the loves of our lives....there was always an intersting composite of folks around there then, so a few military academy guys in uniform did not make much of a stir..1971-75. A lot of WH visits during travels and moves throughout the US.

When I was stationed at O'Fallon, IL, the only WH close was 22 miles away on I-70. I would leave for shift work an hour and a half earlier so I could drive there and back and get my fix. Montgomery, AL..we had 4 WH in 1989...made sure I went to every one. There was this waitress named Teresa who worked at the Ann Street Waffle house...a person who got your attention...lots of energy, excitement, attitude. She made visits a lot of fun. 1992 moved to Japan...no WH...

1995 back to WH country in Hampton, VA...Mercury Blvd WH. 1996....moved to DC no WH there...boo...I used to eat regularly at Anitia's resturant in Herndon, VA...I am told by old timers that the facility used to be a WH...as close as I could get without going south on I-95 to Richmond, VA. Fortunately, I was on the road a lot and got WH fixes in many locations.

1997...move back to Montgomery, AL area...there are now 7 WH in the city...make visits to the other 3. Where is Teresa? I actually live north of Montgomery...go to Prattville, AL WH on I-65N, exit 179 and Teresa is the Manager!!! Congrats Teresa...knew you would do well.

My wife and kids tolerate my WH addiction and will go with me at times. But I love it...real people...sometimes great, sometimes very bad, but always real. I love it.

God Bless WH and those who work there.

On the fourth of July, one of my friends had three friends from England visiting Auburn, Alabama. This was the first time they had ever been, to America, so I naturally thought I should take them to the most American insitution I could think of, so we went off to the local Waffle House. They had a very good time, and learned quite a bit about our country. Now, I live in Boston, where all resturants close at 9, so I long for WaHo quite often. For Halloween, I dressed as a Waffle House employee (using my friend's old shirt and visor), but no one noticed. Just one in Boston, just one. That's all I want.

    Keith.

at last...This Vandy grad can rest easier at night. a Waffle House within an hour of Philly... I visited the one in Elkton, Maryland last weekend. It is just across the Delaware/Maryland border on I-95... I got into talking with the manager who was from Atlanta. He was telling me that Waffle House locations will be opening in Delaware next year, with the most northerly location being in the Newark/Wilmington area. He indicated that there wasn't a big push to move into New Jersey or PA at this time. Costs were prohibitive is about all he would say. I presume he meant land costs up here. anyhow, the Elkton Waffle House is good, but it is lacking the yellow interior of the ones I frequented in Nashville. It is a "new style" Waffle House. The food is still really good...but they need to transplant some southern waitresses up here :)

Speaking of Waffle House t-shirts - I have seen one... while I was at school at Vandy, I saw a very attractive girl in the bookstore, wearing a shirt that said the following:

front: I got mine scattered, smothered, and covered back: at the Waffle House.

One of my co-workers does not believe that Waffle House had, at one time, an 'All-You-Can-Eat' Menu. I know i am not imagining this.

well, I have to say that I too am a WH lover. I recently moved from Mesquite Tx and i am missing my second home. I am coping by working at one here. I also have a story about my particular waffle house. I got into a little bit of trouble with the law and unfourtunatly went to visit the jail. I was lucky that my best friend was working the third shift and I called praying for some kind of savior. Who knew that it came in the form of waffle house. My best bud asked to leave and bail me out and because of the compasion of her boss, I did not have to rot in jail. THANK YOU WAFFLE HOUSE. p.s. if anyone is in the dallas fortworth area and you want to visit the best waitress there, go to the waffle house on highway 80 and beltline road. Ask for my destiny, she is a riot. Tell her that her long lost buddy sent you.

    Ralph

I have a great WH story. When hurricain Opel blew through Atlanta in October of 1995 it did some damage to the SW part of town and the suburbs out there. Well my husband and I lived in Stone Mountain, the extreme NE of town where there was little damage. So we get up to go to work, we worked at the same place in the fabulous Fulton Industrial area. We drive to work not knowing there was no power, but about 10-15 other employees showed up as well, there are normally 200+. Anyway, we were told since we showed up we got paid for the day, plus breakfast just bring back the receipt. So my husband, myself and a few friends from work head out to find something to eat in this hurricaine damaged area, and like a shining star there was the Waffle House with it's lights on. I swear it was the only building within miles that had power. So we go in, get our favorite food, mine is the egg & cheese sandwich with scattered & smothered hash browns. They had to make a fortune that day, but I always wondered how they had power and no one else did. We now live in California and a trip to WH is always top on the list when visiting family in the south.

    Bye, Toney

Hi there this is going to spin U out a bit I think.

I was over in Atlanta Ga last year and had the great pleasure of eating at a few of the waffle houses. After my 1st visit I fell in love with the place and had such a wonderful time eating there. I found the service was of the best I have ever seen and everyone was so friendly. I then made my b/f promise to take me back over and over again and it became a Sunday brunch every week for the whole 2 months of my vacation, plus some times inbetween 8-)

I have been back in Australia now for just over a year and I still crave for my Cheese and bacon omlets and my hashbrowns with the lot bar chillies. It is a damn shame and pitty that there wasn't a waffle house over here.

Just thought that U would appreciate the oppinions of a visitor to your country and how much I LOVE the waffle house. 8-)

    Marge

my wife and i ate our last meal together in a waffle house on indian trail road just outside of atlanta. she had been having some mental problems and was having a hard time going out for shopping. so just about every day when i came home from work we would go to waffle house. the older couple who worked there were very friendly and my wife suzy and i spent many a wonderful evening there. now my wife is gone and i think of her every time i pass a waffle house. i still eat there sometimes but it is a little hard on me.

just remember whenever you go out to eat , ask yourself how much better is this than waffle house?

Hello! I would like to thank all of the people who: have with apparent hard work, put together a great place to find out and share stories of AMERICA'S PLACE TO WORK AND EAT! the WAFFLE HOUSE. As a 15 year veteran of the WAFFLE HOUSE; I can truthfully say that if not all of the stories on your page are true then a full 99.9% are. A lot of things happen at the WAFFLE HOUSE. Day, night, morning, midmorning, midday and midnight. Although I could not share some stories today I would like to continue to offer an invitation to all of the people who read these e-mail to visit your nearest WAFFLE HOUSE and find the best food in town. Also ask your salesperson or grilloperator what they think of the money they make! I am sure you will find that at WAFFLE HOUSE you will be earning way more than you would ever have expected. Also management opportunities are available not only with WAFFLE HOUSE inc.,but with other franchises such as COLLIS FOODS, NORTHLAKE FOODS, TREE TOP, FREEMAN FOODS AND COASTAL WAFFLES, these are only a few of the numerous WAFFLE HOUSE franchises you could become a member, as an hourly or salaried employee.

THANK-YOU, again for this great site,
MICKEY PARKER, DISTRICT MANAGER COLLIS FOODS inc.

Hi! Love your page - it's great to hear about other WaHo cultists around the country. I live in Asheville, NC, and there are actually FOUR Waffle Houses around here, not two, as Jamie from Black Mountain had stated (one on Tunnel Rd. [the ONLY one, as far as I'm concerned], one on Highway 70 towards Swannanoa, one on Long Shoals Rd. (near the airport), and one next to the Biltmore Square Mall). Two of my best friends, Mikey and Mary - who are dating - work there, and Mary lives about 2 buildings down from me in my apartment complex. They know EXACTLY what I order almost EVERY SINGLE TIME I GO THERE. They'll see me coming to the door and have my order started already - a Texas Cheesesteak Platter, hashbrowns Scattered, Covered, and Chunked, and a Vanilla Coke (sometimes they'll just bring me the Coke separate and the vanilla syrup in a little glass and let me pour in how much I want). It owns! My personal record for the number of visits in one day is 4, and time spent is a little over 5 hours. This is actually pretty good, considering I don't have a car! Any quarters I have go into the jukebox. I once put a $5 bill in and selected 34 Waffle House songs - the first one I selected was 'Hotel California' - if I'm there, that song HAS TO PLAY at least once before I'll leave. Seriously. I've sat there for an hour until a friend of ours came in and I bummed a quarter so I could play that song. Another one of my best friends and I are going to shoot a movie about this glorious temple. We've got stage names, and a couple of good lines, but that's basically it - we haven't even figured out a name for it. Any suggestions would be welcomed! :) By the way, we're going to start a war with the IHOP that's at the top of the hill up from the Waffle House. I ate there once. It sucked big portions of ass. IHOP = evil, WaHo = holy. The only Huddle House around here is on the other side of town, and so is the Denny's. Not that anything would happen, but if anything DID happen to my beloved second home (flood, fire, any other act of dog), at least there's the HH to use as backup until WaHo is restored. We've also fit 7 people in a booth at once - believe me, this is no easy task! I'm a pretty big guy, so there was only room for me and one other small person on my side. There were 3 on the other side, and then we got 2 chairs and put them at the end of the table. Nobody ordered anything but coffee that time; it was just a test to see how many people we could possibly fit (I'm sure that two small people could take my place, and then there'd be room for 8). Hmmm...Let's see here...The sanitation rating is, for a hilarious and obvious reason, hung directly on top of the 'No Offensive Or Abusive Language' sign. I have no idea who put it up there, but it deserves a photo. And, for all of you who wanted to know, I have figured out how many ways there are to fix a hamburger:

Considering that there are 8 different ingredients (pickles, tomato, lettuce, cheese, mayo, mustard, ketchup, onions - there may be more, but this is for the sake of argument), then there are (4 x 3 x 3 x 5 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 3) x 5 (rare, med. rare, med., med. well, well) = 21,600.

A visit to (several) Waffle House(s) is the cornerstone of any good holiday in the USA.

Myself and a friend visited a couple of pals at the University of Georgia and enjoyed waffling at many of Athens, GA finest WH's.

One evening, after partaking several beers, we were dared into dancing round the restaurant (to 'Mmm Bop' by Hanson) in exchange for our dinners. We duly did, and started a short lived craze (of about 15 minutes) for dancing while you waffle. The chef joined in, but some Trucker/Biker-type customers looked a little shy to me. Perhaps they just wanted to sit and try and connect with their inner waffle. Anyway....

A couple of traffic Cops, who were sipping coffee at the corner table gave us one of those 'You crazy Limeys..' looks, which added a touch of rebellion to the evening...

For our disco-waffling, we were presented with hats and (wait for it) WH plates by the somewhat bemused staff. I told the waitress that she was the cutest woman I had ever seen (almost true) and we decided to leave as the Cops started to notice that we'd been drinking. Weren't sure how drunk you can legally get in GA without facing the Chair, so we opted out.

I was recounting this tale to my fiancee on the Eurostar earlier this year, and when we arrived at our hotel in Paris, the CEO of WH was checking in as we were checking out!! Truly co-incidental and not a little odd. It made me want to dance.....

i work at the WH in Avondale Estates. The first on was there and I'm at #1000. I know Tom Forkner. He comes in my WH all the time. He is s great guy. I love this site! I went cross-eyed reading it but it was worth it. Keep on WAFFLING!

Well, how should I start..We are from California and took our summer vacation in Pensacola, Florida with 30 immediate family members. These family members range in age from 1 years old to 70 years old. Boy, was any Waffle House in the nearest vicinity from our destination in for a shock. Our whole family took up every booth and chair in a Waffle House ! Our experience in any Waffle House was great and we could not get over the prices (t-bone steak and eggs with all the works $5.99) we can not buy 1 steak for $5.99 in California! in closing the Waffle House is the best and we wish we could have one in California!

You are my heroes! I just returned from my Sleazefest Wedding and Honeymoon in Chapel Hill, where we ate at the Durham Waffle House at 15-501 and 40(?) for 3 straight days. My new husband does not share my obsession. I am a displaced southerner living in northern virginia, he is from New Jersey. I just went looking for a Waffle House site, and shrieked for joy when yours was the first to turn up.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Rebecca Stone

Why is it Waffle House has 3 booths for smokers and the rest of the restaurant is non-smoking??????? Especially at 3 o'clock in the morning after everybody in there has just left a bar and is mostly to half-drunk?????

I damn near got thrown out of one tonight because I was sitting in a booth right next to the smoking area but was told I could not smoke at that table. I then cancelled my order and just paid for the coffee I drank. Talk about being ANAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I enjoy the food at Waffle House, but could not have choked it down after the way I was treated tonight.

Just wanted to add my comments while they were fresh.

You ever see how they flip eggs at the WH? That's were I learned to do it (flip the eggs that is).

Good Lord, I was looking for the UALR lost reciept web site and found yours. I think we have WAY too much time on our hands! ACK!

    Have a good summer,
    C

anyway to the point..my name is Anji, I work nights at waffle house #732 in Charleston SC, and one of our regulars that comes in, we call the napkin eater. he comes in 2x every shift,he talks to him self and yells at people that aren't there, well he pretty much stays to him self but one day he got really mad and said that my friend jackie posioned his tea, and then he gets on the phone and says he's calling the white house and tells them that we're killing people her and that he saw jackie killing someone w/ a butter knife i think that was the same day that jackie played "there are rasin toast" 30 times in a row in the jukebox.....no lie

Never had a bad experience in a single store in ten years until I stopped in the first unit North bound in Chesne, South Carolina. That unit will soon shut down the entire chain if it continues to operate with the crew there at 2:00 a.m., 19July99.

Probably, we should have looked for the next store when we had to leap an open sewage ditch to get from the parking area to the front door.

The unfortunate black guy who had been there close to a hour waiting for a take out order should have been the second clue to move on, but we assumed that was some sort of an endemic racial thing.

When the manager waited on us and got our order wrong three times before piece mealing it to the booth one item at a time over the next twenty minutes, we were forgiving because of the hour and the rather crowded conditions.

However, when leaving, we discovered the reason for the crowd keeping us from getting back on the road swiftly was the back-up of people waiting at the register to pay whom only the manager could accomodate when she was whistled down while racing past the waiting line. Her average mistake in ringing up the tickets was about 2.5 (she actually got a couple right on the first try).

I hoped I could contact the chain offices directly, but you seem to be the only available link that might have a connection to them, though you state you have no direct contact. Maybe you'll try since the attention you draw could be of interest to them. Those poor unfortunates working in that store, I have decided, would not make suitable road ballast on the highways leading to what I considered the most consistent food service I've ever encountered in my extensive road travels through this country.

Just discovered your site- it is great!. A lot of people who have had to leave the South are of course desperate to have Waffle Houses up north. My advice to Bert or whoever runs the company is- although it seems tempting, DON'T DO IT!

Why? Number one, it's a mystique thing. How many companies in America have a devoted following like this? Not many. If you recall, Coors used to, when they were only available out west. People drove & flew out there just to get Coors- they even made a movie about it (Smoky & the Bandit). Now Coors is everywhere, and you know what- they're just another beer on the shelf. Maybe Coors is better off this way, but there's something to be said for being a really unique American institution- just ask Harley-Davidson.

Besides, do you really want to go somewhere where people don't even have enough sense to know about grits?

    Good News!!!!!!
For Waffle House lovers in the Northeast, a Waffle House is now open in Elkton, Maryland off I-95. Elkton is halfway between Philly and Baltimore. The Northern Invasion has begun!!! Now, they must go to the Pittsburgh area where I live.

Hello, I am a waitress at a Waffle House in LaGrange GA. For the past 7 years, we have had our own Waffle House pet, a stray dog, named Pouncer. In the time that she has taken up at our Waffle House, she has been cared for by the staff and the customers. She has been fed like a queen, and even had her first litter at the residence of one of our waitresses. Pouncer is a shy dog, she won't come up to any of the waitresess, much less our customers. Our paper, "LaGrange Daily News" recently ran a first page article on our dog, Pouncer, to bring awareness. However, the City of LaGrange, is trying to take our dog away. If you are interested in helping our dog, stay "our Waffle House" dog, please contact LaGrange daily news or myself at zoestarr@hotmail.com or LaGrangeDailyNews.com thank you for your support.

I am a District Manager for Waffle House. I was getting ready to start my masters degree in Political Science at Georgia State University in March of 1996, when I ran into a Area Manager who knew my father-in law. He asked me what I wanted to do with my life and I told him I wanted to make alot of money and retire at an early age. He told me to come work with him at the Waffle House and I could retire a millionaire. After considering all of his smooth talking I decided to give it a shot. Well guess what? He was not kidding. In my first year I made 45,000, and I put away 10% into profit sharing. It's now 3 years later, I have 3 stores, it is the middle of June, and by the middle of July I will have already made that same amount. If you want to work hard, make lots and lots of money, then come work for us. I don't know too many people who are making 80,000 to 90,000 dollars a year 3 years out of college. I have given up some fun times with friends and family to earn this kind of money, but guess what? in 20 years, when other people are worried about their pensions, I will be looking at retirement with over a million in stock. Just some food for thought. If you want to make lots of money go into your local Waffle House and talk to the Manager. We are looking for Quality, not Quantity.

    Kevin

Hey, where's my Waffle House? I grew up in Ohio w/WH's in Troy,Englewood, & Dayton. I loved to go there. Then we move to some remote corner of the continent called Nebraska. These people only know PizzaHut, BurgerKing, & chinese food. (You can find any one of the three in any town with 300 or more people - that's a large town by the way). Why I'd drive 200 miles or more if there was a Waffle House somewhere within 2 states away. We live in the middle of cow country & you can't get a decent piece of meat that you don't have to beat to death & chew on like bubble gum. Milk costs $2.59 gallon. I was spoiled in Ohio. How about getting one in Omaha or Lincoln. I still dream of Waffles & Steak, within driving distance. I only get back to Ohio every 2-3 years. That's mighty long time to wait. Maybe one will blow across 2 borders from Oklahoma? I'll bet if you put one here, you'd have more money than Harvey's Casino.

I'm such a regular with my friend Cassie, that now the grill boy gives us complimentary hashbrowns sometimes! Cool, huh?!!! You can't beat MY regular: chocolate pie and coffee! $2.60 every time!!!! Woohoo!!!

I'm a Waffle House manager from the Atlanta area, and I think its great that there are so many people who love the Waffle House as I do. I've been with Waffle House since I was sixteen, and just hit my ten year anniversary. I started out washing dishes and now I'm a manage making close to 50 grand a year. Who could ask for anything more?

But believe me when I tell you that not all Waffle Houses are alike. I've worked in three Waffle Houses on a regular basis, and I've been in literally hundreds of Waffle Houses and I've seen great Waffle Houses and awful Waffle Houses. As our corporate statement says: "People make the difference." Thanks to all the great customers who visit us every day(andsometimes three or four times a day!), and keep coming in. Its a pleasure to serve you. Also, watch for an article in Sunday, June 13th's Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Dixie Living section. There will be an article on my Waffle House. I'll leave you with the motto of Waffle House University: "Woo Hoo!!!"

i have always wanted to work at waffle house - i can remember when i graduated from high school 12 years ago how i would ride my bike to the nearest waffle house and plead with the manager for a job - well i finally got hired last week - now i am so happy - bot i really feel like i accomplished something finally in my life.....boy oh boy. thank you waffle house for such a bright future of flippin egg's.

P.S. bart lee....i saw a storey from a pregnant wife in here - maybe you can look her up.....

At the corner of Busch and Florida in Tampa, Florida stands a WH. Next to the store is a rarely used railroad track. When eating there one time I noticed a freight train stop next to the Waffle House, the crew got out, disabled the crossing gates (which were down), then proceeded to the WH and had dinner. After a fine meal, they went back to their train, restored the gates to their down position, and went along their merry way. The waitress said that they are the only train that uses the tracks nowadays and they stop by often. I thought it was very cool.

We have a chain of restuarants known as the Country Waffles in California. Most are located in Northern California. We operate 22 stores. We love your humor.

    Hi
My boyfriend and I love Waffle House too! When we went to Fl. We stopped at everyone we saw-believe me there were a lot. We are going to get married in Waffle House. Elvis is going to marry us. You are invited. Bring all your friends. This is not a joke.

My name is Jimmy, and I work at Unit #236 in Houston,TX. Ou rfranchise is owned and Operated by Texas Coast Waffles Inc. Larry Cannon is our president, and the coolest owner possible. Any ways, I am a Master Grill Operator, and have been working there since I turnrd 16, now I am 19, and will be leaving soon to go into the Navy. Every person once in their lifetime should go, and see what we are all about. To this day, people still ask me how we do it, How we memorize them orders. Well their is no secret to it. Everyone that goes in to a Waffle House will see a bunch of plates on the Cook boards with mustard, ketchup, butter, and pickles on them. That is called the ever so famous "Marker System"!!! Believe me it works out alot, and is less stress on the brain. I was reading these things earlier, and I saw our assistant manager's passage. Larry Cannon does not have 10 stores, he now has 12, and soon to be 13.

    Happy Overdose
    Jimmy

4/8/99. Up at 4:00 am. Out to the office. No coffee. Where else to go but WH? Hillsborough Road. Durham. NC. A gravel voiced evangelist. Two xl waitresses (one conferring with her boyfriend in a two-up booth; one listening to her walkman and reading a book while carrying on a conversation with the evangelist and a couple of other hangers-on at the end of the counter.) Cook is cleaning the griddle. One other patron at the counter in his camo overalls waiting for take out. The counter is strewn from left to right with receipts, magazines, newspaper parts, napkins, glasses of warm ice tea, condiments, traces and/or remains of numerous breakfasts. I sit down gingerly placing my reading matter on a napkin. As I try to wipe off the counter (no one else seems to be interested in this task), the lone order taker (very nice person, but I believe he was some sort of "special hire") comes up to take my order. Waffle. Bacon. Large Glass of Milk. Honey or syrup? Syrup container lands on the counter. I pick it up and there is a puddle on the orange laminate. I love this place. I read S&P reports while the evangelist intones in his gravel voice, the cook is working to try to clean the place, the conferring waittress continues to confer, and the music loving waittress loudly discusses something totally incomprehensible (to me) while reading her book and giving orders to the "special hire".

I ask for a large cup of coffee to go (I like the coffee - I am not sure it is the best in the world), and music lover says there are no large cups if they are not in the cup holder. "Special hire" pulls out a cup from below the counter and she points out that it is a small - not a large. When he asks how much is the small, she says its a refill, so he does not have to charge me. (Try that at mcd's! - you know they count the cups). I pay for my breakfast. $5.05. Hand a dollar tip to the special hire, and ask him to do everyone a favor and clean the counter.

While walking out I think by golly I ought to go to the Waffle House web site and email them about this travesty of a Waffle House in my home town. Then I find your site, read every single entry (laughing out loud all the way down!) and realize why I love the place. (Please do not post my email address!) Jim in Durham. Keep up the site - you are performing a great service to humanity?

Well, Well, Well What an introduction to Law Enforcement Alabama style. As a new resident to this fair state of yours, i had the missfortune of becoming involved with your local constabulary,on Saturday night the 3rd of April last ,my partner and i went to eat at the waffle house (up untill now one of the treasures i have found in this country of yours) they were fairly busy in there, but they usually are ,2 seats were available at the bar, so we seated ourselves there, after waiting 10 minutes, I intterupted a passing waitress and asked if we could have some coffee, this was no problem, and the coffee was poured with a frown ,and a "i'll get your order in a minute, well time passed ,and passed ,and no order taking was forthcoming, even after eyeballing the waitress several times, all i could get was a frown, the cook didnt seem that busy on his hot plate so after 20 minutes enough was enough and i said to my partner ,lets get out of here and find another place to eat at.

So up we got and left, no sooner had we got outside and the "very busy" cook came running outside saying "hey you aint paid for ya coffee" i answered saying that i had no intention of paying for the coffee because of the POOR service and that i was a very regular customer at that store since moving here from Australia, He mumbled something under his breath and went back inside. So we started to head down along highway 31 when the next minute we are being pursued by not 1 police car, not 2 police cars ,but 3 police cars , my partner pulled over and the constable came up to her window and said to her " I believe you left the waffle house without paying for 2 cups of coffee" at which she answered "yes thats right the service was so bad waiting over 20 mins we left" he gave no answer to this, and asked her to step outside the car, he then asked her to go back to the waffle house and pay the bill ( private enterprise using city police to collect debts "only in America ") she then gave him $2 and asked him if he would do it for him (all part of the service i guess) he pocketed the money and off we all went.

Well this poses several questions that should be of concern to citizens of this City.

    1. Who is out catching the bad guys, the rapist, the muggers, the murderers ,the drunk drivers ect ect when Vestavia's finest is hunting down (in packs) coffee theives , and collecting money from them.

    2. Why was Vestavia's police so quick to react to a request from the waffle house, and found it nessasary to send 3 police cars on this assignment, could this be the bottom of the ladder of graft and corruption in this citys police force, (nothing like being in the good books of the local waffle house for free feeds i guess) maybe thats why 3 police cars took up this job , eggs & waffles for all hey.

    3. You would have to be concerned that a police officer would take $2 off a citizen, then not issue a reciept, is there a cut off point as to how much the officer would accept, what are the guidelines, and the questions can go on an on i guess, maybe all this is standard practice here and i am making alot out of nothing, but what i do know is that if this had happened back in Australia where i am from, ie a dispute between a private company and a customer it is a civil matter not a police matter. Had Australian police officers reacted the same way as there counterparts here, there would of been immediate action,Yes, by the commisioner, all police officers would have been stood down impending an investigation into wasted police money's and time. Why money was taken from the citizen.and so on.

In closing i would like to say, at home all we read and see on Television about this Country is crime , drugs , and violence and now experiencing first hand i can see why this is so, Well Vestavia's finest go get them coffee theives and get them checks paid at all costs OK

    yours

Hey just stopped by your page . My name is Mike Cobb and I live in Ohio. Ive been collecting commemorative Coca-Cola bottles for the past 8 years and I heard about a Coca-Cola bottle that was produced with the Wafflehouse logo on it. Have you heard anything about it ? I was looking to get one for my collection, could you guys give me a clue in where I might be able to get one of the bottles. Since 1995 I think they have made 3 different ones. Hope you can help. Thanks.

You know, I just finished enjoying an afternoon breakfast at the WH in Ft. Lauderdale, the only one in this part of Fla. I think. When I got home, I had a few minutes to kill so thought I'd look on the web for Waffle House. Well, I didn't find a company site, but I did find "The Waffle House Shrine" and some other Waffle House pages.

I was totally amazed when, almost at the bottom of the page, I spotted the WH picture sent in by "James." That's the WH where I just ate. Honest. Now, I know all WH's look similar... OK, they're all practically identical, but this one is sandwiched between a Holiday Inn and a Red Roof Inn on Powerline Road in Ft. Lauderdale and I've eaten there many times. Why, even the dumpsters and newspaper boxes are in the right places. In the background, you can also see an elevated portion of I-95.

    Keep up the good work.
    Dave

Unbeknownst to most people most Waffle House waitresses were dancers...well in a weird sort of way.

I have a pic from a Waffle House in Spartanburg, SC where we got the waitress to do a few pirouettes. Thought it might be humorous on your site.

It all started on The Wagner HS Marching band trip to Florida. On the way down from NY(no waffle Houses there) on a 22-hour bus ride, we had nothing better to do than count Waffle Houses (sorry I dont remember the official count). At some point somebody clapped when we passed one. Pretty soon everyone wuz clappin and we kept doing it every time we saw one for the rest of the ride, and the rest of the week for that matter. Even when we got back to New York, we kept clapping for the waffle houses.

P.S.: WAFFLE HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap)

Before 1997, I had never known what a Waffle House was. When i Came to college i soon found out that hashbrowns are a new food group. This was my main substanance while i was pledging to my fraternity, because during the day I was busy. So I always found some love from the staff at the "W". They are always willing to put that smile on your face and that grin of satisfaction as you walk out full and pleased. One question though??. Has anyone ever marketed Waffle House clothes?? Shirts, bandanas, boxers. I think its a goldmine waiting to be struck.

thanks for YOUR continued devotion to the "house". As i tell my work colleagues who turn their nose up or shake their heads over my menu wallpaper, it's the charm of the place, maybe someday when you grow up you'll understand.

by the way, blue devils rule!!

    Hello,
My girlfriend and I fell in love and then we fell in love again with the Waffles at the Waffle House. I am looking for the nearest Waffle House. I live in Minneapolis Minnesota. I would greatly appreciate if you could tell me the location of the nearest Waffle House.

    Jeffrey

My husband and I just got back from Naples, Florida. We counted all the Waffle Houses we could see from the highway. There are seventy-nine in all, all along I-75.

We started in Naples, Florida, drove 677 miles and saw 42 Waffle Houses along I-75 until we stopped for the night in Calhoun, Georgia. This works out to be one Waffle House for every 16.12 miles. Isn't that great? You want greater yet? That works out to one Waffle house every three to four minutes if you're driving 60 miles an hour. Of course, you know that. You're a math major.

Just thought I'd let you know about a little something to look forward to the next time you endure the dull scenery of I-75!

I work in tech support and one of customers is Waffle House. They purchased some software of ours. As I usually do I asked for some free stuff. The nice lady sent me a T-shirt that said:

    Front:
    Waffle house.
    Great place to eat
    Great place to work.

    Back:
    Hash browns come
    Scattered
    Smothered etc etc....

Someone broke into my car and stole the shirt.

If you see this shirt anywhere please immediately club the person and take the shirt. I can be contacted at this email address.

Waffle house doesn't make the shirts anymore and I had to jump through hoops to get the shirt.

Hey, I was thrilled to find your WAFFLE HOUSE Website. My nearest Waffle House is about 30 miles away but I get there as often as possible to get the world-famous pecan waffle. I really don't think anything tastes better. I also make an annual trip to Fan Fair in Nashville and the Waffle House is always my first stop.

I did have an unusual experience last summer in Louisville, Ky. I had left home at 2 a.m. and was pretty worn by the time I reached the Waffle House at 6:30 a.m. To my dismay, the waitress informed me that the grill was closed! I questioned why the grill was closed at prime time for breakfast. She mumbled something about having to clean it sometime. However, my persistence did prevail and, after finding out the waffles do not require a grill, she did convince the cook to prepare my waffle.

    Nice talking to you guys

Hi! I think the waffle house is the greatest place on earth! This summer, I was in Arkansas with my cousins, and we went to WH at around 11 pm. The food was wonderful, and we met what may be the only goths in Arkansas. I think a WH should be in the Smithsonian as a shrine to America. DYK in my city, you can make reservations at WH. Thats all...

I caught your web shrine on the Waffle House. I recently took a cross-country trip LA to Jacksonville on I-10. Then up I-95 to Boston. I relished every moment I spent in the last vestage of American Diner Culture left among the fast food gut wreckers. I have photos, and souviners of the Waffle House. I plan to make a white china coffee cup with the circular blue ribbon logo of the great Waffle House Coffee fire glazed into the cup. (That is unless I can buy one from Waffle House). We stopped at approximately 22 Waffle House restraunts. The southern route was the best. The closest Waffle House to us is in Phoenix, Az., a days drive.

I am located in So. california. Take care.

hi. i recently stopped at a waffle house in roanoke, va. and really studied the jukebox for the first time at any waffle house. i was surprised to see that the whole first column of selections were songs about the waffle house. we played one called "special lady at the waffle house." i can't remember who sang it, but if you have any idea how i can get my hands on a copy of that song, i would be forever grateful. thanks.

I have a different answer to your question than what is posted on the site ... though I'm not sure which is the most 'factual' ...

In the event of a robbery, Waffle House managers & staff are to call the police and lock the doors until they arrive. (after fully cooperating with the robber of course)

I've also been told by WH managers that on the RARE occasion that a WH closes temporarily because of a natural disaster or fire they would need to lock the doors.

    Makes sense to me ....

    Hi....

I'm writing from a small principality in the U.K called Wales. For the last two years my Family and I have holidayed in Florida. We were told that the best place to eat was The Ponderosa, so we gave it a try. After two or three mornings we decided to try a place called Waffle House, what a revelation! The food was, and is terrific it knocked the spots of every other restuarant we went to. My favourite was double cheese omlette scattered and smothered with double hashbrowns. My Wife and Daughter always had Cheese, egg and ham sandwich with hasbrowns. The coffee is without doubt the best coffee I have ever tasted in My life. The service was always first class and the smell in the restuarant was always superb. We returned to the same Waffle house on the 192 every day at least once. And miss their food very much. you are very lucky in the USA to have the greatest restuarant in the WORLD!!!!!! And that includes all the flash expensive resturants in Disneyworld. Lets hope there are plans to open a few in the UK very soon. This year we won't be in your country OH how we will miss WAFFLE HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    YOURS SINCERELY CLIVE RADDENBERRY

Great Site! I feel obliged to offer my Waffle House story . . . No place like the Waffle House to instill a sense of the Yuletide spirit: Being an undergrad, I tend to put a high level of stress on my final exams. One morning, stressed about a final only two or three hours away, my friend and I went to Waffle House to get some early morning breakfast, fuel ourselves with "the best coffee in America", and maybe do a little last minute studying. Our waitress, Hillbilly, (no kidding, that's what her nametag says!), was extra nice to us, probably due to our ragged appearance. She brought us our waffles and was always forthcoming with freshly brewed joe; we never saw the bottom of our mugs. And when it was time to go and face the executioner (so to speak), we asked for our check as we readied ourselves for departure. She just smiled and told us to have a Merry Christmas. Ignoring our protests, she chatted for a while, and we left bidding her an equally merry holiday season. As we were getting in my car, we saw her pull a few bucks from her apron and pay our ticket. Needless to say, I faced the exam full of warm thoughts (not to mention full of their high-octane coffee) and recieved an A. The next time we went, Hillybilly was again our waitress and we were sure to tip her an extra couple of bucks. But how do you tip the woman responsible for singlehandedly salvaging a struggling grade point average? High praise to Waffle House in Monteagle, TN, and particuarly high praise to its veritable matron, Hillbilly!

While driving back from the state of Michigan after the Christmas holiday I stopped at a Waffle House of I-75 in Kentucky. There I saw a beautiful woman who took my order. (a rarity) She was about 5ft tall blue eyes short blond hair maybe about 120lbs and really nice and big chest. She and I talked while I had my double pattymelt and scattered and smothered hasbrowns.

I was the only one in the place with her and the grill operator. I must have had 4 or five sweet teas just talking to her. Since I had to be back home in Atlanta I had to go. I think about Tasha and wonder what may have happened. I just wish I had taken the time to see what exit the place was on.....

This is a story about Wa Ho Love. I met my boyfriend in a Waffle House in Georgia, my home state. I was engaged at the time after a short 5 month relationship. My brother worked as a first class grill operator with Brandon. I had always bummer around Wa Ho's anywhere and everywhere but I had never noticed Brandon before. I walked in and saw him. The manager offered me a job while Brandon tried to make small talk. When I left with my brother, I left with an application. My brother had told me that Brandon thought I was cute and liked me very much but he also reminded me that I was engaged. I took the job as a second shift waitress. My first night off training, I worked with Brandon and recieved the full hell of initiation mixed in with a little bit of puppy love flirting. I left that night with hashbrowns in my hair and a crush on Brandon, keep in mind I was still engaged. A week later, I was working second, and he was working third, but as he often did, he sat up there on my shift. It was my last night working before I left for vacation. My fiance was supposed to pick me up and take me to my friends house but called to say he couldn't then got mad because I couldn't waste an hour of time to go see him. I was upset, so upset, I lost my Waffle House smile that racks in the tips! Well, Brandon saw this and left. He came back with two roses- hoping to see my smile. I went on that vacation and thought of him every moment. When i got back, I was still engaged. Brandon had asked me if I wanted to go see a movie, just as friends. I went and had the time of my life. I had fallen in true love with him. That night I broke off my enagement and started a realtionship with that boy I met in the Waffle House. Brandon and I have been together almost a year now and we spend more time in that Waffle House then we do anywhere else. People say we'll be married in a Wa Ho. Sounds like a good idea! :)

The poster recently e-mailed me an unfortunate update:

The story of Wa Ho love, did not end happily. Brandon and I broke up, but on good terms, now he's one of my best friends and I am going back to work at another Waffle House.

Hello, My Name is Fred, I'm a waiter at Store # 2 in Columbia, SC (I-26 & Hwy 302)(the exit for Columbia Airport). I am very proud to see a site like this. It's always great to pull up your site and read these "WAFFLE HOUSE" stories.

    Thanks,
    Fred

SEE YOU AT THE WAFFLE HOUSE!

You have great content on this web page, the in depth details are the best and the appearance is nice. Way to waffle the competition.

Here is my story. I have the newest Waffle House in the Chain just 5 minutes from my house. Its grand opening was 28 November 1998, and the best part of it was that they had smothered, chili, scattered, chunked, peppered hashbrowns for $0.99. Whoo. It was great, I had 2 orders and then had to gobble the 14oz porterhouse to top it off. By the way, did I mention the smooth, creamy, sweet pecan waffle I enjoyed. It was a brown orb of a waffle, cooked just right, with maple syrup and smooth, creamy "I can't believe it's not butter". I am just thankful that Fabio wasn't my waiter, but my waitress Flo (no kidding) did lick the syrup off of her hand, after she sloshed it off of my plate. Yummee. Wait! "Lets go to Waffle House, to Waffle House, Lets all go to Waffle House and have ourselves a trip........" I couldn't leave without those precious words from the jukebox in my newest, closest, favorite Waffle House of all time.

    Timothy

My highschool debate team loves Waffle House! On tournament weekends, you'll find lots of debators there!

We were just reading this page on WH b/c our friend from Virginia always talks about how great it is. We live in New York. We havent seen nor heard of a WH before she told us about it. Is there any one by us? It sounds rather enticing. Actually, it sounds kind of funny. if we went there we'd probably laugh at everyone. Is there really drunk people there? If there is, we would like to meet them.

    From Jackie and Daphne

I'm a debater at a high school in the suburbs of Atlanta. We love Waho. Before, during, and after every tournament, we have to go to Waho to reap the fruits of the Waffle House harvest... Coffee with enough sugar to kill a horse, those great waffles, golden-brown hashbrowns (scattered-smothered- covered), grits, bacon... You name it, we eat it. The table is always sagging and, of course, we're well-known for our 30%+ tips. My favorite Waho memory is going at 3 a.m. in Calhoun, Georgia. I was with all of my friends, and we hadn't eaten anything in many hours. I sat in a booth next to the guy I liked, and, six waffles, three orders of double- hashbrowns, eight glasses of water, four cups of coffee, two omelets, and seven "Waffle-House Do-Wops" and a a "Margaritaville" later, we (me and the guy I liked and the two other debate friends) paid our relatively small bills and talked fungibility. It was great. Me and the guy I liked and Waho. A match made in heaven.

Ok. Well my first Waffle House experience happened last night with my Dad coming back from a two day golf school in Ft. Lauderdale to Merritt Island, Fl. While I was trying to sleep in a very crowded backseat, my father yelled out, "Mexican food or Waffles?!" Since I never know what to order in a Mexican restaurant and thinking that the waffle thing was a joke, (you know the South Park when the go to Kenny's house for dinner and have waffles...), I yelled back in pain, WAFFLES!! No joke, pulled up to a Waffle House about 10 minutes later. After parking in 1 of the six available spots, we noticed several fat people inside. I explained this was a good thing since anyplace with fat people must be good. And we shouldn't have a problem fitting through the doors since we were hunched over and both leaning to the left with pain.

The first thing we noticed, besides all the yelling, was a very wet barstool, under a waterfall that made Niagara Falls look like a leaky faucet. All the booths were either taken or had used eating utensils, tips included, so we sat at the end one and faced the wall to ensure our food would be edible.. Since it was a long trip, we had to use the facilities. I had to steal toilet paper from the men's bathroom, sterilize the seat and not breathe for 85 seconds. (I'm pretty fast when I have to be). After washing my hands, there was soap but probably very old, I walked out of there like a doctor going into surgery not wanting to touch anything.

I ordered a plain waffle. My dad & Harriett had the pecan waffle and sausage/bacon. He's frequented this place several times before and took the seat facing the restaurant...

Anyway, to get to my point and start a paragraph that you might read. I was looking at the menu and noticed that they can prepare a burger "844,739 ways". Now my Dad is a very brilliant and I knew if I asked him to, he could calculate this for me. My dad said no way in 2 seconds. He said between any combination of ingredients must create a number that is an exponential power of 2. And since the number ended in a 9, it must be false. The closest it could be would be 524,288 which would be from 19 ingredients. The next possibility would be 1,048,576 if there were 20 ingredients. QED. Since I assume you are a resident of Duke according to your email address, you should be able to verify this with your math professor.

All in all, we loved the experience. When we finished our meal, we were even more delighted to find a van parked outside, with more fat people, eating boxes of the stuff. Made us wish there were a Krispy Kreme right next door....

If you could please explain the discrepancy using your high level Waffle House contacts, that would ease our minds. We are keeping an open mind in hopes that we can build an incredible culinary society on honesty.

    Thanks for your help.
    Kim

A-ha! You would have never guessed it, but actually I'm a math major, so you've lucked out. You're dad is right, but I've never had the heart to bring it to the attention of the waffle house. If you consider only "number of ingredients" as the measue of the ways to fix a burger, then they must means something like 524,288 or such. However, remember that any burger can be coooked either rare, medium rare, medium, medium-well, and well-done (5 possibilities, and it cannot be a combination), so it doesn't have to be strictly a power of 2. Also, they could consider the difference between putting 0, 1, or 2 pickles on it, which gives three mutually exclusive combinations. Right there, the number of ways could be a multiple of 15. When it comes down to it, though, there is either ketchup or no ketchup, so the number of ways MUST BE an even number, although it does not have to be a power of 2 (because neither 5 nor 3 is a power of 2).

if ever on St.simons Island GA or in the area there is the best waffle house that i have witnessed in my considerable waffle experiance. it is a holy place . St Simons is a vacation destination and last call for all bars is 2 am i believe, all i know is that at somepoint while enjoying my standard pattymelt, browns done well, sent to hell , while nursing my coffee the joint will fill to the brim with drunk rednecks AND sophisticated young Atlantans, all drunk as piss, and it is all poor Stephanie and Sheila and Tim (aka. BOSSMAN) can do to keep the place under control. let me pause here....a moment of silance please.... I mourn the passing of ROY....the coolest damn cook i have met. ROY was born in europe, grew up North Carolina and in Florida, and toiled with satisfaction for 12 years as cook and manager. a little bugeyed...not bugeyed....wild eyed to a degree....though he isnt that big of a guy You WOULDN'T mess with him. the first time i met him he seemed sharp...inteligent....but not all that intresting. you couldent really miss the sharp, inteligent look in his eye. a former marine, and, so as no to blow his cover i will only say that he serves on the goodside of the law in an exciting capacity, somthing of a P.I. as in MAGNUM. stories of hot rods, encounters with the police, loaded .38s in fearful situations, stories so wild you try not to believe for feeling stupid, yet the man, the LEGEND is real.

advice givin to me upon the anguish upon my discovery of betrayal involving good friend and my girl.... Keep your friends close, keep your eniemies closer

maybe a little hard, but that is the way it was, and Roy left waffle this past summer and works at LIL'CHAMP gas station 1 block down the road. i will miss his hash browns and stories from accross the table as he had coffee with me.

but back to the place as it is....well Sheila is good, but i am really just partial to Stephenie.....now that woman is a waitress....my coffee cup never goes below halfway, allways milk, always sugar, the trash never builds up, the plates are cleared upon ingesting that marvelous food....cooked by "BOSSMAN" TIM, a quiet man who unexpectedly will blurt out somthing to make you wetyourself....i suspect that he has ingested his share of LCD, but he is a really great guy....now i would prefer ROY, but hell, BOSSMAN is a real good sub. so to any one who can, go to the ST.SIMONS waffle house, sit in Stephnies section and mention that WES sent you and you will be setting yourself up for a royal WAFFLE experiance.

We found out about Waffle House when my husband (before he was my husband) moved to Norcross. You know, Atlanta is the most perfect place for a WH addict to live because of their abundance. If you go to one and it's crowded, usually all you need to do is stay on that same road and go over the interstate, and there sits another conveniently located Waffle House. Hopefully that one isn't as full! We lived in San Antonio for a while, so we were having some major WH withdrawals. Eating there was one of our few rewards while making the 1600 mile drive to visit our families in PA. We just moved to Virginia a few months ago, and imagine how thrilled we were to find a Waffle House about 15 miles down the interstate. We added that to our list of advantages to living here. I have several fond memories of individual moments at WH.... my first time, after taking our daughter to see Beauty and the Beast on Ice, my last visit before moving to Texas, the one in South Carolina somewhere where my daughter lost her Rafiki (from Lion King) doll, the one in Kentucky somewhere that I talked to someone who was telling us stories (prompted by my daughter's Stellaluna stuffed toy) about the bats that were trying to eat her kids (too funny!).... We recently took our youngest daughter there for the first time. It was a shame that she had to be almost one before enjoying her first waffle. Better late than never though....so to those of you who have never been there or who have relatives who have never been there, don't wait a moment more! They deserve the Waffle House!

    Stacey

    Wafflehouse is the best!
1 night we were trashed(is that a requirement to visit Wafflehouse?)and showe up about 5 am . Some joking turned in to more joking next thing i knew i poured a handful of syrup and slammed it across my friend's face , silk shirt and leather jacket and let me say wafflehouse is the only place you can get away with that without getting tossed or in a fight, anyway Rodney deserved it. Anyway has anyone else been allowed to bring beer in to wafflehouse and drink it? Wonderful policy it would be, Wafflehouse is the place for me!

    Eric

i truly enjoyed your waffle house page... i work in one of ten (i think) here in the houston area, in the fine town of Laport ,TX. The stores here are franchise owned by Larry Cannon. A list of the stores are as follows:

Hi! I am a poor soul that has never relished the awesome Waffle House! :( I have been to one but was pregnant and still in the morning sickness stage. My husband however loves waffle house. The one time I did go to waffle house was very special to me (even though I was yacking and unable to eat) seeing the joy in my husbands eyes as the waitress shouted his order and the sheer joy and delight as he ate his hashbrowns was a memory I will have embedded in my mind forever!

I am hoping that I too will be able to enjoy a Waffle House soon!

My family drove to Florida last month, and I had my first Waffle House experience in Georgia. I was permanently hooked. I ate at Waffle Houses every day until my return to my unfortunately WH-less home state of Pennsylvania. I have been craving Waffle House since we left Virginia. I am 18 now, attending a Pennsylvania college, and I am seriously considering a transfer to anyplace that has a nearby WH. When the cravings get too awful to be borne, I just look at the picture of myself in front of a North Carolina Waffle House and remember...

Sara (who has had no waffles for over three weeks)

Hi! I'm writing to tell you I absolutely love the site. I never knew they're were other people out there that loved the only place Purely American.

My friends and I are obsessed with Waffle Houses. See, last year we went to a Jr. Beta convention (yes, we're starting out young!), and eveyrone wanted to eat ate McDonalds for breakfast. I said "Now way, yo. We're going to Waffle House in the morning." Surprisingly some of them had never eaten at one. Of course, they loved it. Aside from it being the closest thing to a coffeehouse in Alabama, its a great place to talk to strangers, see a timeless institution, and the Pecan Waffles are magnificent! It is now the official hang-out for The Beatniks (our group's name ::shrugs::) and we've all decided to work there next year.

If you want a heart-warming story about the place, my friend Sara had one after a Smashing Pumpkins concert with her buds. I'll try to get that story to you...really quite...well "smashing".

Everytime we take a road trip we count the number of waffle houses!! It is the only thing that keeps us awake in the middle of Tenessee and Kentucky in the middle of the night!! Where is the closest one to Milwaukee Wisonsin ??

We believe that Waffle House and Huddle House are brothers and Omlette Shoppe is their cousin. Waffle King must be their grandfather and the Steak and Shake's are also distant relatives!

    We Love Waffle House !

I think the Waffle House is the best place on earth. I live in north eastern New Jersey and there is on Waffle House where I live. That sucks. The last time I bin there is when I was 15. That was four years ago. I dont know why they dont build one here. That place is the best. Tell me if you know any locations around here.

    Eric

Hey! I can not believe that there is actually a page for this. I am in shock. I love Waffle House more than you'll ever know. I live in Long Island, New York and travel a few times a year. The first time I ever had WH hashbrowns, I was in love. Just the way they call the order is an art form..."Extra large...scattered, smothered, well" I don't know what the hell it means, or where you go to school to learn it...but they are the best things I have ever tasted. From the waffles to the homemade Cherry Coke...I pray for this incredible establishment to move north! I have a menu on my wall, and my favorite WH paper chef's hat sits in my kitchen. How far up is the northern most House? It will be well worth the trip.

Cannot believe all the Waffle House nuts out there. I to am a WH craver. We drive 150 miles to Indpls, In to satisfy my cravings. Highway 30 and I65 would make a great location and only 14 miles away. I dream about Cheese Omlets and those fully covered potatoes. So glad I found this site, even if I can't get any food, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Our romance began in Waynesville, Missouri while at Ft Lost in the Woods for our son's graduation. Nothing to do at night but to go to the Waffle House and watch them cook, clean & chat. Been hooked ever since. When available it's our breakfast and supper stop. Need one close soon!!!

    Nancy

hey mr. k, thank you very much for the waffle house shrine page. my wife and i went flew from las vegas, our home, to new orleans this year for mardi gras, then drove to st. augustine, florida to visit her two sons. we saw our first waffle house going east on 10, into georgia, and immediately stpped. it's a super great place, with waffle house music and great food, we must have visited 6-7 of them on our 10 day trip, and wish they were here in las vegas. thanks again for the web page, and to all the employees, thanks for making our stops so enjoyable,

    greg and yvonne

About two years ago on a trip to the Carolinas, I first stopped at a Waffle House. I loved the place. My father, brother, and myself made it a point to stop there at every meal. However, all good things must end, and we left the waffle house behind to go home to Michigan.

At school I made it a point to tell my friends that we needed a waffle house in the tri city area. This was a reply from one of them:

"We have an IHOP, it's good enough."

NO!!! IHOP (International House of Pancakes) is an upstart restaurant. They've also tried to take me to Denny's, it's no substitute, we need waffle houses in Michigan, I think we've lived in the dark ages for long enough!

I have eaten at many Waffle Houses along the interstate Highways. I live in Alexandria, Louisiana. It is halfway between Shreveport and Lafayette on I-49. It is a vibrant, growing city with a population of about 50,000 hungry people. It has a twin city, (Pineville), separated by the Red River. We have a big problem, however. No Waffle House !! There is not a Waffle House in Central Louisiana. We are being deprived. Is there anything you can do to resolve this problem ?

    Sincerely,
    Jack E. O'Neal

Do you know of any Waffle Houses in Pennsylvania, or are they only located in the states closest to Georgia? Any info you could give me on this would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, they are few and far between above the mason-dixon line.

"awful house" as some of us call it in mandeville, la. quickly became a great place to go once i enter high school. we frequented it after football games and as we were able to drive and go out more after (or before when i come to think of it) anything. it has always been there for me and i've come to love it dearly. long did i dream about late college nights/mornings spent at WH with the gang. however i chose to attend colorado school of mines in golden, co. when i went there for orientation all of the students said that there were no waffle houses in the area but i'd have to drive all the way to colorado springs (even more of a feat if, like me, you have no vehicle). i and some of my WH loving bud's at orientation were complaining and the colorado natives all laughed at us and thought we were strange (they also made fun of us for saying ya'll). so i spent many days and nights trying to psychologically prepare myself for 'no waffle house land' until today i looked up on yahoo and found out that there are 3 WH's within 22 miles of my campus and more if i want to drive further. i am now confident that i can muster up some of my friends with cars and convince them to go to WH, especially those who are being torn away from our WH scattered landscapes of the south. i can now survive college in the way it was meant to be. also after reading through all of the comments i was very surprised (noting the number of college kids who wrote in and attend WH regularly) that nobody ever mentioned how on the WH coffee cups there are integral signs encircling the cup in and infinitely long, beautiful integral of waffles and coffee. if there is anything i love it is a discussion on computers or, even better, calculus over coffee and anything on the WH menu. the atmosphere at WH is second to none. it blows away denny's or anything else that is open 24 hours (super wal-mart is tied but it's in a different category). thanks for listening to me.

    Bill

Hey man. How's it goin?...Good here.

Do you know of any good WH games? I read on here a few months ago about a man that plays the "Coffee Game." I can't find it now. I need to know the rules before my freinds and I can play. Sounded like fun. See, you get to drink lots of fresh coffee in this game...thought it would be fun.

    Would appreciate any input,
    Thanx,
    WaHo Lover

I was at the Waffle House in Kansas City, MO, and I was with a group of friends and we went into the bathroom and there was s*#& splattered all over the toilet. That resturant is now known as the Sh## Splatter Waffle House. One of my friends stuck his head in the toilet and took a picture of the sh## splatter. We then went back at 3 am for the All you Can Eat Meal and stayed till 6. I am also a fellow worshiper of the greatest resturant on earth. Waffle House 4 Life!

    The Samurai Chef

I've been to many different waffle houses across the country, and have enjoyed the time there, But when i think of Waffle House, I think of one person, whom I've had the pleasure of seeing him cook at several locations, Tampa, Colorado Springs, Arizona and now in St. Petersburg, Fl. I've watched him to amazement as he twirls plates, spins knives up in the air and snatches them back without even looking, putting on a show that all of his customers enjoy. Never in my life have i seen such a talented cook, He is a true artist. Why is he not running his own store?

    What's up?

...thought you might be interested in knowing, my girlfriend and I just drove from St. Louis Missouri to Gulfport Mississippi. To pass the time we wagered on whether there would be more Cracker Barrels or Wafflehouses along the highway. I won. Wafflehouse 18 Cracker Barrel 11. It was pretty close until we got to the gulf coast. There were 5 in a one mile stretch. She couldn't believe it!

    Peace and Waffles,
    Adam

Hi, I was just searching for any Waffle House info there might be on the internet and somehow was lucky enough to stumble onto this page. I live in Southern California, about an hour outside of L.A. and there are NO Waffle Houses near here. I used to live in Georgia, about 45 minutes outside of Atlanta, and there's nothing I miss more than good old Waffle House. It's the greatest in the world, and I sincerely feel for anyone that has never experienced the greatness. I tell ALL my friends and relatives about it, and say that if they ever come across one, they have to stop and eat there. I moved to Cali about 2 years ago, and haven't stop complaining about missing my Waffle House. No one else understands and think I'm crazy and wish I'd shutup. My family (mom, 20 yr old brother and 17 yr old sis) and I just recently took a road trip to Texas for a family reunion and before we even hit the road, I told my mom that we had to eat at Waffle House even if it was the only place we ever ate. I would've lived on it if I could. We did make it there, but all the way in Arizona, on the way home from our week and a half long trip. I was complaining the whole time to eat there, but I couldn't get her to stop. You can imagine how many fights we got into because of my yelling at her "If we don't find one before we get home...". There were so many in the cities we were at, but she would never stop. I'm glad there were some in Arizona, cuz she never would've heard the end of it, and I probably would've ended up getting into major trouble because I would've raised some major hell. I worship the Waffle House. I took a picture of me in front of this particular Waffle House that we finally got to stop at in Arizona. I will mail it to you later once we have a chance to develop the film. And I had to get a chocolate pie to go. I brought it back to Cali and had to share it with my boyfriend, so I could see the two sweetest things in life at the same time! It meant so much for my boyfriend to finally share Waffle House with me, and needless to say, he experienced the greatness for himself. He loved every bit of it. I wish, just like the rest of the faithful Waffle House goers, that one would open up somewhere near here, and I understand that it seems to be a Southern thing, with the grestest southern food, but I live in the southern part of the state, too. Why can't a Waffle House be opened up here? I wonder who determines where they are and aren't built. I don't see why they can't be like Denny's, one everywhere you turn. Waffle House is better than any and every one of them. I have never experienced Huddle House or whatever, I'd heard of it, but I've never had the least bit of interest in eating there. I miss WH soooo much. I have sooo many memories there. Sneaking out with the guys, going swimming in some apartment off-limits spa and swimming pool, then heading off to Waffle House to the bathroom to change, then to the jukebox, then to sit and finish drying while eating the best 2 o'clock AM meal I'd ever had. I miss those 1/4 lb cheeseburger plates and hashbrowns, which are better than any fries I could've had with the greatest burger in the world. I love it, I love it. More than words can say. I will travel to Arizona the next time I rack up enough money to make it just to go the nearest Waffle House. I'm soo glad I found this page. I love hearing about other people's stories and how I'm NOT the only one who knows that Waffle House is the BEST out there. THANKS so much.

    Love,
Rebekah Reilly (19 years old, alone dreaming of my next Waffle House visit)

Wow, I didn't know so many people were dedicated to the Waffle House! I am 16 years old, and live in Longwood, Florida. Every time we drive to Atlanta to see my grandparents, my sisters and I see who can spot the most Waffle House's on the way. My dad and I love the Waffle House, but my mom and sisters just don't appreciate the restaurant. I love how they never close, and can cook your meal any way you want. Waffle House is truly America's place to eat and work. If I ever become rich, I hope to one day own a Waffle House, or maybe start a new one!

I have worked at unit #818 in Spartanburg, south carolina for the past four years.

    - nothing can be compared to the wonderful people I work with on 3rd shift and the wonderful friendships I have made with my customers.

Everyone is always friendly and willing to help each other at a moments notice. I recommend waffle house to anyone especially to the parents of all the young kids that hang out there during the wee hours of the night. - - -( Don't worry we take care of them and watch them like they are our own)

If ya'll are ever down I-26 in sc stop by and say hey - - It's always great to learn a new face.

    Heather

I love going to waffle house. Me and my friends go there a lot. After my high school prom me and a bunch of my friends when there just to hang out and talk and eat. Waffle house to me is like a second home.

My name is Iggy and I try to go to every Waffle House I see. One of my goals is to go to a waffle house in each state. Are there Waffle Houses in other countries too? I've been to WAffle Houses in North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, Tennessee, Florida, and South Carolina. I like the grits with a syrup covered waffle, hot chocolate, and one of their business cards.

    Thanks!
    Iggy McCarter

This is Iggy again. Once I went to a Waffle House in Lumberton, North Carolina. (I think that's how you spell it, it's in Southern NC) A man then sat down next to me and started telling me about the "Lumbees" or the Indians that lived in the area before the Europeans came. He was obviously a well known costumer that came a lot. He told me how he was one of the few full- blood Lumbees. Then he gave me a keychain he made in school and said, "Keep it." He then smiled and by then I was done so I wished him good luck and good bye. I still have that keychain with a silver boot on it. This gave me my love for small towns, my love for Waffle House, and a great new hobby of going to a Waffle House in each state!

    Melody

Anyone know? E-mail Kamran and he'll forward it along to Melody.

I just started working as a Waffle House waitress. No where else would hire me. The job sucks, I work all night. Drunk people come in and tell me to sing the waffle house song. I HATE THAT SONG. My roomate calls me the Affle Hoe. (Stems from the theory that a W.H. sign always has at least a few letters missing.) I think you all are crazy.

    -Marie

Well, we all have our tastes...

I just read the whole page what a blast. I worked for wafflehouse for 3 years and when I left (Because of a heart problem) I was a district manager in South Carolina. I have been recently released from the doctor and been cleared to go back to work. I cant wait, WH has the best benefits in the industry. They believe that the folks behind the counter (hourly associates) should always come first. If you are dedicated and love people then the wafflehouse is the place to work. I will be returning between July 15th and August the 13th of this year. I cant wait. There was quite a lot of comments about Bert on this page. I believe that Bert has been promoted to director of franchise operations. Joe RogersJr., a great guy and he cares about bussiness as well as people. Bob Bowman same accolades. Did you know that Bert's chili got on the menu because he won the cookoff for chili among all the managers in the company?

WaffleHouse is Truly Americas place to Eat and Americas place to Work.
    W. Julian

Ah yes, food of the Gods - the Awful Waffle. I drive a lot for my business and I always stop at an AW (term of endearment, ya unnerstand). Shoot, even have some as regular stops now - at Exit 126 in Fredericksburg VA (I-95), at Thomasville NC on I-85, at Hopewell VA on I-95, etc. Great food, not much more expensive than a McYuk or Burger Death, and ya get to sit down at a table that's not got baby goo or something all over it.

Great site - glad you did it!
    Craig Zeni

Thanks, Craig! Let's not forget, for these fast food prices you also get SERVICE, you don't just stand at the counter and give them a value-meal number. And more often than not, in my experience, the waiters and waitresses are some of the friendliest southerners there are.

I worked for Waffle House for five wonderful years in Fayetteville,NC until I got married and moved to Germany. Of course, there's no WaffleHouse's there yet, anyway.

My husband just got transferred to Killeen TX (Ft.Hood). The closes WH is 4 hours away.

Is there is anyone out there who wants to make lots of money? If so, this is the place to open a Waffle House.

    I'll keep my fingers crossed.
    Gwen

Last winter the whole city was frozen for a week. There was ice everywhere and fallen limbs and we had no electricity for 5 days. Of course, we turned the the good ol' waffle house for shelter. It was in the part of town that gor electricity back first so there were a lot of people there who hadn't bathed in a while but that was okay because we were all dirty and tired and cold but happy because we had waffles and coffee to warm our hearts!

    mary

ps- My friends and I were discussing why there is only a waffle house. They asked where there aren't different levels of waffle-ness. Why not have a waffle shack and a waffle mansion and a waffle trailer too? I like having just the waffle house though. Everyone is equal in the house of the waffle.

Mary -- though not affiliated with the Waffle House, there is also an imitation restaurant called the Waffle King, and I'm sure there are countless others as well. In fact, someone recently told me that the Huddle House was started by former WH employees who thought they could do better (they couldn't).

    Dear Kamran,

IT'S ME SHEILA FROM UNIT 985 OM ST SIMONS ISLAND, GEORGIA. BY THE WAY, DID YOU KNOW THAT WAFFLE HOUSE HAS ITS OWN COLLEGE FOR THEIR MANAGERS. IT ACTUALLY CALLED WAFFLE HOUSE UNIVERSITY. ITS IN NORCROSS, GA

    THANKS AGAIN
    SHEILA

Many people tell me that they can't understand many fans' obsession with the WaHo. I think the following psychotic short story relays the idea pretty well:

The Symbol of Peace. by:Eric Reyes Prime Minister Quim of the Intergalactic Commonweath sat in his big comphy chair at the center of the conference room. Several diplomats, old and young, human and alien, filled the large echoing room. Every since the Great Uniting, all the inhabited planets had met, unified. It was a time of great peace. Every planet, except Sol III. A little blue/green planet, with very primitive inhabitants. None of which had yet invented dependable, space flights, at good consumer rates. Quim turned his attention back to the meeting. A small group of diplomats approached him, they were making the hand sign of peace, tracing a square in the air, and then tracing a grid pattern inside it. Quim returned the sign. After exchanging greetings, they all returned to their seats, it was time to begin. Quim looked up at the platinum idol in the center of the room. It was the epitomy of equality, an intergalactic symbol of peace. The square design, the grid pattern inside it. This symbol had united all the galaxy. Forever would it be revered. He looked at it. He felt the power radiating from it. "Greetings delegates." Quim's voice boomed loudly over the speaker system, yet it still maintained the grandfatherly warmth that only his voice could bestow. "We come here united. the Intergalactic Commonweath." He let this soak in. "We stand here under the Intergalactic Sign of Peace." He pushed a button on his comphy chair, a ray of intense light shined upon the item in the center of the room. Refracting of the platinum, the effect was more than his architects had said it would be. The symbol glowed fiercely with the bright light. None in the room could help but stare at its magnificance. Quim gestured sharply at it. "BEHOLD THE INTERGALACTIC SYMBOL OF PEACE! ALL HAIL..." He paused for effect, "THE WAFFLE!!!!!!!!" "HAIL THE WAFFLE!!!!" The crowd boomed. "PRAISE THE WAFFLE, THE BRINGER OF PEACE AND UNITY!!" Quim yelled out one more time: "ALL HAIL THE WAFFLE!!!!" END

I grew up in Georgia in the middle of dozens of Waffle Houses, but over the years worked my way up to Detroit. There have been at least three occasions I can remember where I craved Waffle House so much that my wife and I made the trek down to Lima, Ohio (3-1/2 hours) just to get our Waffle House fix.

I've been to Waffle Houses in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Texas, Missouri, Ohio, Illinois (I think) and Indiana. You've gotta be careful in Indiana, since there aren't in fact any "Waffle Houses" there. Last time I went, they were called "Waffle Steak" -- because apparently some other company (white logo with a moon) had already gotten dibs on the 'Waffle House' name in Indiana. This may have changed by now, but it was like that when I lived in Cincinnati in the early 90s.

And just for reference -- there was an episode of "Designing Women" which mentioned the Waffle House, also. Anthony was driving the van around I-285 (Atlanta) and it broke down, and an old lady he was driving insisted that he walk to the nearest Waffle House to get her some coffee. Just though I'd mention this. ;)

My name is Sheila and i have worked for waffle house for five years. my husband is manager at unit#985 on st simons island, ga. i have an answer to one of your questions: the reason why there are locks on the door is bedause when waffle house fiest started it was cheaper to buy doors with locks than without. Bert is really a nice guy and so is Hogan Bryan (he is another vp) they are both great. I'm also a certified trainer for waffle house. People there call me Mrs. Waffle. have a good day and thank you for the page.

Its me again sheila from unit#985 the answer to the question on which movie waffle house was in it is called "TIN CUP"

    Fellow Waffle House fanatics,
    Sheila and Robert August

"Tin Cup" seems to be well-known for its Waffle House scene, at least among WH fans. And now we have an official answer on the door locks question.

I am just letting you know why there are locks on the doors. I live in Florida. Unfortunately, Waffle House had to close because of the hurricanes and of course lock the doors.

    Thanks.

    Kamran-

I was just in a Waffle House near Elizabethtown, KY the other day and was reminded that most restaurants feature a jukebox that appears to contain 45rpm records, as opposed to CD's. As if this is not rare and unique enough in this day and age, there is an entire row of songs "about" Waffle House. Naturally as an obsessive record buff I wondered where these came from. The idea came to me: if an independant record label were to produce a 45rpm single featuring new Waffle House songs by new artists, how would we go about prodding them somehow into putting them into the jukeboxes nationwide? It would be a wonderful experiment and an extremely unorthodox promotion. I got the label & the bands. Do you have any idea who i might try to contact about this, or at least a PR rep who might be able to give me more information about Waffle House jukeboxes & songs?

    -Dan MacAdam

Personally, I think it's a great idea. However, I have no idea who to contact about this. Also, the classic Waffle House tunes are usually in the country and folk genres (I believe Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson have both contributed tunes to the WaHo).

I would like to know what recent movie had a Waffle house has part of a discussion. Some people at work were trying to figure it out. It was some scene in a crime movie and the two actors wanted to eat at a waffle house. Do you know what movie this could be? I know I didn't give you much clues, but I figured you would know.

    Paul m

Sorry, I don't know. Can anyone help us out?

No place in the world like a WH after a long Friday or Saturday night. It's a tradition to eat a great breakfast and watch all the other loonies. Makes you feel slightly better the next day too! Waffle House is probably the only place in the world that will kindly serve food to someone that is so drunk they are putting quarters in the jukebox, trying to get a pack of cigarettes! Yep,been there and done that.

    Waffle House Forever!!

Besides being a great fan of the Waffle House, I also collect funny religious T-shirts. Imagine my delight upon finding one that says: (in yellow & black squares) "FATHER'S HOUSE" and on the back it says "ALWAYS OPEN"

I try to wear it whenever I go to the Waffle House, and I've found that I either get really nice service or they look at me like I'm crazy.

    Ben

we were on a trip with marching band my freshman year where we drove from minnesota to florida and we got bored so we counted waffle houses...he counted somewhere around 77 of them...it was frightening. we were really depressed though because we never got to eat at one...

    alicia

    Hi Wafflehouse goers,

I know how everyone must feel who has ever lived in Georgia, what a delight it is to have an omelette and a cup of rocket fuel in less than five minutes. Here in Plano, Texas, you have to drive twenty miles to the nearest wafflehouse.

If I could afford it, I could be a millionaire out here by opening up wafflehouses in this part of the country.
So, how about it? Any of you risk-takers?

    Pat Cygan

Where I used to live in Georgia, there were probably 8 WH's within 5 miles. Now I go to the University of Colorado. No Waffle Houses!!!! In high school, we used to hang out at the Waffle after a long night of alcohol abuse. Now the closest thing here to that is Denny's (argh!). I know I could make a fortune if I could open up a Waffle House out here. What is the story on franchises? Here's a pop quiz: If Waffle House is always open, then how come there are locks to the doors? Do they ever use them?

    Dave

The Waffle House is a far more accepting, and tasty!, franchise than Denny's. I have no connection with the Waffle House in any form, I'm just a big fan, so I don't know what to tell you about franchise's. Maybe write to Bert... his address is on the card above. And as for the doors, that's also a question only Bert could answer.

Hi, my name is Dave, they call me bigmoney tabasco dave, I'm the Human Resource Director for the #1 Franchise of WH. in Ohio. Is it my imagination, or does every exit on I95 from North Carolina to Florida have a Waffle house? Last year, my fiancee and I drove to Florida to visit some relatives and were just astounded at the amount of Waffle Houses along the way. On the way back, we stopped at one, tired and hungry, in the twilight hours of the morning. We were served by a waitress that could only be described as "all the sweetness of all the grandmothers in the world wrapped up in one person." It was awesome! I have NEVER had better scrambled eggs. And let me tell ya, the country tunes that came from the jukebox were just great(And I don't even like country music.) Being from MD, we are sadly without a Waffle House within 100 mile radius. But we are moving to AZ next year and I can't wait to go, just so I can have another serving of those scrambled eggs! I am including this picture of the Waffle House(located somewhere in southern GA)

    News Alert!!!

The Insane Clown Posse (ICP) was arrested yesterday at a Waffle House in Indiana. Just heard it on the radio. Even travelling "music" acts eat at the Waffle House. Its that good. It just what can happen at a Waffle House on any given day.

    Peace Out,
    AA

    UPDATE:
On the I-75 the most Northern Waffle House is all the way in Lima, Ohio.

I know because the billboard on the highway actually says, "Last Chance for Waffle House" Most Northern Waffle House going Northbound. Now when will Waffle House come to Canada. If I win the Lottery I will open the first one.

    I'm glad that's finally settled...

Not to one-up every single person who tries to talk the talk about the house, but I'm afraid that my friends amd have you all beat.?Every single day, from 9:00p-4:00a, you can one, if not all of there.?Yes, I know this is both pathetic and sad, but when you live in Stockbridge GA and go to Clayton State, your options are limited.

oh yeah- another one-upper for ya:
my best friend, C. Forkner Johnson, is the granddaughter of Tom Forkner, founder of the Waffle House. so there.
    come see us sometime.

So I was sitting in the friendly neighborhood Waffle House (also affectionately referred to as the WaHo and the Awful Waffle) with several of my friends and we became engaged in a discussion with one of the smiling (even at 4:30am) waitresses about stock options of our beloved establishment. One friend remarked that he couldn't wait for it to go public. Our waitress informed us, with a proud, almost parental look, that she had accumulated over 40 years worth of stock. Amidst our coos of wonder, she explained that she had been a waitress at the very first Waffle House at its opening in 1955 in Avondale, Ga. Now that's pretty impressive. (She also makes miniature replicas of our favorite hang-out which she sells for $45 ea. I know what my best friend is getting for her birthday!!) To continue my narrative, after being up for over 24 hours and seeing two shift changes, we decided to found our very own WaHo cult--The Sacred Order of the Immaculate Waffle--and have vowed to go there as often as we have two pennies to rub together. We have also vowed not to spend any more all-nighter's there because we sleep through our classes the next day...though that is a small price to pay for the satisfaction of watching the sun rise through the front windows while sipping (yet another) cup of high-octane rocket fuel. Come visit us sometime and join in the celebration of the Holy Sacraments of the Divine Waffle. It's the temple on Martha Berry Highway in Rome, Ga., just past Berry College. Look for the booth full of caffeine-crazed college kids. We shouldn't be too hard to find.

WELL-Scattered, smothered, covered, diced, chunked, and peppered,
    *JennipHer*

P.S. Here's a fun little ditty to sing to all the waitresses. They get a big kick out of it!

(To the tune of that old Toys 'R' Us commercial)

I don't wanna grow up. I'm a Waffle House Kid.
There's a million bended forks that I can eat with.
From diced to covered to scattered to smothered--
It's the best food that there is!
I don't wanna grow up 'cause maybe if I did,
    I couldn't be a Waffle House Kid.

I'm goin' insane, took in too much caffeine.
Drinkin' lots of coffee and inhalin' nicotine.
From Camel Lights to Marlboro Reds
    And Menthols are just fine!
I don't wanna grow up 'cause maybe if I did,
    I couldn't be a Waffle House Kid!

(Note: The cigarette brands listed in the song are not necessarily endorsed by the author. They just fit the rhythm of the song well.)

The best part about the Waffle House is the jukebox. Not only are there great classics by the Waffle House themselves, but I always like to pop some quarters in so "Tequila" plays over and over long after I'm gone.

Have something to say about 'da House? Mail me. Here's what other people who have seen the page have said:

Help!!!!!!!!!!!?I'm from Michigan and I have to travel to Indiana to have my favorite breakfast in the whole world (Pecan Waffle, Hashbrowns Scattered and Smothered, 2 eggs scrambled and O.J.)?I must admit that I have a very serious addiction to the WH.?I've collected Napkins, salt and pepper shakers, sorry Louisville, KY (near the Red Roof Inn), and Even a full WH silverware set from Dry Gulch, GA that I try to eat with once a week.?All this pales in comparison to the WH chef's(I consider them to be masters of the culinary arts) hat that a waitress gave me in Louisville (sorry again about the S&P shakers).?I wore that hat with pride when I had my picture taken at the Florida state line.?How do I bring America's finest eating establishment to Michigan??I'll do anything!!!!

    Sincerely,
    WHless in MI

Next time your at the Waffle House, can you pick me up one of those designer coffee cups? Thanks.

Your visitors may be interested to know: The invasion may have started. The northern-most Waffle House (I'm fairly sure of this) was built nearly two years ago just a couple of miles from my home in Northern Virginia. Now, if you don't know, Northern Virginia is pretty much Yankee central (it's above the new Mason-Dixon line: the Rappahannock) and my Waffle House is doing very well. So, maybe, pretty soon places even further north will be graced with the lovely yellow and orange glow of Waffle House.

That's pretty hard to believe. I may have to go up there and make sure for myself...

Great page man!!!! I worship the WaHo too!!! I am in a cult at my school called the waffle house cult and we get together and worship that beautiful shrine of waffles and hashbrowns (scattered, covered, smothered, and topped) oh by the way bert is he vice president of Waffle House inc. I have included a picture of the closest waffle house near me oh pleez put this on your page!!!

    James

It's good to know the Bert mystery is solved, but I wish there was something in the menu named for the top of the chain of command. Here's a pic James sent:

I live in Southern Pennsylvania, and plan all of my road trips south in the direct route of any Waffle House. I keep having recurring dreams at night where I drive down my street and someone has just opened a new Waffle House...I then wake up only to become more and more disappointed each time that I realize that it is only just a dream...I only wish I had a few hundred grand to throw around so that I could a few up in these parts. By the way, do you know where the northern most location is? Also, any idea when that Philadelphia area location will open? Thanks for the great page and keep up the good work....

    Will

I get a lot of mail asking about the northern invasion of WH... that is, when and if it'll happen. Unfortunately, there's not too many in the north with as good of taste as you, Will, and I know people at school who are from north who don't understand grits. It's a sad fact.

I'm currently doing time in korea and i would just like to say budda bless you. i have a waffle house shrine on my wall from menues to name tags to hats. i also have cups and plates. I dont know if you have all this stuff but the staff will usually hook you up. get some scattered smothered covered and chunked for me i look foward to coming home and getting it for my self. stay cool

    Sean

It's good to know the Waffle House can give a man solstice in times like this. God bless you.

Why cordon bleu when you can chicken melt?

My memories of Waffle House go back beyond memories. There has always been a Darlene in my life who brought me chocolate milk, Coca-Cola (the only "Real Thing") and now -- the never empty cup of coffee.

I've had everything on the menu except pork chops and that's personal. It was all great.

I recently read an article about some people getting sick at a local "big deal" restaurant in the Atlanta area because of some things they were doing/were not doing back in the kitchen.

Won't happen at the Waffle House. No back in the kitchen to it. If it's happening, you see it. If you don't like what you see, you leave. Just damn beautiful in its simplicity.

When you go to the WH for breakfast -- even if you just get coffee and one of those sweet rolls -- leave a dollar tip. Darlene deserves it.

While we were sitting in the crowded Waffle House and one of the Waffle House Angels was treating us royally....EVERYBODY royally....my wife and I were reading "the next story" out of a Grizzard book. Amazingly, it was his story about THE WAFFLE HOUSE ANGEL""! Give me a wish & I would love to think that somehow someday I could sit in a Waffle House Booth, eating the world's best cheeseburger, and listening to Lewis tell his stories! Surely there are yellow and black neon signs flashing "Waffle House" in heaven! What? You'd like to join us? Sure! & Honey, bring us another cup of coffee for our friend!!!!

    Lee

An angel, with wings of pecan waffles and a fried egg halo...

I was at waffle house the other day and I SWEAR TO GOD some one was getting married there.

    Chaz

I'll be damned if someone beat me to it. There goes my plans for a precedence. Did people throw rice or grits at them?

...I'm a Grill Operator at unit #658 (Fairground St., Marietta, GA)... though I'm probably about to get fired for being sick 2 days in the past week (bronchitis sucks...)

I enjoyed the Awful Waffle more before I went to work for them... but there will never be a substitute for that dark, murky, deadly brown stuff they call "coffee".. If I do get fired I'll probably have to go to rehab, since I drink over a gallon a day....

Best Waffle House story: Well, there was the time I had a gun pointed at me, but I wasn't actually the target, just in the line of fire, so that doesn't count... The best one is when I was working at unit #552 (Delk Rd. & I-75) and had to work a Friday third shift by myself (with 2 waittresses.. my backup cook never showed up!)... I called the manager at home (who had just taken over the store the day before.. I hadn't even met her yet), and she came in to help me out.. She hated me from minute 1, because I told her I was leading, and she was backing up, and that's final... and after about an hour, we had a guy come in and order his bacon "medium, don't use the grill weight, and I don't want any fat on it"... which is of course not possible unless you cut the fat off with a knife. After cooking his order 3 times (first time he said "there's fat on it". Second time he said "there's still fat on it." Third time he said, "Hey! You just cut the fat off the last one with a steak knife! That's not the way I want it!"), I finally got sick of it, and took an order of raw bacon to his table. I held it up in one hand, and in my best "have a nice day" voice, said "Sir, THIS is bacon. See the white stuff? THAT is fat. Notice there is about 10 times as much white stuff as there is pink? I think what you want is SIZZLEAN, which you can buy at Kroger, right down the street. I suggest you get going immediately."
This was of course in a completely packed restaurant, about 1 AM on a Friday, with my manager standing 5 feet away, with a look on her face that said, "Surely God shall strike this impudent mortal with a bolt from the Heavens!"... I let her cook the guy's bacon, which she cooked well-done, under a grill weight, and which he enjoyed greatly, just as though that was the way he wanted it... Oddly enough, I did not get fired for that... although I did get fired about 2 months later for calling in sick (I was sick. The manager's husband was at my next door neighbor's house, so I went over there to offer to let him take my temperature, so she'd believe me... He gave me a lecture on "the work ethic" in between hits on a pipe full of weed... So I went to work for Waffle House, Inc. instead of Northlake Foods (franchise owner of that unit)

    Lord Spatula

I'm sorry to hear this, Lord. It's a shame there are customers like that who don't appreciate the chain like most of us purist fans. Good luck with your new location.

It's often nice to find others with a sense of appreciation and with such adamant lunacy about the Waffle House. Whenever people hear that it is my favourite restaurant, they dismiss it as being fatuitous or overtly asinine. And, I try to explain to them that Waffle House is THE number one seller of raisin toast in the United States (and, believe you me, that is a lot of dried grapes, buster). If they sneer at my obsession for the nonstop, always fast-paced eating experience that is the Waffle House, I challenge them to name another 24 / 7, 365 day-a-year restaurant where you can buy a U.S.D.A. steak at the same time scrambled eggs (something the British would never do). Or, what other near-fastfood chain has such a great dental and medical plan? Those waitresses have some straight-looking teeth, let me tell you.

Of course, my family moved to Kansas (which has about as many Waffle Houses as downtown Trinidad) and I was slowly weened off of my once nourishing addiction. The withdrawal was though. There's no twelve-step program available, and no psychiatrist would even consider addressing a breakdown revolving around a breakfast joint. So, I'm glad to find a temporary haven, even an electronic one, to satisfy me needs.

    Barely coping,
    Ian

You have brought tears to my eyes with your tragic story. I can only pray that someone brings a franchise near you soon. Thank you for your touching words.

I checked out the website yesterday and enjoyed it very much. The Waffle House (also known as "The King") played a major role of our college careers. If it wasn't a scattered, smothered and covered that did the trick, it was Gina. And of course there was Dave, the line cook, with his unmistakable silver snakeskin boots. I've not seen a snake that color yet which makes me think they are very rare and very valuable.

Many late nights/early mornings were spent traveling down Hillsboro looking for a nosh and all we had to do was Look for that big yellow sign. Comfort, convenience and above all, "Good food, fast".

    Andrew

I always have to give much props to the employees, whether they be genuinely decent or for their characteristic apathy towards humanity.

Hashbrowns are only good if served scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, topped, and stomped and don't forget the tabasco sauce. thank you.

    Ronald

I wouldn't have it any other way, man. You're welcome, come back anytime we're open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. 366 on leap years.

I can't believe there is someone out there who worships the Waffle House like me. There is nothing on earth that can compare to the Scattered, Smothered, Covered, Diced, and Topped with Bert's Chili. I've been eating at Waffle Houses for over 20 years traveling between Connecticut and Florida. It is very encouraging to see new ones popping up further north along I-95 in Va. It won't be long before they make way to the Northeast, following the lead of Cracker Barrel.

    Thanks for your invaluble service,
    Christopher

I've always wondered, who is Bert? Anyway, he kicks rear. You are quite a dedicated fan, I am much impressed.

We love the Waffle House soooooo much here in NJ that we take 4 hour trips to VA to hit one. I am planning on opening a franchise here in NJ, so if you are ever in the Philly area, stop by!!!

    Steve

Me and my friends love the Waffle House we eat there all the time we can get away from all of our troubles there. It has a good atmosphere. I live in GA it has the most Waffle Houses in the world. This spring i plan to take a road trip around GA just to say i ate at every Waffle Hous in GA.

    Chris

I say last year's Olympics ain't got nothing on the Waffle House, Chris. I'm looking forward to hearing how this works out. You know those signs on the walls, naming the various menu items and so forth? I say steal one from every Waffle House in Georgia, and then you have a trophy room from your victory.

I live in Black Mountain, North Carolina, about 15 minutes outside of Asheville and there are only two Waffle Houses in an hour radius of Black Mountain. I always order the chocolate pie, but I ask for it first. The new waitresses find it strange, but to the others, I am just a particular regular. I am not some weirdo, I am just the typical teenager who loves the "House". In our town, it is 'cool' to eat at the Waffle House, but the food is a major staple of my diet. I have a question for you however: Do you consider the Huddle House to be a cheap copy of the Waffle House or a comparable substitute? My view is that comparing WH to HH is like comparing Wal-Mart to K-Mart. Waffle House is open Always 24 hours. Even major holidays.. While Huddle House claims the same, but they are not open on Christmas Day. Trust me. I checked. Well, I'll leave you to ponder over that.

    Jamie

Well, Jamie, I've never been to a Huddle House. Why? I've always believed in the idea of accepting no cheap substitutions. I'm always willing to make that extra few hours drive for the real thing. On the other hand, though, we must remember that by "ripping off" the original these restaurants are in fact admitting to the greatness of the Waffle House.
