The Kecak dance, (pronounced "Ketchak"), is perhaps the most stunning of all the Balinese dances despite its comparative simplicity. Up to one hundred or more men, bare from the waist up, from a living backdrop and simultaneous orchestration for the on action of an episode from the Ramayana. The name of the dance is derived from the "chak-chak" sounds that emanate in syncopated rhythm from the male chorus, a tradition derived from the "singing in" of the spirits in the ritual Sanghyang trance ceremony. A choreography based upon (the coordination of movements of the head, arms and upper body of this group of men, seated on the ground in a circular pattern, transform the entire stage into a swaying, living, flower-like configuration. In the midst of this melee, the dancers enacting the story sway and leap by torchlight, whilst a story teller chants the story enacted. Regular performances of the Kecak dance are held in the village in the evenings, and the opportunity to witness this unique dance should not be missed.

Sanghyang Trance Dance
The Sanghyang Dedari is a ceremonial dance, directly related to prayer and
ceremony. It is a means of contact with the spirit world in which the dancers
became the mediums. A group of women chant a centuries-old song, calling
the divine spirits from heaven to dance in the bodies of the young girls
as they kneel before a smoking brazier of incense.
The dancers sway to the rhythm of the music, and suddenly, as it increases
in tempo, fall senseless to the ground. They are bodily lifted up by their
attendants and hoisted to the shoulders of men who carry them to place where
they will dance. The chorus of song now begins once more, and the tiny figures.
Their eves firmly closed, sway to the music in perfect harmony, following
the movements of a simplified Legong. These young dancers have never had
lessons, and they could not repeat this performance in a normal state of
consciousness.
THE NEXT FOLOWED BY ANOTHER
SHOW :
Sanghyang Jaran Trance Dance
Sanghyang
Jaran is another version, involving a man dancers who tramples a fire of
coconut husks on a horse (Jaran) , represented by a simple hobby-horse of
palm leaves. The red hot coals are scattered, and the dancer trances on
in horse-like fashion, snorting and neighing, seemingly unscathed by his
ordeal. Regular Sanghyang performances are held in Bona, Gianyar, and this
enables those with a short time in Bali to witness these rarely performed
dances.
Regular performances of the Kecak dance are held in the village in the evenings, and the opportunity to witness this unique dance should not be missed.
