| VICTORIAN RAGS HISTORY |
| Ragdolls originated in Southern California in 1963. The originated from domestic backyard cats. It all started when Josephine, a white, long-haired female produced a black female kitten named Buckwheat, and in another litter, a mitted colorpoint male named Daddy Warbucks. The kittens were much more friendly than her usual litters and they loved people. They were given the name Ragdoll because they tended to go limp when they were picked up, like a rag doll. They are also referred to as having "the floppy factor". This was the foundation stock for all the Ragdolls today. Outcrossing has not been allowed in CFF since 1988 in traditional Ragdolls. Today they are a large boned, medium length fur, low-matting, low shedding, pointed cat with blue eyes. They have been bred both for their personality and for the show hall. They rival only the Maine Coons in size, altered males can reach up to 20 pounds, altered females range around 15 pounds. If you are looking at a "whole cat" (not neutered or spayed) they might weigh less and have a shorter coat. Their hormones are concentrating on making babies and not growth or the show ring. The Ragdolls are recognized in all organizations now, however CFA only recoginizes the Bicolor at this time. Although they originated in California, they are popular all ofer the United States and in foreign countries as well. The British have a large Ragdoll club as well as Finland, Germany and The Netherlands. Ragdolls are prized for their personality and general laid-back attitudes. They do well with animals and children. They are great companions to shut-ins and work well as therapy cats. They are gentle, loving members of the cat world. |
