| The Society was formed in 1993, as part of the Victoria Health and Leisure Club. Wally Birch, the Leisure Club’s managing director, and like-minded enthusiasts, decided to indulge their pastime via a golf society. From these early days, the Society’s main features persist. There were AGMs to elect a captain, secretary and treasurer, look at issues as well as the following year’s programme. Membership was open to both genders. There were competitions most months - on a range of courses - with evening prize-givings in congenial venues. Some years, ‘away-trips’ to other parts of the UK helped with bonding as well as testing members on other courses. There followed affiliation to the English Golf Union. 1996-97 saw the first tussle for the Hesvic Trophy, between the Society and Hesketh Casuals. After one member had disclosed his dual membership, the gauntlet was thrown down. Annually since, twelve players from each side have battled, with foursomes and fourballs, for this trophy. While this is competitive, the spirit is entirely friendly, with opposing players relaxing over lunch at halfway, then dinner. Early in 2004, following consultation with the Leisure Club’s management, the AGM approved changes enabling the Victoria Golf Society to operate independently. While the close link with the Leisure Club is maintained, membership of the Society is open to any golfer interested.
