Welcome to Vivekananda Institute of Algal technology
The management of Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith inaugurated "Vivekananda Institute of Algal Technology (VIAT)" - an institute dedicated to research and development of algae based technologies on 17th April 2006. .VIAT is specializing in Algae based Research & Consultancy Activities relating to Industrial Effluents Treatment, Municipal Sewage Treatment, Waste water Treatment, Algal Biomass Utilization and CO2 & NOx Mitigation by its Phycoremediation Techniques.
R&D Objective:
1. to conduct basic and applied research in the field of Algal Technology
2. to impart scientific knowledge in the field of Algal Ecology & Physiology and Algal Biotechnology to Researchers
3. to carry on basic and applied research relating to Industrial Effluents Treatment, Municipal Sewage Treatment, Wastewater Treatment, utilization of algal biomass and CO2 & NOx Mitigation.
4. to carry forward the findings of applied research to the benefit of the community

Culture Collection at VIAT: VIAT is maintaining a culture collection of potentially valuable micro algae, both freshwater and marine, which includes algae for effluent treatment, micro algae useful in biofuel production and other useful biochemicals.

International Conference on Appropriate Technology: Dr V Sivasubramanian, Director VIAT was in the International review committee of the 3rd International Conference on Appropriate Technology (3rd ICAT), held in Kigali, Rwanda from 12-15th November 2008. The theme of the conference was “Promoting Research and Practice in Appropriate Technology: Energy Solutions in the Era of Climate Change”. Researchers and practitioners from around the world presented their work to an audience of academics, professionals, government officials, business people and students. The primary sponsor of the 3rd ICAT was the Ministry of Science, Technology, Scientific Research, and ICT in the President’s Office of Rwanda, in conjunction with Umutara Polytechnic, Nyagatare, Rwanda, Howard University (HU) in Washington DC, and the Northern California Council of Black Professional Engineers (NCCBPE), Oakland, California. In addition, The Kigali Institute of Science and Technology,Le Universite Libre de Kigali, and the National University of Rwanda also supported the conference.
