About eVinaya

Here is some general background information about this website, and some messages from the Webmaster. If you have any questions about the website which is not answered here, you can contact me.

What is eVinaya?

eVinaya is a website aimed at facilitating search of materials concerning the Vinaya in the Internet. Presently, it consists mainly of links to Vinaya materials in other websites, with some comments on the material. It also contains materials of it's own [such as an article on Vinaya rules about money (Chinese version), Vinaya in relation to copyright laws, and a Vinaya glossary]. Hope to add more to it.

Why is this website created?

When I was trying to search for materials on the Vinaya in the WWW, I realized that there were very few of them, and they were scattered. I could not find any website dedicated to the Vinaya, which is an integral aspect of the Buddha's Teaching. So, to do some justice, I took upon the task of creating this website.

Brief History

This site was created on 5 January 2001 by the title of VinayaNet. Due to the webmaster's long absence, the free-hosting company took the liberty of removing his account along with the contents of the website.

On 8 June 2002, the webmaster revived it in a different host and gave it a new title: eVinaya. It also has a different structure, but remains true to the original aim, that is to make materials on Vinaya easily available in the Internet. (It's neither the same, nor another.)

Ideas for New Developments

Further useful materials on the Vinaya could be made available in the WWW—not necessarily on this site. Here are a few ideas:

• Vinaya Pitaka, plus its commentaries and sub-commentaries in Pali, and its various English translations
• Essential reading list on Vinaya
• List of Monasteries to learn the Vinaya
• Audio files of kammavacas, e.g. patimokkha, patidesana, adhitthana. [This, I must admit, is on the rather lofty side.]

If I can spare the time and no one else does them, I might put some of these in eVinaya.

If you

• would like to take up or help out in any of the above projects, or any other projects suitable to be include here,
• find any Vinaya related materials in the WWW which you think is worth linking from here,
• have any such materials and like to have it published here,
• find any errors—content or technical—in this site, or
• have good suggestions or constructive criticisms,
