Valley Bike Race
USCF
Permit 2002-598
92 riders lined up to do battle on the
tough Butternut Valley Bike Race course.
This year it wasn't the rain or killer
heat that riders had to endure but a brutal
cross wind. Good size fields took the start
in all 5 categories and as soon as the hills
shot the roads upwards racing was underway.
CNYC's Mike Beggs' probably rode the most
incredible race of the day soloing off the front
for 2 and a half laps and coming in alone with
a huge time gap.
Thanks to all the racers, volunteers
and CNYC's sponsors who make
this event possible.

-
- CNYC had another strong showing this
weekend at the Binghamton Circuit Race. Midway through the days
first event (The Cat 4-5 Open) the skies cleared and the racing
heated up. The Singer Industrial Park circuit is a great 1.6
mile loop made for lots of speed and tough pack sprinting.
-
- Josh Friedman was the lone CNYCer in
the Cat. 4-5 race. Josh is riding with some incredible early
season form. He has won the last two TVC Thursday night training
races and is looking for his first USCF win of the season. Unfortunately,
today's racing came to a swift halt when he flatted on lap 4.
Norm Valerio gave the okay for a free lap and Josh jumped back
in; the 4-5 race became a slow whittling down of the weaker riders
by frequent attacks by racers with some mileage in their legs.
When all was said and done- the race came down to a pack sprint
of about 13 riders. Josh grabbed a solid 5th place but afterwards
was relegated to last place in the main pack for missing a lap.(
As it turned out no free lap rule was in effect.)
-
- Nick Suozzo and Peter Martin lined
up in the small (15 rider) category 1-2-3 race. We were up against
6 Chris Cookies riders and 6 Multi-Laser riders. From the gun
Nick strung the field out and quickly brought our average speed
up to 23.5 mph. Then in the move that would dictate the rest
of the days event- Tim Tobbe (CC) and a Multi-laser rider went
up the road. If there is a general rule of thumb that any USCF
racer should keep in mind when competing against Tim Tobbe it's
- "if Tim goes up the road - you better be on his wheel."
That is exactly what I was thinking to myself as I saw the gap
grow from 25 feet to 100 feet in a matter of seconds. But, then
the thought that it was way too early to make the winning move
crept into my brain; Nick and I would regret our inattention
for the next 10.5 laps. After countless turns on the front- made
even more difficult by numerous counter attacks by Cookies riders
- we bridged up to the leaders and all that was left was a fast
pack sprint. Worn out by a tough day of chasing Nick managed
9th and I grabbed 11th.
-
- Results for the rest of the day as
follows -
-

- Todd Kapeghian 2nd,
- Nick Suozzo 4th,
- Emory Creel 5th.

-
- This weekend CNYCers will be
racing in Virgil NY at the Hollenbeck Spring Classic.

- Jersey Hill Circuit
Race
-
CNYC riders flexed their early season
muscle at the Jersey Hill Circuit Race in Danby NY. Cold and
windy conditions greeted the riders; it was a stark contrast
to earlier in the week when shorts and shirt sleeves were in
fashion. The temperature seemed to drop as the day progressed
and more than one racer was cursing the fact they didn't bring
along full finger gloves or ear-warmers.
The Jersey Hill Circuit is a tough but
fun 7 mile loop comprised of long medium pitched uphills, a couple
of flat sections and one or two quick descents. It's a course
that will slowly sap your strength and rewards an attacking style
rider.
A small field lined up for the Mens
1-2-3 race where Nick Suozzo was representing CNYC. After a few
tentative attacks on the opening laps Mike Jones poured on the
power and broke clear; only one rider was able to bridge up to
Mike and after a few laps of riding together Jonsey decided to
make it a solo ride for the win. Tim Tobbe and Rob Coapman paired
up to ride a solid race together to take 3rd and 4th place. Ed
Gravelle, Andy M.,Chris Harnish and Nick comprised the second
chase group on the road and came in 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th respectively.
The Masters race was dominated by CNYC
riders Ad Stabel and Mike Beggs. Ad took his second win of the
season and Mike-riding in his first race of the year -followed
closely in 2nd. On the second of four laps Ad made the race winning
move coming into the uphill section of the course; one rider
was able to bridge the gap and the duo worked with a short lead
until the 3rd lap; then 3 more riders came across and the rest
of the peloton had nothing left to offer. The 5 man group worked
a steady paceline and gained a comfortable lead. Coming into
the final uphill leg one racer surged ahead for a 30 meter gap.
But this wasn't a big enough lead to outrun the fast finishing
Stabel who at 400 meters to go put the hammer down and sprinted
away for the victory.
The Mens 3-4 race (comprised of 3 riders)
and the Womens' 1-2-3 field (comprised of 5 riders) were combined
for a 5 lap event. After a mellow ride to the top of the course
the group started to roll a little faster with pulls by Peter
Martin, Jim Elsner, Sara Barker and Matthew Myers. Having sized
the field up coming into the hilly section of lap 2 Martin decided
to lead from the front and set a fast but steady tempo and see
how the race would unfold. The field strung out and saw it's
first few victims fall off the pace. The third time around Sara
Barker put in a move that would further split the pack to only
3 riders; the two others being Martin and Costello. Peter once
again set the tempo up the hills and going into the 4th lap the
trio had a sizeable lead. Using her vast knowledge of the course
Sara attacked into the valley before the climbs and got a small
gap which only Martin was able to bridge and the two set off
for the line. Sara and Peter rode the last lap and a half sharing
the work to take the wins in their respective fileds. While Michelle
riding solo kept a steady pace and followed in for 2nd place
in the womens' race.
CNYCers will be tackling the
Binghamton Circuit race this Sunday.

70 riders riders braved the near freezing
but sunny conditions to compete in this year's CYLRR. All participants
riding in either an A, B or Women's category did two laps of
the 20 kilometer course. The CYLRR has established itself as
the season opener for upstate NY USCF racing and riders were
eager to show off their early season form. Individual placings
are listed below.
In the Cat 1-3 "A" race Rob Coapman decided to make
things tough on the first hill of the first lap.Coapman strung
out the small field with a wicked turn of speed at the front.
Going up the second climb Rob would pay for his efforts as a
3 man break containing CNYC's Nick Suozzo, People's Cycling Team's
Chris Harnish and unattached rider Dan Opdyke powered off the
front. From that point on it was a three man time trial against
a one man solo chase by Coapman. The three riders up the road
knew who was chasing them and worked smoothly together but Coapman
was able to bridge the gap and the race was all together heading
into the second lap. The final time up the hills Coapman was
dropped again but this time the three escapees put their heads
down and headed for home. Their move worked and Opdyke took the
sprint victory with Harnish placing second and Suozzo taking
3rd.
The Category 4-5 "B" race saw 57 riders take the start
line. After a mild 4 mile cruise to the first corner in Garrattsville
CNYC's David Ryther (Owner of Velosophy Bike Shop) decided to
start the fireworks. Dave strung the pack out into single file
climbing out of G'ville and onto the day's first hill. As the
pack regrouped and hit the bottom of the second climb MVBC's
Josh Benson rocketed out of the group and flew up climb gaining
a solid gap. But the day's windy and cold conditions were not
the type of weather where a single rider was going to outrun
a pack. On the backside descent the front group swelled to about
25 riders.
By the start of the climbs on the second lap 2 or 3 more small
groups had rejoined and a only a killer attack by a pure climber
was going to avoid a sprint finish. No such move was made and
the remaining CNYC riders had a plan for the sprint. In the closing
kilometer Rich Karaz set a wicked tempo to the course's final
corner and from there CNYC's Dutch Sprinter Ad Stabel was on
autopilot. Drawing on his vast racing experience and knowledge
of the course Ad cruised to CNYC's first major victory of 2002.
The top 3 was rounded out by Cory Burns (Unattached) in second
and CNYC's latest recruit Josh Friedman in 3rd.
Only 5 women took the start and thus were combined into the "B"
race. The women's race was handily won by Maria Klemperer Johnson-
who beat all but about 15 of the "B" men. Followed
in by HVVC's Sara Barker and CNYC's Michelle Costello.
CNYC will host another USCF sanctioned event on the same course
the weekend of June 2nd. The Butternut Valley Bike race will
offer racing from 40 to 80 kilometers in 5 different USCF categories:
Cat. 1-3, Cat. 3-4, Masters 35+, Women and Cat. 5. For further
