Hypergates

Recently, scientists on Rhylanor made a stunning new discovery, which could change space travel in the Imperium forever. They developed a device, called a Hypergate, which shortens In-System space travel down to a few hours from any point in the system connected by such a gate. The discovery was unveiled on 141-1119, when scientists tested a 2-gate system between the Rhylanor main world, and Chrysal, the outmost planet. This prototype gateway can transport ships up to a tonnage of 15t of displacement, but greater gates are possible, but also very expensive to produce and maintain. Additionally, huge arrays of solar panels are needed to power the gates. The ships transported need no extra equipment, besides maneuver drives.

 

Gushii Vliirand, the lead scientist on the project was quoted: "It was a stroke of luck, really! We when we were trying to stop the slime released by the Ancient Site (see TNS 079-1115). Nothing really helped, and some far-out approaches were needed. Well, that´s when we stumbled across the theoretical principles of these Hypergates. The gates create a dimensional shift, in which ships can be propelled to speeds greater than light, as they travel in an area of different laws of physics, between our dimension and Hyperspace proper. So far, a factor of 1.5 times the speed of light has been demonstrated, but we are confident that this speed can be more than doubled later on. The size will be increased as well: Right now we do have bigger gates on the drawing boards, which will be able to transport ships of up to 1000 tons, but these would cost a quarter of Rhylanors GPP each. But we are confident, the gates will pay for themselves in increased trade and transport fees."

 

The Rhylanori government announced that construction on larger gates will commence immediately despite the prohibitively high cost. The saved travel times will mean a decisive cost reduction for space travel in the system, which will attreact traders and help improve Rhylanor´s status as a major hub in the Spinward Marches.

To help pay for the effort, Rhylanor has requested exemption from the Imperial Fleet Tax for the next three years, the projected construction time of the first commercially useable gates. Although piracy is not really an issue in Rhylanor, it is expected that this system will stap out any chance of piracy forever. the gates can be protected by Cruisers, making any attack on traders an impossiblity. The Archduchy of the Domain has not yet commented on this new development.
