UP Rep members always had that urge to perform. Young as it was during
the years 1973 and 1974, Repists exerted all efforts to come up eight
meaningful and relevant productions but there were problems. To be
able to perform on stage, costumes, props and sets are needed. For
a relatively new theater organization, these things basic to the theater
were hard to find. There was no money, and in order for Rep to survive,
it had to have funds.
Financial constraints did not hamper the spirit of Rep members. There
was a problem. There had to be a solution.
Repists sought to simplify things if they cannot perform on stage
as often as they want to, why not perform outside the stage?
Cecile de Joya, along with other Repists started the idea of staging
a play in the lobby, at the AS steps, in the classroom. Using the
style of show and tell, a new theater form was born. TULA-DULA.
It was a theater form born out of convenience and lack of everything
else. Tula-Dula is a play in verse and acted out in mime. The Tula-Dula
makes use of limited cast and props, and nothing else. There are
only three characters --- a reader, a central character and a person
who takes on different characters, a miscellaneous. This kind of
play is satirical and it was used by the Repists to tackle the issues
of the day. The Tula-Dula was shown for free, and it was able to
reach a vast number of audience. Repists had improved the Tula-Dula
and Rep had become known for the new theater art form. The 1st Tula-Dula
was "Ang Kagila-gilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran ni Juan de la
Cruz."
"Kardong Kamote", a tula-dula about a student "promdi"
and his travails in the city of man. It is a satire on the educational
system. "Kardong Kamote" was adapted for UP by Richie
Valencia and Ed Vencio. Hence, "Iskolar ng Bayan."
Repists have written other Tula-Dula's in the succeeding years.
Those written include "Ang Kagilagilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran
ni Juan Dela Cruz sa Bayan ng Kababalaghan,","Juan Obrero",
"RVQ Spoof", a satire on the registration volunteer corps;
"Rizal sa Dapitan", "Artista ng Bayan", "Millenium
Iska", "Johnny Dela Cruz Jr.", "Kiko Kokei"
and "Pepita Petchay" to name a few.
The Tula-Dula has gone a long way. In the year 2000, UP REP produced
its first full-length tula-dula production entitled, "UP Ng
Ina." It has been staged at the Dalisay Aldaba Recital Hall
for several times. The plot was about an apathetic student who realized
in his dream that a genuine "Iskolar ng Bayan" should
know the present status of his country besides the theorems inscribed
in his calculus books. The play also showed the present conditions
of the farmers, fisher folks, contractual workers and the dilemmas
of students as well.
Up to now, TULA-DULA has been a firm weapon in surfacing issues
and other social concerns not only inside the university, but also
in other parts of the country. UP REP indeed has improved through
the years.
