IRL Crew Website Page
|
Crew website remains
active for current and most former members. |
|
At the request of the Indy Racing League,
the IRL Crew Board of Directors has suspended all activities. All
are encouraged to join the official IRL Fan Club, Downforce. To
those who have supported us, to our many members, to those fans who have
felt our presence, and to our many friends in the racing community,
please accept our thanks for making the IRL Crew an organization that
has made a difference. See you at the races. |
The following change has been made to the IRL bylaws:
ARTICLE X,
SECTION 1. AGREEMENT.
Effective with the adoption of this article, the IRL Crew Incorporated
shall suspend all operations with the exception of those indicated in
Section 3 of this article. The IRL Crew Incorporated agrees that it
shall not function as an entity until either one or both of the
following shall occur:
1) The Indy Racing League shall release the IRL Crew Incorporated from
this commitment,
2) Downforce shall cease to exist as a supported activity of the Indy
Racing League.
All other Articles of these bylaws shall be suspended until the
prerequisites of this section allow the IRL Crew to resume operations.
Select "Bylaws" on the Members Only page to read the entire amendment. |
|
Until this website changes
to IRL control, we will be posting "Crew Memories" so that all can see
just what fun we have had over the past 8 years. Please send us
your memories. |
A Crew moment from Nazareth, PA:
It was the first race at the Nazareth Speedway and an immaculate, black,
highly polished, Penske #3 show car stood beside the Crew tent.
Surrounded with security ropes, the car stood testimony to speed.
The Crew members present stood guard and turned away all requests to
touch the car, except one. A female fan approached one of the Crew
members and asked if her husband could touch the car. The
too-familiar response, "I am sorry but we cannot allow that" rolled
easily from his lips. "But my husband is blind and has listened to
Mike King on the radio all of these years. This is his first race in
person and he came just to hear the car sounds while listening to Mike
on his scanner. Let him just touch the car."
After checking that the Sinden Racing escort for the Penske #3 was
not nearby, the ropes were lifted and a tentative hand reached to touch
the left rear tire. The grateful wife thanked us profusely for
even this tiny letdown in our security. Both Crew members told the
wife that he could touch all of the car. With a determination to
savor this moment, ten fingers moved over the outline of the every inch
of the car and what had been only a sound on the radio became a true
speed machine. Tears flowed from the couple's eyes. What
Mike King could only describe on the radio became a race car in the mind
of one who would never see the glistening black finish. A fantasy
became real. With tearing eyes, the couple thanked the IRL Crew
for making the day the best day of the husband's life. Hugs and
strong handshakes were exchanged. It felt good to be a Crew member
that day. |
|
The IRL Crew had a great year of parties, timing and scoring
opportunities, free food, lots of giveaway items, great seats, the
chance to work with IRL Ministries Rescued Food program, collecting lots
of toiletries for CARA Charities, and an excellent bus tour.
Thanks to all of our friends and volunteers that made this year a superb
one! Be safe and buckle those seat belts just like Tony, Sam, and
Helio do. We will see you all at Homestead in 2005. |

Sam Hornish, Jr. Wins
IRL Crew Most Popular Driver Award |
|
During voting by the race fans at 15 of the 16 IRL
events in 2004, Sam Hornish, Jr. built a strong lead and captured
the award that is hereby announced. As noted by previous
winners, Arie Luyendyk, Sarah Fisher, Scott Goodyear, and Al Unser,
Jr., this award parallels those loud cheers during driver
introductions at each event. It is an award that recognizes
the driver's appeal to the fans. |
|
Arie Luyendyk, Jr.
Wins IRL Crew Menard's Infiniti Pro Series Most Popular Driver Award
|
|
Arie took the lead at the first event in Homestead
and increased it with each succeeding race. This is Aries'
second consecutive winning of this award, as voted by the fans at
each racing venue. |
The above awards were presented at the (Members
Only) Annual IRL Crew Awards Banquet on November 6, 2004. The
banquet featured Sam, Arie, special guest Donald Davidson, Tom Carnegie,
and of course Tony George.
There was a tour of the Andretti Green Racing shop earlier in the
afternoon.
|
|
Congratulations Tony
Kanaan - Indy Racing League Champion
Special thanks to Bill Babcock and the other Crew members who scored
for not only Tony but the Andretti-Green drivers during 2004. |

Jack
Arute's New Book

It is a tradition when moving a show car on the midway to always put
a child in the car to experience the thrill of driving it. This
was received from a fan in Nashville:
"Thank you so much for
the pictures, you really helped make the day for my son Jesse. Little
things like that really help promote the sport and make lasting
memories for the fans." js
|
Due to
football commitments Jack will not be available to conduct book
signings at the Crew tent. |

Final Report from Chicago
Chicago proved
again that it is an opportunity for the Crew to show our stuff. This
year the Crew had 140 display feet of Gass midget and Cobra cars,
Paul Dana MIPS show car, free root beer, and the culinary skills of
our resident chef. The Indy Experience provided the Crew hundreds of
posters and thousands of spotter cards to distribute to race fans.
The Crew enjoyed bacon, eggs cooked to order, and sausage in
addition to a large array of pastries for breakfast. A post race
party for approximately 40 Crew members was held at the Crew
hospitality area where the menu included skewered prawns, filet
mignon kabobs, brats, hot dogs, fresh fruit, Greek baklava, salads,
and chilled watermelon. |
|
Final Report From
Nazareth
It was a very busy day on race day at the final race
at Nazareth. For only the second time in the history of the Crew,
we ran out of ballots. Our neighbor on the midway, Firestone, provided
hats for all and two great banners for the Crew tent. We were able
provide scorers for two more race teams at the last minute. Kudos
to all who contributed to supporting the balloting. A post race party
provided food for our neighbors and Crew members as the traffic crawled
away from the track. The Crew will miss the great folks of Nazareth
and the food. Helio Castroneves moved into second place in the MPDA
voting passing Sarah Fisher.
|
|
Final Report from
Michigan
What a rush of voters!! For those searching
for the Crew tent in the infield, the track moved us to the center
of the midway and exposure to thousands of fans. As usual, the great
folks at Michigan provided the Crew a 20 X 20 foot tent on the midway.
With Paul Dana's show car blocking one side of the tent, the tent
volunteers scurried to process way over 1000 voters on the other three
sides. We gained 10 new members during the weekend and all joined
us for a cookout at the Crew tent after the race. The concession booth
next door donated trays of ribs, pulled pork, and baked beans to our
Wells' provided buffet. With so much food, we invited 30 Boy Scouts
and leaders to share our meal. A special thanks to the MIS folks who
provided Hot Pit passes to our tent workers.
|
Final Report
from Pikes Peak
For the 7th straight year it rained
on qualifications or the race at PPIR. Visions of Noah passed through
our minds as we rushed the Crew tent and contents to the parking
lot. The Crew tent was recessed between two others and had little
exposure to midway fans with the result being one of the lowest
vote totals in the history of the Crew. Timing and Scoring again
provided some extra wrist bands to allow some additional training.
A Crew-provided scorer again pushed the button for
the winning driver.
Final Report from Kentucky
Crew activities at Kentucky were again hectic as more
than 800 ballots were cast in just a few hours on race day. The Sam
Hornish numbers were again strong. Kudos to all of those who helped
with the rush of voters. A post race party was held for approximately
40 Crew members.
|
Final
Report from Nashville
With a local rock station's speakers
inches from the Crew tent, those working in the tent are just now
recovering from hearing loss. Lots of kids climbed into the Paul
Dana show car and one tot got a long ride down the midway as the
car was secured before the race. An email from his father is on
the main Crew page. IRL Scoring provided passes to the scoring suite
and trained a good number of Crew members to be scorers. Sam Hornish
maintained his lead for the IndyCar Series and Al Unser (aka Just
Al) polled the same number of ballots as Arie Luyendyk, Jr in the
IPS Series.
|
Final Report from
Milwaukee
Perfect weather. Great crowd with about 75% of the
available seating filled. The Sam Hornish fans from Defiance have
new red shirts and their group was quite noticeable in the stands.
Highlights of the weekend included voters Pam Scheckter (Tomas' mum)
and Tony Kanaan's wife, who vowed to come back and vote more often.
The Jack Arute book sales depleted our entire stock of his books (with
the exception of a few that are pre-signed for those who cannot get
to the Crew tent). When the Crew bus from Indianapolis
arrived, there was a chance to see lots of friends. Many of the Crew
members attended a barbecue in the infield on Friday evening. The
IRL provided six drivers to the midway stage to answer fans' questions.
A reporter asked Ed Carpenter if the two series would ever get back
together. His reply was that all of the best open wheeled drivers
are either in the IRL or will soon be here and that the IRL was the
best open-wheeled series in the US, so why should the IRL unite with
a lesser league. Thanks to Monte Hawkins and John Rabold for
organizing the trip. A special thank you to Diana Rogers-Adkinson
for her assistance in obtaining tickets and hotel reservations.

Final
Report from Kansas
|
| The Crew tent
was set on the midway approximately 70 yards from the large IRL Experience
sound stage so all that worked in the tent became used to shouting and
the universal gesture for "I cannot hear a word you are saying."
The first day was spent staying under cover from the rain. With the
Weather Channel showing a massive storm with possible tornadoes approaching
Richmond, the tent was taken down. As could have been predicted, the
weather held off long enough to finish the evening's activities. Day
two had threatening skies but only a few raindrops. We sold Jack Arute's
book at the IRL Experience before the track gates even opened. . There
were 18 Crew members spotted at the track. Sarah Fisher maintained her
lead in the IRL Crew Most Popular Driver Award voting. |
After a first
day rain out, the remainder of the weekend at Kansas Speedway was blessed
with great weather. This was 15 to 30 degrees lower than the first two
years the Crew was in Kansas. Paul Comerford was the perfect host and
provided all that we needed to function on the midway. Paul Dana supplied
his Infiniti Pro Series show car to the Crew and we put several hundred
kids in the car over a two day period. More than 20 adults praised the
Crew and Hemelgarn Racing for giving their kids a dream of a lifetime.
Jack Arute spent time at the Crew tent autographing his new book. The
Crew tent was at the farthest point it could be from the midway vendors
and our vote totals reflect our remoteness. Sam Hornish passed Sarah
Fisher in the IRL Crew Most Popular Driver Award. |

Crew
Events at the Indianapolis 500
|
| The highlight
of weekend was the appearance of Jack Arute on race day at the Crew
tent. While autographing his new book, Jack exchanged racing stories
with the Crew members working in the Crew tent. The Crew provided scorers
for Andretti Green Racing as well as AJ IV. With Tony Kanaan's win,
we can brag that we have given the AGR team a win in each race we have
scored. A social event was held at Babe's Chicken Restaurant. Visitors
to the Crew tent on the midway included Jim Harvey, Chief Scorer of
the Indy Racing League. A Crew member discovered Jim's model race car
building hobby and made arrangement to get a very rare Jimmy Bryan model
car built. |
Crew activities included long
hours in the Crew tent near the museum collecting ballots for our Most
Popular Driver Award. A great luncheon was held on Friday before the
race for 80 Crew members and IMS VP Fred Nation was kind enough to provide
40 garage passes for the day to the Crew. Jack Arute spoke to those
gathered and autographed copies of his new book. Kudos to the IRL Safety
Teams for their informative presentation on track safety.
Several Crew members volunteered to keep the CARA Charities hospitality
suite open for visitors during the race weekend. The suite became a
respite from the potential tonadoes for quite a number of members. |
The public is invited to join our Crew bus
tours to the races
|
The Crew is organizing our racing season bus tours
from Indianapolis and are opening them to the general public. The
tours can make stops on the way to pick up more riders. Some tours
require an overnight stay. The cost includes the bus, room with double
occupancy, race tickets, and a post race cookout. Non-Crew members
will be charged an additional $20 to cover the cost of membership.

Final Report from Phoenix International
Raceway
| They keep saying that it is a dry heat.
Upper 90's made the constant shade at the Crew location a treat that
several thousand fans wanted to share with us as race time neared. The
Crew provided all of the scorers for Andretti-Green Racing and that
included the winner, Tony Kanaan. A highlight of the weekend was a visit
from Troy Ruttman, Jr. with Walt Wilkens, Troy, Sr.'s mechanic from
that 1952 Indy 500 winner. Two social events were held with the first
at Mike's Pasta Restaurant and the second at the Arriba Restaurant,
both just north of the track. The results of the voting have been posted
on the website.

|
A chilly beginning but a warm sunny conclusion was in store for the
Crew at the Miami - Homestead Speedway. It was the perfect temperature
in the beginning to need one of those closeout Penske jackets selling
for less than half price. The weekend closed with a warm sun and a
shady spot for the post-race party.
More than 25 Crew members enjoyed the hospitality
of south Florida over the weekend. Paul Dana and Hemelgarn Racing
provided an Infinity Pro Series show car to the Crew. We spent hours
lifting small children into the car and encouraging their smiles for
picture-taking parents. Chilled chicken, chips, and cool beverages
were available to all of the tent workers.
Twelve Crew members attended a social event at the
Sundowner Restaurant in Key Largo. Some opted for the warmth of the
inside while others opted for the wind and sunset on the outdoor patio.
Everyone enjoyed the 10% discount coupons provided by the Crew. A
post-race party was held for 22 Crew members.

Crew Banquet Salutes Volunteers and Winning
Drivers
|
The Indy Racing League Crew came together in Indianapolis,
Indiana to salute our many volunteers, to honor the fan-selected Most
Popular Driver Award winners, and to hear Tom Carnegie, the "Voice
of the 500".
Sarah Fisher
accepted her award for the Indycar Series and truly wowed all in attendance.
Fielding questions from potential boyfriends to potential sponsors,
she demonstrated why she is the fans' favorite. She related a disappointing
experience at a young age, when she asked a famous race driver for
an autograph and was summarily denied. Sarah has vowed to make herself
available to fans of all ages. Amidst signing lots of autographs,
she took the time to talk to a Crew member's grandson on a cell phone.
Sarah represented herself, her parents in attendance, and the Indy
Racing League with the demeanor of a professional and the spirit of
a winner.
Special guest, Tom Carnegie, told story after story
of his career at the Indianapolis 500 to include holding a new track
record for several years. Tom praised the current collection of IRL
drivers for their intelligence and physical fitness regimens in addition
to their daring and driving skills. Asked about his contract with
the Indianpolis Motor Speedway, Tom related that Tony Hulman and then
Tony George has just told him to show up. Tom Carnegie has been at
work at Indy every May since 1946.

Sarah Fisher
clinched the Indy Racing League Crew Most Popular Driver Award for
2003 at the final voting venue,Texas Motor Speedway, of the 2003 IRL
season. This is the third straight year that the fans who attend the
IRL races have thrown their support to Sarah.
Arie Luyendyk, Jr. overwhelmed the competition
to win the first Infiniti Pro Series Most Popular Driver Award. His
father earned the very first award presented by the IRL Crew.
Congratulations to the two winners.

Final Report from Texas Motor Speedway -
October 2003
This final report
for the 2003 season cannot be rendered without first wishing Kenny Brack
a speedy and complete recovery. His crash filled nearly every newscast
and sports program for two days.
It was nice to return to Texas and renew many friendships but it was
truly nice to see three days of great racing weather. Paul Dana, IPS
driver, visited the Crew tent and signed an autograph for a very surprised
fan. Mark Taylor's mother and fiancée also stopped to vote at
the Crew tent. Both were amazed at how much there was to see on the
midway and promised to return to the Crew tent next season. Kudos to
those who helped at the Crew tent.
A social event was held at Babe's Chicken Restaurant
where the Crew table was visited by Tony George. A post-race party was
held on the midway for more than 20 Crew members that attended the race.
Door prizes were won by many of those in attendance.
Three new members joined the Crew at Texas Motor Speedway.
The big story was Sarah Fisher
clinching her third straight Indy Racing League Crew Most Popular Driver
Award. Arie Luyendyk, Jr. swamped the competition and snagged the Infiniti
Pro Series Most Popular Driver Award. Congratulations to both of the
winners.
The Crew looks forward to our season-ending banquet and
preparing for a super 2004. |

Final Report from California Speedway -
September 2003
Hot!! Hot!!
Hot!! Fast !! Fast!! Fast!! are the words that best describe the race
at Fontana. Temperatures during the race approached 104 degrees Fahrenheit
and the cars were even hotter while setting a new speed record for closed
course racing. Congratulations to Sam Hornish, Jr. for making the points
race even tighter. The Crew tent was located at the extreme end of the
midway and thus our voting totals were the lowest number of this racing
season. One new member joined the Crew at Fontana. Most Popular Driver
Award balloting has Sam Hornish, Jr. replacing Michael Andretti in the
second place behind Sarah Fisher.
133 ballots were cast. |

Final Report from Chicagoland Speedway -
September 2003
|
What an amazing finish!! What an amazing weekend for
the Indy Racing League Crew on the midway! Two midget race cars, our
tall flag poles, and more than 600 servings of micro-brewed root beer
attracted lots of race fans to the Crew tent. Dozens of kids took
the opportunity to climb into the cars as parents took photographs.
A hot breakfast was served each morning as well as those famous brats
for lunch by our Crew chef.
A social event was held at a local restaurant on Saturday evening.
The tent volunteers joined those on the bus tour to make more than
60 Crew members enjoying a picnic after the race. Kudos to those Crew
members who helped us in the tent.
$275 dollars in Crew merchandise was delivered.
The Crew added three new members at Chicagoland Speedway.
637 ballots were cast over the weekend.

|
Final Report from Nazareth Speedway - August
2003
|
The Crew gourmet/hospitality staff did a great job
with brats and burgers behind the Crew tent and the weather was nearly
perfect for racing. The tent was tucked behind the massive Toyota
exhibit and that cost us some Most Popular Driver Award ballots.
The Crew held a social event at Denisi's Italian
restaurant in downtown Nazareth and the owner greeted us with a 20%
discount off of our meals. Needless to say, we returned the next night
for another 20%.
It was quite a moving moment as the several hundred fans at the final
IRL practice watched Sarah Fisher being loaded into the medical helicopter.
Telling Sarah's supporters on race morning that she remained in the
hospital brought stunned silence. The Crew wishes Sarah a swift recovery
Sarah Fisher stretched her lead over Michael Andretti to more than
550 votes.

Final Report from Kentucky Speedway - August
2003
What a show by Sam Hornish and his Gen
IV. The Robbie Buhl team members were truly smiling after his good finish.
The Crew tent was beside the main entrance to the Kentucky Speedway
grandstands so every fan could at least see our "Vote Here"
banner. Paul Dana, Infinity Pro Series driver and his wife visited the
Crew tent. Approximately 30 Crew members were spotted at the track and
a good number stopped by to lend a hand. A special thanks to all of
them.
With "buy one get one free" buffet tickets in hand, a large
number of Crew members visited the Belterra Casino and participated
in the IRL driver autograph session. IRL Ministries invited the Crew
to a feast in the infield after the race. 20 Crew members took advantage
of the prime rib, barbecue, pasta, salads, cakes, cookies, and unlimited
beverages. A long list of door prizes were drawn and awarded to those
Crew members that enjoyed the hospitality of Kentucky Speedway for the
weekend.
On the Most Popular Driver Award balloting, Sarah Fisher took nearly
half of the 390 votes cast at her home track and improved her lead over
Michael Andretti to more than 440 votes. |
Final Report from Gateway International
Raceway - August 2003
The IRL Crew
was treated like true VIPs by Gateway International Raceway. All of
the worker passes had suite, hospitality, hot pits, garage, and media
center access. We put up a hospitality tent and served burgers and brats
on the midway for the volunteers. A racing fan’s life could not be any
better than that.
We had a great location, one of the first tents inside the fan entrance
to the track. With a very limited number of volunteers, we received
only 275 Most Popular Driver Award votes.
Sam Hornish’s mother stopped at the tent to vote for Sam. Although not
as large in numbers as Michigan, the wave of yellow Hornish hats and
shirts was evident.
Our drawing of a one day class at Driving 101 was very popular with the
fans and a winner was selected.
The Racing 100 package included orientation and the chance to drive
a 600 horsepower open-wheeled car for six laps up to 145 MPH. There
was a choice of six race tracks and one year to take advantage of the
opportunity. A Driving 101 graduate stopped by the tent and gave a glowing
testimonial from his experience.

Final Report from Michigan International
Speedway - July 2003
What a fantastic
race and a great crowd stopping by to vote for their favorite drivers.
Great weather, great big yellow tent, great bratwurst chef (Chip), excellent
catering (John Wells), hundreds of giveaways (flip-flops, cameras, and
seat cushions), a chance to show our new banners, and a great location
(in the infield across from the Craftsman Tool display near the tunnel
exit), made the Crew experience a very good one.
As last year, Michigan International Speedway provided the Crew a 20
X 20 assembled tent with tables and chairs. The spacious size allows
us to set up a "hospitality area" for conversation, dining,
beverage consumption, and naps of course. The Crew erected a flag pole
with the American, MIS, and IRL flags to attract voters. It really worked.
Sponsors from the Jim Beam team stopped to vote for Dan Weldon but forgot
to bring any free samples of their product for Crew analysis. One of
our distinguished voters was Infiniti Pro Series driver Arie Luyendyk,
Jr. Yes, he voted for himself with a large printed "ME". Sam
Hornish, Jr. vaulted from 5th place to 3d in the Most Popular Driver
Award voting. Arie Luyendyk, Jr. retained his very substantial lead
over his nearest competitor in the Infiniti Pro Series voting.
A cookout was held in the infield after the race for the Crew members
that attended the race. A drawing for lots of door prizes was held.
It was a chance for our new member families to meet some of the Crew
long-term members and relax while all of the traffic tried to leave
the track.Kudos to all of those that helped us over the race weekend. |

Final Report from Nashville Superspeedway
- July 2003
|
What a great race weekend! The heat of the day waned
and produced some very good racing weather under the lights. Our Crew
tent was located close to the main entrance and just 80 feet from
the IRL stage. Although the first band caused many to insert the free
earplugs available on the midway, the Kenny Brack band made all remove
them. The band's treatment of classical hits received rave reviews
from the audience. Surrounding Kenny onstage was a cast of rookies
and seasoned music veterans. The live recording of a CD for CARA Charities
was a hit with young and old alike.
A real hit on the midway was the appearance of Sarah
Fisher at the IRL merchandise dome.
The close proximity of the stage brought lots of voters
(501) to the Crew tent as Sarah increased her lead over Michael Andretti.
Among those voters were Larry Gatlin and Reba Fisher (Sarah's mother).
The chilled chicken was popular as were the cold beverages
in the heat of the day.

Final Report from Kansas Speedway - July
2003
|
Hot! Hot! Hot! Best describes the Crew at Kansas Speedway.
The ice in the official Crew cooler melted quickly but fortunately
lasted until the end of the day. The Crew tent was at the farthest
extreme of the midway next to an outfitter's tent so our vote total
was very light. It was incredible to see only one Sam Hornish Pennzoil
hat in three days.
Our portable Crew tent survived the gusting 35 mph
winds thanks to a few bungee cords and a cooler filled with beverages.
We got some schedule magnets from the IRL and a very long banner.
We were not too busy and that left time to talk with lots of race
fans.
Randy Covitz, sportswriter from the Kansas City Star,
visited the Crew tent for some help on a story about Sarah Fisher.
He did a great job of describing the function of the Crew in his article.
Read the entire article at: http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/6241189.htm
A social event was held at the Rosedale Barbecue Restaurant
on Saturday night.
Only 270 votes were cast as Sarah Fisher increased
her vote lead over Michael Andretti. Arie Luyendyk, Jr raised his
vote total to more than three times his second place follower.

IRL Crew Makes Kansas City Star
|
The following was extracted from an article by Randy
Colvitz, Kansas City Star, on Sunday morning before the Kansas IRL
race:
The IRL Crew, the official fan organization of the
IRL, sets up a voting booth at every race complete
with "I Voted" stickers given to those who cast ballots,
like at a presidential election.
That means those who vote are paying customers, and
those fans have voted Fisher ahead of two-time Indy 500 winner and
heartthrob Helio Castroneves, 2000 fan favorite Al Unser Jr., Michael
Andretti and Hornish.
The obvious explanation for Fisher's popularity is
she's the only woman driving in the IRL, which has a fan base that
is 32 percent female.
But her appeal transcends gender.
"I count the votes, and see who votes for her,"
said Roger Jett, executive secretary of IRL Crew, "and Sarah's
appeal is not only women. It's universal. They've all watched her
grow up since she was 12 years old racing.
"She set the track record at Winchester (Ind.)
Speedway, which is the roughest midget track in the country. First
she's a girl, but the second part is she was an extremely successful
midget driver. This is the next logical step in her career."

Final Report from Richmond International
Raceway - June 2003
|
Hundreds were in line to buy tickets an hour before
the track even opened. It was definitely a full day at the track for
most of the fans as they came early to enjoy the great local rock
band and buy lots of souvenirs. Before the race started, another grandstand
was opened to accommodate the much improved attendance. Rumor has
it that more than 50,000 filled the stands.
The quote of the day was heard from Sarah Fisher's
father as he escorted her to the AOL front row car: "It feels
good to walk by so many cars just to get to yours."
Another amazing run to the finish for Sam. Imagine
him with one of the new engines! Lots of kudos for IV for running
with the leaders' race speed. How about that extremely low fly-over
by the jets?
We counted approximately 24 Crew members who stopped
by the Crew tent at Richmond. The heat was more bearable on the second
day. Despite being placed right beside the misting tent, we were too
busy on the second day to enjoy its relief. We distributed nearly
700 seat cushions and 80 cameras. We used up all of our Most Popular
Driver Award ballots in less than two hours. An emergency copying
run was performed by Joe Franks.
We have two new members and two founder renewals (10
year). Definitely a good weekend of recruiting.
Being a night race, no social event was conducted.
No merchandise was available for sale at the Crew
tent.
615 votes were cast for the Most Popular Driver Award
and saw Sarah Fisher storm into a commanding lead. AJ IV has finally
organized his constituents and they are beginning to make a difference
in the balloting.

Crew Friday-Before-the-Race Party
|
The Crew held it's annual party at the Brickyard Crossing
due to security concerns. Chicken, roast pork, corn, and fantastic
rolls with apple butter highlighted the menu.
The third annual Jett Award winner, Larry Williams, was announced.
Due to Larry's recent surgery, he was unable to attend but his award

Brian's
Wish
Brian was a young man much like any one of us. He is survived
by a caring family and a young son. He also had a fatal disease; Amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Brian, it turns out, was also a very big fan of Indy Racing and the Indianapolis
500.
One of Brian's special caregiver's at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis,
a wonderful and compassionate fellow racing enthusiast named Barb Lyons,
realized Brian's interest in Indy Racing and mentioned it in an online racing
community; www.trackforum.com. The rest, as they say, is history.
In a matter of days, word about Brian had spread throughout
the Indy Racing community. Drivers, sponsors, team owners, crew members,
series officials and most of all other devoted fans like Brian, all came
together to help make Brian's life a little brighter. And along the way
found that a simple act of kindness can become so much more. By their private,
unselfish and caring gestures these generous people set in motion what has
blossomed into the "Brian's Wish" program . . . The "Brian's
Wish" program is a story about how one person made an effort and made
a difference.
