| SHANI MAHATMYAM ![]() King Vikramaditya |
| 001 |
Shri Ganeshaya namah I Shri Shani devaya namah I
I pray to the Lord who is known as Single Tusked, bestower of boons | The enchanting beautiful Lord Ganesha I Bless me I |
| 002 |
I worship goddess Saraswati, who is seated on a Swan
with tambourine and rosary in her hands I Bless me for success in my work I |
| 003 |
Further I worship my Guru, the kind hearted I Grant me a
stable & peaceful mind I Then I worship all the saints |
impartially with devotion to one and all I |
| 004 |
Now I worship Lord Vithala (Krishna)| while writing down the
story, that I know the least | Do bless me and allow the flow of words
emerge into my mind I |
| 005 |
The Story of nine planets | Originated in Gujarat | while
hearing this be very attentive | Be alert and also do not show any sign
of laziness I |
| 006 |
Now let me start I Once upon a time, in the city
of Ujjain, there was a famous ruler, named Vikramaditya | This story is
related to him | Listen with devotion and great interest I |
| 007 |
One fine day early in the morning, in the court of
Vikramaditya, seated all ministers, learned pundits also were present | Young and old all were present I |
| 008 |
The court was fully packed with visitors and others | They suddenly raked up a debate | Among nine planets who is the prominent of all | Explain on selecting one I |
| 009 |
Which planet is positioned at which place | How to worship| How is their knowledge| How do they appear like | How is their movements | Tell me pundits I |
| 010 |
On hearing this, pundits hurried with their answers | Opened
up their books of knowledge | Started speaking as per their knowledge I |
| 011 |
The first pundit spoke | Ravi (sun) is the mighty of
all | The person who worships him is never afflicted with adverse
planetary influence I |
| 012 |
Ravi is the same Surya narayana, for a worshipper of surya |
All his hurdles disappears | Mighty is the Surya (sun god)
| 013 |
All kinds of Poverty , on reciting surya’s name, gets
eliminated | A devotee of surya, if he wishes
anything, gets fulfilled I |
| 014 |
Ravi is the most essential | Without him life is not
possible | Nine Planets obey orders of Ravi (sun) | Such is the might of Ravi, the Sun God
| 015 |
On listening to Ravi’s story, and story of other
planets, all miseries get erased | That is the power of Nine
planets I |
| 016 |
But Ravi is the most powerful | Mightiest among the Nine
planets | One could easily see him with his open eyes | He is the Surya
Narayana (sun god ) I |
| 017 |
Then the second Pundit spoke | Som (moon) has miraculous
power and might | He is said to be gardener by caste | He
nurtures plants | |
| 018 |
And his beloved Lord , Shiv- Shambo of Kailasha , adorns him
on his head , like a jewel in his crown I |
| 019 |
Som ( moon) showers nectar | Satisfies all the gods
| 020 |
He is Nishiraj (moon) I The most beautiful
His beauty is beyond comparison | He never hurts anybody | Very cool ,
showers happiness for everyone | Always kind hearted | Devotees are
indeed fortunate, who worship Chandra (som/Moon) I |
| 021 |
Then third pundit spoke up | Listen mighty ruler
Vikramaditya | Mangal (mars) is the most powerful and the mightiest |
Listen to his story I |
| 022 |
Mangal Grah (mars) is very cruel | His anger is like sharp
edge of the sword | His valor and might is incredible | He is the planet of wars | Prominent of all planets I |
| 023 |
Mangal is goldsmith by caste | His cruelty is
immeasurable | But he blesses his devotees | Fulfills their wishes
earnestly | |
| 024 |
Arrogant persons, who do not worship him | On them he
is adverse | Destroys their wealth | And award them a cruel death in the end I |
| 025 |
The same lord Mangal, if pleased by worship,
bestows all boons | Wipes out all sorrows | Guards and protects his
devotees always, anywhere I |
| 026 |
Then spoke up the fourth pundit | Budh (mercury) is the most
powerful | His valor is immeasurable | Amongst all Nine planets I |
| 027 |
Budh is a trader by caste | He occupies highest
position among Nine planets || There is no disturbance , and hardships
to his followers , since he blesses his devotees with all forms of
happiness I |
| 028 |
The one on whom Budh blesses , makes him the wealthiest
person of all | He cares and helps his devotees always , every time |
such is the greatness of Budh |
| 029 |
A person having good zodiac positions of Budh | for him all
the doors of Luck opens easily || Budh never puts hurdles in anybody’s
work | He never destroys anything I |
| 030 |
Budh has a very heavy wisdom | He never hurts anybody
| He really cares for the well being of the world , and for all living
beings always I |
| 031 |
So then spoke up the fifth pundit | Guru ( Jupiter) is the
most abled one | Guru is the highest of all
| 032 |
Indra and all other Gods worship Guru, the ocean of
knowledge | For worshipper he is kind hearted || He has the ability to
erase good and bad deeds
| 033 |
Purifies one out of all sins I Agony, poverty and diseases
are all ridden off by worship of Guru | It is he indeed mighty among
nine planets | Such is the greatness of Guru |
| 034 |
Guru is priest by caste | He is highest of all gods
and goddesses | Accept his advice I |
| 035 |
Guru is the learned | He is all knowing | No one equals his
knowledge | None can challenge His words | One can never imagine any
other planet higher than Guru |
| 036 |
Hence worship of Guru (Jupiter) removes all obstacles in
their way | Those who always worship Guru, in turn satisfies the
nine planets I |
| 037 |
Guru performs Shiva Pooja | Then what to mention of others |
Thus Guru is the most abled and mighty of Nine planets I |
| 038 |
Then spoke up the sixth Pundit | Shukra Grah (planet Venus)
is the most abled one | He helped the demons, by using his sanjeevini
hymns | |
| 039 |
Shukra is the Guru of Daityas (demons) I Words
of his praise flows in all the three worlds | His valor is immeasurable
| Hence Shukra is the most mighty one |
| 040 |
Shukra is very powerful | He destroys all sins | Hurdles run
far away, on uttering Shukra’s hymns I |
| 041 |
Those devotees who worship Shukra, always wins the war |
Shukra bestows devotees with bravery and valor | Shukra is blind with
an eye(Ekaksha) | |
| 042 |
All sorrows and poverty, just by worshipping
Shukra, run far away I |
| 043 |
Thus Shukra is the supreme of Nine planets | His fame is
also mentioned in Puranas | He is accepted by all | This is all about
Shukra Grah | |
| 044 |
Thus on hearing about six planets | King Vikrama pressed his
index finger on his fore-head, and said I Fine about all six
planets | Let all of us always worship them
| 045 |
Now tell me pundits | If any planets have been missed out |
What’s their name, about their images and statues I |
| 046 |
Then seventh and eighth Pundit spoke in chorus | Rahu (
solar eclipse) and the other Ketu (Lunar eclipse)|| Both are powerful |
Demonic by nature |
| 047 |
Both belong to Matang caste | Acquired fame in cruel deeds |
Just by their sight Moon and Sun, up in the sky, shiver
with fear I |
| 048 |
Rahu instills pain to Surya | and Ketu instils
pain to Chandra (moon) | That is called Eclipse, the lunar and
the Solar eclipse I |
| 049 |
One can witness eclipse with his open eyes | All living
beings suffer, due to evils inflicted by Rahu and Ketu | But if both
are worshipped, devotees are spared of their cruelties of pains and
sufferings | |
| 050 |
Rahu is the greatest inflictor of sufferings and fear , in
the minds of all living beings | Same is the case of Ketu | Trouble
making is their choicest hobby | Worshipping Rahu-Ketu pacify
them I |
| 051 |
Most cruel of nine planets , inflicting sorrows, sufferings
and pains always to the living beings | Hence worship Rahu and Ketu always I |
| 052 |
Finally the ninth pundit spoke| Shani (Saturn) is most
powerful and the mightiest of all planets | He is indeed prominent of
all | He is called "Lord of Darkness" I |
| 053 |
The person whom he blesses , for him everything is easily
achieved | He is able to raise a pauper to be a king , and grind
mountains to dust I |
| 054 |
The persons whom He curses , for them troubles of all kinds
come uninvited from all directions | Their families are ruined | Peace
and progress comes to a halt I |
| 055 |
Lord Shani is short tempered| He cannot be defeated in war |
Gods and Demons all | Shani dev spares none I |
| 056 |
Only the humble and devout persons , who worship this lord
undeterred , praise him, respect him , recites his names - on such a
devotee Shani dev showers, bestows all happiness, wealth and
prosperity I |
| 057 |
Idol of Shani dev is Black | He is an Oil extractor by
caste | One of his feet is Lame | His face is beautiful I He is wide
eyed (vishalaksha) | He worships Kala Bhairava (Shiva) I |
| 058 |
His crooked malicious eyes are very disastrous and terrific
| If his malicious vision is cast on any one - gods, demons, humans,
animals and all living and non living - they suffer immensely and
in the end destroyed | And if he is pleased, he blesses the
devotees
with all kinds of happiness I |
| 059 |
Listen about the significance of his vision | When Shanidev
was
born to Surya , Shani dev gazed his father Surya with his crooked
vision , due to which Surya succumbed to Leprosy I |
| 060 |
Lamed the charioteer of Surya | Seven horses of Surya’s
chariot turned blind | |
| 061 |
All remedies failed , nothing worked | But when Shani Dev
turned his eyes away , all the three became healthy and normal again
| 062 |
On hearing this, king Vikrama burst into a loud
laughter , and sarcastically roared “ very fine “ | “ what an
unworthy son" I What’s the use of such a son | An inauspicious
unlucky one I |
| 063 |
He cannot be called a son , but an enemy indeed | If a son
can cause sufferings and hardships to his father, such a son is
unworthy to his father and not beneficial to the world
| 064 |
He clapped his hands and stamped his foot ||made mockery of
Shanidev said to the ministers and his subjects , and addressed
to all present in the court | What an inauspicious son is this
Shani born to Sun god I |
| 065 |
These derogatory words of insult were not only heard by the
ministers at Vikramas Court , but also by some one else supposed to be
the most terrific lord | Who heard his humiliating words should be
known to all the readers | Grasp it with your minds and senses alert I |
| 066 |
Lord Shani happened to pass very closely through
Vikrama’s palace , seated on his Crow - driven Celestial chariot |
These condemnable, humiliating words of Vikrama fell on
Shanidevs ears | At once Lord Shani’s Chariot came down to earth
| 067 |
And like a flash of lightning, Shani Dev appeared in
front of King Vikram | All present inside the court were terrified |
All started saying Lord Shani has arrived I |
| 068 |
Vikrama stood up to greet Lord Shani Dev | Vikrama went near
Shani dev and bowed to touch his feet | Lord Shani moved back and
thundered in anger | |
| 069 |
You ought to be a famous and wise king | Since you humiliated me in your court , I will make you experience my miracles I |
| 070 |
Very soon I will enter your Kanya rashi ( Zodiac sign)
| 071 |
Don’t be so arrogant and proud I So saying Shani dev
stepped into his chariot I |
| 072 |
Vikrama pleaded to Shani Dev, he committed grave mistake|
Kind hearted Shani dev, please forgive me I |
| 073 |
But Shani dev was very firm in his words | Said Shani deva,
I have entered into your life cycle , and very soon you will experience
my miraculous powers | So saying Shani dev vanished | Vikrama felt very
sad and unhappy at this | Anguish and uneasiness gripped King Vikrama I |
| 074 |
Then Vikrama turned to Pundits and said | Insulting
the mighty Lord Shani was certainly wrong on my part | Now as he said
he will make me suffer | What should I do now ? I |
| 075 |
well what ever is expected to happen , I will have to
face it as per my ability | What ever in store for me , would certainly
occur I |
| 076 |
King Vikrama repented for his mistake| Dismissed the
assembly, and while leaving he visited a temple | He was unable to
think of any solution I |
| 077 |
He took evening bath, and had his dinner | Then went
for a sleep | Even while he laid on his bed , he could not sleep
well I |
| 078 |
This went on for a month | What happened thereafter, now
everyone should listen to it
| 079 |
Lord Shani entered into Vikramas Zodiac sign in the twelfth
place | Astrologically supposed to be very cruel and dreadful | Living
beings suffer immensely in it | Pains and sufferings are said to be
doubled I |
| 080 |
Then pundit advices King Vikrama , to worship Lord
Shani for 7and ½ years indefinitely | Shanidev is terrific
I |
| 081 |
You played a joke on Shani dev and laughed merrily | Now he
will wisk away your peace| The most dreadful shani who strikes terror
in the three worlds | He is the same Shani dev, bear it in your
mind Vikrama I |
| 082 |
Listen with concentrated mind , how to worship Lord Shani as
per shastra | How to please Shani dev | How to reverse the curse of
Shani dev I |
| 083 |
First you have bath with herbal water | Get horse-shoe and
an image of Shani for worship I |
| 084 |
Anoint the image with gingely oil | Place the
image on an earthen pot I |
| 085 |
On completing, give betel nuts to the priest, and
chant 23,000 times the holy name of Shanishchara | Light sacrificial
fire , and offer black coloured boiled rice, gingley seeds and jaggery
| 086 |
After this, offer alms to poor in the name of Shri Shani
dev I |
| 087 |
If reciting of holy names is done by priests on your
behalf , then presume him as lord Shani himself and offer gifts
to the priests I |
| 088 |
To appease the lord Shani , serve meals to dignified,
revered priests , as per your capacity | Distribute useful articles to
them | This will certainly calm and pacify lord Shani I |
| 089 |
Like a mother who protects her baby, likewise Lord Shani
will take care of his devotees| Then the priest said “ Oh King Vikrama,
I request you to worship Shani deva” I |
| 090 |
Vikrama told the Pundit , I will never do it | Shani is not
acceptable to me | He who cursed his father , how can he protect his
followers I |
| 091 |
Then Vikram spoke to the pundit | Now you may go home | What
ever is bound to occur to me , that is sure and certain to occur | No
one can hold it back I |
| 092 |
So saying, Vikrama forgot the whole episode|
What miracle took place later ? | Listen carefully I |
| 093 |
As usual one day , around in the noon , disguised in the
form of a trader (carvan) , Lord Shani, as a horse trader ,
entered the city of Ujjain
| 094 |
The lord spoke in Persian , as per his attire | Then there
gathered all inquisitive buyers| King Vikrama too reached the
spot I |
| 095 |
The trader spoke: “ these are very special horses,
meant only for brave-warriors” | Vikrama asked price of the horses | So
Lord Shani said , “before you ask the price, go for a ride on those
horses”, “you will become aware of the price by yourself ”
| 096 |
Vikrama took fancy to a white horse at first | Its name was
“Sarang”| Vikrama mounted the horse | The horse neighed and moved
around swiftly when whipped | It was a very smooth ride for Vikrama I |
| 097 |
Lord Shani’s (trader) intention was quite different | He
loosened another Black Horse | Its name was “Ablakh”| Price was one Lac
rupees | Trader fastened the bridle of black horse into Vikrama’s
hands I |
| 098 |
Deceitfully the trader persuaded and encouraged Vikrama to
mount on that Black horse | Vikrama said “wonderful” I |
| 099 |
Unaware of danger ahead, Vikram whipped the horse |
The horse galloped with a lightning speed | As fast as the wind,
the horse galloped , and took Vikrama away , far and far away into the
dense forest I |
| 100 |
The more he whipped , the higher the speed | Vikrama forgot
to ask the trader how to stop the horse and to alight | Vikrama felt
helpless | Whom to call for a help I |
| 101 |
No trace of any human being could be seen | Unknown, dense
forest, tall trees, river flowing aside | Finally the horse came to a
halt I |
| 102 |
There Vikrama got down, he felt thirsty as well | No sooner
did Vikrama move away from the horse, every thing vanished |
Neither the horse, nor the river and the forest | Only desert all
around I |
| 103 |
This seemed very mysterious to Vikrama | He felt very
disturbed at the happenings | Said to himself : what the lord had
in store for me | Neither the horse nor the forest I Very amazing
I |
| 104 |
Finally the Sun set down, and darkness enveloped the whole
place | Further he could not see any road | Vikram laid down where he
was for rest | Soon he fell fast asleep I |
| 105 |
After twelve hours the sun rose again in the morning | Next
day vikram met one milk-maid | She offered him water to quench his
thirst | Vikrama asked her the way to nearest town, and then Vikrama
took the route of that town I |
| 106 |
On walking up to few miles, he reached the town called
“Tamalinda”, slowly andsteadily I By now Vikrama was very tired
| 107 |
And there what happened at Ujjain | People
waited for four hours after Vikrama left I |
| 108 |
The trader became impatient and spoke to the Minister |
Where is your king ? | Return my horse or else pay the price
| 109 |
Then the people of Ujjain searched for Vikram
miles and miles, all in vain | King Vikrama could not be traced |
Sorrow and fear besieged the minds of people I |
| 110 |
The trader spoke to the minister again | Hurry and bring
your king at once , or rather , pay the price of the horse I |
| 111 |
Hearing this the prime minister was confused | He was now in
a big dilemma | How to solve this problem | Vikrama could not be traced
| Where has our beloved king gone | Now the trader insisted for payment
I |
| 112 |
Then what did the prime minister do | He called upon the
trader | Asked him “what is the price of the horse , let me know
it” I |
| 113 |
The trader quoted him the price | And immediately the said
amount was paid up, from the king's treasury | The trader departed with
the money I |
| 114 |
After this the whole city of Ujjain plunged into sorrow |
People were in great agony and suffering | Miseries of all kinds struck
one after another I |
| 115 |
The city became a place worse than a hell | Theft ,
robberies, killings and drought, anarchy ruled Ujjain | What
further happened to Vikrama | when he was at Tamalinda nagari | Vikrama
reached the outskirts of village
| 116 |
King Vikram stopped and sat under a banyan tree in front of
a jeweler shop | The jeweler was a trader by caste I |
| 117 |
That day the trader noticed very extra-ordinary sales | He
earned huge profits by evening | The trader wondered how his business
on that day thrived so well | Finally he realized it was due to Vikrama
| Surely he must be a lucky mascot, thought the jeweler | Hoping
to be a good person, the trader called upon Vikrama I |
| 118 |
Greeted him | Then the trader requested Vikrama to have some
snacks | He enquired about Vikrama's caste | Which city he had come
from I |
| 119 |
King Vikrama replied | I am a warrior by caste | A foreigner
to this town | My country is far away | For few hours I stopped here to
take rest I |
| 120 |
The jeweler then arranged for food | Finest cuisines |
Variety of sweet dishes
| 121 |
Then the jeweler called upon the warrior | Invited him
for dinner | After having food, you may leave for your destination said
the jeweler I |
| 122 |
Vikrama took evening bath | Then he consumed the food |
Mouth-watering dishes satisfied Vikrama’s appetite I |
| 123 |
Meanwhile the trader asked Vikrama | Tell me the truth | So
Vikrama narrated the whole story | This convinced the trader (jeweler)
| 124 |
Now this trader had a daughter | Her name was “Alo-leka”|
The daughter’s condition for marriage was very strange I She wouldn’t
choose any one | She rather preferred a groom , who would match her
whims and wishes set by her
| 125 |
Her father was not able to find a groom for her | The
trader carried on his search | But now he thought of Vikrama, the
warrior to be the right person for his daughter I |
| 126 |
So he spoke to his daughter | Dear daughter, a handsome
young man , I have searched for you | Now you should not hesitate to
marry him | Don’t feel suspicious about him I |
| 127 |
He is handsome and smart | Well cultured | Very difficult to find such a worthy person like Vikrama | Above all these qualities, he is a very lucky person I You will always be happy in his company | Hence now you should accept him
| 128 |
On this the daughter told her father | “you are praising this man too much with all flattery words ”, “but this is not enough to convince me”| She didn’t accept father's advice I |
| 129 |
She said, today I will confirm myself | The true
nature of this person, h is knowledge, wisdom and wits, which he
possesses | By his speech every thing will be proved I |
| 130 |
By now it was evening | The Sun moved towards west for
setting | “Alo-leka” asked her father to send Vikrama to the drawing
room | |
| 131 |
So the jeweler called upon the warrior (Vikrama) | Go and
take rest, have good sleep in our drawing room | Interior very
beautifully arranged | You will come to know about it I |
| 132 |
Vikram got up and walked towards the drawing room |
The walls depicted paintings of birds – swan, peacock and cuckoo |
Different kinds I |
| 133 |
Paintings drawn with perfect skills | Horses and
elephants | The artist has not shown any kind of laziness I |
| 134 |
Further Vikram’s eyes caught sight of something more
beautiful | A luxurious swing hanging from the ceiling I |
| 135 |
A delicately carved sandalwood cot, studded with varieties
of gem stones | Decorated with different shades of colors | Jasmine and
sweet smelling flowers I |
| 136 |
Decorated with care | On the top was hanging a bunch of
pearls | Silk curtains fluttered, as cool breeze moved in to the room |
Oil lamps lit were glowing on all four corners of the room | Brightness
just like a full moon night I |
| 137 |
On seeing this, the king wondered | I can’t understand
what’s going around | Which country is this| How far away I am | I
can’t find out the facts I |
| 138 |
These are all the fruits of my misdeeds | What ever is bound
to occur, I can’t escape out of that | I have to bear all the
agony | Even gods and goddesses all of them had it I |
| 139 |
However, this seems to be the mighty Lord Shani dev’s work |
It is Shani who has weaved me into this net | This world of illusion
for suffering | Now what more I have to face | Lord Shani has cast
spell on everyone I |
| 140 |
So thinking Vikrama went for a sleep | Although Vikram
laid on the bed, he was very conscious and alert I |
| 141 |
Various type of views emerged into his mind | Waves of
wisdom flashed up | Hence he could not sleep well | Remained still and
calm I |
| 142 |
Vikrama pretended to be fast asleep | What did the daughter
of the jeweler do ? | She came upstairs into the drawing room, carrying
a glowing lamp with five- wicks, to display and present herself in
front of Vikrama I |
| 143 |
She was dressed with silk robes | She wore a necklace of
pearls | Perfumes of different kinds | Other sweet smelling items
I |
| 144 |
Her ankles adorned with gold anklets | Jingling bangles and
other ornaments | Lustrous and glowing I |
| 145 |
She appeared more prettier than the damsels in the heaven |
She came and stood in front of Vikrama I |
| 146 |
The king pretended to be asleep | So the young lass assumed
him to be asleep | What the lass did further I |
| 147 |
Took a sandalwood stick and wrote her name 'Alolika'
in Vikrama's hands | But Vikrama didn’t wake up
| 148 |
Few hours passed like this | When Alolika felt ignored by
Vikrama with out any response, she got annoyed and removed her pearl
necklace | Hanged it on a hook I |
| 149 |
And she went for a sleep | Soon the lass fell fast asleep |
Vikrama opened his eyes | Thought to himself | I have a great sense of
self-control and patience I |
| 150 |
Always I have strived for righteousness and welfare of my
subjects | How can I commit any sin | After all she was the daughter of
the jeweler, who had given me food and shelter| How can I speak to this
lass I |
| 151 |
He was very much disturbed | Suddenly Vikrama’s
eye’s caught sight of something | Very unusual and strange| Astonishing
,miraculous, it was unbelievable I |
| 152 |
The lifeless swan in the painting came to life | Suddenly it
flapped its wings and flew out of the portrait on the wall | Out it
came and sat on the hook | Started swallowing the pearls of the
necklace one by one I |
| 153 |
Vikrama was shocked at this sight | Thought to himself | Is
this reality or an illusion | Anyway, this incident will
certainly put me into trouble I |
| 154 |
Before Vikrama could do something, the swan swallowed the
entire necklace | It flew back to the portrait and turned again to be a
lifeless painting I |
| 155 |
No one else, other than Vikrama, was a witness to this
incident | True was the words of Lord Shani I |
| 156 |
So thinking, Vikrama went for a sleep beside the young
lass I |
| 157 |
The sun rose next day | Angrily the lass got up | What a
groom my father has chosen for me | An idiot, indeed an eunuch I |
| 158 |
Very angry at Vikram I She started walking out | Then she
searched for the necklace on the hook | On not finding it on the
hook | |
| 159 |
She suspected Vikrama must have taken it | So she said “ oh
foolish stranger | You stole my necklace and now sleeping carefree I |
| 160 |
Give back my necklace | You can’t digest this theft | And
you cannot remain silent on this I |
| 161 |
Give back my necklace | Leave this house immediately | If
anybody comes to know, you will face dire consequences” I |
| 162 |
The stranger spoke to the lady | I don’t know where it
is | Please don’t blame me I |
| 163 |
Out of rage, quickly the lass left the room | She informed
her father | Said what a groom you have chosen | His qualities are
really very good ! |
| 164 |
You have actually called in a professional thief | He is
expert in the science of theft | He had stolen my necklace | Now not
ready to return it I |
| 165 |
Then the trader told the stranger (vikrama) | I trusted you
| Provided you shelter and food I |
| 166 |
Offered you my daughter’s hand for marriage | Then why
did you commit such an act of disgrace | You are a real idiot I |
| 167 |
Is this the way of repaying for favors | Give back the
necklace and leave the house at once I |
| 168 |
Again Vikrama spoke to the trader | Said I am not a thief |
I didn’t steal her necklace | These are all my misfortunes I |
| 169 |
On hearing this the trader was annoyed | He called up his
servants | Tied his hands and whipped him I |
| 170 |
Even after this, Vikrama didn’t return the necklace | He
seems to be a hardcore thief
| 171 |
The servants beat Vikrama mercilessly | The servants didn’t
show any mercy I |
| 172 |
They seemed to be extremely cruel and harsh | “ kick him,
whip him” | Such was the words uttered by the trader I |
| 173 |
Vikrama was bleeding profusely | His body bore marks of
lashes | Give back the necklace| They were very cruel to Vikrama |
Nobody felt pity | None of them showed any mercy I |
| 174 |
Vikrama spoke again | Said I don’t have the necklace | Why
do you whip me | Now further what the trader did
| 175 |
He told his servants | He is a hard core thief | He is not
ready to accept the theft
| 176 |
What did the trader do furthe | He went to the court of the
king Chandrasen | To him he narrated all that took place | Also
told him about present situation I |
| 177 |
On hearing this, King Chandrasen sent his soldiers I |
| 178 |
They captured Vikrama | Presented him in the court | The
king ordered Vikram I |
| 179 |
Return the necklace to the trader and save your life I |
| 180 |
Then Vikram humbly replied | Listen King Chandrasen | “ I
don’t have it , this is very much a truth , I never speak a lie " I |
| 181 |
I shall tell you about the necklace | You all will
certainly disagree | Very unusual thing occurred to that necklace |
That is all about the fact I |
| 182 |
My stars are not favorable | Unexpected problems come on to
me| What more I can say | Such events will happen I |
| 183 |
Fine not to steal | If you say I have done it , you
should forgive me | I am ready to accept all accusation | Forgive me
King Chandrasena|183| |
| 184 |
Hearing these words of Vikrama, aroused the anger of King
Chandrasena | His temper rose high | He roared in anger | And what
order he happened to pass at that time I |
| 185 |
Called on his soldiers | “ come on, chop off this
man’s hands and feet” and throw him outside the city | Offer him no
food and water” I |
| 186 |
This was king’s punishment for vikrama | It is because
lord shani influenced the mind of King Chandra sena | Hence could
not think appropriately while delivering justice | Neither anyone in
the court did advise Chandrasena to be mild
| 187 |
Lord Shani is the greatest instiller of pains and sufferings
| He would oppress vikrama again and again | |
| 188 |
On hearing Chandrasena’s order, the soldiers promptly took
away Vikrama outside city limits I |
| 189 |
When they happened to be outside the city, they chopped off
Vikrama’s hands and feet | Tears rolled out of the eyes of people and
all those who witnessed this | Great pains and anguish vikrama was
suffering I |
| 190 |
After they accomplished their task, the soldiers
dumped vikrama into thorny bushes | The soldiers then returned to
the palace I |
| 191 |
The king Chandra sen enquired the soldiers | Is he alive or
dead | How will he be alive was the soldiers reply I |
| 192 |
Oh king Chandrasena | The convict must have died by now |
How will he survive was the soldiers reply | Oh king Chandrasen |
Without hands and legs, his soul must have left the body I |
| 193 |
No food and water | Hunger and wriggling in enormous
pain | Vikrama struggled day and night I |
| 194 |
Wounds were very painful | His plight was like a fish pulled
out of water I |
| 195 |
Any passerby who comes that way, on seeing Vikrama’s fate,
would say "Oh Lord the almighty | What kind of misery and sufferings to
this person " I |
| 106 |
If any one offered food and water, they too will meet
the same fate | Such was the order of Chandrasen the king
| 197 |
One month lapsed | Vikrama was left to die | Nobody
showed any kindness | It is all Zodiac disposition I |
| 198 |
Vikram grieved for the loss of his hands and feet | He
invoked Lord Shani as eminent of the nine planets | Supreme
amongst all the nine planets I Lord Shanideva | I plead you to be
merciful | Don’t turn me down | Accept my true devotion | Don’t be so
rude and harsh to your true devotee | Shower your mercy I |
| 199 |
Such humble words of despair shook up the heart
of Lord shani in the heavens | Then Lord Shani became compassionate |
Lord Shani felt | Vikrama truly deserves mercy now | This was the
limit of Vikrama’s suffering I |
| 200 |
He said to himself , now Vikrama should not suffer any more
| So saying Lord Shani inspired king Chandrasen to allow food and
water to Vikram I |
| 201 |
On hearing this new reformed order, all the generous and
kind hearted people came in turn and offered food and water to Vikrama I |
| 202 |
But without hands and feet, he was a handicapped | He was in
sorrow for the loss | Vikrama was restless and had no peace I |
| 203 |
Two years passed this way | He had undergone all kinds
of sufferings| This was his fate, his destiny , from which he could not
escape I |
| 204 |
Then one day a young married lady, an oil extractor by
caste, seated in a palanquin, happened to pass by that route |
She was going to her husband's house I |
| 205 |
Ujjain was her birthplace | Her husband in Tamalinda pur I |
| 206 |
While passing through that route, she heard someone
groan in pain | Stopped her palanquin | She came near Vikrama I |
| 207 |
She recognized him at once | Who has done this to you | With
out hands and legs you are sufferings immensly I |
| 208 |
Having said this, she bowed | King Vikrama
blessed her | He said may you lead a happy married life I |
| 209 |
How are my subjects in Ujjain | Tell me about my people I |
| 210 |
Then the lady Spoke | Oh king, all are living in peace
| But what went wrong with you | And what happened to your hands and
feet I |
| 211 |
So King Vikrama said | Listen oh noble woman | These are my
past misdeeds | Planets are hostile towards me | This is Lord Shani’s
curse I |
| 212 |
Then he narrated to her everything | When, where, which
incident took place | On hearing this, she told Vikrama I May god
shower mercy and bless our king
| 213 |
What further she did was | She picked him up with great
respect and seated him in her palanquin | And took vikrama to her
house | |
| 214 |
On seeing Vikrama, her father –in-law shivered with
fear | you brought trouble with you | If the King Chandrasen becomes
aware of this, he will surely punish all of us similarly I |
| 215 |
Then daughter-in law told him | This is Vikrama
without doubt | He ruled Ujjain with justice to all | But this is
Saturnian influence I |
| 216 |
He is the king of the country called Malwa | By luck I
found him | So I brought him here I |
| 217 |
Then the oil extractor went to the king Chandrasen | Told
him all about the convict , who was left outside the city
| 218 |
He asked “if you grant me and permit me, then I would take
care of the thief | Allow me to take him to my home I |
| 219 |
So the King Chandrasen nodded and gave his consent
| 220 |
Happily the oil extractor came back | Then Vikrama
told the oil extractor | I have one request I |
| 221 |
Please don’t reveal to anyone the fact that I have taken
shelter in your house I |
| 222 |
Then the oil extractor told vikrama | You help me in my oil
extraction work | In return I will offer food, clothing and shelter I |
| 223 |
Vikrama was very thankful at this | He said good wisdom you
possess | Never will I be able to reciprocate your kindness
| In these troubled times of mine you helped me a lot I |
| 224 |
Thus Vikrama served for oil extractor | Day and night he
kept on reciting Lord Shani’s hymns of praise I |
| 225 |
Seven years passed this way | Then one day how the story
took a turn | Now listen to that everyone with care | Listen with
devotion and concentrated mind I |
| 226 |
That day Vikrama was very cheerful and happy | By evening
when the sun set Vikrama felt a strong desire to sing out of joy
| Since Vikrama was a great classical singer I |
| 227 |
He sang Deepak Raaga | Speciality of this Raaga is
that if sung with due perfection, the flames lit at the lamps
glow thrice more brightly | Thus Vikrama’s voice lit up brightness of
entire town I |
| 228 |
Truly his voice was melodious | It seemed as if it was
Diwali I |
| 229 |
King Chandrasen’s beautiful princess Padmasen
was seated near her window in her palace I |
| 230 |
She at once noticed the glow of light | There was brightness
all around | She called up her maid servants | Asked them to find out
the fact I |
| 231 |
It was neither Diwali today | Nor anyone’s marriage | It is
surprising I Go and find out immediately I |
| 232 |
When vikrama finished singing one tune, the lights went off
| Vikrama sang another tune called ‘Shri-Raaga’ I |
| 233 |
The princess Padmasen told her servants | The person whoever
is singing these tunes, is really a master in music | His tunes are
melodious to hear | Find out dear I |
| 234 |
Bring complete details of him to me | Search every nook and
corner | And find out where this person is | Bring him here immediately
I |
| 235 |
Then four of the maid servants went in search of the singer
| There they found Vikrama at the oil-extractors house I |
| 236 |
They returned with this information | They said that it was
the convict, whose hands and legs were severed off at the order of our
King I |
| 237 |
It is the same person who is playing different tunes | But
his body is shapeless and ugly | Full of deformities | These are all
the informations about him I |
| 238 |
Then Padmasen ordered them | Bring that thief here | I will
serve him whole heartedly | His melodious tunes have pierced my heart
| 239 |
Maid servants insisted Padmasen | We will go and inform this
matter to your father Chandrasen, so that we will not be at fault | We
will not be held responsible I |
| 240 |
Padmasen promised them of their safety | But bring
that person here | Then myself, I shall Inform king Chandrasen |
You need not fear for this I |
| 241 |
On this the servants went out, and reached the oil extractor
| And carried Vikrama away I |
| 242 |
And soon they reached the palace of Padmasen, the
princess | On seeing Vikrama princess;s heart was filled with joy
I |
| 243 |
Then she spoke to the handicapped | Your knowledge in music
seems to be very vast | Please do sing a tune for me, which on hearing,
would quench my thirst for music I |
| 244 |
Then Vikrama sang a lovely tune for her | As sweet as he
could | But his voice was so melodious | Just like celestial singers in
heaven I |
| 245 |
Thus at the palace of princess music could be heard | Upto
Chandrasens palace | Chandrasen heard this I |
| 246 |
Then king Chandrasen asked his servants | Today what
special| programme is going around at my daughter's palace I |
| 247 |
Then the servant exclaimed | “Oh noble, kind hearted king”|
Spare us | We have no words to explain it to you I |
| 248 |
But we have one request | Come and see with your own eyes |
Then you will come to know the fact by yourself I |
| 249 |
Since views of Padmasen is very strange, we
cannot explain it to you as it is | Hence let us go there immediately |
Then do as you please | |
| 250 |
Melodious tunes of Vikrama induced sleep to Chandrasena |
Soon he fell asleep | What happened to the story | That one should
hear/read with pleasant heart and concentrated mind I |
| 251 |
By now seven and half years of Saturnine position for
Vikrama was nearing to an end I |
| 252 |
King Vikrama was worried | when will I be able to go
back to Ujjain | Undergone too many sufferings | But lord Shani is not
willing to shower his mercy I |
| 253 |
Grief stricken Vikrama laid on the floor | What happened
suddenly | Lord Shani became merciful | He appeared in front of Vikrama
I |
| 254 |
Listen Vikrama | Don’t you recognize me I You ignorant man |
Have you realized anything by now I |
| 255 |
Then Vikrama woke up and saw I Lord Shani was glowing with
brilliant blue brightness like a Sapphire I |
| 256 |
Vikrama prostrated in front of Lord Shani | Then lord Shani
spoke | “ Vikrama, you have struggled a lot, long live your greatness”|
I am greatly impressed upon you | Ask for your wish
| 257 |
That wish will be granted at once I Vikrama spoke | If it is
so, then Lord Shani, never harm or endure sufferings to any
human beings | Grant this wish as a blessing to me | I only expect this
from you, the merciful, graceful Lord Shanideva I |
| 258 |
I sustained so many pains and sufferings | Give me a
boon, that you will not instill suffering to any animals or living
beings | Grant only this as a blessing, Lord Shani
| 259 |
Lord Shani on hearing this said I Vikrama your greatness is
indeed very vast | You are more bothered about welfare of others than
about yourself I |
| 260 |
You didn’t ask for your severed hands and legs | Nor did you
ask for your kingdom and luxury | you are a good Samaritan I |
| 261 |
So saying, Lord Shani raised his hands high and blessed him|
King Vikrama got back his severed hands and legs | Vikrama emerged more
handsome and powerful than ever before
| 262 |
Vikrama touched Lord Shani’s feet and said “ bless me
with a boon that you won’t harass or trouble any living beings " I |
| 263 |
Then lord shani said to Vikrama | Whatever nature of
difficulties and sufferings you have undergone | The more
toughest sort of sufferings I had instilled to Guru Brahaspati
(Jupiter) | |
| 264 |
Comparatively you had suffered the least | I harassed gods
and demons impartially I You need to know how I succeeded
with Guru Brahaspati | What kind of agony and trial he had undergone I |
| 265 |
One day in the morning I paid my obeisance to
Guru with folded hands and requested Guru I |
| 266 |
Oh Gurunatha | I feel interested to enter your Rashi (
zodiac sign) | Please do allow me for seven and half years I |
| 267 |
Then Guru said to me| You do a favour to me| Don’t
enter into my zodiac sign I |
| 268 |
So I requested Guru not to bargain on this
| 269 |
At least allow for 5 years | Or two and half years is
fine| It’s the least number of years I |
| 270 |
But this too was not acceptable to Guru I |
| 271 |
Guru is like mother | Always he showers shade of happiness |
Words of Guru if I don’t accept at this hour, surely I would be cursed I |
| 272 |
So I touched Guru’s feet | Humbly I requested him | I am
delighted Guru-natha | Ask for a wish I |
| 273 |
For this Guru at once spoke to Shani dev | If so then do a
favor to me | Never enter my body | This is my wish for now I |
| 274 |
So I was quite happy | I asked Guru for seven and half hours
| If Guru wont accept this, then no animals or other living beings,
would ever accept me I |
| 275 |
Guru gave his consent for the duration of two and half hours
| And I accepted Guru’s words I |
| 276 |
At this Guru thought to himself | I will be busy in
bath and other rituals | This manner two and half hours will pass off |
Thus successfully I will evade Shani I |
| 277 |
This thinking of Guru in his mind | I grasped at that moment
of time | I made up my mind | Some miracles I should show I |
| 278 |
The time promised by Guru was nearing and Guru became
restless I |
| 279 |
Cleverly Guru worked out a plan | He decided to go to
the world of mortals (earth) | He thought to himself | I will bathe in
river Ganga | So he hurried towards earth | When lord Shani’s
Shadow was cast upon Guru, all the plans of Guru were overturned |
Shani disguised in the form of an ascetic | Appeared before Guru I |
| 280 |
With two water-melons | He offered it to Guru| Guru
felt happy | he paid two paise I |
| 281 |
After he finished his bath, he tied both melons in his loins
and walked | |
| 282 |
He spotted a city nearby | What happened there | The king
and prime minister both had sons I |
| 283 |
That day their sons went for hunting | It was almost two
hours, they didn’t return | The king was waiting for their
arrival I |
| 284 |
But they did not arrive | Afternoon lunch was delayed
| So he ordered his soldiers | Go and search for both of them | |
| 285 |
Then the soldiers left immediately | When almost they
reached outskirts of the village, there they noticed a priest
coming towards them| He carried water-melons tied in his loins
| 286 |
Here Lord Shanidev created a miracle | Both the melons took
the form of human heads | Soldiers recognized the priest | Said
what is in your bag I |
| 287 |
Priest smiled and replied I Water-melons for breakfast |
Soldiers said it looks like blood | We could see blood dripping out I |
| 288 |
Whether you are a priest or a butcher | Blood is
dripping from your loin | What is in it? | Come on, show it to us
| 289 |
By now guru was frightened | What is this unusual
strange happenings | With his own yogic power he saw | It was blood
indeed I |
| 290 |
Soldiers snatched and untied the knot |It turned out
to be two human heads I |
| 291 |
Sons of the king and his minister | Soldiers shouted, you
cruel butcher | Wicked, sinful man | Inauspicious for whole priestly
clan | No kindness in your heart I |
| 292 |
They fumed in anger | Captured the priest | Lynching
and thrashing him, they brought Guru I |
| 293 |
In front of the king | The soldiers narrated everything | He
is a child killer priest | He killed both children for no fault of
theirs I |
| 294 |
Hearing this the king fainted down | How did you do
this “Narayana” my one and only son | You didn’t have mercy I |
| 295 |
You are not a priest I You are death in disguise | you
swallowed my only dear son | “Now without wasting any time, take him
immediately to the gallows”
| 296 |
This was the order of the king | A noose got readied for the
purpose, outside the city | Arrangement for hanging the priest I |
| 297 |
Arrangement for hanging the priest was
carried out in full swing | News of the death of theprince spread like
wild fire I |
| 298 |
The wife of the prince, beautiful, young and chaste, heard
the news of her husbands death | She got ready for committing sati (
embracing death by jumping into husbands burning pyre) I |
| 299 |
Now here what happened to Guru | They took him towards the
gallows | Guru being nervous could not think any further | This
was Saturnine disposition I |
| 300 |
Then Guru spoke to the soldiers | Do not hang me now | I
will offer ten thousand gold coins to you | please wait for few minutes
I |
| 301 |
Spare few minutes for me | Then you will notice every
thing | Supposed to be true I |
| 302 |
Thus guru pleaded in humble words | The soldier felt
pity on Guru | Then he spoke to the executor | Wait for two minutes |
Hang him later I |
| 303 |
Two minutes passed away in discussion | Two and half hours
of Shani’s shadow was nearing an end | And now both the sons returned
home safely , along with their horses from hunting I |
| 304 |
The cause of king's grief was withered | He
immediately sent a message to the gallows | Don’t hang the priest I |
| 305 |
Then the messenger ran out | Came outside the city |
Gave the message don’t hang the priest I |
| 306 |
Then he was brought to the court | He stood in front of the
king | Blessed the king | He introduced himself I |
| 307 |
On hearing this, king stuck dumb | Said I never knew
your true identity I I hurled abuses on you | On lord Guru natha
| |
| 308 |
Shame on my part | I am a sinner| So much of ignorance
I |
| 309 |
Then the king fell silent | He fell at the feet of
Lord Guru | Tears came down | I am guilty lord Guru I |
| 310 |
Illusion turned me ignorant | Please do forgive me for that
| Then the king held Guru by his hands | Seated Guru on his throne I |
| 311 |
Then Guru said I Oh noble king | This is not your fault |
This is Shani’s illusion | instilled me with pains and sufferings
I |
| 312 |
Then Guru brought the loin and displayed it to all present |
The form of human head vanished slowly | And the real water melon
could be seen | All inside the court witnessed this strange phenomenon I |
| 313 |
Then the king requested Guru to dine with them | Sat along
with Guru and many other revered priests | All were satisfied
fully I |
| 314 |
Then the king offered silk robes and jewels to Guru | After
blessing everybody, Guru left from there | Moved towards heaven I |
| 315 |
Then lord Shani came to Guru | Paid him respects | How was
the miracle| Tell me Gurunatha I |
| 316 |
Guru heaving a sigh of relief, spoke to Shani | Two and half
hours play was very unnerving | You moved me from one end to
another Had you truly visited in me for seven and half
years | What difficulties would I had to face | I could never guess I |
| 317 |
You can rightly be called as the prominent planet
I Prominent of all among nine planets| You are capable of
instilling maximum pains to all living beings | I am the Guru but you
taught me well I |
| 318 |
Be it so I What all happened was certainly for good | But
never make anyone suffer like this | You should promise me now |
Shanidev, the most capable I |
| 319 |
Then shani spoke to guru | Never breed sense of pride in
heart | For persons who will be egoistic and proud, I will oppress them
like you I |
| 320 |
Lord Guru I Even you had a sense of pride | That is why I
had to oppress you | Consider me as a child of yours | And forgive me
for my deeds I |
| 321 |
Then shani went to Lord Shiva and said I I wish
to enter your Zodiac sign | Then lord shiva told me I |
| 322 |
Still whenever you come, please inform me before |
These words were agreed upon both by lord shani and shiva | Then the
next day lord shani sent message to shiva that he is going to enter
shiva’s Zodiac sign I |
| 323 |
Shiva on hearing this, went and hid inside an elephant in
the jungle | Then on return he found Shani | Shiva asked shani | What
could you do to me I |
| 324 |
Shani said: Mahadeva, you are the most supreme in the three
worlds | But you feared me and hid inside an elephant | Is this a
matter of pride for you?
| 325 |
These words of shani impressed Shiva the most | He blessed
shani saying | From today onwards you will be called along with my name
as suffix | Shani and Eshwara that is Shaneeshwara I |
| 326 |
Then shani went to Shri Rama | He spent fourteen years
in exile | When shani went to sita, she was kidnapped by Ravana | And
kept in captivity in Lanka I |
| 327 |
Ravana got sculptured statues of nine planets | And
used them as nine steps to reach his throne | Right on the top
below his foot| was the statue of Shani |
| 328 |
Naradmuni went to Shani | And said “you claim to be
prominent among nine planets| but there in Lanka , Ravana is stamping
his foot on your statue every day”
| 329 |
Isn’t this insulting for you | But there you are helpless |
Weak are often targeted by the mighty | This is not a matter of pride
for you | You are wrongly enjoying the seat of prominent planet I |
| 330 |
Then Shani spoke to Narada | Convince Ravan to step on the
chest of my statue | You will learn what I can do then I |
| 331 |
Narada said I I will do as you have said | So Narada
went to Ravan | Expressed his opinion I |
| 332 |
Ravana you are great | But amidst the open court, you sit on
your throne, by stepping at the back of your enemy | This is not
bravery | One should always step on the chest of the enemy I |
| 333 |
Ravan welcomed Narad’s suggestion | Next day he
ordered his servants to turn the idol upside down I |
| 334 |
Shani’s idol was now facing Ravana | Thus the eyes of
shani’s idol (cruel gaze) fell on Ravana | The entire Ravana’s
family was wiped off within few months | Along with sons and
grandsons | At the hands of Shri Rama chandra I |
| 335 |
King Harishchandra also could not escape shani’s cruel
gaze | Shani was in 12th place of Harishchandra’s birth chart |
He underwent all sorts of sufferings I |
| 336 |
He even had to sell his wife and his son I |
| 337 |
King Nala also suffered by Shani’s cruel gaze I |
| 338 |
Lord Indra underwent suffering and got cursed by sage
Gautama I |
| 339 |
Even chandra (moon) came under the saturnine disposition |
He touched wife of Guru| This left a permanent scar on moon I |
| 340 |
Shani visited sage Vashishta | His hundred children died of
Tuberculosis | Similarly in case of sage Parashar I |
| 341 |
Pandavas also came under Shani’s influence | Lost their
kingdom | Went on exile | When Shani turned hostile to Kauravas,
the abled mighty Kauravas were also destroyed I |
| 342 |
Similarly, even Shri Krishna was also influenced
by shani | He was blamed for theft of syamantak jewel I |
| 343 |
Shri Krishna quoted : “ Shanishwar , you are indeed the most
prominent among nine planets | You can instill maximum fear in
gods and demons equally I |
| 344 |
In this way I oppress gods and all | Compared to them, I
have instilled less pains to you | It is of very low intensity | Only
to make you aware by experiencing my adverse effects I |
| 345 |
Then Vikrama stood up | He prostrated lying on the floor |
You are prominent | In fact you have cleansed out all my sins and ego I |
| 346 |
Now I surrender unto you | Shower mercy on this humble soul
| Shower your kindness to this orphan (devotee) | Give me the boon that
you would not oppress living beings I |
| 347 |
Then lord Shani spoke to vikrama | You are indeed a well
wisher for all beings | You will always be remembered | You care
so much for other living beings | Your greatness cannot be compared I |
| 348 |
Then shanishwar appeared gracious to vikram than ever |
Happened to give Vikrama what he wished for | Lord Shanishwara said to
Vikrama as “ all those who hears or reads this great epic", I
wont harm them I |
| 349 |
This epic should be heard and read out in pure
devotion and full faith and trust in me | Those who respect this holy
book and those who preserve this epic| For them I would always be
graceful | I will extend protection to such a devotee day and night
| I will always shower blessings and happiness on them I |
| 350 |
Those who will not read and hear this, or those who hurl
insults or criticize this epic | To such persons, I will be very
cruel and harsh | They will face all sorts of sufferings I |
| 351 |
Listen the procedure for how to read or hear this great epic
| Read daily or on Saturdays only | Devotees who would read or hear
this epic| should fast on Saturday | I will be satisfied immensely I |
| 252 |
If a weak or unhealthy person cannot fast, still he can hear
this epic everyday | I will feel satisfied by this act | Never I
will harass or suffer them I |
| 353 |
I would make that person the most fortunate I |
| 354 |
This is my word of promise given to you Vikrama | And
after saying all this to vikrama , Lord shani went back to his real
seat | The bluish large planet Saturn | Further what happened to
this story | That everyone should hear I |
| 355 |
In the palace of Princess Padmasen , Vikrama met shri
Shanishwar | The lord made Vikrama extremely charming and
brilliant, like a sun I |
| 356 |
Soon king Chandrasen reached there, and saw Vikrama |
Extremely handsome prince | Stuck dumb and stood wondering I |
| 357 |
Then princess Padmasen stood beside Vikrama | Spoke about
vikrama | King chandrasen asked about Vikrama | Who are you?
| 358 |
Vikrama spoke instantly | I am your thief | Then he called
the trader merchant | Call him here, said Chandrasen to his soldiers I |
| 359 |
Then a few soldiers hurried to the house of the trader
| King chandrasen has called you to his palace| Leave immediately I |
| 360 |
The
trader got up immediately and presented himself at
chandrasen’s court | King chandrasen said to the trader | He was your
thief, who stole the necklace I |
| 361 |
The trader asked the king Chandrasen | Now please come to my
house | Of-course said the king | All went towards the drawing room I |
| 362 |
Then the lifeless swan in the picture came flying out | And
the manner in which it swallowed the pearls | Similarly it spit out all
the pearls slowly one by one | The necklace was now intact I |
| 363 |
This act of the swan was now witnessed by all those
who were present | This incident was really amazing and
mysterious to all | They said it is unbelievable, miraculous I |
| 364 |
The trader felt very happy at last | Felt joyful at his
heart | Offered his daughter “ Alolika” to Vikrama in marriage | Fell
at the feet of Vikrama I |
| 365 |
People’s gossip filled the air | Astonishing I A
lifeless picture of swan swallowed the necklace | And blamed such a
great person | This we came to know today I |
| 366 |
Then king Chandrasen asked vikrama | Which country you are
from | What’s your name | What’s your caste | And about your birth I |
| 367 |
Then vikrama answered to Chandrasena | What are you asking
wise King | IIam the emperor Vikramaditya of Ujjain I |
| 368 |
On hearing this king Chandrasen bowed respectfully |
And touched Vikrama's feet | Said I have committed great injustice to
you | Please forgive me, benevolent king
| 369 |
Had you explained the fact earlier, you would not have
suffered so much | Unknowingly so much of injustice I have done to you
| Now I repent for that I |
| 370 |
Vikram said to Chandrasen | This is the influence of
Saturnine disposition | I didn’t worship Shanishwara | Hence faced with
these consequences | |
| 371 |
That period was not favorable for me | Hence even my
wits and wisdom didn’t work | Now everything is fine | Hence I am able
to explain every thing I |
| 372 |
Thus there were celebrations in the name of Vikrama | Doors
of royal treasury was opened | Wealth was distributed among poor and
the needy | Everyone’s wishes were fulfilled | All were satisfied fully
I |
| 373 |
Then the oil extractor was called | Vikramaditya greeted him
| Handed over a province to him | Made him happy I |
| 374 |
King Chandrasen was delighted | Said today my
happiness seems to have no bounds I |
| 375 |
Vikrama accepted princess padmasen in marriage I |
| 376 |
Then asking chandrasen , Vikrama left for his
Kingdom at Ujjain I |
| 377 |
Chandrasen sent his daughter and Vikrama with great
pomp | He offered many priceless treasures | Horses and elephants |
Servants and provinces to Vikramaditya
| 378 |
Thus accepting all the bounties so offered , vikrama
arrived at Ujjain | The entire city was decorated | Vikrama felt very
happy to be back I |
| 379 |
Then Vikrama got installed the idols of nine planets | Gave
Shani the prominent seat | Built a temple and occupied the throne on an
auspicious day | All his subjects were overwhelmed by joy | They
received what ever they wished for | Vikrama was very satisfied and
happy I |
| 380 |
Then this Shanishwaras worship | King Vikrama followed all
through his life | And all the sufferings disappeared by the grace of
lord Shanishwara I |
| 381 |

| Brief
Summary This story is of King Vikramaditya I, who ruled central India between 850 to 900 A.D.(Ref.Encylopedia for exact period), Ujjain was the capital city of his Kingdom. Vikramaditya (Vikram) was a great Ruler, He was a scholar in all fields (Battle, Music, Mantra/Tantra, Justice, astronomy , arts and many more. He was especially famous for his Wisdom. He was greatly interested in Astrology. Hindus till today follow the calendar started by him “Vikram Samvat” (Solar Year). He was blessed by Mother Godess Kali and he also had Betaal ( Spirit) as his helper and wellwisher. It was during peaceful prosperous times of Ujjain. Vikrama was seated in his court and he asked his pundits. What was the reason behind Ujjain’s prosperity and wellbeing of its subjects. The pundits spoke it was because the Heavenly stars and planets were very favourable to the City of Ujjain. Hence Vikramaditya asked for clarifications of all the planets, to find out which planet is most prominent of all and unfortunately due to ignorance he insulted Shani dev (Lord of Planet Saturn ) Thus Lord Shani Dev appeared in the court of Vikramaditya and warned him of the consequences. Lord Shani came to Ujjain, disguised himself as a horse trader from Arab. During those days horses from Arab were in great demand by Indian rulers. Lord Shani successfully mounted Vikramaditya on his black horse named Ablakh. This horse galloped with lightning speed and dropped Vikramaditya in a deserted place. From there his misfortune started. His hands and feet were chopped as punishment for theft by a Local King Chandrasen. It was only when he chanted the holy name of Shri Shani Dev, lord became compassionate and blessed him. Later an oil extractor took pity on Vikramaditya and helped him. Further Kind Chandrasen’s princess fell in love with Vikramaditya’s melodious music and decided to marry him. Lord Shani thus appeared twice before Vikramaditya. First he appeared in the court and cursed him, second time he appeared before Vikramaditya in the Palace of Princess Padmasen for blessing him, thus Vikramaditya got back his severed Hands and Feet, two Wives – Alolika (the one who accused Vikramaditya of Stealing her necklace), and Padmasen ( daughter of King Chandrasen) Later Vikramaditya returned to Ujjain with all bounties, he built temples of Nine Planets, gave prominent seat to Lord Shani. Passed order to his subjects to worship Lord Shani for wellfare and prosperity. On an Auspcious day Vikramaditya once again occupied the throne of Ujjain and ruled peacefully. It is strongly believed that those who are suffering adverse planetory influences should Fast on Saturday’s , Chant holy names of Lord Shani ( Om Sham Shanischaraya namaha ) and read Shani Mahatmaya on Saturdays in the evening/ night. If possible visit Shani dev’s Temple. should offer alms to poor people with money, or Iron articles , blankets, clothes etc. this pacifies the lord Shani dev. |
