You know this game. It's the one where you get odd shaped pieces and try to form them into a square. Once that is done, then the square disappears and you get some points for it. The basic strategy is to leave the least amount of trimmings around the square you form so you don't end up with a bunch of junk on your playing field. That is what this is, except Squarez Deluxe takes it above and beyond that.
Squarez Deluxe introduces many more variables into the classic Square puzzle game. The size of the playing field changes if you activate certain blocks, sometimes rockets spew forth from blocks, annoying steel rods form that are only destructible by rockets or bombs. The secret to scoring is your score multiplier, which can sometimes reach 0 if you are not careful. There are 3 different levels to play at. Basic gives you the original squares game, for those who can't remember what any of the special blocks do. Intermediate puts some specials blocks into the game, but not anywhere near as much as Extreme does, where almost every piece you get has special blocks in it. The most well done aspect of the game though, is the two player mode. While in two player mode, the size of your playing field is directly related to the size of your opponent's. That is the larger yours is, the smaller his is, or vice versa. Rockets that are activated in two player mode happily fly over the divider and destroy some your opponents blocks, and bombs do much the same thing if exploded by the neighboring border of the play field. The winner of the two player game, is the one who scores the most points, not the one who lasts longest, so if you lollie-gag around while your multiplyer counts down, you can find yourself behind your opponent, who may have already perished.
The gameplay of Squarez Deluxe is fantastic, and will hold you to your computer for hours. Although the author complains about how bad his artwork is, I like it, on the other hand, the sound is nothing to hold your breath for. Squarez is very stable crash-wise, but sometimes the sound failed to initialize on my computer. Of course the best part of the game is battling your buddy in the two player mode. Squarez Deluxe is put out by the same man as Jetpack.
