This page is dedicated to one of the fastest cars ever made. The Buick turbo Regal, better known as the Grand National and T-Type!
The first Grand National hit the streets in 1982 with a two tone paint scheme and low horsepower. Very few of these were made and even fewer than 30 turbo versions were made. 1983 saw only T-Types as no Grand Nationals were made for this model year. 1984 and 1985 saw both Grand Nationals and T-Types with a fuel injected 200 horsepower engine. All Grand Nationals came with black and gray interior with the power 6 logo on the headrest and were painted all black. T-Types could be had in any color available in the 1984 and 1985 model years. 1986 and 1987 Buick engineered an intercooler into the mix, which increased the horsepower to a factory rated 235 for 1986 and 245 for 1987. Grand Nationals received special chrome rims and T-Types received the aluminum factory rims similar to those on the Grand Nationals from the prior year. This new intercooled engine absolutely screamed! The Grand Nationals and T-Types were the fastest production cars made in America for 1986 and 1987 (which really made the Corvette owners mad).
Turbo regals were available from 1978 thru 1987 with the best of these years being 1987. In 1987 they made a special version of the Grand National called the GNX. Only 547 GNXs were made and the sticker price was around $30,000. You might say that was expensive, but considering the the performance capabilities of the car $30 grand was a bargain. This is a car that could do it all. At a very conservative rating of 276 horsepower, this car could do the quarter mile in under 13 seconds if you could get traction. All this performance was accompanied by air conditioning, power windows seats and locks and other creature comforts usually reserved for luxury cars. The GNX was known as "The Grand National to end all Grand Nationals".
