SUMMER CAMP - Camp Whitsett

We are going to Camp Whitsett this year from July 5th to July 11th (Sunday to Saturday). It is run by the Western Los Angeles Boy Scout Council. Jim has been taking troops there for decades (sorry to make you sound so old, Jim). We are a well-liked troop because of the work/repairs that we do there each year and the significant donations that we've made over the years.

Cost for Scouts is $340; cost for Scouters (adult leaders) is $280. The adults currently signed up are Jim, Paul and me (Nancy). We have 7 boys signed up at this time. We usually take close to one dozen, and new Scouts have gone in the past and had a great time.

We will pitch our own tents in a wilderness site. This means the boys will decide who is bringing a tent, and who will share tents. The adult tents are a few feet away. We will having running, potable water. We use port-a-potties. There is a designated shower for boys only, and one for adults only. The camp has a large open air dining hall that serves good food.

We travel to camp on Sunday; travel home on Saturday. Monday thru Friday is scheduled time at camp. We awake and dress for the opening flag ceremony; have breakfast; have some Scout skill sessions or merit badge sessions throughout the morning; have lunch; free time in the afternoon or do some repairs around camp; have dinner; attend the closing flag ceremony; and the evenings are for campfires and troop activities.

The last time we were at Camp Whitsett we learned to make a dutch oven cake one night, and on another night, we hiked out to a field (with at least 10 other troops) to spend the night in our sleeping bags under the stars after the best barbecue meal.

I encourage you to ask the leaders about your concerns about camp, and especially ask the boys who have attended about their experiences at camp.

Everyone (leaders and boys) must have both a "Class 1" and "Class 2" for summer camp. See below for more info.

MEDICAL FORMS — Class 1s are good for one year, and you can sign the bottom and date it for another year if there is an existing one. Class 2s (physical exams) are good for 3 years for boys, 3 years for adults under 40 years old and 1 year for adults 40+. The new medical forms are in effect January, 2010. (Western LA Council will accept the old or new forms for summer camp.) The new forms must be completed in full EVERY year by everybody. There will no longer be a 3-year period that they're good for.

BOARD OF REVIEWS
Scouts MUST request and schedule their BORs with Advancement Chair, Annie Alwin.

YOUTH PROTECTION The BSA places the greatest importance on creating the most secure environment possible for our youth members. All Boy Scout adult volunteers should take this course. It covers the BSA's Youth Protection policies, kinds of abuse, signs of abuse, how to respond to disclosure of abuse, and proper reporting procedures. It does so by taking you through situations that require choices and produce consequences. Successful completion of this course requires an 80 percent or higher score. If you take this test as a registered member of the BSA and designate your local council, your completion will be reported back to your council to adjust your training records. You'll also be offered a certificate of completion. BSA Youth Protection Training On-Line
