Western Hummingbirds in Mississippi
Winter 2000 / 2001

NOTE:

I am surprised by the overall lack of interest with which most Mississippi birders appear to have received this project.  With a few notable exceptions, Vic Duvic for one, this project has received virtually no support the last half of the season.  Perhaps a major factor is the lack of a good communication network between me and the key hummingbird hosts in this state.  Perhaps future attempts at this project will focus on developing a better reporting network among the non-internet folks.  It's clear we can not solely rely on the online community at this point.  If anyone wants to coordinate the Mississippi portion of this project next year, it's available...

I KNOW there are other hummer sightings in Mississippi this winter, but I have no details to support that. Until folks send that information to me, Mississippi's maps will never be as informative as Louisiana's.  I can not continue to pursue phantom reports on my own.  I rely on you to send me details.  Maybe in the future the interest and support will exist to see a project like this succeed.

We tried...

Mississippi Hummer Distribution Maps (use your browser's "Back" button to return to this page)
(Original state maps © 1995 Ray Sterner; John Hopkins University, Applied Physics Laboratory.  Used by permission.  Hummer occurrence maps produced by Stacy J. Peterson)

SUMMARY of western hummingbirds only.  See detailed list below for Archilochus sp. or "unidentified hummingbird" reports.  When those species are deemed to be non Ruby-throats, they will be added here.

33 YARDS (alphabetical order by host) -- Host, City, County  (# hummers)

46 WESTERN HUMMINGBIRDS (Because of the difficulties of field-identification of immature and/or female Rufous, Allens, and some Broad-tailed Hummingbirds, all of which may occur here, reports of "Rufous" are listed as "Selaspho/Rufous" until determined by banding or other means -- i.e., "typical adult male" -- to be a specific species).  Please let me know if your hummer should be listed differently. Again, Archilochus sp. or "unidentified hummingbird" will be added here when they are concluded to be other than Ruby-throated.

14 COUNTIES (# non Ruby-throated hummers; + indicates Archilochus sp. also present)

DETAILED REPORT (by county)   If your bird has accurately been determined to be a specific species, please let me know and I'll change the "Selaspho/Rufous" designation.  This report includes all species of hummers seen this winter.

Alphabetized by county, then city within that county, then last name within that city...
