MOULSECOOMB SWORD GANG - 'Moulsecoomb Sword Gang'
Moulsecoomb Sword gang are damn confusing I must say. 7 tracks are presented on this debut record of theirs, released by ever promising label ‘the mentalist association‘, and shit on a stick im confused as all hell! Not to say MSG are a bad band, far from it, it’s just this CD sounds so alien, so abnormal, you overlook the great songs on here.
if you take the heavy dirge grind of trencher, minus the zany keyboards and add a bucket load of evil spazzy noise rock you can get a rough idea of what MSG sound like.
Great guitar/bass riffs, compliment the awesome drumming, and the screechy bellows from each band member is the icing on the cake.
Songs like ‘Fencing’ and ‘Peanut Whippy’ are brilliant, in the most obscure way ever. Driving, and melodic, songs like these two showcase the insanity/brilliance of a band such as Moulsecoomb Sword gang, who are actually willing to try things out like this.
The recording is quite poor, and is both a burden, and a blessing. On the negative side, it does lose some emotion from the bands songs, but on the plus side, it adds an evil, scuzzy feeling to it, that makes it that much more scummy!
Terrible, or brilliant? I vote for the latter, in a confused and bemused, ‘I like it because I like it’ type of way..

FINAL COMMENT: Get this if you want a record to play whilst beating the shit out of someone. Funk + grind…. whilst you kill!
INFLUENCED BY: Trencher, ……A more abstract, unpleasant Deerhoof…
