Sunbury Cemetery, Livingston County, Illinois
Sunbury Cemetery is one of some 73
cemeteries in Livingston County, and one of at least three in Sunbury Township, but it can
be identified uniquely in several ways. First is the fact that it *is* in Sunbury
Township, which is two townships north of the county seat in Pontiac Township (see map
of townships). Further, the original deed to the
land is a contract between the people of Sunbury Township and two representatives of the
Gammon family. The Gammon plots are in the easternmost and oldest part of the cemetery. Of
the two other "officially recognized" cemeteries in the township, one is the
Blackstone Cemetery, in Section 7; the other is Hadley Cemetery, a small cemetery in
Section 33. Sunbury Cemetery itself is in Section 21 and is just off Route 170, formerly
known as Katydid Road. Clicking here
will bring up a map to that location. The photograph below shows how the cemetery slopes
upward toward the west from Katydid Road.
