S

sa'angreal:

similar to angreal (see above), but much more powerful. In general, a sa'angreal can be said to allow one to channel as much more of the One Power over that of the angreal as the angreal does over channeling unaided.

saidar:

the female half of both the True Source and the One Power

saidin:

the male half of both the True Source and the One Power, tainted by the Dark One before the Breaking of the World

segade:

  • The sedage is a type of flower that grows in the Aiel Waste (and other areas) that a woman may use in makeing her marriage wreath. A wreath made of segade means that the woman has a prickly nature and intends to keep it even after the marriage.
  • sei(a): eyes

  • The most likely singular form is seis.
  • Examples:
  • sei'mosiev: eyes lowered, eyes downcast
  • sei'taer: eyes straight, eyes level
  • seia doon: black eyes
  • sei'cair: golden eyes
  • sei'cair: golden eyes

  • sei'mosiev: lowered eyes, downcast eyes

among the Seanchan, to say that one has "become sei'mosiev" means that one has "lost face."

    sei'taer: straight eyes, level eyes

among the Seanchan, it refers to honor or face, to the ability to meet someone's eyes; to have sei'taer is to have honor

a woman in charge of all palace servants

    shen: band, [group of people]

  • Examples
  • Shen al Calhar: Band of the Red Hand

  • shoufa:

a scarflike garment, usually the color of sand or rock, that is wrapped around the head and neck, leaving only the face bare. When preparing to kill, the Aiel pull the shoufa over the nose and mouth as well, veiling the face according to tradition (TWoRJtWoT, 187)

    siswai: dragon

  • Examples
  • algai'd'siswai: fighters of the dragon
  • siswai'aman: the dragon's spears(?)
  • siswai'aman: the dragon's spears(?), spears of the dragon

the name taken by a good many men among the Aiel, but no women
  • Although the text states that the definition for siswai'aman is "spears of the dragon," I believe that it is not. First of all, the glossary and text define dareis as "spear" (as in Far Dareis Mai and Cor Darei). Perhaps aman is another word for "spear," but it could also be a word for "sword," or maybe another weapon altogether.
  • Joshua M.: Spears of the Dragon (perhaps "Spears Owned by the Dragon")
  • soe’feia: truth speaker, or speaker of truths

so'jhin: a height among lowness, both sky and valley

the term applied by the Seanchan to hereditary upper servants. They are da'covale, yet occupy positions of considerable authority and often power.
