Genealogy

Most of this information is kept at the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador. The United Church of England and Ireland records from 1841 to 1860 are kept at the Anglican Church Rectory in Burin. Because of time constraints and some barely legible information I transcribed as best I could. To validate any information written here please visit the sources cited above. If anyone has information they would like to add to or dispute the information listed here please e-mail the address listed below. Oderin & a few Burin marriage records have been included as well.

Methodist (United Church) Marriage Records for Flat Islands and surrounding areas with a possible connection to families of Flat Islands (1817-1896) Note: A Methodist church was built on Flat Islands in 1873. Flat Islands Parish records date from 1873 onward, with the Flat Islands Parish also encompassing Morteir Bay and Sound Island. Before this time Flat Islands marriages were recorded in the district church of Burin, and residents were married in Flat Islands or a church in a surrounding community, most commonly Burin.

United Church of England and Ireland (Anglican) Marriage Records for Flat Islands and surrounding areas (1841-1896) Note: The First Missionary in the Burin District arrived in 1815, but the earliest records found in Newfoundland are at the Rectory in Burin dating from 1841. Flat Islands fell under the District of Harbour Buffett, but because of the closer proximity of the Church of Holy Trinity at Burin, to my knowledge couples decided to marry there. The Anglican Church at Harbour Buffett was destroyed by fire. Baptismal records of the Flat Islands congregation were possibly destroyed in this fire.

Roman Catholic Marriages solemnized in the district of Burin. I’m not sure if these people were residents of Flat Islands (there wasn’t a place of abode listed on the marriage registers at the Provincial Archives), but because of similar surnames I’ve included them. If anyone has information to add please e-mail me.
