| Please be advised that this timeline is subject to changes due to updates as new information is given as well as corrections over time. Most dates here are my best guess based on information gleaned from the show.
Adrian was born in 1959- I read somewhere on a fan site that he was apparently born in '59, plus in ‘Manhattan’, which took place in March 2004, Sharona said he was 45 years old. Unless he was born in January, February or the first part of March, it means he was born in '59, I think I have that right. Tony was born in 1953. Trudy was born in 1962 and died in 1997, as was written on her tombstone. Adrian said in ‘Dale The Whale’ that she was 34 years old. She was born on Oct. 10th (or possibly Jan. 10th). In ‘Mr. And Mrs. Monk’, Adrian was in Dr. Kroger’s office, the clock said Tue 11. In 2005, the 11th fell on Tuesday only in January and October. Adrian said the day before was Trudy’s birthday. Considering the fact that ‘Mr. Monk Goes Home Again’ had just been shown a few weeks earlier and the episodes were shuffled around so much in the airdates, I tend to think that it was supposed to be Oct. 10th. Also, there is a calendar on the wall by Janice Ellinghouse's desk from Trans Cal Storage, and the month showing is July, 2005. The days matched the days of the week and the month ended in y and it was a short name (May or July) January 2005 had already passed, so this did not take place in January. The next time the 10th of the month falls on a Monday is in April of 2006. Adrian puts on his coat to go to the graveyard indicating it’s a cooler time of year, so I think April would be too warm. Plus all of the other episodes in the first half of the fourth season seem to take place in the fall of 2005. See also entry for Trudy’s murder in ’97. '67- Adrian's dad goes out for Chinese food and doesn't come back. Mentioned in ‘Three Pies’. 1971-72- Sharona was born probably in '71 or '72. In Playboy, she said that Benjy was one year old when she took those pictures and Dexter Larson said she was about nineteen or twenty. She told Adrian this when he first tells her that Dexter had some pictures. Bitty Schram was born in 1968. 1972- Ambrose started to collect all newspapers and mail, and probably when he stopped going outside. Adrian was 13 at this time, and in the eighth grade, with a crush on Sherry Judd. Adrian says more than once that it's been 32 years since he left the house, and it took place in probably fall of 2004. Acorns fall from trees in the fall, the grass was still green, Benjy had his birthday several episodes before in mid August, so probably September to possibly November is when ‘Three Pies’ takes place. ‘Paperboy’ was shown immediately before Three Pies, but was actually filmed immediately after Three Pies. In Paper Boy, when Adrian is showing the captain the article about the hit and run in the paper, the whole date can’t be read, but the part that can be seen says ‘-mber 4, 2004’ 1972- Randy Disher was born (probably some time in the fall, he was celebrating his birthday in Wedding). In ‘Paperboy’, his personal ad said 'Man with badge in hot pursuit of romance. I'm 32, fit, sexy, ambitious with a dynamite sense of humor. Box #307298' This episode was the one to show right before ‘Three Pies’. 1973- He watched Tonday run in LA. ‘Marathon Man’ 1974- May 2 Adrian was supposed to run in all state track meet, but his shoelaces were uneven so he didn't run the race. It was the first time something like that happened in public. ‘Marathon Man’. 1977- Trudy graduated from high school. The mural on the wall in Mr. Monk Goes Back to School said it was done by the class of '77, and Adrian said that Trudy painted some flowers in it. I’m guessing this means she graduated at 15 years old as the valedictorian. ‘Goes Back To School’. Also, in the Monkophile Trivia game on the USA site, one of the questions asked was what year did Trudy graduate high school, and the correct answer was 1977. August 12, 1980, Adrian and Trudy met. In ‘Asylum’, he said August 12 was the anniversary of the day they met. In Class Reunion, Adrian told Natalie that it was on a Tuesday, in the library of Berkeley. Tuesday fell on August 12 in 1980, which would have been Adrian’s senior year of college. However Adrian told Scott Gregorio in Ballgame, “When Trudy fell in love with me, I was a detective, on the street, breaking cases…” but in the end of this episode, they show a flashback of Adrian and Trudy sitting on a bench, and Adrian told Trudy he loved her and she replied, “Then we’re in trouble, because I love you too.” So she was in love with him in college. Also in 1980, Captain Stottlemeyer was already a cop, and was on the campus breaking up a no nukes protest. There are pictures of him in riot gear shown at Adrian’s class reunion. He said the permit expired at noon, then a picture is shown with the clock tower in the background that said it was 12:05. 1986- Adrian (age 27) gets on a plane with his mother, but is crying so much that they have to ask them to get off again before they even leave the ground. ‘Airplane’ 1990 Trudy and Adrian get married apparently some time in the fall or late summer. In ‘Mr. Monk Gets Drunk’ Adrian goes back to the inn and vineyard where he and Trudy honeymooned for their anniversary. They are holding a wine tasting and making the red wine that was Trudy’s favorite during this episode, and red grapes are harvested for wine making usually from the middle to the end of September. Considering that the grape stomping process takes longer than the machine process, they may have started making it earlier than the other red wines. It’s possible that this episode took place anywhere from mid-September to early October, but I tend to think it was in late September. All of the other episodes for the first half of the fourth season appear to have taken place in the fall of 2005. '90 is also the year that Dale loses his mother, goes to bed and balloons from 422 to 927 pounds over the next eleven years. ‘Dale The Whale’ August 14, 1991- Benjy is born. August 14 is the date Trevor said it was when he showed up for Benjy's birthday party in ‘Sleeping Suspect’. ’92 Trudy was working at a paper, I think it was the San Francisco Times, from what I can see of the front page in ‘Mr. And Mrs. Monk’. Adrian pointed out a desk and said it was hers for five years, and he pointed out a mark that he said he did, leaning over to kiss her and he spilled some coffee. He told Natalie he spilled something again seven years later, on Jan. 12, 1999 during an earthquake. ’99 minus seven years means she worked there in ’92, and she was killed in ’97, so she could possibly have worked there till her death, but, In ‘Billionaire Mugger’, Adrian said she was a columnist for the Examiner. Dictionary.com defines a columnist as A writer of a column in a publication, such as a newspaper or journalist who writes editorials [syn: editorialist]. And editorial is an article that expresses the opinions of the editor of a paper. One of the articles Adrian has about Trudy’s murder said she was a journalist. That definition is a writer for newspapers and magazines and seems to indicate someone who works freelance which might explain why she had an office just before she died. Or possibly it’s a writing error. '93 Trudy writes the article about Dale, he sues them even though he knew he couldn't win, and drew it out for a year so that they had to sell every thing they had, including their home, which he bought, I assume out of spite. I wonder why he didn't just buy the paper to keep his name out like Leland said he was known to do, it seemed he formed some odd fixation with Adrian and Trudy and seemed bent on destroying them. But he told Sharona that he sued them nine years before that episode took place, which seems to have been in spring of 2002. 1994 - Adrian and Ambrose lose their mother. Mentioned in ‘Three Pies’ Trudy wrote an article about Winston Brenner, Adrian remembered an exact phrase that the guy used in a letter he wrote because Trudy had written a story about him. Mentioned in ‘Blackout’. 1995 Winston Brenner was supposedly killed, blew himself up before his court date following him bombing a recruiting station in Boston where two soldiers were killed. '95 was the last time Dale and Adrian had contact before ‘Dale The Whale’- Dale asked him how long it's been, and Adrian says it's been 7 years, but it isn't stated what this meeting was about. The lawsuit was presumably over the year before that. '95 Trudy and Janice Ellinghouse wrote a story together on the dockworker's union that caused Jack Bollinger to become union president after he was their source and the former president (Ed Lemley) went to prison where he was still in Oct. 2005. Mr. and Mrs. Monk As of June 21, 1997, Randy was still a sergeant working in Philadelphia PA, a few days after Darlene Coolidge married, then killed one of her husbands. Randy was the lead investigator in the case. The newspaper article that the captain brings from the photographer’s business is dated June 21, 1997. More than once, references have been made to that event being six years prior to that, meaning Wedding happened probably after June of 2003. I think there is another error in here. Wedding first aired on August 19, 2005. Six years before, would have been 1999 when Randy would have been working in San Francisco. If Wedding was supposed to be taking place in 2003, then there is the problem of Natalie not coming to work for Adrian until 2005. ’97 November 11, at 9AM Trudy is killed by the car bomb. (Billionaire Mugger, this date can be seen on a forensics report that Adrian is looking at). There are inconsistencies here- in ‘The Candidate’ one of the articles said Trudy was 35 when she died. In ‘Dale The Whale’, Adrian told Dr. Kroger that she only had 34 years, that Dale stole one of them. With her birth date being Oct 10, 1962, and her death being Nov. 11, 1997, she would have been 35 years old. The inconsistencies are not limited to her age, but also to how long she has been dead. In Cobra, Natalie asks and Adrian confirms that she has been dead nine years, which would mean she died in 1995. However, her headstone says 1962-1997, so I’m goin’ with that. 1998 – Captain Stottlemyer has to take Adrian's badge. In ‘The Candidate’, he said 'When I took you badge three years ago..." and a little while later, Sharona tells Miranda St. Clair that Trudy was murdered four years ago. I am guessing that he must have tried to work for the police department for a while after her murder but it became apparent that he wasn’t well enough. Also in 1998, Sharona started taking care of Adrian. In Asylum, which took place in August 2002, she told Oliver that she had been taking care of Adrian for four years, and Randy told Gail in Earthquake that he had known Sharona for about four years. 2001- December, possibly late November- ‘Candidate’. 2002, July around the middle to 20th of July –‘The Psychic’, he is reading dates of what looks like milk in the fridge, and throws one to Sharona that says sell by July 20th, and another best if used by July 22 Spring 2002- ‘Dale the Whale’- This was the second to be filmed and expected to be 1X03, but was shuffled for some reason to 1X04 July 28th, 2002 -‘Marathon Man’- it's apparently another case of the episodes airing out of sequence like Dale the Whale since this episode aired after the episodes Asylum and Vacation. I looked up the Chronicle Marathon San Francisco in 2002 and got an approximate date of July 28. Also the date on the phone bill on the table is July 16, 2002, and I am guessing that it was at least a week old. August 2002- ‘Asylum’, the angry woman in art therapy said that it was August, and Adrian had gone to Trudy's old house to celebrate the anniversary of the day they met, which was August 12. This took place over August 12 to about the 15th or 16th. August 26, 2002 -‘Mr. Monk Takes A Vacation’ however was supposed to take place at the same time as the Hong Kong holiday called Liberation Day, which is the last Monday in August. After October 4th 2002 (?)- ‘Monk and The Other Woman’- the notary was supposed to have notarized the will Oct. 4th, but this person was out of town at the time. ‘Red Headed Stranger’- I haven't gotten any good idea yet about the time frame here except that shcool has started but it is still warm enough for a guy to feel confident in running buck naked down the streets in front of cameras. A lot of guys wouldn't do that if they had to worry about 'shrinkage'. Guessing late August or September. 2003 ‘Goes Back To School’- presumably late Oct. my best guess, but SATs first test date is in late Oct, I believe. Anyone else who has a more definite date, please feel free to give it to me. Spring 2003 ‘Mexico’- Well it's spring break. Apparently nothing at all interesting happened in San Francisco in the winter of 2003. (amended because I believe the episodes from the second half of the first season possibly happened in 2003 instead of 2002) May to July possibly 2003- Ballgame- Little League baseball usually begins and ends about then. At least in Mississippi. August 13(?) 2003 to a few days after Benjy's birthday. Sleeping Suspect 2003 fall Three Pies late 2003, possibly early 2004- Jail March 2004 Manhattan- There are dates flashing by behind the captain and Adrian in Time Square, and an advertisement about Janet Jackson being on the Today Show I believe on March 21. I would assume this has to do with the Super Bra- I mean Bowl, incident. May 2, 2004- Roddy Lankman cut his assistant’s brakeline. Apparently May 2004 was a never ending month, a time warp of some kind. May 2004- Medicine- Sharona tells Adrian Mardi Gras isn't for another eight or nine months. May 2, 2005 Daniel Thorn's wife was murdered on May 2.* September 16, 2005- Dentist. Seems odd that this episode, which was shown second to last in season four was supposed to have happened before Goes Home, which was the second episode of Season four, but this article http://www.epic-usa.org/Default.aspx?tabid=1814 dated September 16, 2005 was also in the newspaper directly about the report about the armored car hi-jacking that Randy read to help him figure out the case. Oct. 31 2005 Mr. Monk Goes Home Again takes place. Ambrose gets a call from their dad telling him he will be stopping by for a visit at 8PM. After some confusion about a poisoned candy bar, they come back to the house and find that he came by while they were gone and they missed him. *Also, May 2 seems to come up a lot; the track meet when Adrian didn’t run in High School, Roddy Lankman cut Lizzy Talbot’s brake lines and Sheryl Thorn was murdered all on May 2. The track meet was exactly twenty years before Talbot and Sheryl Thorn were murdered. In case anyone was in any doubt, I suck as a web designer, this is not news to me. But I kick ass at research.
