Who You'd be today
What happens when "Normal" becomes an abstract concept?
My pregnacy was normal. My labor and delivery was normal. The existance of normalcy in no way guarantees a normal existance. I ate as best I could, I exercised for as long as I could, I don't smoke, I don't do drugs, I rested, I only had two glasses of wine in the whole nine months - yet somehow, somewhere, something went wrong.

Connor Trey Sands Irwin was born at 4:20pm on June 14th, 2004, he was 6lbs 6oz and 18 1/2 long. He was layed on my tummy after he was born, then cleaned up and wrapped for his father to hold. He was crying but they didn't feel he was crying as vigorously as he should. My other two sons slept shortly after they were born so I wasn't concerned. His one minute APGAR was 7, his 5 minute was up to 9. *an APGAR rates the color, breathing and general wellbeing of a newborn, 10 being the best* So I wasn't concerned. He was taken to the transition nursery just to be watched, his father was going to go up with him to watch them do the footprints and everything else. So I wasn't...something started not to feel right. There is a moment, and most mothers and many fathers can attest to this, when you get a "feeling". You can't put your finger on it, but you just know.Within less then an hour Connor was having a seizure and wasn't breathing. What went wrong?
This was the next time I saw Connor.

our hours after he was born
Over the next three weeks Connor's doctors ran test to pin point what was causing the seizures. In the meantime he was heavily medicated to control them. His phenobarbital level was around 47 *phenobarbital in an anti-seizure drug and the theriputic ranges are 15 to 40* Being over 40 and because this was a drug new to his system, Connor was basically in a medicine induced coma - for lack of a better term - for almost two weeks.
