by Derek Walcott, the
first New York exhibition by this acclaimed poet, playwright, and Nobel
Laureate, will be shown at the June Kelly Gallery beginning November 18.
The works will remain on view through December 30.
Walcott, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992, brings a poets eye and imagination to his paintings. His works are lush scenes that celebrate a part of the world that he knows best, the Cari bbean, with its natural beauty, fishermen, the markets and mountains and, always, the sea. The result is art of a comforting commonplace, suffused with a delicate play of light, color and shadow. As his readers know, Walcott paints pictures with words. For example, in his Noble Prize lecture, he spoke of a heat-stoned afternoon search infon Port of Spain some alley white with glare, with love vine spilling over a fence, palms and a hazed mountain . In The Prodigal, he describes a gray sky that trawls its silver wires of rant; these are the subtleties of the noon sea: lime, emerald, lilac, cobalt, ultramarine. How does Walcott translate his words to paintings? He once wrote: I approach every canvas with a pompous piety, faithful to the lines of the drawing, a devotion transferred from a different servitude, to lines of poetry proceeding by a systematic scansion, brushstroke and word. Walcott attended St. Marys College in St. Lucia and is a graduate of the Faculty of Arts of the University of the West Indies in Jamaica. He also studied theater at the Jose Quinteros actinmy rape diary part 8 my rape diary the final part my rape fantasy hard rape gang rape my rape rape porn sexual torture anal rape free rape rape erotic stories rape women rape sex porng school in New York. He is also an Honorary Member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. |
