| March 4th: Book review: 24 The Official Companion Season Following the guide to season five that came out last year comes the official book to accompany season six. What’s interesting about this book and the question of whether or not you should buy it is that Season six is widely viewed as the show’s weakest. If you a fan of 24 (and let’s face it you wouldn’t consider buying the book if you weren’t anyway) then you have as much reason to pick up a copy as you would for a guide on any season. The book’s opening section ‘Creating Season 6’ deals directly with a lot of the criticism that the year received, and sums up the year pretty much the same way as I have in the past: “…I thought it was a perfectly solid season on the level of season three. It’s not the best, and maybe the worst, but certainly not bad. […] I always feel that the worst of 24 is better then anything else on television.” There’s a quote from the book said by executive producer Manny Coto. There was definitely many things that didn’t sit well with fans throughout the season, but there are those in any season. It just so happened that there were a few more this year then those previous, or maybe it was a combination of that with there being a lack of things fans thought was very good which itself may be a problem the show had due to repetitiveness and lack of originality. Negative opinions on season six aside you have this book which as has come to be expected with all books on 24; is a clear, well presented, entertaining and fascinating behind the scenes look at everyone’s favourite show (To anyone who thought Lost to themselves just then…naughty!) It’s filled with insider knowledge of how and why they did certain things throughout the year. It also includes the story on the original ideas they had for the closing moments of the finale which would eventually lead to the return of Tony at the beginning of Season seven. (although at time of writing it’s still a long way off due to the breeding writers strike!..Not that I didn’t support it. All power to them, just don’t ever mess with 24 again ya hear!) It was interesting that they considered bringing back Christopher Henderson prior to the Tony idea. Doubt he’ll ever come back now that they’re already pushing things with Tony, but who knows. Maybe Terri Bauer could return and shock the world! It does give an indication of things that could have been as they talk on plans for Kiefer’s father Donald Sutherland to play Jack’s dad, but it wasn’t to be. Whilst going hour by hour through the season there’s the guide also features research files which are filled with info of real life things featured in the series such as suitcase nukes and the Geiger counter. These are interesting for trivia buffs, but at the same time you probably won’t really care to read them. One thing that is interesting is that the book lists Wayne Palmer as being married, but throughout the series and his two comas in season six you don’t hear a peep about his wife. Intriguing… What’s even more interesting however is that with the book comes a bonus DVD with features on the making of the show. This is cool and if you like the kind of extras you get on the season boxsets, you’ll like this. |
| May 20th: It's been a while since an update, but I guess that's the way things go when there's no 24 on our screens. The new season may not be until next year, but towards the end of this year we will get the two hour season seven prequel! Still too far away? Well out soon is the Special edition season one set (with all the extras that have been on 24 DVD's since season two) and we'll have a review right here soon. To keep you busy in the mean time here's a clip of an alternate ending from season one!!!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qbs9EFYTGWE |
| June 2nd: 24 Season one special edition Review
So finally six years after season one was first released on DVD 24, season one gets the release it should have originally. The big question on everyone’s lips is whether you should buy it or not? The answer really depends on how big a fan you are of 24. You see as good as this edition is, I still felt it could have had a tad more. That said that could just be me never satisfied always wanting more 24. Especially in the wait we’ve had this year with no season seven! The extras you get this time round certainly are better then those found on season ones original release. Before now copies of season one with an alternate ending and a message about season two from Kiefer Sutherland. That’s it. Fast forward to now however and you do get a lot more. Not as much as you’d find on other seasons box sets, which may leave you slightly disgruntled. After all they’ve made us wait all these years for the special edition, they could have given us more then two commentaries. Still the commentaries are insightful and perhaps better for the fact that they came so long after the episodes first aired. Where as new seasons get their releases right on the tails of the final episodes airing what we have here are commentaries in true retrospect of the show episodes that started it all. Episodes one and twenty-four specifically. Beyond the commentaries there’s a brand new documentary: The Genesis of 24. Interviewing key cast and crew this reveals how the show came into being. From its initial concept to how Nina Myers ended up wearing her own clothes for the whole season, and more. Web episode of ‘The Rookie’ are also included which provide a fun distraction from the long hours of season one. The bonus features are all on a bonus disk seven which is a step up from the six disc original release. This whole package is wrapped in a metal case with the numbers ‘24’ embossed on the cover. It’s a very cool case with a little LCD digital display which when activated will keep ticking for 24 hours. Nice. The first season is in this writers opinion the best in story terms, and if you are yet to experience the show, this is essential viewing! If you’ve a seasoned veteran of the show you will need to consider this purchase as the extras could have been slightly more. None the less this is a better release of the first season then previously available so if your copy it scratched from over use don’t hesitate to get this version instead. |
| September 22nd 2008: It’s been a long long time between updates, but never fear this site is still here, with zero intention of going anywhere ever. This has been a long year with no new season, but the wait for 24 won't be too long now as 24: Redemption (which was previously known as 24: Exile) will be hitting screens in exactly two months and one day on 23rd November. This should hopefully help us all keep the faith in Jack, Chloe, Tony and company until the long delayed Season 7 starts in January. In the mean time check out the trailer for Redemption below. |
| November 25nd 2008: It’s now time for the clock to start ticking down to season 7 in January!..But first there's the little matter of 24 Redemption which premiered on Sky One in the UK last night. It's been a long time since we saw Jack and company, and it turns out that since we last saw him he's been avoiding the US government by dodging around the world. This has landed him in Africa staying with his old friend Carl (played by Robert Carlyle) who runs a school for orphan children. Meanwhile back in the US new US President elect Alison Taylor is about to take over from Noah Daniels (Wayne Palmer's successor from season six). Jack's day start's to go wrong when representative's from the US find Jack and inform him that he has to return to the US. Naturally this doesn't sit well with Jack, but this is only the beginning of his trouble as things start to become very remenisant of the movie Blood Diamond. Tony Todd returns to 24 for the first time since season 3, but as a different character. Now he portrays General Juma, a dictator who gets his men to kidnapp young boys as new members of his army. Jack who was about to hit the road (Jack...get it) suddenly finds himself protecting Carl's students and taking down many bad guys in the process. Jack hasn't lost his killing ability at all. Unfortunately Carl wasn't destined to make it, although his death isn't seen on screen so who knows he may Almeida his way back to life yet. With Carl dead Jack has no choice but to hand himself over to the US government to ensure the kids from the orphanedge find refuge in the US. This very nicely sets up the beginning of season 7, but the real question is how good was 24 Redemption in it's own right? Yes it was good, but there was definitely the feeling that the writers were purposely holding back. The story didn't have an exciting ending which a standalone story should have, and although this may have been done to leave things open for the next season it also lacked an exciting cliffhanger which would have got the audience more excited for the next installment. There's also the possibility that the writers/producers didn't want to have the most exciting 2 hour special of 24 on free tv when they still hope to get everyone paying to see 24 the movie in a couple of years time...hmmm. Anyway this was still satifactory enough for us all who have been missing Jack for the last 18 months. But one final question. Why no Chloe? |
