background: Wyland’s idea for painting whales on the sides of buildings developed quite naturally from the difficulty he was having in portraying the mammoth creatures on small canvasses. In 1978, his desire to paint whales lifesize led him up and down the Pacific Coast Highway from San Diego to San Francisco until he finally found the “perfect wall” in Laguna Beach.
Laguna's long history as an internationally known art colony, its coastal location and the fact that the grey whales migrate along its shoreline each year made it the best choice for Wyland's first lifesize mural.

Leonardo Da Vinci: the Parabolic Bridge. The graceful bridge was designed to span the Golden Horn, as part of a civil engineering project for Sultan Bajazet II of Constantinople, but never built. Now Vebjørn Sand of Norway has completed the project and brought this inspired design by Leonardo into the sphere of historical engineering milestones.
Conceptually, Vebjørn Sand sees the project as a vivid meeting between the functional and esthetical worlds. It is a reminder that the technology the human race has come to consider a necessary part of daily life, was possible only by the deep faith the great geniuses of Western art and science had in the spiritual reality of the natural world.
The swivel bridge was designed by Leonardo to span long areas whenever the different ends of the bridge were at different levels.
