| I was recently given the honor of being published on StarWars.com in a Official Hyperspace Fan Club contest known as "What's the Story", however my entire entry was not used. The actual entry, seen here, was an amalgam of my ideas and another StarWars.com (also moderator on TheForce.Net Literature forums) member known as "The2ndQuest". The2ndQuest actually provided a majority of the backstory, while I only provided bits and pieces. It should also be known that we did not knowingly collaborate. The judges at StarWars.com merged our entries, as they said they may do under the terms of the contest. So I decided to publish here my original entry, which was quite different from the "Unstable Terrain Artillery Transport" version that was published. My version, the "All Terrain Combat Sled" is somewhat similar, though perhaps not nearly as creative as what was finally arrived at. But, it will give you an idea of what bits and pieces they used on the actual site. The rest of the entry, I can only assume, whas the other participant's... _________________________________ My (Partial) Winning "What's the Story" Entry: The All-Terrain Combat Sled (AT-CS) is designed for worlds with a combination of tundra and hard-pack ice. Its unique propulsion system allows it to "walk" on an undulating set of 16 skid plates, designed to distribute the weight of the vehicle to give it maximum traction and stability on ice. Each pad can be angled individually or as a set. When laid with the large surface area flush with the ground, each skid acts as an individual "snowshoe" that allows it to propel the craft like a centipede to speeds up to 30 kph. When angled, each skid contacts icy surfaces with a narrower edge, creating greater pressure per square inch, thus increasing traction for stability while firing. For emergency evasion, the skids can be locked in "flush" configuration, and a set of repulsorlifts at the front can provide short bursts to catapult the craft forward or backwards at speeds up to 100 kph. The drawback of this straight-line mobility is lack of control, and it robs the weaponry of power. (cont'd) ----> |

(cont'd) ____________________________________ The AT-CS shares design elements with its larger forebear, the AT-TE, with the same cockpit and EMP shielding. The armor is also insulated against cold. Like the AT-TE, the sled has top-mounted projectile cannon and two larger vertically swiveling cannon on either side. The drive section of the combat sled is likewise protected by 4 smaller laser turrets. The AT-CS is 23.8 meters long, 9.5 meters tall, and 10.9 meters wide. It carries 12 troops, with pilot and gunner. Its wedged front plating serves as a plow through drifts. Although the AT-CS proves more effective than its armored cousins in icy climates, it suffered heavy losses in the Clone Wars due to its slow speed. Often times the evasion thrusters could not be engaged without endangering surrounding troops. Because of its raised deck, a well-placed hit underneath the vehicle could send it into a summersault. Nonetheless, the AT-CS allowed troopers mobility and firepower in icy terrain that would normally be unreachable. |
