Kelfer (Deferiprone)

Deferiprone is available in India since 1995 and many Thalassemics are taking it regularly either with Desferal or only this. They have shown considerable improvent. Some Thalassemics have started taking desferal at the age of 12 to 15  years with the Serum Feretin level in five figures. With the the combination of both medicines their Serum Feretin level now is between 1000-3000.

For the  Thalassemics taking Deferiprone, CBC test is done every 7 to 15 days. Some Thalassemics have stopped the medicine because of low blood counts, knee pain or other problems but most of the Thalassemics are getting benifit of the medicine. About 30 Thalassemics in Jaipur are taking Kelfer, varying from 3 to10 capsules per day.
