In Memory Of Tatiana On December 25, 2007, Tatiana, a beautiful Siberian tiger jumped over the wall of her enclosure at the San Francisco Zoo and attacked three men, killing one of them and severely injuring the other two. According to witnesses who have come forward and furnished information about the incident, the three men were taunting the tiger who escaped from her enclosure before being gunned down by San Francisco Police Officers. A more complete account of the tragic incident can be read here. The San Francisco Police Department launched a criminal investigation into the tiger attack hoping to shed some light onto the events that took the life of a young man and led to the demise of a beautiful four year old tiger. No matter what the outcome of the investigation will be, this fatal incident has raised many questions: should wild animals be jailed in zoos? Who benefits from it? Are we housing these animals in captivity just to entertain humans? Are zoos ethical? |
