T'aichi Ch'uan (Great Polarity Boxing) generally referred to simply as T'aichi or Taiji is a Chinese discipline for health and self-cultivation that is practiced the world over by people from all walks of life looking to enhance and maintain good health and wellbeing.

T'aichi Ch'uan with it's emphasize on relaxation, skeletal alignment, correct body postures, slow and even movements, and deep breathing has been known to significantly reduce stress and improve ones overall health, in fact, current research suggests that:

The practice of T'aichi Ch'uan can improve balance, reduce falls and increase leg strength. It may also lower blood pressure, stress hormones, enhances respiratory and immune function, and promotes physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellness.

John Hartley founded the Clearwater School of T'aichi Ch'uan to explore, teach and develop T'aichi Ch'uan as a means for attaining good  health and as a practice for self-cultivation through  adherence to T'aichi principles and philosophy.

John began his formal practice of T'aichi Ch'uan during the later seventies in Sydney, NSW Australia, where he was to learn Yang style routines. As a part of that curriculum John initially learnt the Yang Style Short Form 37postures.

The 37posture form was originally fashioned and made popular by the renowned Professor Cheng Man-Ch'ing (1901-1975). Due to the foundations laid by Professor Cheng Man-Ch'ing the Yang style short form 37posture T'aichi - has become one of the most widely practiced forms of T'aichi  throughout the world.

Historically, T'aichi Ch'uan was reportedly created by Taoist monk Chang San-Feng during the Sung dynasty (1279-1368). Chang San-Feng expounded the theories of action and non-action of the Yellow Emporer and Lao-Tzu and combined them with the concepts of Li, Ch'i and Hsiang from the Chou book of changes.
